Pic Note:

I've shown Alexandra a couple of years ago. Also her sister Andrea. What I found odd about this photo are the chess pieces, particularly the black king, which looks oddly bent. Probably the plastic molding had some defect, but I prefer to think that the intense mental energy emanating from Ms. Botez' chess brain is causing it to melt.

White can force mate in 5 moves. There are two main lines, both of which start out with:

1. Rxh7+

Black has two possible responses. The first one, chosen by my app, is

1...Kxh7

which results in this line:

2.Qh4+ Kg6
3.Qg4+ Kh7
4.Qh5+ Bh6
5.Qxh6#

The second is

1...Qxh7

and this is the line I came up with:

2.Qxf8+ Qg8
3.Qh6+ Qh7
4.Qf6+ Kg8 (or 4...Qg7 5.Qxg7#)
5.Qd8#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

4BK2/6P1/5k2/8/8/1b6/8/8 w - - 0 1

White has two tasks here: 1) safely queen his pawn and 2) pick off Black's bishop. I suppose it's possible to win without actually taking the bishop, but it may take awhile. Anyway, full credit is given if you can get #1 accomplished. And the say to do that is to seize control of the a2-g8 diagonal.

There are a number of possible lines. Here is one of them:

1.Ba4 Be6
2.Bc2 Ke5 (or 2...Ba2 3.Bh7 Bb3 4.Bg8 Bc2 5.Bc4 Bh7 6.Bd3 Bxd3 7.g8=Q)
3.Bg6 Kf6
4.Bh7 Ke5
5.Bg8 Bf5
6.Bf7 Bh7
7.Bg6 and wins.

Black's bishop is trapped and will soon be captured.

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

I haven't bought one of those, but 75% of the time I've gone to AutoZone to have them read the code for free, that's been the problem. Now, if my car throws a code, I check that first thing.

28 I've been on AOS quite a while now, but haven't participated in the chess thread because I didn't play. Then I ran into a web serial called "The Wandering Inn", where the primary protagonist is a chess prodigy. She made it sound so interesting that about six weeks ago I started the chess.com lessons, and have just gotten to the intermediate level.

I played with my husband a few times, many years ago, but he usually trashed me in 3-4 moves, so I gave up. Now, if he were still around, I flatter myself I'd do at least a bit better. Now looking for people to play with, and may have found a chess club here in Nac ... going to check out the coffee house where they supposedly meet some time this coming week, to find out if they still exist.

Don't know how active I'll be here, given my barely-a-beginner status, but I may sneak in to the discussions now and then with a dumb question or so.

That was what annoyed me. I'd been a client there from 2002 to 2010, when this happened. They'd never sent a note or anything before, but when they'd handled the deaths of the previous cats, they spoke to me in person at the time. I just expected a little more . . . acknowledgment.

It's enormously time-consuming (the one small project I did cured me of doing any more) and a garment would weigh a ton, but it is stunning.

The key to queening is to remove control of g8 by Black's bishop so:

1. Ba4 Bishops move on same diagonal (not BxB or e8(Q)
2. Bc2 same as above
3. Bh7 same-same
4. Bg8 and breaks the Black bishop's hold on g8

I'm too lazy to figure out all the exact lines, so will leave that to the reader as an exercise :-)

I was going to ask if the pic was fake, modern with a sepia tone and distressed to make it look old. The waist on that skirt looks a bit too fashionable (although I guess everything comes back around again).

His wife wanted me to thank my wife for the bracelet she received from her. It was a Lord's Prayer bracelet that my wife received when our oldest died 10 yrs ago.

My wife got it from a friend who got it when her mother passed. That friend got it from her friend who received it when her father passed.

None of that probably makes sense, but I had no idea my wife did that. Made me cry.

I'm so blessed to be married to her.

Abandoned carts are old news in this apartment complex. There are still plenty of kids scurrying and shrieking outside, though. But the place is being run by "people" who have no concept of how to deal with a property this size. The tragedy is that when I moved in here the first time in '91, it was *great*, and old-timers who'd been here for a long time back then told me that it used to be *the* place to live in this area.

The buildings, done in a sort of neo-French chateau style, still look great, and the A/C is good. But it's getting to be a pesthole within the larger pesthole of the city.

Well, she was doing good. Unfortunately, last week she got dehydrated and BP dropped. Had to go to cancer clinic in STL for fluids. They wanted to send her to ER around 7p 'coz due to covid the clinic has staff cut and limited their hours.

Pretty sure that's been underway for a couple of days. The primary go-to force for evacuation of US citizens is the Marines. Marines from the region are supposed to have secured Kabul airport by now. The 82d ready force can be wheels up in 18 hours or less. (We were actually wheels up on the airplanes for Grenada in 12 hours.) Of course, time of flight to Afghanistan from Fort Bragg is the better part of a day, depending on refueling capability enroute.

We'll see soon enough, but it's not all that likely that there will be that much trouble evacing the US personnel. As I said in comment in earlier thread, Taliban would be smart to let us skedaddle without much interference - there's no net benefit to messing with it, and some pain (several airstrikes last few days with many martyrs).

Not having the actual facts I'm reluctant to opine on the 2nd-guessing stuff, but it does seem that there were fundamental mistakes made. Giving up Baghram, before we'd reached our minimum level of presence, struck me as very odd when it happened - and it is definitely an issue now. Level of embassy and US national personnel probably should have been drawn down at least a bit out of prudence, earlier.

However, recall all these things are connected. Draw down US personnel = local partners lose confidence = fear and disintegration accelerate = bad. A bit of a delicate ballet.

Not necessary if you really wanted to shut it down. The approach to the runway has a mountain in the way, so you have to do an "s" on landing (takeoff is the other direction). Just sit at the mountain with a MANPAD. Or threaten to.

My hope (and I think the current planning assumption) is that the evacuation will be permissive. The Taliban have no logical reason to want us not to leave. Indeed, that's one of the things they've been insisting on for 20 years.

True, and recall that it was Stumblin' Joe and his boss Baracky who did not seriously attempt to re-negotiate Bush's Withdrawal of Forces from Iraq agreement, against the recommendation of the Pentagon. So all US troops were withdrawn form Iraq by the end of 2011, per the agreement done by Bush.

Joe does not want responsibility for difficult military situations. Hell, no one does, but a leader must take-on the hard jobs, not only the easy ones.

I believe Trump and now Biden had/have the correct idea: Pull our combat forces out of Afghanistan. It is a sucking chest wound for us, militarily. We cannot force the Afghan Government forces to fight if they are unwilling. It is pretty-much the same it was in South Vietnam: The soldiers would not stand and fight on behalf of a weak and corrupt government. However, Joe needed to make a better exit.

So, our sprinkler controller went kaput and I've been tres busy, and I decided despite the probable high fee of around $300 or so for a new one plus less than half an hour to install, to get it done fast since the weather has been very hot and dry.

I went thru an Angi's List co. and requested an estimate before they came out, which they d id not do, and then showed up late and went thru a 10 minute song and dance about their latest and greatest for only $859+. When I said I just wanted a replacement for what I had, he said they only install the expensive one, and then waited for me to agree. Does that actually work on people?

I didn't, of course, and sent him on his way. But, he wanted a $100+ service charge and I said nope- you didn't give me an estimate before you came out, so you wasted your own time because for $859+ I would've told you don't come.

So-o-o-o, in the ned I ordered a controller from Amazon and installed it myself with one of the kiddos in roughly half and hour, which is less time than it took me waiting for that lame-ass late a-hole.

Lesson learned: Just do it yourself when you know you can anyway.

Problem with a downstream O2 sensor in the exhaust system. Try re-installing the gas cap, tighter, If no joy, buy a new gas cap and see if that works to gewt the engine light off. I had this problem with a 97 Toyota Tacoma. A new gas cap made the engine light and error code go away.

Info:

The downstream oxygen sensor is used to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. It also measures the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust. An exhaust stream that is in lean condition has more oxygen present in it, which prompts the oxygen sensor to send a low signal. However, if the exhaust stream is in rich condition and there is less oxygen in it, the voltage signal increases.

He had confusion along with extremely high BP that he had never had before. He completely recovered within hours of hospitalization and now maintains his Bp with meds and checking it at home daily. MDs said this can happen in some individuals and they do not know why.

Killed my grandfather. I think more illness is hereditary than they say it is. Bro is ok but he's worried as shit.

In my mind, the military is different than soldiers, though the line is blurring.

I see so many soldiers everyday. I don't know how they do it. But the ones I do see carry or have carried weapons.

1. B-a4 B-d5 (if BxB, then P-g8=Q and it's pretty much over)
2. B-c2 K-g5 (too late to stop the bishop moving in from the h file)
3. B-h7 K-h6
4. B-g8 and the black bishop has to move off the diagonal to save himself, allowing
5. B-f7 and then 6. P-g8=Q
