Peanut went to the vet today for a chest X-ray and blood draw. There's much less fluid in his chest and she could see his heart for the first time. His blood panel was normal as well.
Peanut's been on Prednisone and Lasix, which seem to have helped. He drinks like a fish and pees like a racehorse but it's a small price to pay.
As to the possibility of cancer, the vet wants his chest in better shape before doing another analysis to nail it down.
His appetite is good and he's clear-eyed. Thank you for your good wishes for our good, luckless boy.

IMO, this is one of those things where the reputation is worse than the reality. It can be a bit of a PITA until the pin loosens up a little and until you get the hang of shaking the strut into the right position but after that it's not so bad. And two or three companies make a kit that replaces the swaged pin with a screw-out pin.

If I wind up having to get one, that's the one I'd likely go for as well--it's least likely to come with extra baggage that they amazingly discover right after everyone who's going to get it gets it.
More generally, I'm not broadly opposed to these vaccines but I am personally not interested in an experimental treatment when it's not clear that it actually works. The grocery stores around here are getting a bit spotty. They tell me it's trucking problems, can't get enough drivers, and also enough local labor to unload the trucks if they get them in.
They aren't running out of stuff, but inventory is getting low. They sometimes run out of milk, especially at night.
One manager said he could get a dairy truck in late, but he didn't have enough help to unload it.
That and trucking itself is getting to be a problem.

Too much corn was planted in arid Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado. Because of stupid Federal incentives to aid Cargill and ADM. Only extensive center pivot irrigation works, and that is getting expensive as the underlying aquifer sinks / is drained away.
20% of what I saw looked OK. Lot of bad corn crops.
All the winter wheat is in, and the harvest was good.
Sorghum universally looking great. As was the early soybean crop.

Little guy is passed out next to me. Doctor came in, without doing any tests just assumes he has it as he was exposed to three other kids who had RSV. Then asked questions about our youngest child as RSV can be pretty serious to babies.
Pretty much a waste of fucking time. No meds prescribed, just a ride it out diagnoses and a q&a about a child that was not present.
Wondering if my wife being adamant about just checking for RSV altered normal practice.

I passed a lot of full feedlots, lots of grazing Angus cattle herds, and several world-class meat packing plants. All along this was a main line of the BNSF railway.
I did not see a single train moving. Only some cattle transporters were on the road. WTF?
The meat packing plants had the usual help wanted signs out. Plenty of Mexican radio stations in Western Kansas around the Dodge City area. And the one Walmart I went in briefly had a mix of normal Americans, Mennonite women, and 20% Mexicans by language and culture.

CVS has it but only in the MinuteClinic mini-clinics in some of their stores. At least they had it at MinuteClinics a week ago. Two weeks ago CVS stopped sending J&J vaccine doses to their plain-old pharmacy stores, only to the MinuteClinics. Good luck in your search.

The grocery stores around here are getting a bit spotty. They tell me it's trucking problems, can't get enough drivers, and also enough local labor to unload the trucks if they get them in.
They aren't running out of stuff, but inventory is getting low. They sometimes run out of milk, especially at night.
One manager said he could get a dairy truck in late, but he didn't have enough help to unload it.
That and trucking itself is getting to be a problem.

He did not say he did not have the authority. He said he didn't have the capacity. Which I guess is a judgment call - UK has 2 Para there and they are out going to pick people up, but I don't know how many they have. I also don't know what responsibility UK has for securing the airport. 82d GRF is a heavy battalion so maybe 900ish. I don't know how many on the ground but I think the number prior to a week ago was only 2500, I think most of those are out of country.
Now another thing that Austin did not say explicitly is that there is some deal that allowed the 82d to land at HKIA so long as they did not leave the airport grounds but that seems to be the case.

My dad told me my grandma took him to pick out live chickens. Cut their heads off and spun them in a thing that took the feathers off. One chicken for 7 kids plus soup on a wood stove. They're mostly all dead but liked the piece they always got. Oldest got the neck. My favorite is the back.

Oh yes, I've heard that one. And seen in it action. My father told me about that once, and pointed out several examples of it locally. One was a hardware store in Simpsonville. The old man built it up to booming business, with a YUGE warehouse. If he didn't have it there, you couldn't get it anywhere, just about. Hell, people would come up from Columbia to get shit.
Second generation maintained it. And they were getting old when I was a kid in the '70s. When the grandchildren took it over, it went downhill fast.
It's just a memory now.

I remember that warehouse as a kid. YUGE. So much shit they current staff didn't know half of what was in there. My father needed some sort of very odd-ball plow bolts for an old set of cultivators. I can't remember, but he remembered the old man used to keep a shit ton of those.
They told us to go out in that warehouse and have at it, 'cause they had no idea where. After a couple of hours searching, my father found 'em, buried somewhere.
They had no idea how much to charge for 'em, cause there wasn't any records. They told him to just take 'em, they'd been paid for years ago.

I woke up this morning above ground instead of below it, so everything after that has been bonus time.
I hope to see you again in the Lone Star State again this year. It so far has cost me twice as much as last year with airfare and hotel, and still now way except a 3 figure Uber ride from the airport to get to the ranch, but it's worth it! I still have lots of time to remedy that, so all good.

Agreed. Reviewing the information from the last week, it's apparent this administration is prioritizing deflecting blame than rescuing trapped Americans. Their primary concern is themselves.
So I would expect to see something like a Terror Alert or stricter lockdowns that gives them an excuse for putting armed guards between them and the public. Especially if they are predicting increasing rage over something like daily executions of captured Americans by the Taliban.

Yeah, it's interesting how the military has in large part been deployed "over there" for decades, iincluding the statenational guard units. While our own borders have been wide open. They've even got idiots in government (and the press, and academia) that claim using American troops to prevent from being invaded is illegal. Posse Comitatus.
But those were all delusjons proffered before the Ones We've Been Waiting For wrested control. Don't expect to hear any objections if and when American Troops are deployed on Americans. Just ask Swallowell and the other lunatics who fantasize about nuking the heartland.
