9 I would have to see this in person. On the laptop, it looks like one of those 'primitive' paintings you used to see on the walls of pizza shops trying to evoke the feeling of the old country.

It's nice enough, looks peaceful and I would like to be there with a cup of tea and no-one around me. I just think it needs to be seen up front and personal.

110 OK, we're past a hundred comments.

For the folks who enjoyed the Briton Riviere painting in yesterday's art thread. I enjoy his work so much and did a little research on the artist. Came across a reference to a Strand Magazine article from 1896 and it's available as a PDF file. The interview is pleasant, informative and very Victorian, which is part of its appeal for me. It includes several black and white photos of his paintings, some sketches he worked from, some personal information (he was a celebrity) and what he likes and doesn't like about his works.

To get there, search for Briton Riviere Strand magazine which will bring up a site with the article.

I hope this works.

Also, there are sites that display a bunch of his paintings.

125 Today is the birthday of silent actress Vera Kholodnaya, the first real star of the Russian cinema.

https://tinyurl.com/249tm44v

Immensely popular in her day and with possibly 100 films to her credit, only five exist today.
She was born in Ukraine in 1893 and studied ballet before changing her mind and entering the movies, beginning with a small part in a 1914 version of Anna Karenina. From that point, her roles got larger and her career much more successful, with even the father of Method Acting, Konstantin Stanislavsky bowled over by her 1918 The Living Corpse.

https://tinyurl.com/yzbwywmf

She died during the Spanish Flu epidemic on February 16, 1919, though rumors abounded for years that she had been poisoned by one of her lovers, who believed her to be a Bolshevik spy. The 1976 film A Slave of Love, starring Elena Solovey, was based on her career.

196 1910? Mary Pickford, Mabel Normand, Florence Turner and Pearl White were some of the big movie stars of the day.

Pickford, of course, remainded a star into the early sound era before becoming an alcoholic recluse in her later years. She often said that, before she died, she wanted all her movies to be destroyed, because she never felt she made one that deserved to last. Fortunately, no-one obeyed her.

Normand's career went into decline around 1922, not only with rumors of wild parties and drug abuse, but because of the scandal following the unsolved murder of her close friend, director William Desmond Taylor.

Turner, leading lady with the Vitagraph studio, went bankrupt in 1916 after her production company collapsed. She found sporadic work in many forgotten silents and spent her days until her death in 1946 appearing as an uncredited extra in talkies.

White's greatest success was in the serial The Perils of Pauline. Moving to France in the 1920s, she amassed a fortune and lived in comfort until her death in 1938.

If you're interested in the Austro-Hungarian empire and / or the leadup to WWI, Frederic Morton has two wonderful books - A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888-1889, which is a look at the greats working in the city, such as Klimt, Bruckner and Freud, as well as the Crown Prince Rudolf and his suicide at Mayerling. One problem with the book is that Morton ignores Rudolf's obvious syphillis and increasingly erratic behavior to wonder if he might have prevented the War had he lived.

A sequel, Thunder at Twilight: Vienna 1913-1914, concerns itself with Franz Ferdinand and the Austrian General Staff's implacable insistence on going to war with the Serbs. As in Splendor, Morton wonders if Ferdinand (who, despite public perception, hated war) would also have been able to stop the War had he survived the assassination attempt.

And you would be correct, sir!

Before Gloria Swanson, the role had been offered to, of all people, Mae West, as it was first shopped around as a black comedy. But she told director Billy Wilder that, not only would she be writing all her own dialogue, "Miss West" would never portray a woman older than 40. Which, obviously, would have destroyed any sense of reality.

Pola Negri was next considered, but it was thought her Polish accent was too thick.

I have never seen that Wilder thought of Theda Bara for Norma Desmond, but even if he had, I doubt she would have done the role.

280 A story for the cat people: I purchased the famous TV-advertised "Flippety Fish" this weekend. Last night with it charged, I brought it out for the cats. Older cat found it fascinating as it twitched (and made noise!) on the floor, and he ended up seizing it in his front paws and nuzzling the fabric surface with his muzzle. (Don't ask me why. Cats are weird.)

The younger cat, the big black mini-panther who looks so fierce? Studied it but wouldn't go near it. When I flipped it over to him, he jumped back and stalked away.

Verdict at this point: Not sure it was worth $20. We'll see how both cats react with some catnip in the toy. Both are furry potheads.

290 Sen. Rubio's chilling warning: China has weaponized America's own 'corporate lust for profits'

China has long rivaled the United States as a top global economic power, but in a Wednesday Senate Intelligence hearing, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) made an important point, saying that China has weaponized America's own "corporate lust for profits" against the U.S., and the evidence is clear everywhere from the grocery store to Hollywood.

Rubio urged other Senators at the meeting to "wake up" and recognize corporate America's reliance on the Chinese Communist Party.

"U.S. corporations are so desperate to have access to the Chinese market that they'll lead costly boycotts in an American state that passes a law that they don't like. American companies have actually fired Americans who live in America for saying or writing something that China doesn't like," Rubio noted.

294 So. Last year there was a guy here convicted of child rape. They put him in a cell with the older brother of one of his victims. Child rapist chats up his cellmate (not knowing he was the brother) and talks about his deeds, how he filmed them, etc. Brother beats child rapist to death. He got sentenced yesterday, 25 years. They should have given him a medal.

Listening to hearing on 5 men charged with numerous crimes related to January 6. Judge McFadden presiding. Status hearing but a few are in pre-trial detention. Government just filed another motion explaining delay in full discovery for this case. As I reported last week...
McFadden was not happy in Hale hearing after DOJ admitted it won't fulfill full discovery obligation until early 2022 at the soonest. AUSA talking about plea offers to the defendants.
DOJ still working on a system to furnish all discovery. "Don't know how or when" it will be up.

316 China is no ally to the United State or its' corporate interests. In fact, China is reportedly stealing between 300 and 600 billion dollars a year of American technology and intellectual property.

"They hack into networks and they take it. They use venture capital funds to buy promising technology startups. They hide their ownership, by the way. They partner with universities on research and then they steal that research -- often research whose seed funding came from the U.S. taxpayer. They force American companies doing business in China to give the technology over to them," the senator explained.

366 "They hack into networks and they take it. They use venture capital funds to buy promising technology startups. They hide their ownership, by the way. They partner with universities on research and then they steal that research -- often research whose seed funding came from the U.S. taxpayer. They force American companies doing business in China to give the technology over to them," the senator explained.

He alleged that, "China is already carrying out the biggest illegal wealth transfer from one nation to another in the history of mankind," reiterating that this is not about the Chinese people, this is about the Chinese Communist Party.

Rubio said that the CCP has more control over what Americans say, hear, read and watch than any foreign government has had in our history. It's led to corporations turning a blind eye to major China human rights violations, like the Uyghur Muslim genocide.

376 The senator warned that if America does not wake up and address this problem now, America's children could inherit a country where freedom is a figment and "sanctimonious preachings of a genocidal communist tyranny" will be the only thing that Americans are allowed to hear or say about China.

The former Trump administration took steps to hold China accountable for its' predatory behavior on the world stage by renegotiating trade deals, imposing sanctions and barring telecommunications companies like Huawei, accused of malign activity.

Rubio is serious about the issue and on Wednesday, he introduced two bills that would to prevent U.S. banks from lending to projects controlled by the Chinese government and to otherwise pushback on CCP influence in America.

One has to wonder why we'd be funding projects (whatever they are, like GoF in bat flu) in communist China in the first place. Bad business practices like this lead to bad financial times here at home. Among other causes.
