Advertisers Complain About "Plummeting" Ratings of NBC's Olympics Coverage

It's German -- I'm saying Die Media, Die!

NBC Universal and its advertisers are becoming worried about the success of Olympic broadcasting as TV ratings plunge and star athletes struggle, Variety reported on Tuesday.
Low TV viewing numbers and early exits from star athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka have caused anxiety from Olympic advertisers, Variety reported.

Thank you, Simon Biles.

Despite beating competitors' nightly program views, the Olympics are "clearly not what NBC, our agency or our clients were looking for," an unnamed media buying executive told Variety.

Last week AdAge reported that the networks' ratings are so low that they're down to claiming that Nielsen is "undercounting" their viewers, and demanding that Nielsen's ratings "accreditization" be suspended.

I assume the "supsension of accreditization" would be for the purpose of telling advertisers they're not entitled to rebates or make-goods* for ratings lower than promised. Because the ratings are wrong for Vaguely-Stated Reasons.

From Ad Age:

Media trade body VAB is calling on the Media Rating Council to suspend accreditation for Nielsen's national TV ratings amid continued problems stemming from the data giant's COVID-19 workarounds.
MRC accreditation is what gives Nielsen TV ratings their legitimacy to be used as currency in billions of dollars worth of network TV deals.

A commenter wondered whether the actual advertisers paying millions of dollars for a guaranteed level of viewership would buy that excuse.

Apparently not!

Here's a nice Olympics story: An Iranian judo player defected to Mongolia after his coach told him to deliberately lose a match, because if he'd won, he'd have to go on to wrestle an Israeli.

Well, the Iranian defector won a rare silver medal for Mongolia.

He dedicated the medal to... Israel.

"Thank you to Israel for the good energy. This medal is dedicated also to Israel," Mollaei told an Israeli Sports Channel, according to the Washington Examiner. "I hope the Israelis are happy with this win."

That said, to hell with the Olympics and to hell with NBC and to hell with the whole stinking corrupt totalitarian media.

* Make-goods are "free" advertising slots offered to advertisers when the network fails to deliver the ratings they promised. Obviously this costs the network the money they could have gotten from selling those slots, so they'd very much like to be able to tell advertisers "Nielsen's numbers are wrong, everyone loves us!"

This is something a lot of people don't know about TV advertising. There's a viewership floor in a lot of those contracts. "Buy this ad slot target least "X" consumers based on our ratings." If you don't hit "X" - like, for example, if your viewership sinks by a third - the purchasers have recourse. They can demand that you deliver the eyeballs, and if that means running your ads more times at no charge, then so be it. It's sort of like an "in-kind" refund.

Years ago in a similar situation i remember what ever network it was actually broadcast things live in the middle of the night for those so inclined and then also broadcast them in prime time again.

But the biggest issue I think is that people like me, who were die heart sports fans and would watch any sports, have been totally turned off by woke politics. I wanted to watch sports to get away from life, not relive it. So they can go fuck themselves

It was always going to take years to develop because these contracts last for years. The players and broadcasters didn't feel the pinch personally of the falling ratings, so when they were told to shut up by outside forces they felt free to ignore them and double down.

Suddenly, that record breaking contract can't get extended at the same rate, much less at a higher rate, even though someone had a great season last year. Weird. It can't be the wokeness, because he'd been doing it for at least five years, since right after he signed his contract initially. No, it's gotta be something else.

Not at all. This will *not* be the outcome. What I think is a lot more likely is a wave of consolidation, down to maybe two or four networks (because three is an unstable number). They will follow the NYT/WaPo split (State/IC vs. Party/LE alignment). The ad rates will fall but not to zero, and the difference will be made up by the oligarchs who subsidize them. Total control of messaging is far more important than profitability.

We usually binge-watch series at my house. On a typical night, we might take in five or six episodes of one show. We MOW through seasons.

And when you do this - take in almost an entire season in the span of a week sometimes - you start to notice certain patterns across shows.

Our favorite game to play is "pinpoint when the ratings started to drop." The female actor outfits change. The language changes. Odd scenes like characters in their apartments in various stages of undress start to pepper in.

If you were watching one show a week like on broadcast, you'd probably never notice.

Right. Bad testing methodology can be overcome so long as it remains consistent. If it's consistent, you can still do an apples-to-apples comparison in that metric (in this case, the test positivity rate). The rate itself might no have bearing on reality (sick people) and you would need to find a way to adjust the figures - but you can do a time-based comparison within the data set reliably enough.

But you can get replacement medication - it depends on what Biles was using it for. ADD is a general diagnosis in today's world, too general in my opinion. If she was using amphetamines for that, then I would suggest she might have needed them to give her a concentration or performance edge. And that would be wrong. Especially if she was taking over 25MG a day.

If she has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, then there are other meds that work much like Adderall and are not going to be banned in Japan. It depends on the type of issues she was having as to what might work best, but there are alternatives to amphetamines. I hate that I know so much about this subject, no one should have to know this stuff.

Yep, we were very close with our daughter and Dressage. Olympic coaches said our daughter had a lot of Olympic potential, unfortunately we did not have the $500,000 horse to go with it. Thank God our daughter is practical (she got it from her mom) and backed off to focus on college. She still rides but has knee issues due to all the intense training she did when she was younger.

From what I can see, the Olympics tends to ruin the lives of a lot of the athletes. They intensively train and compete, and when that's over, they wander off without direction or purpose.

That's one of four reason's that have given

1) The IOC banned her routine (that was based on the male difficulty level) because it's risky for women and they didn't want other women attempting it and injuring themselves. Having to create a new routine from scratch in the time left would have been extremely difficult if not impossible.

2) Japan Olympic Cmte banned an ADHD drug that she is proscribed and she would not have been able to compete effectively.

3) Her first routine was poor and she didn't want to risk her legacy of near perfection

4) depression ranging from "not having fun" to the trauma of being a survivor of sexual abuse

I'm not sure which of those is true, or PR or merely speculation. I think some of her fans let sympathy over her sexual abuse cloud their judgement.
