Félix Armand Heullant - Contemplation
A Wee Bit of Nostalgia I started rereading All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot because Mrs. Muse and I are watching the first season of the new adaptation that came out last year. When I first heard about it, I knew I would not be interesting to find out that the Yorkshire of the 1930s was filled with semi-closeted homos, shrieking feminists, feral animal-rights activists, and rat bastard commie union thugs. But one of my Twitter peeps said no, it's not at all larded up with 'woke', give it a try, it's actually quite good, and he was right. It's actually a bit enhanced a bit (gain of function?) from the books, i.e. more time is spent fleshing out the secondary characters, and it mostly works. The writers are careful to keep everything well within the spirit of the original story instead of injecting glaringly incongruous characters and plot element, and we're happy with it after seeing 6 episodes. But I haven't read the books in 20 years, and of course they are a delight, and it's been fun revisiting the 'Herriotverse', if you could call it that. I could hear the Yorkshire accents of the farmers just by how he spelled out the words on the page. And it's gread bedtime reading because the chapter are short, maybe 5-10 pages at most, so there are many natural stopping points if you get too sleepy. The trouble is, they're like potato chips, i.e. hard to stop eating once you've started, so for the past few nights, I've stayed up later than I wanted. Fortunately, Mrs. Muse is a sound sleeper and I can leave the light on.

124 I've been reading Standing Before Hell's Gate by moron author William Alan Webb. I really enjoy this series. Set in what's left of America, some 50 years after the collapse. Leftover Americans, resurrected Americans, bands of terrorists and bandits, Native Americans, Chinese invaders, Muslims--all competing for scare resources and control of populations.Standing Before Hell's Gate is book 4 of Webb's 'Last Brigade' Series, book 1 of which is Standing the Final Watch. Both are available for $4.99. Or you can take the plunge and buy the entire 5-book series for $24.95. ___________
These are entertaining reads, and I can usually finish a couple of chapters before bed.

201 In addition to "The Typewriter Revolution", Richard Polt has edited several books of short stories on the use and value of manual typewriters. Each book has a theme, horror/suspense, post-technical world, etc. Each story is shown in the machine's typeface the writer used which, for me, makes the reading easier. And the writing is excellent. Varied but creative and well written. I've been hopping through the books and reading stories as the title appeals.Searching through Polt's books on Amazon, he's also written quite a lot about the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. He also seems to be fascinated with the writer Harry Stephen Keeler, whom he refers to as "America's comic Kafka" and several of his books are collections of the newsletters of the Harry Stephen Keeler society, which, I suppose, he founded. But of the books JTB mentioned, here's one, Dead Keys: Typewritten Tales of Terror and it's available in paperback only. It's Book 4 of the 'Cold Hard Type' series. Looking through the Amazon sample of this collection of horror stories, it's fun to see the vintage typeface and a pleasure to read. If you are curious about the author Harry Stephen Keeler, there are a number of his novels available on Kindle for $2.99, among them (ahem) The Ace of Spades Murder, which is book 2 of Keeler's 'Screwball Circus' mysteries, The Man with the Magic Eardrums and

The Herriot books were one of our family read-aloud series when I was a kid. There were five of us, and Mom read aloud to us in the evening a lot.*
We also had livestock, so could relate to a lot of the critter situations.
I think I'll put those on my re-read list. They are a delight.

I recently finished Elmore Leonard's book Pronto. It's the first of his works to feature Raylan Givens. The end of Pronto was adapted into the opening scene of the TV show Justified. Love Elmore Leonard.
Currently reading the 2nd book in the Fletch series from Gregory McDonald. Confess, Fletch is the title. There is a Confess, Fletch movie currently in the works. Jon Hamm will star as Fletch. Good read so far.

I've had my own reading momentum broken up last week. Hoping to finish Stanley G. Payne's Civil War in Europe 1905-1949 this week and then I'll pick up GK again.
This is the third book I've read by Payne, who focuses on Spain but also fascism (the actual thing, not the vague term for people the left doesn't like). He tends to write clearly and not at any great length, which is nice.

The backstory: the student parish sanctuary is rectangular and used to have the altar on a narrow end like a conventional church. Sometime later, they rotated it 90 degrees so it had a more "stadium seating" feel and everyone was closer to the altar. Behind the new altar they have liturgically-colored abstract wall hangings. Off to the side, almost as an afterthought, was a large crucifix sculpted by the same guy who did the Sparty statue (with the result that Jesus is quite buff).

They've now moved that crucifix to be squarely behind the altar and it utterly dominates the room. It is a very visible change and one that is reflected in the tone and content of the Masses as well. This used to be the archetypal liberal Catholic college parish, but that's no longer the case.

Very much so, and it seems to be happening elsewhere. We stopped in on our old parish about a year ago for Mass and the new priest (the one from when we were there had retired) and there was a similar change - the modern decorations were gone and replaced by more traditional ones. The altar had been reversed so the priest faced away from the congregation while preparing the Eucharist - almost Tridentine (but in English).
I was at a Mass "up north" three weeks ago and they included the St. Michael prayer at the conclusion of the Mass ("protect us in battle").

There is also a wonderful collection of art on display in the room at the back, including a wall sized mural of Bierstadt's Yosemite which was fully restored a few years ago. Worth a visit if in St. Johnsbury!

Reminds me of the comics series "Planetary." The lead character's goal in his adventures was to explore the world's secret history.
That's description really doesn't do justice to the series. It was a fantastic read, especially for long-term comics readers. For example, the main villains were based on the Fantastic Four.
Yes, the book included people with super-powers, but the lead character used his brain more than his power (heat subtraction -- he could freeze things).

Very much so. Our monthly diocesan magazine featured an article in June titled "Spiritual Warfare."
Every year the diocese sends out a liturgical calendar and it features a "saint of the month." October this year will honor Pope St. Pius V, who master-minded the Christian alliance that defeated the Turks at Lepanto. The anniversary of that battle is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, aka Our Lady of Victory. As the fleet massed, St. Pius ordered the Church as a whole to pray the rosary so God would grant victory.
The story goes that as the sun was setting on the day of the battle, St. Pius looked out of his window and his face lit up with joy. He ordered the bells rung in Rome and said a Mass of thanksgiving because the Christian fleet had won a glorious victory. And it had, hundreds of miles away and long before any (earthly) messagers could have arrived.

I was browsing at the book store the other day and it was really depressing. All the woke stuff everywhere, even military history. A few of the classics here and there, but most revisionist takes on how awful everything is. Oh, and the history section was dwarfed by the navel-gazing sexuality area. I can get that people are into odd things, but a hundred variations on "teh ghey is soo cool" is a bit much.
Anyhow, they did have lots of different editions of Meditations, which I thought was interesting.

Hated it to the point of just stopped reading it. It's possible the translation was really terrible (a bad translation of Madam Bovary almost ruined it for me until a friend gave me a much better one; like night and day) or I was in the wrong state of mind to enjoy it. It's after the Yalta conference and Churchill is in the position of "If only Comrade Stalin knew" sending worried telegrams to Stalin about how Molotov is breaking the agreements about the Poles, the Romanians, etc. without once considering that the only way Molotov would be doing such things was with Stalin's command. It's frustrating and infuriating, although Churchill does acknowledge at the time of writing the book that he and Roosevelt got badly rolled by Russia.

After reading, I was curious if Arendt's take was the consensus. A little poking around on the internet showed me that there is a contingent that disagrees with her. One other thing that I noticed: Eichmann was a "joiner" and found comfort in groups... I do think Arendt was right that Eichmann was not a particularly gifted person in any way. He was not psychotic (if the psychiatrists who examined him in Jerusalem before the trial are to be trust, and I think they are).

The first few episodes were quite funny and well done, but the show quickly degenerated into a celebration of teh ghey.
And yes, one of the cast members was busted for sex crimes and there were several suicides. A lot of Hollywood youth fare seems to be a recruitment mechanism for sexual predators and Glee seems to have been a prime example of it.

Very good point, Captain.... the Fauci's of the world can do (and have done!) much more damage than a lone, psycho serial killer. To me, the phrase "banality of evil" doesn't lessen the evil, but rather is a caution to us all that there are lot of people (most humans?) who can get caught up in evil without necessarily first pursuing it (if that makes sense)

It's interesting to watch the tone of those books shift as Churchill goes back in time and relieves the various events. The Gathering Storm is full of frustration as he recalls how the war could have been prevented.
Then we get the heroics of Their Finest Hour, and he's having a ball. ("This was a time when it was equally good to live or die.") The mood brightens as the war expands and The Grand Alliance comes into being. The Hinge of Fate turns and the "broad, sunlit uplands" await! Alas, it was not to be, and by the end of the final volume you can sense his disgust with how things turned out.

It makes sense, but I always thought "banality" meant the day to day evil activities that go under the radar, like filling out the forms for abortions or forced labor camps. The Fauci-type evil is not something he sort of got caught up in as a function of his job, he was a big fish, a big decision maker who deliberately worked with the CCP to alter viruses knowing that bio-warfare was a real possibility, and he believed a pandemic was worth the risk to achieve his research goals. This is true. I've worked in a government bureaucracy before, and the workers tend to be people who would not do well in a competitive environment.

Not much to add re: books. Still working my way through Gary Taubes' "The Case Against Sugar." However, we watched "The Man Who Invented Christmas" based on the book of the same name about Charles Dickens' quest to write "A Christmas Carol." It was a charming, funny film and refreshingly free of SJW nonsense and anachronistic casting or social commentary. Christopher Plummer was great, as always. Highly recommend.

However, he does note that WW II did share many elements of civil war, which are often more pitiless than conflicts between two states. He naturally does a deep dive in Spain, but his discussions of civil wars in Finland, Hungary and Russia are also very interesting. OM asked me to write a book on Russia, but Payne cites some books he says are good, so I will check them out before I go any further. I'm not quite finished, but it is a good, quick read.

It's written in the Malice style, which is either a good or a bad thing, depending on your bent. I think he tried his best to create a "personality" for Kim Jong Il, and I don't know how accurate that is, but apparently the "facts" presented are what the people of North Korea are taught, with Malice's subtle way of letting the reader know how horrible these things are, as he's reciting them in Kim's matter-of-fact, megalomaniacal way.

The thing is, he was correct. The problem is that there were so many of them.
The left can't win on its own terms, because it has no terms. Already they are turning on each other because only one hand can wield the Ring. Their policies are self-defeating, and by systematically smashing the various institutions they control, they're wrecking their own livelihoods. That's really stupid.
It's the classic good news/bad news paradox. The good news is are enemies are ignorant and self-absorbed, so they keep making bonehead mistakes. The bad news is that the consequences of those mistakes won't be limited to them and they're too stupid to stop.

Was reading "The Spanish Holocaust" last week but bailed on it a couple of hundred (of 500 or so) pages in. It read like the author had been trapped by trying to prove his title true and it read like an litanization of every bit of travesty that could be found. But when it got to "25 sheep were taken from a wealthy landowner", it was time to go.
However, and to be clear, I didn't doubt the author's veracity just his importance judgements. I'm going to give the same author's "The Spanish Civil War" a shot in the near future.

I've been going through my accumulation of manual typewriters to see which ones I prefer to use for hammering out essays on whatever topic grabs my attention. It has been a LOT of fun. At the moment, the favorite is an Underwood Rhythm Touch from 1950. It's a standard machine and weighs about 40 pounds. It shows some use over the last 71 years but functions as well as the day it came from the factory. The current runner up is an Olympia SM4 from the late 50s. It's a portable and only weighs about 20 pounds.
Researching the various models, their growing popularity and the history of manual typewriters has been enjoyable and eye opening. Given the skill needed to design, manufacture and assemble these mechanical marvels, the cost of one today would be many thousands of dollars. They weren't inexpensive in their day but the users could count on decades of trouble-free use. That 'built to last' attitude is part of their appeal.

Basically, yeah. And given the system he set up, their defenses were not able to respond with any sort of effectiveness, because they would have had to wait around for his direction.
They say Stalin may have poisoned Lenin near the end, and I kinda hope that's true. It's also speculated that Stalin was done in too, but I don't think there's much evidence of that. The guy was able to die peacefully, more or less, in his own bed.

I've noticed that my houses all end up with bookcases everywhere and comfortable reading areas with a chair and side table that holds a drink, a snack, a light, and a book. I begin to suspect that says something about my habits.

The virus, as most respiratory viruses are, is deadly to a very specific population. This virus was very infectious because it is a manipulated virus and was designed so and so it affected a very specific population very badly.
I work in construction and have an acquaintance pool of roughly 5000 people, if this virus was super deadly to a general population it would have severely impacted the construction industry.
It had zero effect on the construction industry which never shut down.
Again, this was all bullshit.

There's a real nice out-and-back hike from the trailhead at the top of Cordova Pass that goes out onto the shoulder of West Spanish Peak. If you are feeling jaunty you can continue on to the summit. Or make a shorter hike. Walsenburg to La Veta to Cuchara, turn left at the top of Cuchara and continue ~8-10 miles to top of Cordova Pass. Or you can get to it off I-25 at Aguilera.

Same here. Our County of 35,000 had 109 people they say died from covid giving us a covid death rate of 0.003%. We lose more people every year from the flu than that.

I like the Sangre de Cristo Mountains a lot. And went partway up Uncompahgre Mountain in the San Juans.
I have big lung issues after a fire in the Navy. Bad day at work. So less oxygen hits me hard.
Maybe just the approaches to East Spanish Peak for now. It is a prominent summit.

Large scale commercial projects in most locales required masks and other PPE, but being as masks don't do shit to protect against viral transmission in a general population, even if they did, the work force density and timelines for completion would render them substantially innefective.

You want your pay application approved and funded, you meet those milestones that have been established by you subcontractor contract.

Having grown up on the east slope I suspect that I have a different view of that particular dispute. The big thing on the Plains wss when one of the Denver suburbs bought a bunch of Weld county farms through intermediaries and took the water granted from their water rights. This means the farms shut down completely and destroyed a couple of small towns.

That's not surprising, as Nabokov was emphasizing the literal meaning of the original Russian over the artistry of the meter and rhyme, so there is little poetic movement in the translation.
