The $250,000 American Airlines’ Lifetime Tickets Back in 1980, American Airlines, reeling from the effect of deregulation, decided to offer a promotion. They sold tickets offering unlimited first class travel for life, to anywhere AA serviced for $250,000. For an extra $150K you could add a +1. Only 28 people bought the tickets, but they injected badly needed cash into AA's bottom line. Steve Rothstein is one of the people who took advantage of the offer. Ultimately, he made out. The value of the trips he took to over 100 countries was 84 times what he paid for the ticket. But he and the others fucked themselves. In a 4 year period, he booked 3000 flights and then canceled 2500 of them (which screws the airline because they wound up with an empty seat). Apparently he gave tickets to random people too. Ultimately, AA personnel stopped him at O'Hare and relieved him of the ticket for violating the terms of the agreement, as they did with the others who had purchased the golden tickets. The ensuing lawsuit was decided in the airline's favor. I have neither the resources to buy a quarter million dollar ticket, nor the leisure time to make it worthwhile, but if I did......I'd be all over a deal like that in a heartbeat. I'd also be smart enough not to do what Steve did and kill the golden goose. The reason the free market works is because it's a series of voluntary transactions where both parties benefit. If one party exploits a loophole to screw the other party, it all falls apart. Details are sparse. There's nothing in the published story, and the video clip is only 30 seconds long. This brat got mad at his mom and attempted to kick out an airplane window. He was restrained by other passengers and the flight attendants duct taped him to his seat. That's all we know, but at the risk of sounding like an old man, (Wait a minute. I am an old man. Oh boy, here goes!) If I had behaved in such a manner on a flight, my father would have kicked out the window and thrown me out himself (that's obviously not literally true, but it damn well is metaphorically true). Oh (indulge my inner curmudgeon), there's no mention of a father in the story. Hmmm. You see where I'm going with this. I freely admit that I may be wrong. I know nothing of the kid or his mother, and maybe he was just traveling with her and his loving dad was back at home for some reason. As I said, I may be wrong. Honestly. Truly. I may be so far off base with my speculation that I'm in the satellite parking lot outside the stadium. But I bet I'm not.

Donald Trump was a good, not great, president. He sabotaged himself by inviting the deep state into his inner circle, even as he publicly campaigned against it. I think his biggest failing came from his background. He was a businessman where he expected that as the boss, he had the ultimate authority, and when he said “this is what we are going to do” he expected it to be done. He never imagined that the people he brought in to actually execute his policies would say yes to his face and work tirelessly to undermine them. That's not how it works in the private sector, but he was seduced to bring in people “experienced in government” and ultimately wound up deferring to their “expertise”, when they were fucking him left and right in favor of the deep state. I THINK that he realized it by 2019, and that if he had been allowed to serve the second term that he was elected to he would have cleaned house, but we'll never know now, will we?

For Love Of Dora
A few weeks ago, I attended the NoVaMoMe. There was a raffle for door prizes, and I won a book called For Love Of Dora by a Moron author. He was present at the MoMe, and he even signed the book for me (I asked him to sign it “Stephen King” so it would be worth money, he signed it as “not Stephen King”. Bastard.) Anyhow, I finally got a chance to start reading it today, and I have to say, he's set his premise up well (a future universe where humans are colonizing other worlds, but one world has a native species on it. The native species is fighting back against the humans, using technology at about a WWII level, but the human government has forbidden the colony from using more advanced weaponry than the natives have because it wouldn't be “fair”. Add in a pinch of AI that powers the human's airplanes, AI that the human pilots come to think of as “real beings”, and it's a really intriguing premise). I'm not far into it, only 25 pages or so, but as I said, he's set up the premise well. I'm looking forward to finishing it. You should check it out.

I remember an SF story where an elderly woman has her husband come out of the basement saying his time machine invention is no good since it can't go way back in the past to see the Romans (wife thinks what would we do there, we cant speak the language) or travel the world it only goes to a corner in NYC during the depression.
Cuts to a butcher shop in NYC in the depression with no customers since nobody has money, wife comes in with some change and buys a bunch of nice roasts and steaks and gives the guy hope for recovery.

I remember one of the first science-fiction stories I read was by him and I was hooked. IIRC it was a surface mining scenario that could only be performed at night, and the robot had to choose the correct action to save two humans from a blazing sun. I don't remember any details beyond that but Asimov was very talented at creating and thinking those things out.

I wouldn't say it was for no reason: Austria and Russia had been pretty much at each other's throats for a while now over who would dominate the Balkans, and in the event of an open war, Germany was going to have to choose who it would side with. I can't blame the folks in Berlin for choosing their fellow German-speakers (though they definitely played a lot rougher with the Russians than they needed to).
More broadly, I think it's too easy to heap the blame on Germany for WWI. Yes, the Germans bore a lot of responsibility for it, but pre-war Europe was like the Five Families. Everyone was trying to out-muscle each other, and not at all above playing dirty to do it.

You might need a whole new faucet because I don't know if you can get just a matching replacement head for that. I mean doing the replacement will be a little more work, but its not like it can't be done. Have you thought about looking for some stuff that might dissolve all the sediment buildup so you don't need to replace?

Depends on how you're defining them, but my pick would be the French. I don't know if you'll be able to find exactly what you're looking for, but it sounds almost like it might be a filter. Regardless, you'll be able to go to the plumbing section and find new aerator caps and/or filters if you like, and there will generally be adaptors in the package if you don't know exactly what you have.
You might be able to carry the old part and match it up with something in the store, too.

Leaving aside the moral dimensions of the question, Hitler even eliminated groups that could have helped him achieve his war aims. Take the invasion of the Soviet Union. Pretty much the whole western third of the country was filled with ethnicities that HATED Stalin (for good reason, obviously) and would have happily joined with the Nazis to overthrow him. But Hitler immediately ordered policies to treat them as the Untermenschen he said they were, and slaughtered and brutalized enough of them to drive the survivors back into the Soviet camp--not universally, but often enough that they became of no help at all.
Stalin was a monster, but so was Hitler. And self-defeating to boot.

I want to comment on the segregation story. So, I've mentioned this before, but I'm mixed. My mom is Anglo and my dad is Hispanic/Chicano/Latino/Mexican-American whatever fucking phrase you want to use it changes all the time and it's fucking bullshit. Anyway, I'm mixed and I grew up (and still live) in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas which is like fucking 90% hispanic. Now this was true when I was a kid, but less so now that I'm an adult and live under a fucking rock. Fuck people. Anyway, there was a time in my life when people, and by people I mean Hispanics, were insistent that I was white. Like fucking *adamant*. Like, "No, fuck you, you're not one of us you're fucking white, white boy." It just seriously offended their entire world view and pissed them off that someone could be, ya know, a little of this and a little of that. Life has *lanes*. Stick to your fucking *LANE*! As others have said, first try cleaning it. If that doesn't work, I'd personally just buy a new faucet. Super easy to install. I'm sure there are YouTube videos out there if you haven't done it before. If you want to try to find a replacement for just that part, it probably exists on the internet, but I doubt Home Depot will have it.

Pohl's Hee-Chee series would be in the conversation as well.
There are so many that I haven't read, though, which breaks my heart to consider and accept. Wasp, for instance. I *just* read it, and it's wonderful. I could certainly see it being my favorite if I'd read it in my late teens or early 20s.

I took a go at that and gave it up. I am sorry about that because someone in the book thread wanted to discuss it with me when I finished it. I couldn't get past some of the Mormon stuff, it was very different than the fifty or so Louis L'amour Westerns I have read over the years. It is a classic for sure, but I am not sure it is particularly representative of the genre.

I'm with you - that one blew me away when I read it - not just for the imaginative story, but for the literary skill. It sounds crazy, but this is one of the only books where you can read the chapters in pretty much any order you want, and it still works. Because it's a cycle, and it goes round and round.

The fundamental problem of the West is that we don't have leaders anymore, we have a managerial class. Managers are fine, if they are subordinate to leadership. But leadership is a different skillset, and different mentality, than management.
A good leader often understands that symbolism, theater, etc. are important. Part of the reason that I like Trump, and why I think he was so successful, is that he managed to turn a political idea, "America First/MAGA" into a brand and a movement. That's leadership.
A leader would have understood the need for some sort of theatrics surrounding Bin Laden's body. A leader would have wanted such a ceremony as a way of unifying people and demonstrating American strength.

That can be very good, as they often understand how to use that system to greatest effect, but it also means that they tend to have blind spots with regards to solutions outside of it.

Ironically, the real issue Rome had was a kind of racism. All during its history, some 100 years or so after conquering an area Rome started pulling first troops and then leaders out of it. Hadrian/Trajan had a lot of Hispanic roots. Septimus Severus had roots in Syria and North Africa. The Illyrian emperors after that saved the Empire from breaking up. So right after that, as the Goths started taking a bigger part both halves of the empire - the Eastern half had a supreme General, Stilicho in the west was half Vandal - somehow it became impossible to have these descendants be full emperor, but instead they had a chain of child emperors with a general or eunuch over them. At key times they had pogroms wiping out the families of Goth troops in service.

I think the deep state is pretty incompetent and very leaky, so keeping it secret would be hard. However, a standard lame brained CIA project to use terrorists at some point getting out of hand and being turned by someone with some cleverness - THAT is pretty plausible.

In fact no "funny money" has ever lasted more than a hundred years or so, ever. US small size fed reserve notes debuted in 1914, that is damn remarkable. Sure there's been a lot inflation since then. But those notes are still legal tender. Point being, nobody knows when the music will stop

We got a Generac this summer. It runs on natural gas. So, as long as the nat gas pressure stays up, we would be ok without electricity.
The alternative would be propane, and again, if you have a big propane tank, you have power until it runs out.
Gasoline is pretty dangerous to store in a large quantity (100 gallons?). And again, once it is gone, you're out.

The Navy in its infinite wisdom decided to shut down Cecil Field, where we had room to grow and the city liked having us there, and move the -18's to Oceana. Several years later they wanted to go back, but Jacksonville said "Sorry, we're making a crap-ton of money off of that base now so you can't have it back."

You'd be amazed at how much fuel it takes to keep your house electrical load running. If the grid ever becomes iffy (and it well might), then you can be sure the fuel infrastructure will too.
I have been looking at generators. Me, I've got big tractors, and I'm looking at PTO generators. You can spend money on generator alone and not the engine to turn it.
I could easily get one to pull the whole house, everything, but the fuel drain would be something. I've got a 500 gallon diesel tank. That wouldn't last long, I assure you.
In the face colander times, one is going to need to minimize one's electrical dependency. Sort of go back to the old ways. A little electrical usage, freezers and refrigerators come to mind, but unless one has a good fuel supply, you can forget about the creature comforts.

Part of a prepper's equipment should be a fridge, (and ideally also a freezer) operating on the absorption principle, which can be driven by any source of heat. Commercial ones, as used in RV's, are mostly run by propane, but kerosene burners were used in years past. You could probably rig a little solar-powered muffin fan to draw heat from a wood fire into the fridge flue, too.

Well the starting point is prepare for no electricity. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
The first priority is water. A means to get it, and render it safe to drink bacteriologically. Good quality swiss filters, chemical disinfection, that kind of thing. Warm clothes, sleeping bags. Methods to boil water - 2 burner Coleman stoves are almost free for the asking. They will run on automotive gasoline, it isn't the preferred fuel but they run fine. Propane is good stuff too, doesn't spoil like gasoline.
Coffee. Tobacco, booze. Everything else is gravy.

I keep reading and hearing that. My martial arts master has told me she'll personally kick my ass and that i still have to come to class and do some of it there so she can keep an eye on my progress. So far, the PT is going well. Stairs, moving around with the walker, and the PT i had to do to get discharged are no problem.

I saw the memorial when I was 17. The place was crawling with Japanese tourists. Back home I told my dad that and he got extremely pissed off seeing as he spent a good part of his late teens killing Japanese.
I also got the honor of passing the memorial on a US Navy salvage ship. My buddy's brother was a radarman on the ship and it was family day. So they took the ship just outside of Pearl Harbor for demonstrations and BBQ. It was sober as the sailors all stood and saluted the Arizona as we passed her.

The is a warning flag for ADE effects kicking in.
In simple terms, the virus mutates a little, and your vaccines make infection worse against the mutated strain.

And I think I've been mixing up terms by wrongly using "non-binding"....no such animal? The good antibodies are the neutralizing ones, the "binding-only" are the one that attach but don't stop the virus, right?

Exactly. Neutralizing antibodies stop the virus from infecting. "Binding-only" manage to bind to the virus, but don't neutralize it. With ADE, they *make it worse*, enhancing the ability of the virus to infect the cells.
Now, ADE effects have been known naturally. Our own immune systems can mess up, too. But much rarer than the Top. Men. in Pharma and the medical-industrial complex.
They known of a few diseases where a second infection becomes much worse than the first, and later figured out it was this ADE effect.

I am old school. I am not really that old but I feel that old. I recall when Europe had the Black Death and it happened twice. The impact was so beyond this as they are almost incomparable. But even they did not have Delta.
I am not saying it doesn't exist. Crap, a lot of bad things exist. My point is even Europe moved on. My concern is we will never move on.
I like most have been masked at times, unmasked 90 percent of the time. Jabbed and never masked again. I am not saying I can't get it, anything is possible. But if this never ends it will be out a of a scene of Lost. When is the Echo variant going to rage? I am not saying they are not real, that is not my point.
To me it comes down to living life or bunker mentality. It has been almost two years now and for some reason I did not catch it. I did some things to prevent it but only the bare minimum. What scares me the most is people are now trained to do whatever the majority asks. I" know this is regional and mostly confined to cities, but still it is scary.

Coronaviruses are notorious for ADE effects. This is known. There has never been a successful vaccine against a coronavirus in humans before. Never. They tried with the first SARS, Sars-Cov-1, also a coronavirus.
They failed. Why? ADE effects in animal studies. They tried for the "N-protein" immunity, the type your natural immune system develops. This caused ADE effects in animal studies like crazy. So, they started looking at the spike (S proteins) over the N-proteins.

the numbers bounce around every day depending on what the MSM is pushing. My understanding is the percentage of vaccinated who have died from China Flu is almost infinitesimal. And then you have to ask how old they were, and what else they were dying of.
I have seen some pro golfers as an example who were unvaxxed, got it, and were never sick. They were not sick when they got it and they played at the highest level weeks later. My guess is the truth about this will come out maybe decades after the event.

Which is useless to me as a stat. 0.1 to 5.0 is quite a range of uncertainty. 1 in 20 to 1 in a thousand? I don't think they really know.

Exactly. The Israelis are working on a N-protein vaccine. It will target 3 N-protein epitopes. Much better than the single spike. But still nothing like natural immunity. You own immune system targets far more than 3 N-protein epitopes.
Broad spectrum N-protein is the only way to get to sterilizing immunity with a coronavirus. Vanden Bossche has said the only way to do this is with a live, attenuated virus vaccine. That's the only way to get the broad-spectrum N protein recognition.
And that's hard to do. It would take decades to do this safely.

I never got close to meeting a Great Grand Parent. One side went away quickly but mostly the dad. My Grand Parents on the other side were some of the best times I ever had. I know not all are able to do it, but I have so many good memories.

good question, I thought someone might ask that. It is when a basketball player keeps making shots over and over. A heat test is when he takes an almost impossible shot or a really unusual shot because he is making everything. I have had some incredible experiences on that day unrelated to my birthday. There were a few major days that happened on that day. And as I mentioned before, even though it gave away my exact age, we watched Friday the 13th part 3 on my 13th Birthday.
What I want to know is how we got away with it. Things were too lenient back then lol. Even then we had Karens and their male counterparts. Most were people you never wanted to follow for any reason.
