If China Moves Into Afghanistan, There Will Be Significant Differences Between Its Conduct And That Of The Other Empires That Tried And Failed To Subjugate The Afghans

The Persians, the Greeks, the Arabs, Tamerlane, the British, the Soviet Union, and now America (and I am sure to be missing a few); all tried and failed to conquer, hold and convert Afghanistan to their version of modernity, or subservience, or political orthodoxy.

The Afghans were fiercely tribal long before Islam, and seem to unite only against invaders, against whom they have had success for 2,500 years! They play the long game, and have demonstrated throughout their history a passing interest, if any, in the value of human life. There are great swaths of the country that are unchanged from the time of the Mongols. Many tribes are comfortable living a medieval life, governed by Islam, with the improvements of modern weapons and cell phones.

So why would China attempt a conquest? They have ample evidence of the impossibility of controlling the country. Why should they try when all they want is the economic benefits of all of Afghanistan's mineral wealth, estimated to be in the many hundreds of billions of dollars?

All they will do is strip the Afghans of their wealth, just as they do in Africa, and in return they will be friends of the Taliban, defending them at the UN and on the world stage. And maybe China will use Afghanistan as a conduit for solidifying its presence in the area.

China doesn't "nation build." China takes what it needs and will protect its interests. If the Taliban grow weary of the Chinese presence and begin to push back, then it will get interesting, but it would be in China's best interest to keep the relationship strictly business. The Taliban have a good relationship with Pakistan, as does China, so there is a template in place, and mutual friends to smooth away strife caused by China's theft of Afghanistan's natural resources. And, As America has discovered to its chagrin, China is adept at buying friends, and one would assume that Afghan "friends" are far less expensive than the American variety.

Who knows, maybe China will use Afghanistan as a dumping ground for its own Muslim population, the Uyghurs.

7 I don't think China wants all of Afghanistan. They want to control a few parts to extract minerals. They will use bribery and force to get what they want. And their use of force will make the Soviets look like school children. The ChiComs know how to oppress people. And they will be able to manipulate Pakistan at the same time, leaving the Taliban with few regimes to turn to for assistance.

If the Chinese Communists conclude that is in their interest to, for example, sanitize large areas of Afghanistan with nerve gas or other toxins, they will do so as if spraying insect pests, and the world will do nothing.

They just created a disease and told no one as it propagated around the world. No response from the world. And it was part of an ongoing program to create new diseases, it just escaped early. The mentality behind this is an existential threat. The lack of will to face up to this is also an existential threat.

38 If China invades Afghanistan it would be good for vertical integration.

By controlling the opium trade, they will be able to marry the sweet, sweet Chinese Fentanyl with the Afghani heroin in a pre-mixed fashion and save on shipping when they send it over to America to kill off all of our children!

In this way it hastens the demise of the American republic. You get willing doctors and pharmacy corporations to put all the oldies on opioids for their pain until the opioids no longer work and they blow their heads off. Meanwhile, you get every low-income 20-something to blow a vein and die.

Couple that with the commie push for chopping your privates off or sucking off same-sex partners, and you should be able to finish America off in 20
to 30 years.

The Russians tried the hard core approach, and it didn't work any better there than the milksop hearts and minds routine.

I figure the talis will let China in to build up the mining infrastructure, then toss the bastards out and take over the equipment. Then use the bulldozers to reenact Tiananmen Square.

I do not know why US and EU countries did not mine in Afghanistan. A possible reason: The millions of tons of valuable metals may not be easily mined. Concentration may be a small quantity per ton of ore. Add this to the risk of the Taliban destroying underground mines and expensive mining equipment and ore processing plants, and cutting road and rail lines.

Trump's mere presence scares the Taliban off from terror against the US, the Chinese from even thinking about Taiwan, Russia from taking Ukraine, Iran and the Norks from trying to go nuclear, keeps Israel and the Gulf Arabs close, puts limits on illegal immigration, prevents the mass exodus of barbaric Afghans , keeps gas prices low and we probably get Greenland and it's trillions of natural resources.

48 Hmmm. China isn't "going into A'stan". No reason or need.

Taliban has already signaled they're cool with Chinese oppression of Uyghurs (I think we need to work up the number of alternative transliterations of this word to equal those for Qaddafi). In effect. "Internal affair" of China, said a Taliban leader when asked a pointed question about it (note: 8th Century fanatic insurgent leaders in primitive war-zone countries actually get asked tough questions - something those in America may vaguely recall).

If the mineral potential pans out (heh), then Chinese $$$ will be there to get their share. But not really a big deal, geopolitically.

Of course we weren't there for a non-existent "empire", or $$$, or minerals, and the story really is how we went from 12 guys on donkeys, with sat phones and air support, to 100K+ troops and attempting to stand up an actual state with a real army. Our initial involvement was involuntary and driven entirely by events.

That's not supposed to be funny. It's fact. The Mongols kicked the shit out of the Afghans, looked around, saw what they got for their trouble and left. The same can be said about all the others.

It's not worth fighting for. It is a piece of shit. And the Taliban is hardly Afghan. It's Shia and Sunni muzzies showing up to fight the Great Satan.

110 Well one thing's for sure, we've got to completely change the approach to all things military, so that there's not a dime of profit in any aspect (I guess actual soldiers will still be paid) of any conflict.

Govt. arsenals must be reinstituted to produce *all* military hardware and technology (off-the-shelf buys will be verboten - possibility someone will make a dime off of that) on a non-profit basis. Zero defense industry.

No ex-military from private to 4-star can be allowed to participate in any way in any form of military-related activity after service. Except on a voluntary basis, no pay or profit.

That and imposing a 2-month "exit strategy" time limit on any military action should do it. Oh, and FFS get rid of the expeditionary forces (bye bye USMC, except for 2 MEUs for embassy evacuation, which should be a robust business). And reduce the armed forces by about 75%, to provide for actual defense of CONUS.

Probably a lot. But probably less than how many Chinese students are coming here to swipe info and infiltrate institutions. A lot of Afghans have been killed by the taliban, these are no "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" but still traveling back and forth from China on student visas or getting "citizenships" in order to work for the NSA. At this point we can't tell how many of the "translators" were working for the taliban, but we can assume all the Chinese (or Iranians for that matter) are pre-approved by their regimes.
The Afghan former president who took millions has an American daughter who seems pretty assimilated.

120 Problem with mining ore is that it requires vast investment in fixed infrastructure which then has to be maintained and defended. Building & maintaining this infrastructure, operating the mines, driving trucks & trains, etc. requires a lot of manpower.

The high altitude mountain terrain and cloud cover removes the modern advantages of armor, air power & artillery. Firing arcs are blocked, it's difficult to transit through peaks and valleys without using ambush prone roads or tunnels, etc. Figure in the difficulty of building the roads & rails.

I get the feeling that the CCP will wind up coming to the same conclusion as everyone else. Afghanistan isn't worth conquering. There's not enough of a return on investment between the terrain and the whack a mole-hide-in-cave-never-give up insurgents. The CCP's friendly relationship with Pakistan isn't in the tribal regions bordering Afghanistan. It would be cheaper & easier to buy off the more civilized and similarly resourced Stans to the north than dealing with shit neighbors to the south.

121 "China takes what it needs and will protect its interests"

And @22:

Both correct. The Afghanis, including the most Westernized, preferred their indigenous Taliban to the even more depraved Woke Taliban, which obviously is hated and despised here as well.

The PRC will not try to promote Marxism or Confuciunism or any other foreign ideology on the people of Afghanistan. It probably wouldn't have, anyhow, but the historic defeated of the United States just drove that point home.

Just as the Taliban toppled the Woke Empire's puppet government in Kabul, we can destroy the Woke Empire's puppet regime in D.C. albeit with different, non-violent tactics. Fortunately we have options other than the Taliban. Distancing ourselves from this ludicrous oppression and marginalizing it has to be the primary method to prevail.

The Woke Empire's just got a good taste of how much its insane beliefs are despised. It will in due time implode.

Afghanistan was a horror for the American people and will prove a mineral-rich bonanza for the PRC. But we can take some comfort in the fact the Woke Taliban is hated and can be defeated in the most humiliating fashion possible.

The wealth of any country is largely in its human capital. Afghanistan hasn't much to strip. Anyone who mines and drills in areas of low human capital could be said to be 'stripping' these places of their wealth. The non-stripping course of action would be to leave the stuff in the ground until the social system of the country in question could generate from it's indigenous population to exploit those minerals without foreign direct investment.

185 China doesn't "nation build."
---

China has been very sly in how it is colonizing the planet. For the First World they dangled their vast consumer markets as bait to Western economies and once hooked they hollowed them out via technology transfers/theft and their ever expanding manufacturing base. In the Third World, they used this new wealth via its Belt and Roads program, a very clever method of colonization because it doesn't require much military effort, to strip mine the planet for natural resources needed to feed their economic, political, and military build out.

If they move on Afghanistan, most likely when, they will also be playing a long game. Their march to today began with Nixon in 1972 and in earnest in 1979 when Deng Xiaoping came to the US. I doubt they will lose focus and nation build. And if events go off the rails the Taliban and the world will find out just how ruthless the Chicoms are willing to be. How that plays out will be a warning to all other nations if the Chicoms become the dominant force on the planet. Our not so excellent Afghani adventure now ending with what will be Biden's legacy very well could set off a global power reordering.

199 Recently-stated Biden Junta reasons why no one knows how many US civilians are now in A-stan:

- US passport holders are not required to register with the Embassy upon arrival in-country. So State does not know how many were in Afghanistan a week ago.

- US passport holders are not required to notify the Embassy when they leave, even if they registered upon arrival. So, State cannot know how many of the unknown number in-country a week ago are now actually out and safe, because an unknown number have gotten out of Kabul on commercial and charter flights, or by road to Pakistan.

What a mess. The above tells me it was criminal to not order US civilians out before we gave up Bagram and pulled the remaining 2,500 military personnel out. But getting plain old US CITIZENS out safely was not a consideration for Joe until several days ago.

Exactamundo. Also, any US passport-holder, let alone SIV holder, more than nine days vehicle and walking travel from a Kabul airport entrance gate is going to be SOL as far as Joe is concerned. Assuming travel is possible at all across TBD miles of Taliban-patrolled roads and goat-paths, even with ten to twenty thousand dollars of greenbacks in hand at the start. If they can't get through on their own in time their only hope is Joe paying the Taliban to bring them to Kabul or an arranged helo pick-up location.

It's been a while, but IIRC, Elias was Perkins Coie's guy on the DNC, Hillary campaign, and Fusion GPS accounts. Tony Blair has blasted Joe Biden's 'imbecilic' decision to withdraw US troops from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, calling the President's scuttle 'tragic, dangerous and unnecessary' and claiming the move had 'every Jihadist group round the world cheering'.

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Mr Blair said he has 'enormous respect' for Mr Biden, but suggested the President - who campaigned on a slogan of ending 'forever wars' and is likely to be keeping an eye on next year's midterms - had withdrawn US troops for domestic political reasons.

Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, thanks to Britain & Russia in 1893, links to China. There's a road, under construction, that connects the two countries. Google Earth suggests that the W.Corridor is mostly a mountain ridge.

If the Afghani mineral wealth plays out, China could easily transport in thousands of Chinese "workers" to remove any Afghan trouble. The Taliban would likely get some small payments at first, but as Chinese involvement and investment increase, the Taliban would find themselves out; all the way out.

I can see the Chinese spraying paraquat, or something similar, all over the Afghan poppy fields, to keep the Taliban from getting enough money to stand up to the Chinese.

Afghanistan's title of "Graveyard of Empires" really looks like hype. Alexander marched through it, the British and Russians used it as a border, we only wanted bin Laden. No one has ever made much of an effort in Afghanistan, either to subdue it, or to stay. Now, with the mineral wealth, believed to be enormous, the Chinese take their turn. Only this time, unlike the past, the Chinese are likely to make a long term and major effort.

351 "China doesn't "nation build." China takes what it needs and will protect its interests. And, As America has discovered to its chagrin, China is adept at buying friends, and one would assume that Afghan "friends" are far less expensive than the American variety."

Yeah? And? Maybe we should start doing this. If people want to sell us their stuff, we'll buy it. If not, that's their loss. They need our money more than we need their cadmium. It makes a lot more sense to buy it with greenbacks then with the blood and limbs of nineteen-year-olds.

381 I'm in the group that says the mining potential is vastly overstated. You can't set up large scale modern mining operations in a barbarian wasteland. You need ports, a reliable power grid, rail and freight operations, highways, etc etc. Afghanistan is still centuries away from all of that.

Possibly if there was some highly concentrated bit of something rare, one could set up a small boutique mining operation that was self contained. But that's unlikely.

What the Taliban don't understand is that the Chinese, if they consider the ground important, will simply exterminate every man, woman, and child they can if they cause problems. They don't care about human life one little bit. They can always ship millions of Chinese to colonize after the stench clears a little from all the bodies...

Again.

She has since fled to Vietnam to get as far away as possible from the smell of old man and abject failure, but mostly abject failure. Except she unfortunately carries around a bottle of Eau de Failure in her purse like Hillary carries around hot sauce and vodka nips. In fairness, it's not her fault that Joe also sold out the South Vietnamese. She was just a little girl riding on Biden's segregated school bus, blaming the Beaver for her missing homework.

Always the Beaver.

427 Except . . . quite a few tried and succeeded in conquering and converting Afghanistan.
The Persians conquered it and converted the people to Zoroastrianism, the Indians switched it to Buddhism, and the Arabs to Islam.
Within those were multiple sub-groups that held it for 1-2 centuries before being replaced, or using it to conquer Persia or India.
The only people so far to fail to conquer it and convert the people, or use it as a springboard for greater conquests, have been the British, Russians, and Americans, to Christianity for the former two and Social Justice for the latter. And while a family dynasty of 1-2 centuries may not seem that impressive, it is still conquest, with the religious outliving the original usurpers, and Islam holding the current record at 11-1/2 centuries or so.
So this concept that Afghanistan cannot be conquered, held, and converted is false, with only the parsing of "modernity" being vaguely valid, and then only for the ones that failed to establish a dynasty for a century or so.
That should not be taken to exclude the Chinese from an actual conquest, given their lack of political "modernity".

431 "The Persians, the Greeks, the Arabs, Tamerlane, the British, the Soviet Union, and now America (and I am sure to be missing a few); all tried and failed to conquer, hold and convert Afghanistan to their version of modernity, or subservience, or political orthodoxy."

wrong. Before the British pretty much everyone held on to it just fine. The deep impression of Turkic and Mongol rule is the name Khan which is Turkic ,not Pustun in origin. Afghanistan historically has been under foreign rule than soveriegn.

432 @427
"The Persians conquered it and converted the people to Zoroastrianism, the Indians switched it to Buddhism, and the Arabs to Islam."

Not quite. The persians did not prefer to impose their religion on others. Even today apart from Judaism and Hinduism, Zoroastrianiasm is the only major world religion that does not seek converts. However Afghanistan was a grand central station for many faiths and cultures. From Graeco Buddhism( Hindus prior to Greek invasion did not represent dieties with statues, Buddha was represented in art work as a tree) , Central Asian shamanism, pre Zoroastrian Iranic dieties among others. Heck some Kushan emperors who were Buddist even assumed Caesar as a title.

Actually much of Afganistan was not tribal for a lot of its history but cosmopolitan. An Assyrian traveller under Kushan rule noted that Afghan women had considerable independence, financial and sexual , and that Afghan men were a tad soft with tendency to be dandies.
So this notion that they were these grizzled warlords from time immemorial has nothing to do with reality.
