That baseline is why CTH said two months ago to watch for the moment when the White House credits Trump with the vaccine, because that's the moment when: (1) the vaccine was going to be identified as dangerous; and/or (2) reports would show the vaccine did not work. Perov is a wonderful artist with his ability to show just what he wants: expressive, realistic figures and backgrounds, colors appropriate to the setting, and very individual characters. ("Sleeping Children" is especially effective.)
But this is a tough scene. Transporting water in a frozen Russia wouldn't be easy. The children are trying to help the struggling figure (father?) pushing in back but are too young to fully understand the effort and importance of the task. It's grim with the frost mist obscuring the distant background, the hint of a worn grave stone to the left of the children (probably a mile marker), icicles forming off the cart, and so forth. As well done as it is, the painting doesn't make me want to hang it anywhere. Posted by: JTB at July 30, 2021 08:50 AM (7EjX1) Posted by: Just a side note at July 30, 2021 08:50 AM (2DOZq) 116

> Looks like slave labor to me.
> "Apprentice workman" is a nice euphemism for child labor, likely indentured. Nah. These are serfs, not slaves or indentured servants. The difference between a serf and a slave is that a serf is legally considered a natural resource, part of the land, like fish, game, mineral rights, or timber. Buy the land, the serfs come with. That was slightly (but only slightly) better than being a slave, because you couldn't be sold away from your family. Indentured servants, on the other hand, had contracts with fixed lengths. Serfs were born into servitude and could never leave it (once in a great while the lord would emancipate an especially-favored serf, but it wasn't common). My first thought, but then again, this is Russia.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 30, 2021 08:50 AM (Q9lwr) ++++ It isn't unprecedented. My brother has a big Time Life coffee table book called "A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union." It was published in the late 70s, I think, and it is a photo book. All of it is "slice of life" stuff. It is phenomenally interesting. Most of the Western photography is what you would expect: competent shots that reflect the Soviet party line (neatly-arranged schoolchildren, orderly columns of factory workers, etc.). The Soviet photography was a bit different, and much of it was subtly subversive. Two pictures really stand out in my mind. One is of a little girl in a dress sliding down a slag heap. That picture is captioned something like, "A child playing outside." That one is obviously subversive. The other was a picture of a few shirtless young boys huddled around a big lamp. The caption describes it as something like, "Siberian youth receiving Vitamin D from sun lamps." The subversion there is more subtle, but extremely effective: this place can manufacture UV lamps, but not milk. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 30, 2021 08:58 AM (3p5uk) 145

Related: Summer 1993: I and a few other NASA engineers are at the main Russian space center outside Moscow. We are standing outside a test facility, and up the concrete-paved street comes a tractor hauling a sled that's a rusty piece of sheet steel. On the sled is a huge electric motor, resting on a pallet made of railroad ties. Road friction has been heating the steel sled for an unknown period, and while we're watching, the wood pallet bursts into flame. Some passing Russians get the attention of the tractor driver, who finally stops; much hilarity followed.
This is in the main Russian space center in the country. Soyuz spacecraft are built there. But no wheeled trailer is available to haul a big piece of equipment. No wonder we won the Cold War. Posted by: Gref at July 30, 2021 09:13 AM (AMIL/) Posted by: blaster at July 30, 2021 09:14 AM (mbFEM) 225

Anytime someone asks about a book on the Civil War, the Revolution, or the Founding Fathers, I always give that advice. Hell, the novel The Killer Angels was published in the early 70s. He had surgery to open up his cheast, expand his ribcage with titanium beams, all to give his heart more room to operate. He had a genetic abnormality that resulted in his chest having a deep concavity that pushed in on his heart. This was supposed to correct that. He had never been able to be very active and exert himself because of this problem.
That surgery may be over now but I believe there were complications resulting in a collapsed lung and his twitter stream looks like he's been losing a large amount of blood in just a few days. He had surgery to open up his cheast, expand his ribcage with titanium beams, all to give his heart more room to operate. He had a genetic abnormality that resulted in his chest having a deep concavity that pushed in on his heart. This was supposed to correct that.
****** Pectus excavatum, in spite of the common misconception that the heart is "compressed" by the inward position of the sternum actually does not really affect cardiac function all that much. The primary impact is on pulmonary function due to restricted range of motion of the ribs due to their abnormal angle of attachment to the sternum (think of each rib as a bucket handle that can ordinarily swing freely). The Nuss procedure involves inserting a pre-formed rod from side to side, passing between the heart and the breast bone, which when rotated into position forces the sternum forward, like pushing out a dent in your car's body. I'm not sure Crowder had the Nuss procedure, as it does not work as well in adults as compared to children and adolescents with more flexible skeletons. Collapsed lung is a known adverse effect of pectus surgeries of any type. Prognosis is usually good. Posted by: Muldoon at July 30, 2021 09:32 AM (Xwt96) 304

The nurse in his video said one of the heart strokes, I forget which, was delivering much less than nominal volume when he was standing upright.
******* I don't know any specifics of Crowder's case and I didn't listen to a video by a nurse, but I can say this. Cardiac function in this setting is based on a calculation of 'ejection fraction' (an estimation of what percentage of the blood in the left ventricle is pumped out with each heart beat). EF is calculated from echocardiographic measurements of the mid-chamber of the ventricle at full relaxation (end of diastole) and at full contraction (end of systole). The actual mathematical calculation of EF assumes a standard shape (modified cone or "bullet" shape) of the ventricle in order to estimate volume from the measured linear dimension. In pectus excavatum, the overall shape of the heart may be distorted due to the position of the sternum, and therefore the estimate of EF from an echocardiogram may be suspect. The heart is not suddenly squashed by the sternum. It has gradually evolved and adapted to the abnormal position. Posted by: Muldoon at July 30, 2021 09:53 AM (Xwt96) 413

At one point in his video the lady, and I could be wrong here she might be a dr. and not a nurse, she was telling him what to expect for recovery and then stopped and told everyone to turn the cameras off. She had started to say that he shouldn't expect "normal" I'm guessing based on what you say that the heart conformed to some state, that it will be better now, but you can't change that past history of the heart's lifetime morphology. Those are philosophical arguments, not economic or financial. It is more expensive to live in Zurich than Hanoi.
Posted by: runner at July 30, 2021 09:58 AM (V13WU) No it's literally an economic argument. We make nominal to real gdp conversions when we compare countries. When we talk about gdp growth we talk about real, not nominal. Industrial capacity is better compared by looking at goods produced in quality and quantity, not a simple addition of what the goods cost locally, because the law of one prices does not hold in reality. Nominal GDP is just an aggregation figure of costs. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy (z5Vrg) - The Republic is Already Dead at July 30, 2021 10:01 AM (z5Vrg) 450

Also... leaked CDC slide says Delta variant is as contagious as Ebola. Which is a blood borne disease...
That's from the "NICOTINE is more ADDICTIVE than HEROIN" line of thinking. Yeah....no Posted by: JoeF. at July 30, 2021 10:16 AM (mR6Gs) 520
If that is his situation he should have had the pectus surgery years ago.
If such surgery were interfered with partway through, would that be pectus interruptus? Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 30, 2021 10:16 AM (a3Q+t) 521

Posted by: Unrepentant Cynic at July 30, 2021 09:58 AM (8DRUP) Contagious as Ebola... which Obama refused to cease travel from countries with outbreaks and doing no quarantining of individuals that were actually exposed to it. Posted by: Buzzion at July 30, 2021 10:18 AM (OVSq4) 522
"There's a CDC link on the last thread that they haven't purged yet where the CDC clearly and unequivocally states that the vaccine will prevent you from getting Covid-19s."
Yah but I'm not going to waste my time on them. I spent 20 years under Ben Shapiro Idealism - the hope that if I just used logic and reason, I could change hearts and minds. Meanwhile (metaphorically) six Marxists were waiting for me in the parking lot with baseball bats and tire irons. Posted by: Turkish Magneto Wannabe at July 30, 2021 10:19 AM (49Exr) 523

What rot -- put a patent on it. How about it's as contagious as chickenpox which is not fatal IIRC. Posted by: Ziba at July 30, 2021 10:20 AM (S1hrL) 524

28 On top of the barrel - is that a tree or a feather duster?
Posted by: grammie winger Stick to stir it to keep the ice from freezing solid. The birds in the background? Like 'Shipwreck' they're ominous! This is what poverty looks like. No obese brats, wearing $200 sneakers sitting on their asses. The kids have to work or they'll die. The father's working even harder to provide for them as best he can. The figure in the back is carrying a bucket, having purchased some water.
The bumps in the road are so sleds & wagons can stop without rolling away. I doubt the dog is theirs, it's baring its teeth, a stray mongrel or from a nearby house. The light over the city is dawn breaking, these kids (and their Dad) have been working since long before sunrise. The bigger image clearly shows how skinny and pale the children are, and how hard the Dad is working too. The stick is also a 'dipper' to fill buckets people bring. The birds... ominous!
