23 But they had not gone twenty yards when they stopped short. An uproar of voices was coming from the farmhouse. They rushed back and looked through the window again. Yes, a violent quarrel was in progress. There were shoutings, bangings on the table, sharp suspicious glances, furious denials.

The source of the trouble appeared to be that Napoleon and Mr. Pilkington had each played an Ace of Spades simultaneously.

61 I love the humor in the painting with the suspicious looks, the smirk of the cheat, and perhaps even the fashions of the women. de la Tour specialized in painting scenes of candle-lit areas which lends a comfortable warmth to the image even when the scene is serious. (I wonder if it allowed use of a limited palette which would have saved money.) I enjoy the detail in the painting, especially the clothes and feathers.

I do wonder who commissioned the painting. He must have had a great sense of humor.

127 Now that we're at 100, and hopefully I won't end up in the Barrel, but this happened yesterday in DC. I think you can all figure out why the thief didn't last a block:

"1D officers and detectives are currently on the scene investigating a Robbery that occurred today at about 2:15 PM where a vehicle was taken in the 500 block of G St SE. The suspect approached the victim and demanded his car keys. The suspect then went to the victim's vehicle and drove it to the intersection of 5th and G Streets SE where the vehicle's controls proved too cumbersome and the suspect fled. A significant patrol response with support from our police helicopter and an observant citizen led to apprehension of the offender."

322 Milton Bradley was a lithographer. He made his living making and selling copies of photographs. His biggest seller was always presidential portraits, so when Abraham Lincoln was elected, Bradley sunk everything he had into portraits of the new President.

Then a little girl wrote a letter to Lincoln saying, "Hey, you know what, Mr. President? You should totally grow a beard. You'd look so cool!" Lincoln took her advice, and suddenly nobody wanted Bradley's crummy old beardless portraits of him.

Bradley created The Game of Life, the first "modern" board game, so other people could know the pain of being financially ruined by a bizarre chance event.

hell-attack on the Capitol but it's not going to be any good because he
hasn't made anything good in the last 25 years.

probably based on the political cartoon that's all over my facebook feed. panel 1 involves a protester stabbing a cop with a flagpole carrying an american flag. panel two involves a mob storming the capitol with trump shouting and pointing, egging them on. penultimate panel is protesters carrying the confederate battle flag through the capital. final panel is "never forget" with "vote here --->" sign. a couple of panels in the middle that i've mercifully forgotten, but will no doubt see again this evening.

I'm guessing they would say Pennsylvania--or Indiana.

It's called gun trafficking, why would one state be the limit if everybody shooting up shit in Chicago gets their guns from Indiana? Hasn't Indiana proved its worth to the other state's gun-runners?

Thus, the nation's "gun problems" can all be laid at the feet of Indiana with about the same amount of evidence as Chicago produces.

Saw Crowder's show last night, he briefly recapped his visit to an Indiana gun show and his attempt to even try to bribe a vendor into selling him a gun without a background check. He mentioned that people approached him afterward offering to sell him a gun out of their van, but that's illegal anyway.

As if guns can't be sold out of the back of vans in Chicago after they have decreased police coverage?!

495 Personal vehicle driving is a public health emergency! We need a government agency tasked with reducing private automobile use.

Anything the left needs to control people on is now a public health emergency and requires a specially powered government agency to control the people... for their own safety.

498 Last night, I was at a friend's house and they had on the NBA finals - you can't escape them here in Milwaukee. People who never paid attention to the Bucks at all are suddenly basketball fans. So I watched the game with them and I noticed all the commercials were geared to a black audience. One made me laugh aloud - I forget what it was for but it showed a young AA woman dreaming about going to Africa and of course once she's there, she's dressed like a princess, in all sorts of fine robes and jewelry and it's all very romantic.

Instead of reparations, I would be willing to support sending AA's - especially women - over to Africa for lengthy vacations since some of them seem to think they'd be queens and princesses now if it weren't for those slave traders. Yeah, right.

500 I am all for racial scapegoating in schools via Critical Race Theory, as long as they equally promote Manifest Destiny/White Man's Burden. Of course they should also mention that MD/WMB has been scrapped for a hundred years, and ask why the teachers are pushing a new and improved version today.

Posted by: Downcast at July 07, 2021 10:21 AM (ng/Cv)

501 To the theorists, America began as a racist country, such that no amount of attempts to reverse that.

The Democrat party was the historical party of racism, but that's totally cool because they have this theory that the party's switched in 1968!

The founding is a *racist* symbol because of the history of racism in the country.

The Democratic party is cool *despite* having backed measures specifically for the white working class--even in the Northeastern states.

Tell me you've ever seen racism outside of the South as bad as a movie about New York in the 50s?
