Study: Babies Who've Spent Their Entire Young Lives In Lockdown Have Significantly Stunted IQs, on the Level of Actual Cognitive Impairment

Scientists have discovered that the coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted the intelligence of children born during it: Living the entirety of their lives in lockdown has seriously stunted their cognitive development. Researchers analyzed the cognitive performances of 672 children born in Rhode Island, 188 of them born well into the pandemic (after July 2020), 308 born before it (prior to January 2019) and 176 of them born during its beginning stage (between January 2019 and March 2020). They found that children born during the pandemic have pronouncedly lower IQs than those born before it. "It's not subtle by any stretch," lead study author and Brown University associate professor of pediatric research Sean Deoni told the Guardian of the trend. "You don't typically see things like that, outside of major cognitive disorders." Authors attribute the pattern to children being cognitively impaired from spending so much time inside with overwhelmed parents during the past year. While many adults have managed to tough it out, so much isolation at a critical juncture in the mental progress of infants has likely caused lasting damage.Facial recognition is one of the earliest and most important tasks a baby's brain learns to perform. Perhaps seeing a world of masked faces has stunted babies in this critical, first-step task. Let's hope that this finding is not true and just due to experimental error. But it may well be true. And we may well have lowered the IQs of babies to the level of the cognitively-impaired for the sake of Virtue Signaling and Karen Mobbing. It could be error. It could be true. If it is true, it isn't necessarily permanent. Kids are pretty resilient. If it is a real phenomenon, though, it gets harder to recover from the longer it goes on. This shit needs to end, now. It needed to end a long damn time ago, but continuing it just means that fewer and fewer of these kids will recover and have normal intelligence and social skills. Yes, this assumes that the effect is real, but at this point we know that these measures are useless and the side effects are harmful anyway.

I'm not sure about this.
Junior was kept in the house from birth until about 3 when we finally put him in daycare. Dolley worked nights, and we split care of him with me taking care of him in the evening until about midnight and she would take care of him from about noon until I got home from work. He's a bright kid, reading a couple of grade levels above his grade.
Second Junior is in a similar situation except that both Dolley and I are around all the time. Obviously bright, curious, and playful, he seems fine without any note from his doctor that anything could be wrong cognitively.
There might be something else at play, but I don't think the isolation from the outside world would have that much of an influence on IQ.

Seems just a bit sketchy to be making such an incredibly serious charge based on a study of kids who are too young to speak articulately about much, and who can't really take most cognitive-type tests.
Also, do parents really wear masks when they are exclusively home with their new-born for the first year? Doubtful. I do recognize the importance of infant bonding through facial recognition, but this study seems like rank bullshit to me.

The gym requires me to wear a mask while we are in with the kids. My little guy is constantly trying to remove my mask and when he shifts it such that he sees much of my face, he is much, much happier.
Without the mask, he knows it's me. With it, he is not so sure.

Some time ago a commenter here mentioned working as a speech therapist (retired, I believe) and how difficult learning would be during the masking times.
So imagine someone who knows the words and can understand the words, but relies on coaching to say those words properly.
A baby is figuring out the words, the meaning of words and how to say the words. I imagine they naturally think its strange, at first, to hear voices coming from nowhere.

Depends on what you're measuring. When it comes to older people, written exams have a bias against people with too much energy to handle sitting still well. Doesn't mean they're entirely useless. Weight isn't an absolute measure of health but it isn't completely noninformative either.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm not glad that my daughter needs therapy 3-4x a week, but I have been glad for the fact that she has all these 'friends' she's always hanging out with, and socializing, instead of just being hemmed up in the house with the family and no other human contact.

I used to have long hair that I usually kept slicked back and in a pony tail. My brother and his family used to spend the night occasionally with their first child. He was around 2, I think, and in the morning I would wake up and go into the living room with my hair down. He would scream bloody murder because I was a complete stranger. I'd have to go back and put my hair back in the ponytail so he'd recognize me.

It's relatively well understood that IQ in people before actual adulthood tends to demonstrate much more difference in ability than tends to persist long term. Being 1 year ahead is a big deal in elementary school and not so meaningful at 20.
If there's substantial differences in group averages though, that's noteworthy.

When the kiddos were babies, there was a book titled (I think), "The First Three Years of Life" that looked at the first 3 years according to the state of the art science at the time.
As a for instance, when babies first start smiling when they see your face, they're not smiling cuz they see Mom's or Dad's face. They're smiling in response to see eyeholes. If you simply cut a paper circle or square and draw in two eye-sized black dots, the baby will smile just the same as if it saw your face.
I know cuz I tried it out. So, if early enough, a masked face is just as good for the infant as your whole face.

I guess I need to say this again. Delta has an Ro of about 8, about 3x that of the Alpha (ref- CDC). With these leaky vaccines, if we were to have 100% vaccine uptake and perfect mask use we cannot stop the spread of Delta (ref- CDC).
the current vaccines provide about 50-60% efficacy in protection from infection. They are not fully protective.
if you are vaccinated and become infected ("breakthrough"), the virus will replicate at the same or higher levels than if you were unvaccinated and then become infected.
if you are vaccinated and then become infected, your risk of transmitting virus to someone else is quite high - remember, the Ro measures how likely you are to transmit the virus.
if you are vaccinated and then become infected, your risk of developing severe disease or dying is better than if you were not vaccinated and then become infected with Delta.
Therefore, if you are vaccinated and then become infected, you MAY have a higher risk of becoming a "superspreader" because you are less likely to show disease. This has not been measured, but it should be.

We're changing thousands of years of evolution. That whole book is filled with fascinating stuff about how a baby matures and approximately when the various "sensitive periods" and brain switches flip during normal maturation.
Now, the problems (if this report is true) could come in if the infant didn't receive the type of stimulation that his/her brain needs to actually "flip the switch". Then they might never develop that rain or have an impaired version of it.
As a for instance, there's a famous study where they taped ping-pong balls cut in half over kittens eyes during an important sensitive period for vision development. The amount of time is surprisingly;y short. But, if the ping-pong halves are not removed during that short amount of time, the kitten never learns to see. It can distinguish light and dark but cannot see objects. It's functionally blind.
So, perhaps something like that is at play if that report is true.

Exactly. Even normal IQ tests don't measure IQ the way people tend to think of them. But you can very much notice a substantial change in performance in similar cohorts over a short timeframe. Attribution is tricky and whether the effect is permanent is anyone's guess, but when observing a large difference it's relatively easy to determine that it does exist.

Yeah. Because of her prematurity and her long convalescence, surgeries, etc., my daughter is about 4-5 months behind @ 18 mos. This is expected, and she will (hopefully) catch up.
But when she was very new to the world, the key tests were things like grasping, rolling over, etc. The fact that she would grasp my fingers at birth was apparently a very promising thing, as far as the neurosurgeons were concerned.

I have paid return visits to Rich Zeoli, Dan Bongino, Michael Malice, Derek Hunter and Dave Rubin on regular bases, but not continual and exclusive listening to them. I actually enjoy Malice and Rubin quite a bit. Zeoli added an afternoon podcast that I intend to subscribe to soon.

But I would think that a baby's lack of cognitive development would be a function of neglect from it's own parents rather than overall lack of stimulation from say not seeing more faces or going to stores or something.

Yes, but you need some benchmarks and metrics for evaluation and amelioration where possible.
You can probably find it on youtube, there is a video of Russian babies in orphanages who received very little human contact and stimulation and the knock on effects on their development years later.
It's quite eye opening.

We're not talking about an individual baby but the comparison of cohorts. And the difference isn't a small difference. Now the cohorts could be non-representative for some reason and attribution is going to be more like guesswork but the difference between cohorts is likely real.

One thing I like about Tim Dillon's long podcasts is the ads. Sometimes his reads are boring like everyone else's, but they're often raucously funny. Makes the in-line ads much more fun.

I have, unfortunately, a lot of life experience in cognitive issues in a child...none I would wish on anyone here.
Almost all result of chromosomal issues - micro deletions or additions typically on the distal ends - replicated over and over through out your child. Its the dirty secret you are never told but find out many years later. Its sad, because those being the majority of problem of the these learning disabilities, they cannot be resolved - only through therapy and some drug courses can they be at minimum lessened.
Parents never want to hear it - my wife cried for a long long time - she still cries - hell, I cry. But this is what God gave me, and we love our son very much. Its hard to know he will be with me and live with us until we leave this world. But he will always have this home - at least as long as I can give it to him.

Last year, the assholes here mandated the flu shot for the first time ever.
They even had the balls to say, even if you get a note from your doctor, we will make the final determination. WTF?
I told a couple people if that happens, make sure you report the Infection Control RN and the Medical Director (the appointed "reviewers") to their respective state boards for unethical behavior. They have never examined you, don't know your medical history, have never reviewed your medical records, etc.
I can only imagine what they will do/say when they mandate the covid shot here...

I have a cousin who's oldest son was born premature and through everything he is wheelchair bound for life, he cannot speak, I don't even think he is able to eat normally. She and her husband will likely be taking care of him for the rest of their lives. He has just turned 18 recently though, and is loved.

They also make one that has the barrel and stock that separate with a simple catch. Makes cleaning super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Yea, I was on the fence about being vaxxed, but all the hysteria to push the vax has now made me really, really nervous. They've lied about everything else, have they lied about the vax too and they want to jab us before we figure it out?
And I am so glad I am in the position to retire if I have to. I feel horribly sorry for family men in their 30s and 40s who can't just give their employers the middle finger and walk away. It's easy to quit if you don't have any mouths to feed.

This was my plan until I heard Novomax announced delay of their vaccine into the "4th Quarter" of this year. My "employer" (Court system) won't let me back in Court without wearing a scarlet "D" for "Deplorable" and I have in person stuff I need to do their in October.

I guess I need to say this again. Delta has an Ro of about 8, about 3x that of the Alpha (ref- CDC). With these leaky vaccines, if we were to have 100% vaccine uptake and perfect mask use we cannot stop the spread of Delta (ref- CDC).
