ONT Question Of The Day
Last week I wrote about our Independence Day plans. Well, we followed them. We went to Weatherford, Tx for the festivities. Texas Clearwater Revival were pretty good, even if they didn't play Who'll Stop The Rain, and they played an upbeat version of Lodi, if you can imagine such a thing. Blue Öyster Cult put on a great show, they played from a bandstand in Heritage Park, which allowed people to get really, really close to the band. It's hard to believe that these guys have been doing this for as long as I've been alive. What was really strange was what happened early on in the concert. A couple of songs in, they're doing the usual in-between songs chatter, “this is from our latest album, this is an old favorite”, etc when Buck Dharma said “Oh, and a special shout out to Weird Dave”. Wait, what? Frankly, that was pretty damn cool, but I hadn't even known about the concert until last Friday, and the only place I talked about it was here, so the question of the day is: Does Blue Öyster Cult read the ONT? If so, thanks for the shout out guys, y'all rock! And the fireworks afterwards were great too. Fanfic So, what comes to mind when I say the word Fanfic? Badly written Mary Sue tales? Harry Potter slash? All those are part of it, I'm sure, but there are some stories written by people who have talent and simply love a particular subject. Those can be worth reading. Like this: The Metropolitan Man
It's the Superman story, but the author tries as hard as he can to imagine what it would be like if Superman had appeared in the real world in the 30s, as opposed to the comic book world that he inhabits. I suppose it's long enough to be considered a novella, if not a short novel, but it is really well written and I think the author does a really good job of sticking to the premise. It's worth a read if you are interested in that kind of stuff, and although I don't like the ending, it was completely consistent with the rest of the story. Worth your time. Skater Girlz Interlude

I initially thought that what they were talking about was shocks used in medical treatments, which sounds bad but may not be (I am not a doc, but I know there are some legitimate treatments involving electricity), but it turns out that no, these were used as punishment. Ohio Allows Doctors to Deny LGBTQ Health Care on Moral Grounds The bill does nothing of the sort. What it allows medical professionals to do is to refuse to participate in sex change procedures if they feel that, as a matter of conscience, such procedures are wrong. They can not refuse to treat an injured person because of their orientation, or to treat them for other health issues. But look how it's phrased: “ deny care to LGBTQ patients”. And further on in the article:
a medical provider could refuse to prescribe PrEP to an LGBTQ patient looking to reduce their risk of contracting HIV, or refuse to provide gender-affirming care to trans and nonbinary patients, or puberty blockers to transgender minors.“Gender-affirming care”. It's nothing of the sort. It's gender denial care, in fact it's mutilating a mentally ill person to legitimize their delusions instead of treating their mental illness. I'm sure 40% of the people who've had that surgery would agree with me, but we can't ask them because they are dead by their own hand. I think this is a tragedy of the highest order, but I guess I just care more about the actual lives and mental health of the people involved than LGBTQRSTUV%@Z activists do. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I read it for a while; it was fascinating. But once I got caught up, the delay between episodes got me out of the habit of reading it, and the site didn’t at the time (and may still not, for all I know) have an RSS feed for subscriptions.
I thought some of it was overdone—as I recall there’s a sort of assumption about how magic works that doesn’t have to be true. And it potentially was heading for a very dark conclusion, probably the magical equivalent of the atomic bomb. But it was definitely interesting. And as much a comment on Hollywood and modern entertainment tastes as a comment on rationality.

Hospital time was involved for both of them to watch for some of those side effects afterward. Some monkey with a teaching degree and a Die Hard battery should be on trial for torture for using it.

It does not "look" good, but perhaps this use of electroshock as behavior modification therapy is a last resort for dealing with intractably violent kids?
We all love dogs, but I don't think everybody here is opposed to to judicious use of shock collars to quell excessive barking, or to keep out pets on the property when used in conjunction with an "invisible fence".

It's not unique to election law, of course. The essence of a lawless system, outside anarchy or Somalia '93, is lack of good faith in execution of the laws. Soviet constitution and its comprehensive protection of civil rights, etc etc - words mean nothing by themselves.
And one of the most damning, revealing, and discouraging things since November is the clearly genuine lack of outrage or passion among almost any GOP elected types, at any level, but especially in the key states where it mattered. Dave in Fla has referred to reform efforts. OH and FL seem to have actually done it. I think odds of PA or MI doing it are de minimis. WI, not high. NV, zero, unless something changes.
So there is the dubious prospect of even nominal reform. On top of that, the problem you note of making sure such reform actually defines the future process.

As a teaching tool it has taught a lot of South Americans who thought liberty was important that they needed to be more circumspect as to how they criticized "their" government.

However i used it on "boost" (very high) once, only once, to prevent a dogfight. It worked! I was grateful i didn't have to apologize to the neighbor for my dog harming his. (Krieger is 100lb).
So they aredefinitely good tools when (humans) are properly trained :-)

I think women are just inherently more graceful than men. I know they say that on average women have a lower % of the brain involved with higher-level spatial representation, movement, and their perception of their place in that space. But I wonder if it's because they have a great deal more lower-level unconscious mechanisms that supplant unneeded higher-level functions. I have basically retarded spatial recognition so I'm no judge. I can literally get lost in a room with one door.

There was an amazing stories episode in the 80s about Vampires. Jason Robards. It involved fireflies (why sparkles reminded me.) It was really good from what I remember (I have not seen it since I was around 10, so YMMV.)

I've known two people who have had ECT. It did help them but it was in very controlled sessions. Administered by doctors, not some rando orderly or janitor. One had a single session and the other had to have multiple treatments. The main side/after effect was some memory loss. The dosages are very low, as is the amperage, obviously. I would be very unkind to the people who run that hellhole of a school.

Knew a guy who claimed that he had trouble with his assigned driver sneaking off for a smoke, so he gave him a "high-speed spec-ops" pager that was actually a dog training electric collar.
He claimed that the first time he triggered it off he could tell how far his driver went by the howl.
If you and I did that to a minor we would be reported to CSD and investigated. I don't think there should be special rules for institutions.

If a kid comes in and wants tranny treatments, they are essentially saying "I've self-diagnosed myself as a tranny and want tranny treatments".
But a doctor might disagree with your assessment and say "Tranny treatments won't cure you", which is actually medically proven to be true. They might say "Tranny treatments might actually harm you, and my oath is to first do no harm", which is also medically proven to be true.
But our litigious society wants to claim that refusal to administer the clients preferred treatment is a violation of their civil rights. Which is false. Otherwise I could go into the doctor and say "Doc, my penis length leaves me with feelings of inadequacy, which makes me consider harming myself. Therefor, schedule me a penis lengthening surgery."
I'm not sure how doctors are told they can refuse to give you Ivermectin or HCQ for COVID, but at the same time not refuse to give you tranny treatments. It's not intellectually consistent.

Judges Guild probably had both the best and the worst of old-school D&D adventures. They seem to have pretty much published anything sent to them, and their editing seems to have been approximately nil. Which meant some really unplayable stuff, and also some really amazing stuff that it is doubtful would have made it through TSR’s editing process, laughable as it was.

I think I recommended it here before, but the Dragonchoice series is Pern fanfic that is better than several of the actual books.
There is a Stargate fic called "Walked Right Out of the Machine" in which things go just a little differently and Jack gets stuck with that Tok'ra in his head. It is fantastically done.

Pathfinder went the same route too. There was an article posted here or maybe I stumbled to it from another post here where the son of THE MAN Gary Gygax is being canceled just because he stated that gamers might like a universe to play that wasn't a butthurt SJW minefield.
He and his group bought the rights to the TSR name and are making a new tabletop RPG universe. Well, Gen Con which was started by his dad has forbidden him from attending, the old TSR which was licensing its name from the son has now basically shit on him. People are calling both him and his dad a racist. All because of the little pushback from woke. Now they have family infighting, siblings fighting siblings, and all sorts of bad shit going down now.
This is how it will always be. They don't want an apology. They want to hear about you swinging from a rope, checkmark another down, and then go on to the next victim.

Yeah, that always bothered me about evolution. Random mutations consistently evolve organisms into higher and more complex forms? Even a non-engineer like me can grasp that the more complexity that is added into a system, the more opportunities for failure will arise. And the human body--the product of evolution--is about as complex a system as we are ever going to find in nature.

Haven't played DnD since I was in high school, mostly because I got kicked out of my group because I tended to come up with rather... creative solutions to problems. The last straw was when I was in a cave and was attacked by what I seem to remember as giant vampire bats, or something large, flying and swarming.
I had a jar of oil and a torch, so I smashed the jar and lit the whole cavern on fire to effect my escape. Pissed off EVERYONE, but they allowed it. Once.

There are some good ideas in there. The mechanics are interesting and novel (they fuck the implications up after coming up with a cool concept.) The aliens are actually quite good (they actually look good- which is hard to do these days with modern CGI in full lighting. Probably the best since Edge of Tomorrow.)

First, Buck Dharma (aka Donald Roeser, aka my favorite musician in the whole, wide world), BOC's lead guitarist and the one who wrote Reaper, Godzilla, and the music for Burnin' 4 U, is kinda conservative and was on one of Ace's podcasts awhile back. I dunno if he reads the blog, but he probly does and probly saw that W.D. was going to the show.
Second, BOC has done acoustic sets before, like on cruises and whatnot. While much of their stuff isn't really suited for it (or would be underwhelming), a lot of it really works acoustically. Indeed, their previous incarnation as "Stalk-Forrest Group" (after the heralded "Soft White Underbelly" which did not include co-front man Bloom or long-time original bassist Joe Bouchard) was a delicious amalgam of The Doors, Grateful Dead, and early Pink Floyd (except that the songs were generally pop-length, thank god).

I would have to agree on her. Ditto for the one lady I had for a Roman (late republic) history class (How the HELL do you make Julius Caesar boring?! She managed.) The Religious Studies prof who filled in for the semester I had Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Professor Beduhn, iirc) was awesome. He was thorough and actually managed to make the material come alive.

I really don't dive into the specifics of such debates, mostly because they are only theories and are constantly shifting to try to account for new understandings.
The theory of this biological form begat that biological form which begat that biological form isn't really understood by most people (especially myself included).
To most it's a generally, thinly-understood alternate explanation to existence, formulated by individuals that really have no true claim to full understanding than the mildest among us. They have theory, limited observation and reverse engineering.
The philosophical ramifications of choosing that explanation, however, are firmly understood and play out in real life everyday. Either nothing matters or everything matters. And people, intrinsically, have a belief that things matter. Some choose to deny it, but even in their verbal outward denial, they do not truly act as if nothing matters.

I wouldn't wish engineering on anyone that didn't want it. I probably would have gone computer science if I could have done it all again. But it's an honest living.
You need to have "the nack" as Dilbert said. And that isn't an ability, no, it's a deep burning desire to solve problems. Take things apart, wack it with a stick, figure it out, and fix the things that don't work. It's an itch you have to scratch. You know how people complain that some men just want to solve problems? It's that times a million. I will stay awake at night working problems over in my head that I haven't cracked yet. Not out of stress but because that process feels good. It's weird, I know.
That desire forms and fuels the ability. If they don't have that desire then I believe engineering would be a prison sentence. I've seen that before. The best hope for any person who finds themself in that position is to punch out and start over again somewhere else or maybe go into management.

actually I always found the Norse religion rather fascinating - in many ways, it's not that different a view of the world EXCEPT that there is no salvation, no redemption, only death at the end. I have always tried to think of other historical figures who can come close to matching his... brilliance? Audacity? Fate? and aside from Alexander the Great, I have a hard time coming up with many.
Some had elements of it, like Napoleon or even Robert E Lee, but they did not have it all the time, on demand like he seemed to have. Even when he had set backs, his enemies always figured that he was setting a trap for them when he was beaten, and so did not follow up.

Part of why Michael Jordan had so much presence is both he was that damn good, and once that got into people's heads they wanted to try to outthink him in order to not be posterized. Which more often than not (in his prime) contributed to them being posterized. You miss every shot you don't take, but you get afraid it will be crammed down your neck and give him the opportunity to set the tempo. And then bam, you're on the poster as he dunks over you.

Caesar faced Pompey- considered the greatest general of his generation.

Caesar flattened all of these and Augustus was able to come behind and deal with a MUCH more clear field over the course of a very long time.

That really pissed me off. 2nd Edition was the Golden Age of D&D for my group. We had a long-term campaign that met every weekend owned all the accessories and maps and cards. And it wouldn't translate over to 3rd. Or I should say it was easier to translate parts of 3rd that we liked then transfer the entire campaign setting over to 3rd.
3rd Edition was not necessary and we viewed it as a money grab to force everyone to buy new source books.

I did catch them at a Huntsville, Alabama concert a couple a days before I left to be a platoon leader in Erlangen, FRG, so many years ago. The T-shirt I bought at that concert faded into tatters, sadly.

The whole thing with laws for war is that those that follow them do so because they think they can win without coloring outside the lines, and hope that by doing so they can take certain threats against themselves off the table. It's actually not a bad side gig. I can make close to $500 over a busy weekend, delivering to a suburban residential zone as well as a mid-sized college. I drive a beater, and the mileage write-off usually covers the taxes.

IF you assume that early hominids split duties such that the female with children were foraging for plants and fruits and the males were either fucking off or trying to kill/capture/find animals for protein, then you'd see that being able to detect color differences were really important for one group and less important for the other. You might think that the difference in the number of color receptors between the sexes would be another indicator.
So, an early male hominid with the ability to detect subtle differences in color would not be a de-facto benefit while an early female hominid's ability to detect if that particular fruit is ripe or not by its color could be a de-facto benefit.
Since we have tools in these times, you could even create a simulation to see how that might work.

You would have liked our group. We had a good balance between Hack & Slash and Sherlock Holmes. more importantly we had three rotating DMS so that the game would never die, went on for over 10 years.
And since all three of us were mages we had a little round table to approve new spells. So may just got to finally research new ideas and use them in a campaign before it ended

Starting out by laying new carpet and repainting the walls, hanging red Christmas lights around the ceiling corners for ambience. To custom designed computer desks and of course the best quality gaming computers I could find. Along with satek controllers.

I'm interested, but I am also about the only person who wasn't Hair on Fire over the end here as it was rushed but much of what was done was set up in advance, just slowly and then they needed to speed things up.
But I am an anime fan, and you kind of have to be use to rushed -or incomplete- endings to stay in that hobby.

Yeah I don't know, I didn't have any pain on mine, it was just "Oh hey turns out the c7 is almost all gone, and a good jolt could shatter it completely" that had me go "Yeah, let's do that procedure where you say you have no idea if it will work and no one else is willing to try for that reason."
The only pain I got was for a while after,,,though maybe in retrospect there was some pain from time to time and I just wrote t off as normal? It wasn't anything like it sounds like your sister's is though. Hope they find something to deal with that.

It wasn't, but if it continued it would have been. In the note Wheadon wrote for the Serenity scriptwriters he wrote about the Alliance was a totalitarian state, but not a bad totalitarian state.
Right, cause a good state experiments with people control and creates Reaves (Get you vaxx!). Plus if the Alliance isn't evil then the shady to horrible stuff the Firefly's crew does to avoid them makes the crew just evil.
So all that, plus Whedon's record of fucking up his shows that run long enough for him to start tinkering with makes me not completely broken up that Firefly ended when I'd still miss it.

In this case (meaning mine, not the jab), beats the alternative. Had a friend who was younger than I am now pass away almost a decade ago from pneumonia. I'd heard she was in the ICU, but thought "Hey, It's 2010 something, and they'll get her back on her feet shortly."
That kind of woke me up that medicine is amazing, but it ain't perfect. And frankly, when God says it is your time to come home, well no one gets to tell Him He's going to have to wait because they made this new pill.

Was yearly bloodwork and this year a bone density test. That test has changed for the worse but still deciding how much worse before we do something about it.

Its Wheadon, I suspect most of his though is to who he can cast that will boink him. I've heard a good deal of the set up was actually from Tim Minear who also was an Ex producer, so it might be a case of the libertarian things coming from Minear and Wheadon punching up the dialogue but not really getting it. Hence why I think if it had gone on, it would have wokeified.

I'm sorry. I hope the bone density can be something as simple as a bone strengthener -I get Zometa in Sept- but also understand that as we age the body does less bone building so that may not be an option. Let me know how that turns out, please. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Maybe ask about Zometa then? Maybe it is a personal thing but I don't think I feel any pain afterwards from it, and I'm not sure I have a particularly high pain tolerance.
Then again, doctors do love when patients ask about drugs they heard of from others/on TV.
