The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Likewise, a woman attempting to represent the United States at the Olympic games can turn her back on the flag and the national anthem, insist that America is a racist, no-good, oppressive nation with a history of genocide, and still take all the taxpayer money that went into her training, sustenance, healthcare and general well-being, washed through the bureaucracy of the "Olympic Committee".

Someone please oppress me in this fashion?

It's just another form of welfare.Matthew Noto

Quote II

“If Black lives really matter, it can’t only be against police abuse. It has to be against the violence that’s ripping apart our communities,” NYC Mayoral Candidate Eric Adams

Quote III

I’ve had people from all over the globe messaging me which is completely insane. It’s really heartwarming that so many people are so determined to help, even though they know nothing about Rosie and out of the goodness of their heart they just want to help.18-year-old Josie Wheel

Quote IV

"It certainly doesn’t mean that we are blessing everything that happens in China by any means. We are at root an American company, and so we follow U.S. government policy. But it’s my expectation that we will continue to distribute our games in China… and that we can play a productive role in helping the people of the United States and the people of China have a better understanding of each other, and see that we’re all human beings and that there is commonality between us." NBA Commissioner Penis Head Adam Silver

I don't know about you. I'm perfectly content to look old. So is the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum.

According to new research, there may be a surprisingly effective way for men to increase their lifespans — but it requires a pretty severe alteration to the physical body that may not appeal to everybody.

An international team led by researchers from the University of Otago in New Zealand were able to show that castration of male sheep delays the aging of DNA, and the same principles could apply to humans as well.

“Both farmers and scientists have known for some time that castrated male sheep live on average much longer than their intact counterparts; however, this is the first time anyone has looked at DNA to see if it also ages slower,” said Victoria Sugrue, a researcher at the University of Otago and lead author of a paper about the research published in the journal eLife, in a statement.

If you aren’t a liberal when you’re young, you have no heart, but if you aren’t a middle-aged conservative, you have no head.

A prisoner participating in California’s controversial inmate-firefighter program stole a fire engine while on the job for a July 4 fireworks-related vegetation fire and crashed, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

The 31-year-old inmate, whose identity was not disclosed other than he is from Orange County, had been serving his sentence since 2015. The state’s program trains prisoners and deploys them to help fight wildfires in exchange for time off their sentence as well as $2 to $5 in pay per day.

On Sunday around 10.50pm, the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit responded to a vegetation fire in Shingle Springs related to illegal fireworks, The Sacramento Bee reported. The inmate who was part of the crew went behind the wheel of the firetruck and accelerated around 12.40am on Monday.

Rehabilitation, yeah that works.

Last night we discussed we aren't voting our way out of this. I hate to be the Cob of gloom and doom. But.................

A new deep dive into the 2020 electorate by Pew Research contains mostly bad news for Republicans, whose approaching demographic doom is less racial than it is generational. While it shouldn't be news to anyone at this point that young voters are a solidly blue voting bloc, the more worrisome developments for the GOP are the unexpectedly elderly nature of the party's coalition and the unyielding Democratic lean of younger voters as they age. If Pew's numbers are to be believed, the only solidly Republican age demographic last year was 75 and over, meaning that every time the sun comes up, the GOP's struggle to win a majority of American voters gets harder.

Pew's in-depth study uses validated voter files – matching panelists to a registration database confirming whether or not they turned out – to offer a different, and possibly more accurate, view of the electorate than the exit polls taken on Election Day. Often this new data can challenge narratives that set in stubbornly and immediately after the votes are counted – in 2016, for example, Pew's research found that Donald Trump won white women by a considerably smaller margin than Election Day surveys indicated, upending one prevailing story about who was most responsible for Hillary Clinton's stunning loss.

I found this morning before Dave in Fla posted his well written thread this morning.

If I was in High School and this girl's date, I would ask, "How do I get this damn thing off of you?"

Ottawa teen creates prom dress entirely out of duct tape

OTTAWA -- We’ve all heard the saying, “you can fix anything with duct tape,” but one Ottawa teen is going above and beyond with an idea she had, and she’s sticking to it.

It’s called the Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest, put on by Duck Brand duct tape. High schoolers across North America are given the chance to win US$10,000 by making a tuxedo or dress entirely out of duct tape.

“It’s not like your average scholarship where you have to write essays, so I thought it would be super fun,” says Erika Avellaneda.

Avellaneda is now a finalist, beating 102 other dresses to make it to the top five.

“I worked for about 143 hours. Some days, I worked five hours, other days one or two,” says Avellaneda. “It was a hard process. A lot of sitting down and working, but it was worth it.”

The dress is made of roughly $100 worth of duct tape, 17 rolls, and it weighs about six pounds.

Personally, I wanted us to leave Afghanistan. Perhaps I should have made myself clear, "Don't leave the goddamn weapons and ammo behind." Duh!

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban have showed off containers full of weapons and military hardware seized from the Afghan military as American forces withdraw from the country and the militants march across the country.

The weaponry includes 900 guns, 30 light tactical vehicles and 20 army pickup trucks, according to NBC News' U.K. partner Sky News, which was granted access to the Sultan Khil military base in the Wardak province close to the Afghan capital, Kabul.

District after district has fallen to the Taliban. The militants have seized 120 districts since May 1, according to an ongoing assessment by the Long War Journal. The map is a moving patchwork, but at last count the Taliban controlled 193 districts and contested 130, while 75 were under the control of the government or are undetermined, according to the publication, which reports on the global war on terror and is a project of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish Washington think tank.

Naked Old Guys Arrested For Public Tryst
Florida officially emerges from COVID doldrums

JULY 2--If you need further proof that Florida has fully emerged from the pandemic doldrums, two nude old guys were arrested Wednesday evening after police spotted them having sex in public, records show.

According to an arrest report, a St. Petersburg cop caught Daniel McCleary, 60, and Donald Engstrom, 59, “engaged in sexual acts while completely naked and in public view.” The duo was collared around 10:25 PM in the vicinity of a small park.

After the pair was arrested, Engstrom reportedly admitted that “they were in fact having sex,” Officer Zachary Lamour reported.

It's OK to stop a parade at times. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

BRIDGETON, Mo. – Joan Cather has been instructing martial arts students for years. She experienced a first on Sunday when her ATA Martial Arts crew was part of the Bridgeton Fourth of July parade. A fellow instructor, an off-duty area police officer, stopped their float after noticing someone along the parade route in need of medical attention.

“The two of us ran to the gentleman,” Cather said. “My instructor started doing compressions; I was checking for a pulse.”

Cather said they began performing CPR. She said, “When we got there, we know there was no pulse.”

138 Regarding the Pew survey, they did validate whether or not the respondent reported voting but did not properly distribute the respondents by geographic area so that California and NY might be overly represented. Best of the actual surveys of who voted is the Census Bureau's CPS survey which in election years adds some questions (not about who they voted for but generally questions about voting itself).Dunno if that is out yet but the respondents are about 50k versus 11-12k for the Pew survey.

From their reports, it is also difficult to determine whether or not their earlier surveys indicated loss of panel respondents from one election to another or whether past voting claims were validated.

Essentially, the Pew Survey suggests that Bush crapped in the nest during the Millenial formative voting period and that Millenials have continued to vote blue since then and that Trump's most solid support came from old people. The snarky The Week story overplays the data from Pew and ignores the whole idea behind disasters in governance affecting future voting patterns.

GOP candidate can get 74 million votes, not even close to that.

Trump will need somewhere in the vicinity of 90 million votes to win in 2024.

Can the Donks cheat enough to overcome that?

Probably.

That runs in my family. I swear I've pulled a candle out before. Dis-fricken-gusting! I got into a car accident which was bad enough to knock me out for a short time. The only missing time I've ever experienced. Note, if you ever have the opportunity to not slam into the side of a concrete embankment at 55mph in a pre-airbag 1970s vehicle I'd suggest avoiding it.

Anyway, at the hospital, they had to stick an optical thingy up in my ears to see if my brains were leaking out. But they were full of wax. So they hook me up to this device that shoots high-pressure ice-cold water into your ear to clear it out. The ER guy was explaining to me, (I was perfectly conscious at that point) with a loud voice that one of the great advantages of this device is it normally brings unconscious people wide awake due to the terrible shock. Oh, you don't fucking say. I can actually see that now think you so much.

188 188 Dave in Fla,
Thanks for your earlier analytical post. In general, the GOP has a number of actual voters and contra Pew has at least a competitive chance in fair elections through 2024 or so.

The GOPe is slowly realizing that their voters are pissed enough to at least try to make kabuki movements toward electoral integrity in some states and some real advances in others. Florida and Ohio show quite a bit of evidence that if the GOP actually enforces the laws on election integrity in states where it controls, that it can reduce the margin of fraud significantly. The Scotus ballot harvesting decision also means that GOP states can curb most of the obvious problems where it can pass and enforce laws.
What though is truly explosive is exactly how broad the fraud machine's reach was and whether or not this will effect elections in the future. Even most Dems do not want their votes taken for granted and support ideas like Voter ID. Likewise, our current crop of oligarchs worshipping China and big corporations is not exactly popular nor are the companies that they run. Covid will continue to have legs in the policy debate as well.

I like that Ace has given Dave the platform to create content. Blogging is difficult, time consuming, and mostly unrewarding. Dave's a longtime moron in good standing, and he's certainly taken more lumps than most.

But there would be little point to any of this if we were all always on the same page. There are reasonable arguments on both sides of the "vote" issue, and I find them all fairly compelling. I also find it interesting to see who falls on which side, because it's not the split you would necessarily predict.

What I hoped to convey in my post is that you should NOT participate in a rigged game. We all know now that it is rigged. Voting for R because it is better than D is not a good strategy, and I hope that point was made in what I wrote.

Where I do recommend participation is when your vote can make an actual difference, such as voting for a sheriff who will not enforce gun regulations or voting out a school board member.

Speaking for myself, I do not consider you a communist for not participating in elections. Refusing to vote R after what they did is a rational choice, IMO. It just isn't a choice I am making.

At one level, voting is an application of game theory and we should acknowledge that. In a game where two people are competing on a level playing field (vote or not vote), then it usually makes sense to vote more often than not. However, when one player cheats all the time, then the rational response over time is to either cheat as well or not play at all. I think we are long past that point.

Posted by: Doof at July 07, 2021 09:59 PM (mZUr4)

232 150 Lord Squirrel,
There are rarely only two options regarding what to do. Obviously, fighting politically to prevent general Vote by Mail is imperative. Laws against ballot harvesting are also important as are laws that punish misconduct by election officials including imprisonment and harsh fines. Banning any private entity from financing poll operations and workers is also quite doable. Removal of election officials in a county for misconduct, similar to removal of sheriffs, is also necessary. Louisiana passed a law (vetoed but might be overridden) going to paper ballots for example.

The major thing is that most people commenting have never actually done much in political fieldwork. Personal contact with potential voters bypasses the automatic disregard for campaign ads, flyers, robocalls, etc. Grassroots campaigns can work and overcome even very large financial differences and it is because an individual voter's opinions and vote is asked for. Read Robert Heinlein's Take Back Your Government how things used to work and can do so again.

I'm loathe to say any more after this shitshow of a day at the HQ, but your thoughts echoed mine, so I'll do one last post to back you up and say some final thoughts.

I may be off base on this, but I feel like the two sides battling today are the CivNat Boomercons who get very angry when some people point out that our entire civic system has broken down and cynical, red-pilled GenXers who realize that no one's looking out for us and there's not going to be any deus ex machina (which is where I bin myself). There's a fundamental chasm in our views, and I don't know if it will be bridged. Being shrieked at by someone acting like an assmad proggie because you don't agree with their premises doesn't make one want to find common ground either.

You're cool, SMH, and I hope you stay active here.

262 230 Lord Squirrel, the problem with formally analyzing it via game theory is this is not a prisoner's dilemma type game. Instead the voting game is packed within the political game which is packed within the society game.

Knew a prof of political science that claimed voting was irrational and so did not vote. His reasoning was that the potential payoff or loss was inconsequential versus the real cost of voting. The problem with that is that the payoffs or avoiding potential losses versus the relatively known costs are indeterminate because the payoff and avoidance of losses rely on players outside the individual vote in the voting game. The not voting supposition relies on the idea that the status quo on policy and society will move toward or at least not away from the non participating voter's wishes.

Ironically, the independent counsel's office disappeared after the Dems got a taste of it during the Billy Jeff years. Imagine how Obama would have liked an independent counsel investigation of Benghazi, etc.

Vicinage (justice within a district--i.e. jury and judge) is an important concept that should not be discarded but vicinage has never had to apply to the prosecutors brought into a district as special prosecutors.

I've heard "Motherfucking Wisconsin" used in Chicago as a means of suggesting that a location is somewhat remote or inconvenient.

Speaking of ptarmigans, Chicken, Alaska was originally supposed to be named Ptarmigan, but when the miners were filling out the form to request a post office they couldn't agree on how to spell it. So, Chicken it is.

318 "I kinda felt like slitting my wrists after reading through the comments."

Nah, some of us are just frustrated by GOP impotence and taking it out on anyone implying our vote will count. Lucy with the football, again.

It's a sticky situation because in our hearts we know what it means, what must come next, and we don't have the Will for it. We believed in violence only as a last resort, never thought it would come to that, but it's now looming in the background as more and more alternatives get crossed of the list. And that's frightening.

We can't fight the Left, so we kick the puppy instead.

I still don't agree with you premise, but I admit that doing *something* at the local level (your idea) is better than venting online and pretending anyone with spirit is an FBI mole.

I know you're the limerick king but have you ever done off the cuff verse?

Every couple of years I do a take-off of The Night Before Christmas. Most recently I did A Deer Camp Christmas.

Also, this year my local town library is publishing an anthology of COVID-inspired poetry and such. I took one of my COVID limericks (about the barmaid who went up the stair to see what was there and came down with a case of Corona) and wrote a poem about Corona where the first letter of each word spells out the limerick, just to see if I could sneak it past the judges. I think they are going to publish it because they sent me an e-mail saying they didn't have enough submissions, would I do another. Heh!

I don't think you can argue here that the GOPe is a rational path to an improved nation. And I also don't think you can argue for complete avoidance of civic duty. Both of those are strawmen arguments of course and probably weren't an element of the arguments here. Just trying to highlight different dead ends.

As for me, I wish to dismantle any authoritarian power structure that minimizes me the individual. If that means participating with the Rs to destroy the Rs from the inside. Sure. But I'm never going to support a politician again in the hopes that they or their party will advance. I vote for me and mine. I'm that wrecker you always hear leftists complain about; which is funny because their efforts in 2020 to now have helped make me who I am.

I very much welcome Dave's input and will use it towards my own goals which are completely unconnected with what the GOPe wants.

403 especially given the abundant mudslide activity in Glenwood Canyon.

****

Yeah- I-70 has been sketchy the last few weeks with frequent unpredictable mudslides in the canyon due to wildfire burn scar from last year.

On top of that, the other main E-W Hwy, US 50 through Gunnison is only open on weekends and short weekday stretches due to construction, probably into mid 2022.

So east-west travel through Colorado is severely affected.

The route through Steamboat and the southern tier (Hwy 160) from Walsenburg to Durango via Wolf Creek Pass are the only two reliable routes.

414 Muldoon, no thought of amusing you, but to continue our extended rambling colloquy (that was my favorite word in the Senate) about Sicily -

The German view on hold/scoot was always split, between different personalities and level of command. Once the extent of the Italian collapse (military) had become clear, and of course when Mussolini was deposed, there was unanimity - fight a delaying action but don't risk any of the quality units that had been sent to reinforce, get them out when before they are trapped.

And it was no cake walk. Not in the latter stages, against the better German formations - and against, of course, possibly the most defense-friendly terrain that saw battle in WWII. Mountainous, few roads or passable routes.

What a fucking shitshow that sounds like.

I love the implication, by the way: That way back in 2010 it was considered "okay" for someone like Raylan to bash a bad guy's head into a steering wheel. So now instead of setting the show in grimy 1981 Detroit and bringing another Leonard world to life, we need to correct Raylan Givens and pay penance for ever more of the Left's lies.

If that's the case, count me way the hell out. And I wouldn't be half as worried were it not for everything being destroyed in this direction.

How long did the Sicily campaign laast? A few weeks? My understanding on a superficial level is that the American forces were very inexperienced, and didn't really face any substantial as they crossed North Africa so they looked at Sicily as a sort of training exercise before the 'main eevent'. Couldn't they have just bypassed Sicily a la the Pacific island hopping technique?

428 Among the interesting names involved in the Sicily campaign were some who were already famous - like Douglas Fairbanks, Jr (naval officer), and those destined to be - like Audie Murphy (who got malaria). Fairbanks was on the command ship, and early in the operation was asked to go to Patton and help him with his statement for the troops at the beginning of the invasion. Fairbanks said he politely told Patton his first effort was fine ..... while he thought it wasn't very good. But he didn't want to get into it with the rich guy in cavalry pants with the ivory-handled revolvers.

458 Operation Husky lasted about 5 weeks.

Actually the US faced a few rough spots in North Africa - most famously Kasserine - but those led to changes, and by the end of the Tunisia campaign, the US forces were starting to find their rhythm a bit.

Of course the British generally had much more combat experienced, having been at it for almost 2 years before we were in the war, and their vastly greater experience vs. the Americans was a factor in giving British forces the "main" job in Sicily - landing on the eastern side and driving north to Messina. The Americans did such a good job taking all of western Sicily quickly (albeit against crumbling Italian opposition) that by the time came for the final phase, Alexander and Montgomery had a lot more confidence in the US ground forces.

As to skipping Sicily. Sardinia and Corsica were also considered (and included in deception efforts) as targets. It was felt that Sicily offered the best geographic option - air cover from Malta and North Africa being the biggest consideration. Mainland Italy would have been beyond the range of intensive/constant air operations (air power was not carrier-based, as in the Pacific).

At the time kiss was good for young guitar players to hone their skills, because Ace Frehley was good, but just easy enough to learn shit at a decent pace, since we were learning shit from vinyl, and that was a pain in the fucking ass lifting the needle off the album every 5 seconds. You did have have to get the fuck out after a bit, because you will eventually hit a wall. Once you learn a few albums you're not going to learn anything more skill wise and its best to move on.

477 Allied planners were absolutely - and reasonably - fixated on air cover as the key. Thus Sicily was the only real candidate for invasion.

And to address one more part of Muldoon's question, yes, the whole operation was seen as a learning experience prior to the cross-Channel invasion planned for less than a year hence. And it was a ground-breaker in many ways. Largest amphibious op in history, to date, first major Allied joint operation, first major operation against European continent.

Debut of the amazing American logistics machine, that kept forces in the west supplied during their rapid advance, despite the primitive and difficult conditions. This particularly caught the eye of Alexander and Montgomery, as it was beyond anything the Brits had ever managed. So in this way too a foretaste of the campaign in France and into Germany.

491 Muldoon, by July 1943 the Allies owned the Med. There was no naval opposition or even involvement in the Sicily campaign, that I know of. At least maybe until the very end, at the Messina evacuation.

But it wasn't always thus. One of the more interesting and obscure but important theaters was the Med from spring 1940 (when Italy entered the war) on. Italy's navy was hamstrung by fuel shortages, and lack of coordination/cooperation from their air force. Notwithstanding this, the Reggia Marina was a serious problem for the UK, and no joke, as many perceive WWII Italian forces to have been.

But by July '43 the Brits, with US help, dominated the Med completely.

518 Huh? Clinton v. Trump?

Didn't look at the Pew thing that was discussed earlier, but gather from comments that it asserts what I find implausible: that Trump/GOP have been demographically outpaced, or something?

PA had record levels of party registration gainzz for the GOP after 2016. A few other states, as well. Trump won counties never before won by a GOP prez candidate in 2020. He had 50% or above approval, and increased his vote by more than any incumbent in history. All of which makes sense, when one remembers he was partly responsible for (not just a bystander) for the best economy in generations, possibly the best since the now mythical age-mist-shrouded 50s.

But there has been some magical tectonic shift towards defund the police, open borders, and a sluggish economy with high prices? Nah.

Posted by: Muldoon at July 07, 2021 10:49 PM (Xwt96)

I don't know, I can write sort of that way, it is a matter of resetting my mental references, but I can't do palindromes.
Once upon a time, when I was living the go-go-go no-margin lifestyle, I found I could ask for a word, pretty much any word and then spell it back with the letters in alphabetic order. (Cat is ACT, house is EHOUS) I was so wound up all the time I could dismember words like that, on the fly.

Can't do that any more, and my life is so much nicer now.

604 Branching the subject, I swear, I am NOT arguing vote or don't vote...

Republicans were eerily quiet while Obama and Co gutted the country and stocked up our intelligence agencies and military. I pointed the sound of silence out at the time and got told I was an idiot, crazy etc, that they were "Fightin". But even among those who could hear the quiet, the excuse for the GOP back then was they didn't want to appear "racist".

Yet that same eerie quiet has settled over them again. Including most importantly about what happened this last "election".

There is a REASON for the silence and IMO it isn't blackmail or wanting to please the press. Or certainly not being afraid of being called racist.

Still haven't figured out what it is but I am becoming one with my theory that most of them have knowingly benefited from electoral fraud in the past, be it in primaries or whatever. I know I'll be called an idiot for that too, but that is where my speculation has lead me.

Posted by: ... at July 08, 2021 12:40 AM (X4Ded)

605 Have you ever been in a relationship that you knew was over way before the other person did? That's where I am with the GOP. I've checked out. I'm not interested in fixing the relationship. We're not building a future together. It's over. I'm not leaving, I've left. So when others get mad and start talking about surrender, cowardice, and whatnot, I'm not phased. I care about as much as sane people do about the opinions of their exes: not at all. That's part of the benefit of the whole ex- thing.

Part of what convinced me to walk away was hanging out here, funnily enough. It just became clear to me that I want vastly different things than most conservatives, who seem mostly interested in conserving whatever the status quo is at any given moment. That's a soulless endeavor that isn't worth a moment of my time or effort. I cannot achieve what I want with the GOP. We just have too little in common.

616 SFG, right now reading "Sicily '43", by a Brit author. Recent. I'd call it a popular history, but with some depth and substance. As I am starting from scratch - Italy is the biggest/worst of my blank spots on WWII - I am learning a fair amount.

Related, one I read a few years, ago, I'd strongly recommend "Struggle for the Middle Sea" by Vincent O'Hara. It's mostly about UK vs Italy, Royal Navy vs. Reggia Marina, which is a big story generally not well known. Pretty interesting. As I noted in a comment way above, Italy was no laughingstock or push-over for the Brits, when it came to the Med. They were a major problem.

618 Well, I am going to call it a night. Spent the day pressure-washing mouse shit out of a derelict Studebaker I dragged home. Probably over a hundred pounds of shit, but I have no way to prove that. It was a vast quantity. The doors were full of it.

The car will likely get parted out. I don't think there is a way to make it not stink. And the mouse pee has rusted holes where rust holes should never be.

623 SFG, not to cause you harm by giving you virtually limitless rabbit-holes down which to pour your time, there are few UToob channels on WWII you might find interesting, if you don't know them alread.

Not specifically WWII only, but naval, and excellent, is Drachinifel. He recently had Jonathan Parshall, the leading US scholar of the Battle of Midway, on for 2 separate interview segments (long).

TIK is an interesting young Brit who focuses on the eastern front, and interacts/relies on many of the leading historians - British, American, German, and Russian.

One I only recently came across, very interesting stuff on the southwest Pacific, because Australian, is hypohystericalhistory. Operations Room does very high quality animated bits on specific battles.

625 Bush the Elder rightly gets lots of the blame.

I was a USAF cop in the Carter years. Was detailed on a few occasions to secure various Crypto facilities.

Those Crypto pukes were so fucking proto-DeepState and leftward, as to be the grandparents of today's snowflakes. Thing about max-scoring induction test savants. They take those rankings to heart, and believe they're better than the rest. Not so much as one of them could change the tire on a '706, and maybe one could shoot Expert with the '16, out of a hundred. I dated a hawt Crypto chick. Head case by the end of the first dinner, and I opted to not close the deal. Even though she clearly disclosed the security key well before dessert.

626 "There is a REASON for the silence and IMO it isn't blackmail or wanting to please the press. Or certainly not being afraid of being called racist. Still haven't figured out what it is but - "

I did a brief stint in sales for a funeral home, pre-arranged where you pay off your funeral, casket and plot while you are younger. The whole "save your loved ones the burden so they aren't preyed on while they are grieving over you" spiel.

Needless to say, it was a very hard sell, everyone had horrible numbers except for this ONE lady who the manager kept holding up as proof the sales goals could not be met but even exceeded. Couldn't figure out what her secret was and I quit in frustration.

Came back a year later on other business and poked my head in to say hello. Guess what? The manager was now the "top salesmen" and the lady was the "manager". They were both managers, they just swapped places every few years when they got a batch fresh fish and played their roles. Pretending they were meeting the goals no one else could.

I think something similar is in play the GOP. Its the Establishment Party (E), the whole Dem-GOP dynamic is a ruse.

A large part of the silence, is that they have SEEN others who rocked the boat, and got squashed.

When your job and the economic health of your family is on the line, its very easy to remain silent.

I WATCHED IT HAPPEN. Those who would agree with you privately, would Kow Tow to the 'politically correct' line, when asked.

631 Romeo13. I had the scores for Crypto, and/or Combat Controller.

But I already knew I wanted to be nothing more than a One Hitch Wonder. I enlisted so as to get my Mom on as a dependent in her final years. Rules changed, and I failed. But did send her all but pocket change of my miserable Carter Years E-1 to E-3 salary.

Only regret was turning down a cush Pentagon assignment, as that would've tripled my distance from Mom. But it would've been a career-maker had I taken it. It was offered by a Lt. Gen., who thought I was an Outstanding Airman and Cop. But had I taken it, when my Mom was on her deathbed, I'd have not got that one final squeeze from her dying hand. And that was the world to me then. And now.

633 Mostly a lurker... but here's a blood raising story. Reported by the Deseret News, which has taken a hard left turn... but maybe, just maybe is suddenly starting to worry a bit about the hard march into commieville we are doing.

The story is about Biden's "Race war" he is stirring up among ranchers. I didn't know this, but there's a new debt relief bill for ranchers stricken by COVID. Except.... it specifically says "no whites allowed." Literally. No white ranchers are allowed to apply. This is Jim Crow level.

The Deseret News article actually interviews a green card Mexican rancher and a white female rancher who both oppose Biden's racist stuff. A federal judge slapped an injunction on it, saying "the way to stop discriminating on race is to stop discriminating on race." One of the few good lines from Roberts, I believe.

This April, I was able to visit my Mom's grave in Whittier, CA, for the first time, since she passed in 1978. My life has been a Texas Whirlwind, ever since that time. Literally. Choices you make young, become earthquakes you endure, older. Not complaining, but it is what it is.

The visit was profound, and I took pics of her marker. I'll not now discuss the "profound" part, other than that it ruined the moment, and the day.

642 I assume Eric Adams will win the NYC Mayor Election, since I can't see Curtis Sliwa winning (or even really reaching Milliotakis' 350K votes. So I hope he is the somewhat middle of the road candidate he says he is, when it comes to crime and policing. Everywhere else he seems to be completely all over the map, so it's hard to say where he stands (I assume far to the left, but not as far as the asshole in charge or his current underlings)

Either way the mayor's next 4 years are going to be filled with fixing this ever growing shit hole, so hopefully they don't have the time to push more bad ideas.

I'm surprised (or I missed) there wasn't a quick hit about little bitch Lebron being a little bitch and crying that an announcer pointed out his kid's special treatment. Never has a giant man, with so much money, been such a tiny little pussy.

At the enlisted barracks we had a Pahteee.... started out with me sitting in my lawnchair, with my surfboard behind me... waiting for the 'wave'. Then Big Murph, a friend of mine, brought out his dive gear, and sat beside me... within a few hours we had over 100 people partying at the barracks.. would not let you join us unless you were at LEAST in a bathing suit.

Then... as every was on 2 2 2 and 80.... at 11 the Next crew got off work, and the party started all over again...

Actually got security to make a beer run for us... good times.

644 When I was in ROTC, for some reason my army reserve engineering battalion (820th Engineers, San Pablo, CA) was at Treasure Island one weekend back when it was a naval base. Anyways, we're inside some building and I asked one of the squids where the closest head was and he stood there slackjawed that an army cadidiot knew what the navy word for latrine was. I rolled my eyes and told him that my father was in the navy during Korea and I had a great uncle who was the doc on a WWI-era battleship.

I plan to do a bike ride after to deal with the stress

699 Later starts are nice, unless that means a later end?

I really should be out the door but I'm still contemplating something to eat or not.

Eat a bite. It's always better to have that.

Pronounced different than what you would think.

711 "it would be nice if they could bothered to at least describe some productive measures. Repeatedly spamming "you're vote is worthless" has no effective difference from leftists running psy-ops."

I disagree. It's not a psy-op to point out that our current strategy isn't yielding results and that we should consider alternatives.

Some of those alternatives can't be discussed in a public forum. But even if someone doesn't have a solution, they can still identify which solutions aren't working.

For example, I don't know how to get the electricity turned back on, but I'm certain that stabbing the electrical socket with a knife over and over again is not getting us there

How delicately phrased. And how accurate.

716 Thanks again for the linkage, ONT!

@Muldoon/rhomboid:

Sicily was necessary in order to secure transit routes to Malta and the Suez. Malta was the key to the entire war in the Med, but the Germans, specifically, were not convinced. The Italians and British certainly knew it. German strategic planning centered on Italy and Greece as the important places.

Securing the route to Malta was certainly important in 1940-41, when NA was the only theater in which the British could engage the Axis, however, with the defeat of the Africa Corps in 1942 and the surrender of Italy the following year, the Sicilian and subsequent Italian campaigns became (mostly) irrelevant.

So, basically, we secured passage to Malta at exactly the moment it no longer became vital to secure passage to Malta.

Still, there was much learned that came in handy for Overlord.
