And that's mostly a cause of the 20th century I think. They narrowed the Thames so it flows faster in London now than it used to. It's why it pretty much never freezes now. Not from "global warming" but because of technological tampering.

123 Wonderful use of color to create the tranquil mood: deep greens of midsummer, medium earth tones, and dark blues without white indicating a gentle current Everything is oriented in the horizontal so slow movement is conveyed but no dynamism. I could feel my blood pressure slowing as I viewed the scene. Very effective and relaxing.

How I have always understood vaccines: Immunity is not how immunity is understood by most people.

Ok, think of your immune system as the 90 lb weakling in those old comic book ads, walking on the beach with a pretty gal. A bully comes up named Smallpox say, kicks his ass and takes his girl.

A vaccine is Charles Atlas. He gets the weakling in shape, so that when the bully shows up next time, he might throw a punch or two, but gets his ass kicked.

259 So, all a vaccine does is beef up your immune system to a specific disease (by training your body to create specific antibodies for that threat.)

Having a disease is also not how most people understand it. You can have the disease present in your system without having the disease (which is why it is insane that Chinese Lung AIDS is being treated this way.) If you have viral counts, but no symptoms, it means your body is effectively inhibiting/destroying the disease.

That is why asymptomatic spread can be a thing, but also why I think Chinese Lung AIDS is probably very weak tea- because there are so many asymptomatic people.

264 216. Yes. Flu vaccines every year. Given all the flus out there in any one year, an estimate is used to help you ward off the flu. With the reason being at least some influenza introduced into the body in low dose will cause the body to produce antibodies. Perhaps not a specific one on one match. But those antibodies will be activated if a flu is the introduced to the body.

Otherwise, given the myriad of flues in any one season, it would be impossible to pick a specific flu antibody to match year after year.

Two types are used: an inactivated poliovirus given by injectionand a weakened poliovirus given by mouth. The World Health Organization recommends all childrenbe fully vaccinated against polio.

While most scientists believed that effective vaccines could only be developed with live viruses, Salk developed a killed-virus vaccine by growing samples of the virus and then deactivating them by adding formaldehyde so that they could no longer reproduce. By injecting the benign strains into the bloodstream, the vaccine tricked the immune system into manufacturing protective antibodies without the need to introduce a weakened form of the virus into healthy patients.

There is a reason for that - to get you to the *right* human being (if done well; if done not-well, it dumps you into the correct automated loop that also sucks).

And you can have what you're talking about, by the way - but it costs. It costs a lot. I have a business internet line for my house because I need some business features and I want bandwidth prioritization. My internet bill is $150/month and it is only middling fast. But the support is *excellent.* When I call in, the system validates my account based on my phone number (or if on an alien phone, I have to enter my account number). Then I get a human within four rings and that person helps me with whatever or handles a hand-off very gracefully. It's expensive, but the support is actually *good.*

She has been reading the NY Slimes, of course, and insists that there have been more deaths, outside of accidents and murders and the like, and correcting for increased population, in 2020 than in 2019. 296 This is useful.

Otherwise, given the myriad of flues in any one season, it would be impossible to pick a specific flu antibody to match year after year.

what is really exciting is that viruses compete for turf (people) and one successful strain can block the others out. Of course if there is sufficient inoculation in the population to suppress that one, the OTHERS pop up.

I think that is the explanation for why year after year they have record inoculation rates for the flu and still have "bad years" and "we inoculated for the wrong strain" I think we should be moving to a treatment based model for respiratory diseases.

This is related to something I thought about back when it became clear that the professional epidemiologists were all in the tank and untrustworthy. We maybe shouldn't even have professional epidemiologists and their institutions. If a problem like this comes up, partner with insurance companies to lend out their best actuaries and let them do the statistical modeling. They actually tend to know what they're doing.

I'm so tired of all of this. Deaths are down all over from covid but according to NC news, 83% of new cases are the delta variant. And the delta variant is supposedly super duper awful. We shut down entire countries and economies for the past 16 months because original covid was so super duper deadly. So - were they lying then or they lying now? ( I know, I know. Maybe rather than meet head on, ask questions?

For instance, ask something like, "Does the data you're looking at included other health issues the person may have had?"

Sometimes, approach is everything. It doesn't always work, because orangemanbad, but, worth a try.

Cuz its never about what they are screaming. Its only about the scream itself. It is like a permission slip for them to vent their hysteria publicly, and an attempt to coerce others via peer pressure. Much of human behavior is a search for "feedback" of some kind. Most of that feedback is ultimately unsatisfying, and needs to be repeated again and again. Chasing diminishing returns of dopamine.

418 374 Jonas Salk should have won the Nobel Prize for medicine for that breakthrough. Unfortunately, his personality was so abrasive that he alienated everyone who could have vouched for him to get the prize anyway.

So you're saying exemplary achievement isn't necessarily the deciding factor when awarding prizes/awards for scientific endeavor?

Imagine that.
Posted by: Tonypete at July 21, 2021 09:52 AM (D44eV)

Definitely. I also think that there was a huge case of sour grapes within the establishment against him, to be fair. He really became a rock star because of the vaccine, and I can see professional jealousy among his colleagues fueling the reputation for his 'abrasive' personality.

Based on a somewhat hazy memory, I seem to recall that London experienced an excess of lung related deaths due to a confluence of fog and coal being used for heat. But, that was back in the early fifties, I believe.

430 Black Rifle Coffee made the same mistake as Chick Fil A.
They hired a marketing department to appeal to the left.

Problem is years later if you talk to a leftists about CFA all they talk about is it being "anti gay". The left never forgives and rarely excepts new information.

So BRC and CFA lose customer support from their base and gain nothing.

In the case of BRC it is going to be much worse as CFA has lots of low info normie fans. BRC was putting "scary" guns on its packaging so a far more conservative fan base.

434 So...in terms of deaths...the vax is the delta variant.
==
TBF, probably not. Once you see the real numbers on vacc injuries, the vacc is prolly worse than the delta variant, which spreads quickly, but doesn't seem to make people as sick overall. Delta is probably a good thing. It will induce herd immunity a lot faster than the shot. Since 1 the shot only improves your immunity by 1% in absolute risk terms. And 2, a lot of people wont ever take the shot.
