Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The ONT That Built AmericaEvening Horde! Remember last week when I said I was a bit under the weather? Good news! It wasn't the 'Rona. I just got my test results back, and as you can plainly see, I tested negative for COVID-19! Yippie! The ONT That Built America Has anyone been watching the “XXX that built America” series on History channel? There are a whole bunch of them, The Food That Built America, The Cars That Built America, The Titans Who Built America, The Machines That Built America, etc. They're really good! Each series focuses on telling the story of that particular thing. For example, “Cars” is a three episode look at the history of automobiles in America. It starts with William Durant buying up car companies to establish GM, Henry Ford's struggles to come up with the Model T, and so forth. I'm amazed at the cast of brilliant characters interwoven throughout the story. Durant founded GM, got bounced out by the board when he spent too much money, so he went on and established a new company with a Swiss(!) race car driver named Louis Chevrolet and managed to reacquire a majority stake in GM before being bounced for good in favor of Alfred Sloan who really launched GM to greatness. Meanwhile, Henry Ford was struggling to produce a car, any car, that people wanted to buy, until he partnered with two of the most brilliant engineers in Detroit, the Dodge brothers. We all know the story of the Model T. Meanwhile, Walter Chrysler, who had been running Buick for GM, quit when Durant reacquired the company, but was persuaded to stay when Durant personally offered him a $250K/month (in 2020 dollars) salary, along with millions in stocks and bonuses. Several years later he quit for good and went on to establish Chrysler Corporation, which was soon rivaled Ford and GM in size. He purchased Dodge Brothers in 1928, renaming it Dodge. Dodge Brothers had been founded by guess who? when they had a falling out with Henry Ford and left Ford Motor Company. All of the men, their lives and careers interwoven, their drive and ambition unparalleled, creating by their talent and sheer will the American century. It's utterly fascinating. They other series are just as well done. “Food” focuses each episode on rivalries between men and companies who created various segments of the modern food industry. Coke vs Pepsi (did you know Coke had not 1 but 2 opportunities to buy out Pepsi when it was struggling?), McDonalds/Burger King, Campbells Soup/ Heinz, the list goes on. So, anyone else watching these? I love them, they're great shows. Speaking of the ONT that built America, tonight is my 5 year anniversary, more or less, of doing these things. 5 years ago today Maetenloch stepped down from his ONT duties. From The Model T to... Flying car completes 100km flight between cities Video at the link. The thing looks like a fat Lambo with folding wings and a retractable tail, but it works, and if you don't think that's cool, brother you don't know the meaning of the word. A Smart Military Blog The thing I like best about this list is that it gets #1 exactly right, which makes sense since the guy is a naval aviator. I might quibble and put the Hurricane in place of the Spitfire, which can be justified because one of the main metrics for the list seems to be how effective the plane was at doing its job in its time period, but who do you bump if you move the Spit down? I think I'd make the list “20 greatest” instead of 18, stick the Spit in a couple of spots below the Hurricane and add the one more aircraft. If we do that, what plane gets to be the 20th? My vote is for the Me 262. There aren't many planes that can be said to “change everything”, but the Schwalbe is one that did. What plane gets your vote for number 20? Sticking With The Theme Since we seem to be on a transportation theme tonight, how about the Rolligon? Looks Like You Blew A Seal. No, That's Just Ice Cream 50 Times Car Mechanics Took Pics Of What They Were Dealing With So Others Would Believe Them I've changed my mind about flying cars being cool. A-10 Pride Portrait of a Warrior Many Americans — especially among the religion-free and the well-educated — think life is supposed to be pain-free. Then the big cattle gate ahead was locked, so we turned around. You are a great navigator compared to my friend. Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at August 05, 2021 09:17 PM (u82oZ) 41

On the fighter list, I think I'd drop the F4F and even the Fokker Triplane. If the F4F made the list, why not the Hurricane? The SE5a might be a good addition. Instead of the Triplane, consider the Albatross, the Fokker D7, or Spad XIII. I think that the Yak-9 might be more important than the P-38, at least in the very competitive European theatre.
There is one aircraft that cannot be on the list (it wasn't a pure fighter) but it would in my opinion top the list of best all round combat aircraft of all time. This is a plane that was a day fighter, night fighter, pathfinder, long range bomber, tank killer, reconnaissance aircraft, and maritime strike aircraft. It flew missions at 40,000 ft and 10 ft. This is a plane that the Luftwaffe awarded 2 kills for one plane being shot down. They admired and feared it so much that they tried (unsuccessfully) to clone it and their prototype was even given the same name! On top of that, it was absolutely beautiful. Of course, I'm talking about the de Havilland DH98 Mosquito. Posted by: MichiCanuck at August 05, 2021 09:40 PM (7xbqe) 130

As to the question "Can Congress pass a law not allowing rent?" I'd say they can... if they also allow a landlord to continue to throw out people. They could foreclose a use of the property, but they couldn't take the property in the sense of requiring you to let people stay there for free. You want people there, they stay free.... but you don't have to have people there. That might be legal. Or at least an argument could be made, like Congress saying you cannot store chemical waste on your property is ok.

Yeah, once the internet came along, TV died for me. I watched some .. not much.
So I didn't really know who Donald Trump was, I knew of him, a little bit, I knew he was a wealthy New York real estate guy, had a TV show for a while, where he would fire contestants. I knew that from commercials, I never saw the show. Anyhoo that's the backdrop, in 2016 everybody I had to wonder if maybe this guy was running interference for the Clintons. "Oh that's just great .." But he was saying some good things. Some of the entertainers were trying to make jokes about him. I figured though, if he was for real, the usual suspects would start screeching like wounded eagles. And I was right, it wasn't a week or so and they all went to DEFCON 1; and any worries about him being a spoiler were laid to rest. He was, and remains, the Real Deal. Re the fighter discussion: that's always an interesting thing to think about. Say you have this many wildly expensive planes like F-22s, going against the same amount of money spent on F-86s, and the goal of the F-22s is to stop the F-86s from getting through, any of them, as an F-86 can carry a nuke. I bet the 86s would win. Now up the 86 to something like an F-5. I wonder if in an actual war you would be better off with more of the cheaper planes...

I'm not saying there's a good reason for the money spent on the F-22 or F-35. Being that we're a completely neutered client state of china and all. But modern systems have specific niche roles in countering certain threats and old tech isn't one of them. We've gone down the path of specialization. Here's a very good piece I just saw at Denninger's forum:
https://tinyurl.com/375f2va6 They look at the latest Israeli data, and break it down by date of vaccination. For those vaccinated in Feb, efficacy against infection and symptomatic infection is down to 16%, with the 95% confidence interval down to zero. The good news, is that efficacy against severe disease while declining is still holding at 80%+ (as of 7/17). But if that continues to hold, the viral mutation evasion caused by the very leaky nature will quickly overwhelm that. Note that boosters give you diminishing returns quickly. Note the main, big point. Because these vaccines are obviously not sterilizing, there is no scientific justification for mandating vaccination. It does nothing for the "collective". As for Gav, nobody likes him. Nobody liked Gray Davis either, but Davis was gray. Boring. If Gray Davis went to French Laundry, they'd think he was wait staff. People hate Newsom because he is the epitome of privilege and wealth, both of which he flaunts like it gets him off. On top of that, CA has real problems he's doing nothing about or making worse. Not that he's going to lose, but no one will be sad to see him go. Posted by: SFGoth (KAi1n/FKWJm) at August 05, 2021 11:28 PM (FKWJm) 359

So the easy fix for this is: BIPOC and "allies" are exempt, everyone else must comply or face restrictions. Just like with looting, election fraud, and saying "the N word" -- to name but a few things that are de facto conditional upon ethnicity and political leaning. I hate that it's true, but that's what will happen. White people and people not in The Club, get your shots or else. Just reading about the "Resistance" in France. As of Aug 1: 6 month automatic prison sentence if you enter just about any public place without your vax pass. Business owners will be fined 25K euro and get a 1 yr prison sentence for not enforcing the mandates. This includes grocery stores. If you ain't vaxxed, you can't buy groceries. Technically this applies only to "large" such stores. You can still get delivery, but guess what, there's nobody to deliver. Low paid employees are quitting in droves, now. Yep, my gun dealer lives way out in the woods. His store/shop in is a building next to his house. You have to go down a long driveway. A *long driveway* to get there. And it's surrounded by thick woods. He knows if you're a-comin' down that driveway. I can assure you that if he doesn't want you comin' down that driveway, you won't get very far. When driving down that long driveway, you get a sense you are in a kill zone. An I guarantee you, it would be if he wanted it to be. You are completely blind going in for several hundred yards. His buildings are off to the side, and you can't see 'em when you start down the drive. If you were not wanted, say in face colander times, I'm sure if you started down that driveway, some .50 armor piercing would destroy the engine of your vehicle. And that would likely be the last conscious thought you had. Knowing him (he's a machinist too, btw) he might have some even heavier hardware to unleash. But he wouldn't breathe a word about such. Was watching a youtube video last night. 60,000 Martians fled their planet to come to the Antartic because of a war. No, really. Btw, a top Nazi general also fled to Mars. There apparently is a massive population above ground there. It was a serious video that had lots of "Evidence" but it gave me some good laughs.
Of course the face on mars was a big deal in the video. Just made me wonder why people want to believe all of it. It was obviously bullshit and not even close to believable. Posted by: Brian at August 06, 2021 01:52 AM (DE7Lc) 448

The French and Americans have been butting heads since day one. Sure the French helped us in the Revolution, and that has been well documented. But President Washington switched his alignment/or global focus to the Brits soon after that. I am sure the French were pissed about that one.
I read long ago that the main reason the French and Americans always go at it is they are two of the only countries that truly believe they are the model for everyone else. That does explain a lot when you get down to it. The problem for the French is is they failed so much at backing that one up. I give them this much credit, they certainly punch above their weight. Posted by: My Life is Insanity at August 06, 2021 02:51 AM (tSR17) it is pretty good. I liked the first half the best but real connoisseurs prefer the second half. Most of the actors are true lefties. It is hard to get away from that one because it is so rampant. Mandy Pataimkin is left at they come. Carly Elwes is a lib too and outspoken. The second guy bothers me because he was great in Glory. He is so much the better actor. Lefty actors, lefty director Rob Reiner. Cant get much more left than him! Posted by: My Life is Insanity at August 06, 2021 03:02 AM (tSR17) but it is a good movie. The funny thing is the famous Rush statement that Hollywood is politics for dumb people, and politics is Hollywood for ugly people. I saw a good argument online not long about about why everyone in Hollyweird is is Leftist. I think it was on Joe Rogan but I will check on that. The main argument is they want to go along to get along, and the people that decide if they get jobs are lefties. The actors mostly don't care, so of course they are going to go along to get along. This morning at 2:30 the phone rang and then stopped. l It was a call from a dear older friend of mine who is in assisted living and has dementia and sometimes doesn't remember he's called. He must have realized it was really early in the morning and hung up before I answered He's at the stage of his illness where sometimes he's really sharp and other times he's angry and argumentative or confused.

I gave up on masks a long time ago. I am done, and i think a lot of people are done. But I know I am done. Posted by: Quint at August 06, 2021 04:34 AM (a8b7P) 538
So yesterday I went with my family to a nice local place for breakfast. There was a very cute girl maybe in her early 20s there in a tight red shirt and a shor-tish black skirt and she was wearing impossibly high high clunky heels. She also had on a pentagram in a necklace and a hairband that had little horns. I couldn't figure out if this was a fun "dress up" thing for her, (But why would you do that at 9:30 in the morning in a coffee shop when it isn't Halloween?) or if she were really a witch or a Satanist. I didn't ask her. I didn't have a conversation with her, but if she thinks being a Satanist is a funny, cutesy thumb in the nose to religious types she isn't aware of the fact that most of the culture is completely degraded and she'd be more transgressive if she were Amish or Orthodox Jewish and wearing a long dress.

Good morning to the confluence of early risers and late niters. My hat is off and my prayers are offered to our caregivers in this group. It's thankless and devouring.

I'm sorry; I'm not quite coherent yet. Reasons for what? Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 06, 2021 04:38 AM (k39e/) people always have reasons not to help out a sick elder or someone caring for them. They might be good reasons, but there are always reasons. That was what I was talking about. When someone decides to take care of another, it is a major commitment. It is not for everyone and I would never prescribe it. But you mentioned spelling someone, giving them a break. That is a very good idea and the least people who care should do. at this point I would love a carafe of Croatian wine. I used to buy a lot of wine from the Balkans. There was a pomegranete wine from Bulgaria that was a nice change of pace.

I assumed it was also intended to get attention so that religious types-Christian or Jewish- could come and harangue her and then she could laugh at them or be offended. I frustrated her plans. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 06, 2021 04:52 AM (k39e/) 553

There was another cute girl there wearing a long dress in a green and brown checked plaid without sleeves and shaped across her breasts but no cleavage showing. It was rather elegant. She could wear that because she was young and cute and fit and I told her how nice she looked. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 06, 2021 05:05 AM (k39e/) 559
