Larry Elder leading in recall poll in California

larrryelder.jpg

As noted here on Wednesday, the first effort to have Larry Elder disqualified from the ballot in the recall effort against Gavin Newsom has failed.

A California judge on Wednesday cleared the way for conservative talk radio host Larry Elder to join the field of candidates for an upcoming recall election that could remove Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom from office.

Elder scored a swift court victory in Sacramento, where he challenged a decision by state election officials to block him from the ballot.

Superior Court Judge Laurie M. Earl disagreed with a state decision that Elder failed to meet requirements to qualify to run in the election. Forty-two other candidates have been cleared to appear on the Sept. 14 recall ballot.

In a tweet, Elder wrote, "Victory! My next one will be on Sept. 14 at the ballot box."

"This isn't just a victory for me, but a victory for the people of California. And not just those who favor the recall and support me, but all voters, including many who will come to know me," he wrote.

It would take a miracle, but I would love it:

Residents moved to recall Newsom through a petition drive, largely of what they considered his mishandling of the state response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elder, who announced last week he was running, submitted his nomination paperwork and five years of tax returns on Friday, the candidate deadline for the Sept. 14 election.

But when the secretary of state's office released a list of candidates who had met the requirements to qualify for the ballot Saturday, Elder was not among them. The office told Elder's campaign that its candidate's tax returns were incomplete or improperly submitted. Filing tax returns is a new requirement of a law signed by Newsom in 2019.

This is an early poll:

Conservative radio host Larry Elder is leading the field of candidates running to remove California Gov. Gavin Newsom from office by way of a recall election scheduled to take place on Sept. 14, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The Inside California Politics and Emerson College poll found California voters favored Elder by 10 points when asked which of the recall candidates they planned to support.

Speaking with KRON-TV Wednesday evening, Elder said he announced his candidacy earlier this month, and has thus not been a candidate in the race to recall Newsom for long. Elder credited his public profile as a nationally syndicated radio host with his showing in the poll.

While 16 percent of poll respondents said they intended to vote for Elder, businessman John Cox and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer each received 6 percent of voter support in the poll. Earlier polls conducted in the spring before Elder announced his campaign found Cox and Faulconer, both Republicans, vying for the lead.

Reality television personality and Olympian Caitlyn Jenner garnered 4 percent of support from voters, as did state lawmaker Kevin Kiley. YouTube personality Kevin Paffrath polled at 2 percent, while an additional 8 percent of the polled voters said they intended to support another candidate. The remaining 53 percent of respondents said they weren't yet sure who they would support.

I have heard some interviews with John Cox, and I have read some brief blurbs on Caitlyn Jenner's positions. "Reality TV personality and Olympian". I'm pretty much in the dark about the other 40 candidates.

Though the poll showed Elder leading among the recall candidates by double digits, California voters first have to decide to remove Newsom from office before a decision can be made about who will replace him. . .

Elder didn't enter the race until July 12.

Incidentally, Democrats in Sacramento recently passed a bill to move the date of the recall election up, to give challengers less time to campaign.

California's Political Challenges and Larry Elder's History

No one should harbor any illusions that any single person could turn California around. The Democratic hegemony in Sacramento is remarkable, and often cruel, in a soap opera sort of way. And often stupid, especially now with CRT/"anti-racism" coming to the fore in political calculations. Larry Elder brings the facts, but I don't know that he has a lot of politicians backing him up. "The Identity Party". Heh.

It's not like Larry Elder himself is wildly optimistic. He seems to feel a sense of civic obligation:

Months ago, I was approached to run for governor by Dennis Prager because people asked him to ask me, they know how much I respect Dennis and how influential Dennis has been in my life and my career, and I said Dennis, thank you for that. But, hell no. I said, 'I think this state is ungovernable,'" he said. "The Democrats enjoy supermajorities in the Senate, supermajorities in the Assembly, so Republicans need not show up for work."

"I think this is a race between Gavin Newsom and me. I don't think about the other candidates," Elder told the Associated Press, adding, "I know it's a long shot."

But however it turns out, it is a way to get some ideas other than those being pushed by the Democrats out into the wild.

Larry Elder, the "Sage from South Central", was born and raised in Southern California. He had a high-powered education and worked at a top law firm before going into business for himself. He started dabbling in talk radio including, believe it or not, NPR. Dennis Prager pushed for his inclusion in the talk show lineup at KABC in Los Angeles, though Elder is more libertarian than Prager (aside from Elder's very strong stance against illegitimacy).

Elder's time on radio has not been free from controversy. He was targeted by a black group early on, which got several sponsors to withdraw from the program. He was defended by the ACLU (a different organization in those days) and by ABC (before the Disney takeover). The KABC defense included some effective radio and TV spots featuring Elder taking physical punches from his critics.

He has been off the air a couple of times since then. He eventually went national.
He was fired by KABC in 2014 and moved to Salem Broadcasting.

A couple of years after Larry Elder started in Los Angeles, in 1996, Reason did a pretty good interview with him. They called him "libertarian":

I've been accused of being a late convert to conservatism because it's "hot." It's a marketing edge in radio and as a black conservative, it's man bites dog. I went back and got some of my old high school papers, one of which was a book report on Booker T. Washington's Up From Slavery. This was in 1968. I set up the term paper by saying that my classmates refer to Booker T. Washington as an Uncle Tom but he was anything but. He used to talk about self help and not relying on government and hard work wins. That philosophy is the core of what I believe right now.

Any thoughts on his candidacy? What about the numerous other candidates?

What about Newsom?

Music

I have always loved the theme music for Larry Elder's radio program. This is it:

It's one ballot, two parts -- First, Y/N, recall Newsom. Then pick a candidate to replace him. The second part won't matter unless the first part is successful.

This is something of a truism - the UniParty controls the major cities in most states. Because the population in the cities votes somewhere between 132% to 186% for the UniParty they dominate a state's politics.

With this in mind, I think a proper strategy is for the non city parts of the country to secede as one giant block and then blockade those hell holes. I am pretty sure things that needs sorting out will get sorted out in short order.

114 Without having seen any recall yes/no polling, I'd still guess Newsom has a 75% or + more chance of surviving.

X factors that might make the improbable a reality: recalls are strange events, the electorate that actually shows up is not a normal one; school shut-downs (actually pulling out the rug, after in-person/normal sessions have been expected all summer by parents; other "pandemic" idiocy like re-instituting mask requirements, closing restaurants, etc. Taken together, and the timing if they happen WILL be perfect - between now and mid-September - these things could shape the electorate into an odd one that boots hairspray boy.

One sub-set of this is LA in particular. Largest metro in state. Public health director/freak numbskull is re-imposing all the pointless "mitigation" restrictions, now. Plus, the local DA (a Soros disaster) is being recalled, and is in hot water with both LE and other DAs, and has no friends or media protection, or not the usual kind. So LA could be a case where those unusual circumstances noted above come together to produce a voting electorate capable of booting Newsom.

Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at July 24, 2021 11:28 AM (OTzUX)

115 If Republicans are to have chance of recalling Newsom, the GOP candidate will need to be a non-politician universally recognized & popular celebrity with a very high Q score who can attract irregular/non-voters the way Arnold and Trump did:

Recall incumbent, or not. Yes/no. Incumbent needs 50% + 1 vote to survive that. Binary question.

Then, next, replacement candidates are listed. Winner of this "jungle" line-up wins - that is candidate with most votes. % doesn't matter, as long as it's more than the others.

143 And even though I don't live in NYC, this is the man I hope will win for NYC Governor-Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels. I think he's a legit candidate. Eric Adams is the AA former police officer or captain, but I don't trust Adams. He wants streets with names of former slaveholders to be renamed. I think he's a leftist but good at sounding different than awful DeBlasio:

That was a designed specifically to be a respectful and important symbol to indians of the area, with significant indian and cultural meaning:
"“With the redesign, my father made Mia’s Native American connections more specific," he wrote. “He changed the beadwork designs on her dress by adding floral motifs that are common in Ojibwe art. He added two points of wooded shoreline to the lake that had often been depicted in the image’s background. Yeah, I hear you. The Dems have long since strengthen their hold on Sacramento since that time. And the threshold for recall is less than 1.5M signatures in a state that has, what? Over 22 million registered voters? Nearly 90% of eligible voters are registered, mostly due to the Dems machine there to get their people to vote. Heat many moons ago, I attended a game at the old Municipal Stadium. Warm Spring evening turned into a cold winter night.

Dingy, dark old stadium, with black girders blocking one's view from some angles, at least half empty, with an outfield fence that blocked off greenery extending well beyond the current dimensions.

It was glorious. Then they tore that down and put up Jacob's Fake Olde Thyme Field. MLB has been systematically ruining itself for a few decades now.

222 As I noted above, recalls are not normal elections, and there are existing and potential X factors that could, conceivably, push the "recall" vote to 50%+1 (all that is needed). Limp tribal Dem turnout, "eff you!" turnout boosted by renewed C19 idiocy, teachers/school districts tripling down on their brazen abandonment of their jobs, things like the LA DA recall increasing turnout of the disenchanted there.

229 Yeah, I hear you. Of that huge percentage of registered voters, an astounding 65% are democrats and only 24% are Republicans...

I don't see Newsome going anywhere...

Sacramento isn't voting. And again, the vote is structured that it favors turning him out, as he is not pitted against the replacements, but against a yes/no.

And Dems started the recall, it isn't a partisan issue no matter how Newsome tries to frame it that way.

Posted by: Brother Northernlurker just another guy at July 24, 2021 12:39 PM (cSyAR)

244 As Oldcat noted, there are various issues that *potentially* can lead to an anomalous recall result (= Newsom booted).

If only to deepen despair over the collapsed civic culture in CA, consider that Gray Davis was recalled over things that today would literally draw "huh, so?" from most voters in CA. Drivers' licenses for illegals. A rise in auto registration fees. An outrageous sweetheart deal for the state prison guards' union.

But the irritants today are much bigger. Both SF and LA are enduring crime, homelessness, and general decay trends unlike anything seen in modern times. If major school districts pull the rug out on return to normal schooling, which may well happen in the next few weeks, major and widespread anger among parents. Re-imposition of idiotic C19 measures (already happening in LA) might - might - trigger the response that is long over-due. LA district attorney recall will boost discontented turnout there.

Still unlikely Newsom is booted. But if he is, it won't be without predictable reasons.

248 Newsom is running two ads here, one touting the relief dollars he's dulling out and the other tying the recall effort to Trump. Both lame, but they're running a lot.

John Cox ran ads early and they were tone deaf and terrible. They addressed none of the issues. The lickdowns have really hurt small businesses, gas is approaching $5/gallon, we have limited, expensive power, limited water, and a water ration mandate that will be enforced as soon as the governor feels he can get away with it.

Elder, if he wants to win, should speak on the issues and speak to each region specifically. LA isn't SF and neither one is inland CA. My two cents.

Posted by: Grudge Harbor at July 24, 2021 12:42 PM (uhPTO)

249 Good point. Have seen so little TV, for so long, that I don't know if there is any TV advertising on the recall, of any kind. There certainly isn't any other visible kind, AFAIK. Billboards, mailings, door/door, tables/booths in public places. Nothing.

To me, this favors the recall cause. Recalls are not normal elections. Turnout is not normal, or easily predicted. They can be more like primaries, with a small-ish and very atypical turnout.

We'll see.

251 It will be interesting to see how the voters deal with Democrat governors who have exhibited a taste for tyranny over the past 18 months.

Recently retired Detroit police chief James Craig has announced that he's running for governor of Michigan as a Republican. It will be interesting to watch liberal whites explain how it helps African Americans to vote for the white woman and not the black man.

To be fair, though I respect Craig a lot because of how he handled the George Floyd demonstrations, he's not the only reason why Detroit was just about the only major U.S. city without any rioting or looting last year. While Craig made it clear that he wasn't going to tolerate rioting and continued to arrest protesters who got out of hand despite attempts to litigate there was another important factor in Detroit's relative calm in 2020.

Every adult in the Detroit area knows what happens when you burn your city down. It's taken more than 50 years since the riot of 1967 for there to be signs of actual new growth and development in Detroit.

315 Former President Donald Trump is more popular with U.S. voters than President Joe Biden and more people have an unfavorable view of Biden (48 percent) than Trump (46 percent).

However, former President Barrack Obama is more popular with voters than both Biden and Trump _Rasmussen poll released on Friday

317 Bullshit on Rasmussen. People now realize what a fuckup Obama was, Joe may be more popular than he is, Trump damn sure is.

319 This needs wide exposure: Julie Kelly interviewed on the War Room.

She describes the FBI "shock and awe" terror campaign (her words) against innocent Americans. The FBI is expanding their campaign from January 6 prisoners and is now investigating ordinary Americans for posting on social media.

320 I'm waiting for the woke crowd to say any game worn jerseys or other memorabilia with the word Indians or the likeness of Chief Wahoo must be burned. Old timers autographing balls must do so with a letter of apology to the offended. Also, the Cleveland front office said a lot of the reason behind the name change was George Floyd. Figure that one out.

321 Almost to Mom's place. Stopping for some real BBQ in Riesel, TX.

Just beware of the Riesel speed trap! The local PD likes to hang out behind the ridge heading north on Highway 6, unless they get bored pulling people over there and move to the other side of town to catch speeders heading south. It goes from 75 to 55 to 45 in about a block, and anything over 55 gets a ticket! Ask me how I know.

323 More pathetic negro worship, I'm sure this one is not like POS Colin Powell at all. What a bunch of cucks, this site is so conservative it's painful to read. Hard to believe anyone still takes this stupid garbage seriously.
