The Remnants Of An Army, Jellalabad, January 13, 1842
Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler

That's William Brydon, the only survivor of the British Army's retreat from Kabul in 1842. 14,000 men were either killed or captured.

The first Flashman novel has our anti-hero as part of the Brits fleeing Afganistan in 1842 after a negotiated agreement for peaceful withdrawal. As a column of 4500 soldiers and 12,000 civilians, including women and children, marched out, the Afghans killed them all except for a literal handful. One Brit and a few sepoys. Flashie was disguised as a sepoy.

Afghanistan hasn't changed much since 1842, comparatively.

No, it doesn't. You set yourself up for it when you start that way. I understand that we can all have bad days or several days at work, but what are the positives in it.
1. You're making money which you need.
2 I assume in some way you're serving others who need help in something.3. How can you bless somebody today by what you do?4. You don't like the job but it's where you are now so what do you gain from being negative about it?

I suggest reading "The Power of the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence who was a 17th century French monk (The book is in English though) He was a menial lay brother in a French monastery. He said that we can pick up a straw if we do it for love of God and neighbor. It's a meditative book and he was a nice man, just as are also a nice man.

But with this joke of a president, White House and country, what does it matter?

173 I try to avoid political comments on the gun and art threads. I'll just say this painting is disgustingly appropriate.

Now to the painting, which is exquisitely rendered. Her use of dusty earth tones dominate everything. Nothing is bright it all blends as if the area had consumed the man and his horse, even the fort in the background. The way she shows the rider's posture, reeling from exhaustion and grimly holding on is mirrored in the horse's posture.

The environment has subsumed it all. The trooper has gone half native in his clothes just to survive that far. The bright red of an English soldier is gone. He doesn't even have the will to protest fate.

I don't know how this work would have been regarded by the Victorian audience but it expresses the absolute defeat of Empire. It is so powerful an image and so well done (what talent she had!!) I can imagine viewers standing in front of it in admiration for the artist's ability and horror at the actual scene.

209 hehe, newsweek U.K., French, German Leaders Blast Biden Over Afghanistan: 'We Thought America Was Back'
European Union and U.K. leaders have voiced their criticism of how U.S. President Joe Biden handled America's withdrawal from Afghanistan, a stark difference from the praises they gave at the beginning of his presidency. -"We lived a little bit the great illusion," said French Parliamentarian Nathalie Loiseau. "We thought America was back, while in fact, America withdraws." -"To see their commander-in-chief call into question the courage of men I fought with, to claim that they ran, is shameful," Tugendhat said. -Chris Bryant, from the opposition Labour Party, called Biden's remarks about Afghan soldiers, "some of the most shameful comments ever from an American president." Soeder said Washington should provide funding and shelter to people fleeing Afghanistan, since "the United States of America bear the main responsibility for the current situation."
"The people had a glimpse of a better life -- but that has been torn away."
The we thought America was back statement is a joke. 1, it was back under Trump, and 2, what do they mean by that exactly? We police world?

They didn't trot this out for Clinton because despite all of his wild problems and poor decisions, Clinton was fairly competent. They did trot this out under Bush 43, because they didn't like his policies. The used it again under the JEF because he was inept.

272 I wondered if any of the old Brit paintings would be appearing. The officer who reached safety was a regimental surgeon, who was sent ahead because he could be spared, and the remnants of the regiment wouldn't need his services much longer. (They were killed to a man in a last stand no less dramatic than the Little Bighorn.) The first Flashman novel describes the circumstances of the retreat in harrowing detail, and Flashman's own anti-hero stance spares nothing of the debacle.

That's not enough, I don't think. Intent counts. If you foul up a supply line and accidentally send arms to the enemy, you're grossly incompetent and you're going to be court martialed and imprisoned, but you probably didn't commit treason.

This withdrawal is catastrophically fucked up and everything has been done wrong. If they didn't intend to arm the enemy, then treason is probably a hard case.

No. He was given accolades and honors for doing his duty and surviving the epic run to the fort, which he did without rest, evading pursuit, at the cost of his horse. We have spoken with NATO allies -- the Secretary of State, our National Security Advisor, has been in contact with his counterparts throughout the world and our allies. As has the general -- excuse me, I keep calling him the general, but my Secretary of Defense. The fact of the matter is that I have not seen that. JA could have hit the high spots, gone into detail on a few important points, and told the whole story of JA's adult life and career in 4 episodes tops. I begin to wonder if this mini-series concept is worth all it's ballyhooed as. If Star Trek were to be done today (aside from any woke-ism or SJW concepts), "Balance of Terror" would take 3 hours and "The Menagerie" 6.

444 When Phillip K. Dick wrote "The Man in the High Castle," he intended a sequel. He started it several times, but always gave up and changed the story to something else. There are a number of books and stories that start with a major war on the West Coast, and most of them were intended to be sequels to "The Man in the High Castle."

The reason he failed to finish it is the set up was that Reinhard Heydrich would take over from the Fuhrer when Hitler died (which is reasonable - if he hadn't been killed in Czechoslovakia and if Germany had won the War, it is not an unlikely outcome). The ascension of Heydrich was to be the precipitating event that opened war between Germany and Japan in North America. Dick commented that he every time he tried to get into Heydrich's psyche, it was so terrifying that he had to stop or go insane, and so he changed all those books to other stories.

486 What's really disturbing is a rumor circulating about some secured warehouses that only highest levels of security clearance US military staff had access to. No one seems to know what was in them. Taliban is in full control of those warehouses now. And those warehouses were full of equipment whatever it was.

He's trying to confirm but believes that the Taliban also secured US military drone jamming equipment which is disastrous if true.

CCP has people on the ground right now negotiating on any US technology they see of value. Dealing directly with Taliban based on what he told me tonight.

Here's the options.
1. There was a quick but effective plan to replace OMB's plan put in front of Hiden, because dammit all he's still POTUS. He refused it and said "Just get the military out of there." He's still POTUS....
2. There never was any decision made. The attention to the Taliban offensive was less then the attention paid to Watch On The Rhine. Surprise!!! They've been reacting instead of acting ever since.
3. The PRC called in some markers. Their Manchurian Candidate in the White House followed through. "If it succeeds, none dare to call it treason."
4. The hardcore Obummer anti-West people told Hiden it was for the best if Amerikkkan colonialist imperialist racist etc ambitions were destroyed once and for all. America is good and divided now!

On 20 August 2021, the U.S. Department of State released a fact sheet announcing Russian firearms and ammunition importation will be banned for a minimum of 12 months starting 7 September 2021.

That will teach those naughty Russkis... just like the League of Nations banning the sale of donkeys to Italy after their invasion of Ethiopia.

Century Arms' Red Army Standard ammunition line is mostly made outside of Russia. Ukraine, Bosnia, Poland, Rumania.

If the Ukrainians are smart, they'll start running extra shifts or pulling old stocks of ammo from warehouses to take advantage of the situation.
