  • Thunderbolt 5 is trinary. (AnandTech)

Rather than using just two voltage levels - 0 and 1 - it uses -1, 0, and 1, and then composes two trinary digits into three bits, with the sequence 00 being unused and treated as an error.

This isn't the first time it's been done, but the more common approach these days is what is called PAM-4, using four levels which maps easily to two bits. PCIe 6.0 - coming soon at least to the server market - uses PAM-4.

Thunderbolt 5, when it ships, will deliver speeds up to 80Gbps bidirectionally. The length and price of the cable that will support that speed is not mentioned, but you can expect it to be short and expensive.

  • Google scrapped Google Reader, and that was bad. (The Ringer)

Now you don't need to read the article, which is insufferable.

  • How to get admin access on any Windows machine where you have a login. (Bleeping Computer)

Yes, it's yet another print server problem.

  • There are two big red things in the asteroid belt. (New York Times)

They're named 203 Pompeja and 269 Justitia, and they're not supposed to be there. Or they're supposed to be there, but they're not supposed to be that colour. One of those.

  • There will be a new Mac Mini by November.... 2022. (9to5Mac)

    Well, that's exciting.

I'm probably going to end up with some kind of Mac to do support for work. It won't be my main system, but when there's a Mac-related issue I need a Mac so I can fix it, or at least see it. We run into a lot of problems with Safari, but we have an entire team of UI developers so I mostly don't have to get involved.

  • Paul Hansmeier, of the infamously infamous Prenda Law, will not be getting time off for good behaviour. (TorrentFreak)

Because, as it turns out, he has been continuing the schemes that earned him a 14 year prison sentence from prison.

19 "The Day the Good Internet Died"

I knew Google shills were insufferable but damn!

The day the hood Internet died is when Fakebook was "founded". It was actual an ARPA application funded by the Pentagon called Lifelog.

I still have a landline. I often put what I hope are inspiring, religious messages on it to discourage sales calls.
I only keep the cell phone in the room because I think I need to know if there's some emergency from a parishioner and my husband could sleep through a train coming through the room.

Did I mention that I hate cell phone? That's why the link in the side bar about cell phone addiction is so true.

23 You're a sweet person, FenelonSpoke. Bless you for truly caring for your parishoners!

We still have landline also. Cell # only goes to friends and family. For occasional emergency call-back use, I tell them it's a "message-only" number.

Don't get much spam on the cell, but landline is... problematic due to robocalls.

Cell service sux in my neighborhood. Don't know if boosters are worth the $. Could rely on wifi I guess. Maybe should just let them put a tower in my yard, lol. Don't they compensate you for that?

TikTok is for "sub-idiots". On a very old (but very good) scale now not used because we don't want to hurt feelings.

Moron: IQ 51 - 70
Imbecile: IQ 26 -60
Idiot: IQ 0 - 25.

So a "sub-moron" was anyone with an IQ of 50 or less. A "sub-idiot" is someone with a negative IQ.

TickTok is the province of sub-idiots.

Answer: No. Ppl at jerb are allowed the choice. This is what I was told.

Full disclosure: Woman who had to 'sign the papers' is mutual friend with woman who told me all this today. (Well, Sunday...) They go to gym together on weekends.

Anyway, will find out for myself next week sometime-- when I show up at jerb to clean out my locker.

It's a large facility, and *IF* I go back to wrk, will likely be shuffled into a different area and/or different shift, since I've been gone so long.

I ready an interesting analysis. How do they really know it is all the Dleta variant? that would require a lot more testing than the standard quick tests they are using now, very expensive and time consuming to detrmin which variant is infecting any one person. Does anybody believe hospitals and CDC are doing these untold thousands of tests? No of course not. They did a sample and are using, get this, models no doubt. Science!

146 Yeah, that printer server vulnerability is a big deal, you just have to install the printer and *disable Windows Defender*. I've never considered something to be a truly deep vulnerability if it can be defeated by simply running the OS as-is (Defender is on by default, and you should only turn it off if you have other defenses).

So, big and scary - as long as you're a dummy.
