Van Gogh is like Mozart to me; lovely, but it's everywhere. It needs to be put away for a few decades until people can see it with fresh eyes again.
Of course, in a few decades, treasures such as this will either not exist, or a culture to appreciate them won't, so I suppose we may as well look at it now.

Saw "Black Widow" this weekend because the lively and surprising Mrs naturalfake surprisingly wanted to see it.
Basically, it's Marvel's version of a James Bond movie, specifically "Moonraker"(shares some plot points) which they tip at the beginning of the movie.
I'd say the movie is a success on that count and would rank as an upper midtier Bond flick - cuz there are a lot, a lot of iffy quality Bond flicks.
And yes, Marvel made a huge tactical and dramatic error putting out CM instead of this.
However....the best part of the movie was the "WTF? Oh, c'mon! Laughing at " audience reaction to the after credits scene.

But I like this. Van Gogh had a very interesting style and I always find myself intrigued by his colors, perspective and themes.
Plus he was crazy, so it makes his art even more interesting.

Granada TV did an adaptation of it, but because Jeremy Brett was so sick, he hardly makes any appearance in it at all, and Edward Hardwicke's Watson shoulders the burden of the case.
BTW, have I mentioned that Peter Cushing did a few Holmes adaptations in the 1970s? Typical low budget BBC and his Watson is in the blustery Nigel Bruce mode, but their versions of A Study in Scarlet and The Boscombe Valley Mystery have their own charm.

Japonisme: The European fad for all things Japanese. Artists especially went gaga over Japanese prints, which were really cheap in Europe. The Europeans liked the subject matter, composition and clash of patterns in the eastern works and replicated the styles a lot. Japonisme was a HUGE influence on late 19th century art. The Impressionists especially.

Absolutely. Watson was a doctor and an ex-soldier. He could not have been a complete dummy. And we saw that he learned observation and deductive techniques from Holmes. He wasn't usually right in his conclusions -- but remember, Holmes had been doing this his entire adult life, while Watson had only been attempting it for a few years.
On the other hand, any doctor worth his quinine should be good at observation.

My test of a good version of Sherlock Holmes is how Watson is portrayed. Holmes would NEVER tolerate a buffoonish Watson. Look at his attitude toward Lestrade. That's one reason I really enjoy the Downey/Holmes movies. Watson is intelligent and a full partner. And I really like how they play up Watson's exasperation with Holmes' eccentricities. They're fun, but faithful where they need to be.

True. Jude Law's Watson is a fair portrayal, because when Watson first meets Holmes, the former is just back from Afghanistan. In other words, he was a young man, not middle-aged as Watson is usually played. The adventures of A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four were very early in their partnership, and both were fairly young men. We should see that more often in adaptations.

Seriously, that was just the easiest little money maker. Every 18 months or so, return with another 3-4 little Sherlock adventures, running through the Doyle stories in modern form or creating new ones. Instead they decided that Sherlock needed to go epic and absurd.

Cumberbatch is a fine actor. He'd have made a good Holmes in some ways. However, the modern tendency is to portray Holmes as a near-sociopath, as having Asperger's, and so forth. In Doyle's stories he was not any of those things. Thus the series with Cumberbatch, and even worse the one with Lucy Liu (whom I love) as Dr. Watson with a modern Asperger-y Holmes, was annoying to me.

Not at all. They went absurdist way too soon, and unnecessarily so, but Cumberbatch is an excellent actor, and I liked his take on Sherlock. My favorite episode was A Scandal In Belgravia - I even liked the Irene Adler character, and how she matched up against Sherlock, as well as the Moriarty intro.

Elementary really doesn't get a lot of love with Holmes fans, especially in comparison with the BBC Sherlock series, but I liked it a lot; probably more as a series than the BBC one. Elementary's take on Moriarty is especially good, I thought.

I loved how in the Cumberbatch version they turned that into evidence of Watson having PTSD because he missed the excitement of frontline service because he couldn't 'decide' whether it was his leg or his shoulder that was paining him.

The series had a lot to recommend it. Costuming Brett in clothing appropriate for the season, for example; he wears a lightweight suit and a straw trilby in one episode instead of the ever-present tweed and deerstalker cap. And he's shown smoking cigarettes, which Holmes did in at least one Doyle story.
In one episode a client exclaims how brilliant Holmes is, and Brett, facing us, gives a tiny little smile as if pleased with himself before wiping it away and turning back to the client. Watson occasionally told us in the stories that Holmes disdained praise for his mental efforts, but secretly appreciated it. Nice touch.

Another good one. The actor for the doctor is fantastic. It's also infamous for having the only snake in existence that drinks milk and hears whistles. Check out the "Canary Trainer" in Adrian Conan Doyle's collection "The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes. It's a take on the Speckled Band, and A Lot creepier.

The movies in the US typically have went along with Nigel Bruce's portrayal of Watson as a dunce for comic relief rather than the author's characterization. In the books, Sherlock is at times unlikable. brusque, and rude. Watson is there in part to soften the edges of Holmes.
Others have mentioned some of the better episodes above. Americans at times have difficulties liking British portrayals of mysteries as they have more dialogue, less action, and often flawed characters that are unsympathetic. Their comedy is different as well.

Casting I think is fine. It's the direction that sucked. I stand by my view that in the first movie Abrams told them to all play over exaggerated versions of the original actors doing their roles. Except for Chris Pine. He didn't tell him to portray William Shatner playing Kirk. He told him to play Luke Skywalker.

Writing. The bigger problem with New Trek, I think, is the writing. It isn't smart or detailed and the stories depend on coincidences or universe-wrecking new things (transwarp beaming, for example). The recycled story lines (Kahn, in particular) doesn't work at all - that needs the older, wiser characters and not their young-and-ready, devil-may-care younger versions. It is big and loud and exciting and fun to look at, but it isn't really Trek in the traditional sense.

We have a fair number of local highway and roads departments to thank for the avoidance of the metric push. Many of them - with deliberate passive aggression - did direct conversion, using fractions and unusual numbers for speed limits. With the limited metric granularity on speedometers, it caused a lot of blowback - no one would know whether they were speeding.
Perfect, aggressive, vicious compliance helped make that effort die.

Original timeline the Botany Bay was found by the Enterprise and that's why he was stopped from taking over the ship after being unfrozen. New timeline, some other ship finds him and he does take over and the Enterprise has to stop them before they do something horrible like destroy a civilization or something. One movie right there with a Khan and not any stupid Wrath of Khan call backs.

That's interesting. I've come across, more than once, folks who say Julia seemed to be the only one having fun in that film. That he seemed to be in an entirely different movie from the rest of the cast. And as far as I can tell, his "for me, it was Tuesday" line is the only quotable line from that mess.

I wouldn't send my kid to Harvard now even if he could get in, and we could afford it. His background is Irish, German, Dutch and English. He certainly is not going to get a scholarship.

Yes; He was a man of great integrity and intelligence. I also find McCullough's writing style very accessible. Even my husband-who although a smart man-does not really read a lot of biographies-enjoyed the 1776 book by McCullough
I did however-make an error. The 1776 book is not specifically about Washington although obviously he features in it quite a bit. The was a biography of Washington was by someone else whose first name was David.

that is a good recommendation. The Adams bio was highly regarded when it came out. I think I read some of it but didn't go through the entire thing. On your recco I will try to find it and read it.
My favorite founding father by far was Washington. Douglas Southall Freeman did almost a day by day bio, almost his entire life day by day. There is a condensed version that is very good as well. I have a personal affinity for the bio by Flexner. This was written in the 70s when Founding Fathers were not so popular. "Of course it is all relative, most of those people would not recognize the nation today.
Flexner did four volumes as I recall. But his one volume bio of Washington is my favorite. My least favorite bio is anything by Ellis. It makes me sick people got to Ellis when then have Flexner and Freeman. It is what it is I suppose.
