Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Lazy Man's Guide to GAINZZZAn interesting study came out last week which added further evidence to the notion that it only takes a fairly small amount of vigorous exercise to gain muscle and strength. John Sexton at Hot Air: All of that to say, I was pretty intrigued by this NY Times piece that popped up yesterday about some new research that suggests all you really need to do to see health and strength benefits is 4 seconds of real effort. Well, that’s not quite true. You have to repeat those four seconds a couple dozen times with brief breaks in between but it still adds up to about 10-15 minutes total per workout. That jibes with a study noted by Andrew Huberman, that only 10% of your exercise per week needs to be high intensity/peak effort to get significant benefits. The rest can be moderate intensity. One thing I've read and heard again and again -- I think I first read it in Tim Ferris' The Four Hour Body, which is all about achieving GOALZZZ in the laziest way possible -- is that all-out sprinting for about ten seconds, then walking/resting for a minute or two, then sprinting again for a few cycles, counts as that kind of "peak exertion." I've wanted to try that for a long time, and so I just did. I just all-out sprinted seven or eight times for eight to ten seconds. First time I've really run full-out for at least two years. It's Sad! to admit this, but because I haven't really run in a while, the running was not accomplished purely through my passive brain function. I actually had to use my active brain to direct my legs: knees up higher, step out further! It felt pretty good and with all that resting in between sprints, it didn't demolish me. I think I'll do that weekly, and see if this idea has any merit. Note that running and sprinting are high impact and can be rough on joints and tendons so don't do that until you've toughed yourself up with a couple of months of vigorous walking. I have not tried the 100 push-ups per day regimen yet because 1, I wanted to do it with you guys and 2, I'm lazy and the floor is dirty and I'm lazy about that too so I don't want to vacuum. (Note: this doesn't mean one set of 100 push-ups. It means as many sets as needed, spaced over the entirety of the day. Ten sets of ten push-ups would do it, though that would be a lot of time getting down on the floor.) But if anyone wants to start that crazy adventure with me this week, let's do it. Note that only in-shape people are going to be able to do 100 push-ups in a day. The rest of us will have to start out with 30 or 40 and build up from there. One thing Tim Ferris is always talking about is the Minimum Effective Dose -- the very minimum amount of something you have to do to see a positive change. And usually that Minimum Effective Dose is quite small. If you're out of shape, doing just 15 push-ups per day would be an effective dose. Also note that push-ups from the knees are a good form of the exercise too. It reduces the amount of strength needed to do a push-up. Full push-ups can be built up into, too. Maybe a reasonable goal would be 100 push-ups per day by the end of a month. The 100 push-ups per day is the goal, not the starting point. Optimistic article found through Instapundit: You can get better at some mental tasks as you age. It's long been believed that advancing age leads to broad declines in our mental abilities. Now new research from Georgetown University Medical Center offers surprisingly good news by countering this view. The findings, published August 19, 2021, in Nature Human Behaviour, show that two key brain functions, which allow us to attend to new information and to focus on what’s important in a given situation, can in fact improve in older individuals. These functions underlie critical aspects of cognition such as memory, decision making, and self-control, and even navigation, math, language, and reading. "These results are amazing, and have important consequences for how we should view aging," says the study's senior investigator, Michael T. Ullman, PhD, a professor in the Department of Neuroscience, and Director of Georgetown’s Brain and Language Lab. "People have widely assumed that attention and executive functions decline with age, despite intriguing hints from some smaller-scale studies that raised questions about these assumptions," he says. "But the results from our large study indicate that critical elements of these abilities actually improve during aging, likely because we simply practice these skills throughout our life." "This is all the more important because of the rapidly aging population, both in the US and around the world," Ullman says. He adds that with further research, it may be possible to deliberately improve these skills as protection against brain decline in healthy aging and disorders.I'm going to assume GAINZZZ help with that, because bodily GAINZZZ almost always create mental GAINZZZ, too. And speaking of longevity: A 100-year-old woman -- a great-great-grandmother -- is the world's oldest powerlifter. A friend points out that she looks and talks as if she's just 70. Longevity GAINZZZ. I stopped my regime of semi-fasting/full-fasting this week. I wound up losing about 28 pounds, after re-gaining some lost water. Eh. I need to get actually lean for once in my life. What about yo' GAINZZZ? Any GAINZZZ to report? And of course -- BOOKZZZ to recommend? PROJEXZZZ? One of my favorite things is the tomahawk steak. I'll be getting one soon now that I'm done with this round of semi-fasting/fasting.

Sounds about right: the seconds it takes to do the work set when lifting weights don't add up to that much time. It's the warm-up sets and the rest between that takes so long.
Haven't figured out how to get to maximum effort without the warmup and the resting between sets, though. Posted by: Not From Around Here at August 20, 2021 05:59 PM (wrzAm) 22

I gotta start the pull-ups again. A couple of years ago I was able to do pull-ips for the first time in my life (pretty much). I was doing 6 or 8 per set. I've lost all that but if I did it once i can get it back. there are good videos about how to build up to the first pull up. BTW with pull-ups there's a skill to it, you have to know how to activate the muscles needed for it.
The good part is that you can learn this pretty quickly. the other good part is that it means that people are actually closer to being able to do a pull-up than they might think; it's just a matter of picking up a semi-easy kill. they do need to add muscle, most likely, but they also just need to learn how to do the exercise efficiently. Once you know how to do it right, it doesn't seem so difficult. Posted by: ace at August 20, 2021 06:08 PM (0G13K) 46

Thankfully, I didn't take on much weight GAINZZZ during the family vacation last week. I'm back to the typical weekly exercise regimen this week, so I'll hopefully eliminate the three additional pounds that I brought back as a souvenir.
I gained seven pounds, but had had the foresight to drop four about a week before leaving, so like you I was up three on Wednesday morning after driving home. Mine was a two-week trip. This weight gain happens every time. Two days of eating light (and no bread, grains, or flour) brought me back to my target weight this morning. And now I get to start trying out recipes from the vintage cookbooks I picked up at antique malls around Missouri and West Michigan. I started doing the lose four pounds, a week or two before visiting the family thing two years ago. It seems to work well. My familys eating habits are designed to spoil GAINZZ. Fixed my squat technique with some help. I was going down way to slow using up too much energy on the way down. Gained confidence the last few weeks with the movement and now almost bouncing out while exploding out the hole.
I hit 405 for 3 reps when only going for a 1 rep PR last week. (I'm very conscious of my knees from baseball so it was a huge mental W for me). Learning how to handstand walk at the moment. It's not easy at all, and I look goofy, but makes the people I like laugh so win/win. Posted by: Widespread Pepe at August 20, 2021 06:17 PM (Jz+Gi) 77
Yeah...about that NYT study.
Taking an untrained individual and increasing their baseline strength with that approach...well, anything works for 6-8 weeks. If you're trying to get stronger over time, and I mean competitively stronger, that program won't get you there. No one who steps on a platform competitively, uses anything remotely resembling that approach. For cardio gainzz, yeah that high intensity approach is commonly referred to as TABATA. If you're doing it right, you'll want to die at the end of the session...most people don't do it right...but they claim they do...YMMV. >>>81 ||Is it easier to do a pull-up with your hands gripping so your fingers face away from you or towards you?||
I've always heard (and personally experienced) the inward facing ones were easier. But I don't quite understand the biology of that. Palms facing towards you are called, properly, "chin-ups," and are easier, because you can use more of your bicep. Or, they will be easier for most people. Palms facing away from you are properly called "pull-ups" and they're harder, at least for most people. They're also the "better" exercise, because they're hitting more of the lat muscles that are hard to hit. It's very easy to find a billion exercises to work the biceps; you don't need to do a chin-up or pull-up to work them. But there aren't many good exercises to work the lats. so pull ups are preferred by most. Before starting I heard some some negativity about the series. "It's too woke in the later books." Umm. So I was looking for that stuff. If it's there in the first 5 books it's barely noticeable. A major plot driver is civil rights for dragons (they don't even get paid in European militaries) and, since these dragons are pretty cool, I don't have a problem with that. I DID notice that at one point the Brit govt. did a very bad thing. Just before that happened it was mentioned that there was a change in govt. and now the Tories were in charge. BLAME THE TORIES! At any rate, based on where I am in the series, I'm enjoying it immensely. A big talons up. Posted by: ArthurK at August 20, 2021 06:25 PM (Tz5Ai) 124

I read you can even build upper muscle mass simply by WALKING
granted you do have to swing them arms a bit but nothing dramatic, just a little bit more swinging like you just boinked one of Mannix hotties to reap the benefits. I also read you have to walk a minimum of 2.5 miles an hour. Im trying this now and already seeing some results, so this strikes me as a lazy man way to avoid doing multiple high intensity or moderate intensity workouts Posted by: The Maskless Ranger at August 20, 2021 06:34 PM (hQVBP) 169

It was cool. I'd been wanting to do 100 pushups during covid lockdown but severe alchoholism seemed the more reasonable goal. Delurking for a quick report on the push-ups thing. Do it. Back in the day I for what ever reason decided I was going to go the the Buffalo Rose Halloween party as a gladiator. The only problem was my nerd IT body. It was June at the time. So I got the Perfect Push-up system. They are just some spin things with handles and a 3 rep guide on how to do them. Regular push-ups, push-ups with your hands close together and then push-ups with your hands separated at elbows length. The first time I tried it I could only do five. That became ten, then 20, 30, 50 100, 150 and more. It developed and defined muscles I didn't even know I had. Front and back. Took 2nd place in the Halloween competition on the big stage that night. Thought I had it but the other guy was in an electric chair costume and lit off some pyrotechnics at the last minute and faked his death. Oh well. It still worked out pretty well for me. My girlfriend at the time didn't know what I was doing because I wanted it to be a big reveal. We are married now. Good times.

******** Yeah going through the same, like a hooker that doesnt want to leave even after you paid her. What Im learning is that in these instances the body has to be shocked into weight loss again, usually with a long term fast (3 days) or intermittent fasting, folllowed by normal eating. If you do consistent calorie reduction every day the body learns to adjust to that and makes it harder to lose, so the shocking it with random unexpected fasts makes sense to me. Maybe a reasonable goal would be 100 push-ups per day by the end of a month. The 100 push-ups per day is the goal, not the starting point.
My mom went thru a week of in house rehab after nearly dying from being in such poor shape. And her attitude changed after nearly dying. Before her first rehab day, they asked her for a self set goal. Walk 100 feet in a day, she said. She did 240 feet (with a walker) the first day. She continues to exercise daily, and she is now fully mobile. No walker, either. It just takes will and effort. I'm very proud of her. No walker, either. It just takes will and effort. I'm very proud of her. ... What's also helpful is setting a very reasonable goal, like she did. one of the greatest motivators when you don't want to do something is just to agree to do a small amount of it. Most of the time, once you get over the hump of putting on your sneakers, etc., you wind up doing a full workout. But just making that deal with yourself to only do a little helps get you to start. Navy bubbleheads back in my day had to qualify by ascending 100 feet in the tower to be rated for sub duty. Frogmen used to follow you up to make sure that you exhaled all the way up to keep your lungs from bursting. If you didn't they would punch you in the stomach.

(She'd been working out with weights for nearly 15 years at that point.) I have an odd kind of gainzzz to share, which needs background. I hope you don't mind. My husband three major health issues, and last summer I was majorly depressed about how my own life has narrowed as a result. So I committed to a workshop to write six (6) books in a year. I didn't tell anybody but my twin brother. My start date was August 15, 2020. I got up at 4:30 and worked until my husband awoke, seven days a week.
Last Friday, August 13, 2021, I submitted the sixth book. I actually wrote a seventh, to my own amazement. I added it up: 622,000 words in a year. I can't believe I wrote that sentence. Still haven't told anybody but the guy running the workshop and my twin brother . . . and you guys, who are a big part of my day, though I rarely post. If you ever watched the series Alone, a survival competition, you would see the main focus of the contestants is to find protein . Those that fail usually have to be pulled out.

Get the R4, it is big enough that 2 people can use it at same time. @257 Widespread Pepe-I'm right there with you, in fact I made myself take a rest day today. If there was a competition for overtraining whether it be bicycling or weightlifting I could probably compete for the world championship. I set different goals for this part and that and if I start seeing results well my logic dictates DO IT MOAR!!! It is hard to pump the brakes sometimes.

Widespread Pepe--you mentioned combatting xenoestrogens in a previous GainZZZZ thread but not how you planned to do that.
Strikes me as a serious problem since they're (apparently) everywhere. Posted by: moviegique It's a constant battle. I deal with them well the last 5 years and constantly learning more. They are everywhere. If you stick with red meat and eggs and butter you will be fine. Reverse Osmosis filter for water to filter out 99.99% of trash and chemicals. Drink out of mason jars. No processed foods. Cook for yourself. Raw milk if you drink milk. No seed oils. Don't drink beer with hops. Don't store food in plastic and if you have to wait for it to cool off. If you girl takes birth control don't sleep next to her because your skin will absorb the birth control she sweats out (no I'm not kidding). Micro-plastics, birth control leaking from women into you and into the water, and soy and seed oils are the worst. Hormones in milk and hops in beer are bad as well. I'm obsessive about it to the point my estrogen is so low that my doctor is convinced I'm taking something to keep it low. Posted by: Widespread Pepe at August 20, 2021 07:14 PM (Jz+Gi) 325

No food of the gods, you say? But, no, it's not a matter of "food that makes you immortal", its that all food hastens your mortality. I think it's in the Veda or the Upanishads where there's a complaint about things having gone to hell--people were so badly off, they were even =eating=. Heh. You mean emphasize those or exclude everything else? ||Reverse Osmosis filter for water to filter out 99.99% of trash and chemicals.|| Yeah, that's tops on my list. I'm good on the rest of it, too, except the milk. (I don't drink a lot but it's nigh impossible to get raw milk here.) ||my doctor is convinced I'm taking something to keep it low.|| Well, that's promising at least. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to locate and eliminate all the sources. Posted by: moviegique at August 20, 2021 07:19 PM (dhFCT) 330

Posted by: JROD at August 20, 2021 07:11 PM Yes it is. It's a cure and a blessing. I have to have somebody to watch me to make sure I don't injure myself and if I do injure myself to pull me aside and say "you're good". I have to be told. More Plates More Dates went super-low in estrogen due to androgenizing pills. Watch it -- men need estrogen too. Without estrogen, your sex drive will end. I'm not sure if it's just that you don't want sex, or you don't want sex AND you also cannot achieve an erection. Anyway, there is a minimum amount of estrogen a man needs. Posted by: moviegique at August 20, 2021 07:15 PM (dhFCT) You have not a single bit of knowledge of how long your going to live. There might be a small defect in your heart, a weak artery in your brain, or a bit of dna that is just waiting to be turned on to ruin your plans for a long life. And that's not even considering all the things external to you that can kill you. Posted by: Justsayin' at August 20, 2021 07:26 PM (Fs5vw) 333

Yeah. I'm obsessive and like sticking to the same thing so I live off of Grass fed red meat, eggs, butter, and Whey Protein. And cheese. Cheese doesn't hurt me. Buy everything fresh. Cook your own food. Stay away from plastic packaging, storing food in plastic (if you can), and drinking from plastics. No seed oils. Reverse Osmosis Filter down to the Fluoride level of chemicals to eliminate the birth control chemicals in the water as much as possible. And don't jerk off. Seriously, that fucks up your T-Levels. If you are married or have a girl, let her handle that job for you. If you don't, after about 30 days you're drive will send you looking for one and they will pick up on the vibes (in a good way). Healthy sex life is important for men and women. Posted by: Widespread Pepe at August 20, 2021 07:32 PM (Jz+Gi) 334
