SHRINKFLATION

I must say I haven't heard a national conversation on inflation since the Carter years. But we're having one now. Old Gropey Joe and his gang of looters and grifters have kicked inflation into high gear, and it's now at, like, 6 or 7%, with no sign of abating.

This country is in the hands of morons. And not the good kind.

Reagan supposedly slayed the inflation beast, but it never really went away. It just buried itself and assumed different forms. And we stopped talking about it.

So what has been happening for the last 40 years is that we haven't had much inflation, but we've had quite a bit of what I've heard called "shrinkflation".

Shrinkflation is what you get when consumer items (and I'm thinking mainly of food here) are reduced in size/quantity, but the price remains the same. Thus we're paying more for less, which is pretty much the textbook definition of inflation.

I'll give you my favorite example: Doritos.

Doritos are my go-to comfort food, and a bowl full of nacho-flavored Doritos along with Mrs. Muse's amazing fresh-made salsa (which recipe may be found in the moron cookbook) is heaven on earth. So I've been eating Doritos as long as we've been married, which is 2021-1985=36 years. That's a long time, and that's many bags of Doritos.

So I have what you might call a vested interest in the price of Doritos, so it's something I follow fairly closely. So I know that in the 1987-1988 timeframe, we could get a bag of Doritos, on sale, for $1.69 or $1.79, approximately. Which is just about the same as today. Only back then, the "standard" bags contained one full pound, 16 ounces, of chips.

Then, at some point, we noticed that the bag weight was suddenly decreased to 15.5 oz. Half of an ounce less, no big deal. Then, later, we noticed that the had snuck the weight down to 15 oz. Then 14.5, then 14. Same price, though. So if you weren't paying attention, you wouldn't think it was different. Although you probably should notice, as we did, that you're running out of Doritos faster than you used to.

Mrs. Muse tells me that the "standard" bag of Doritos is now all the way down to 9.5 oz.(!) That's ridiculous. That's almost a 50% shrinkflation rate in 30 years, which is approx. 1.6% per year. Which doesn't sound bad, but over 30 years, it adds up.

The shrinkflation got so bad that Mrs. Muse changed her Dorito buying strategy. She gave up buying them at Safeway or other local grocery stores and found she could get them at Costco at their usual price of $4.99 for a giant 30 oz. bag. That's approx. 17 cents an ounce, which is a lot closer to the 1980s price (about 11 cents/ounce) than the new shrinkflated price (21 cents/ounce).

Oh, and you can still get the old 16 oz. bags that used to be standard, but now they're labeled "party-sized" and you pay considerably more.

Corn tortillas are smaller, too. I mean, they *look* smaller to my eyes, but I don't have any objective evidence to support my claim since any evidence has all been eaten long ago. Tortillas used to look a little bit larger than a teacup saucer, but now they remind me of oversized hockey pucks. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but when we make tacos, I can't seem to fill them like I used to.

But not all grocery items are shrunk. A quart of milk is still a quart, and a bottle of wine is still 750 ml. Those quantities are standardized by law, I think.

But candy is not. I could swear candy bars have gotten really tiny. But again, I don't have evidence. I should've saved wrappers from "old style" candy bars to get an objective comparison, but I'd feel like I was Captain Queeg obsessing over disappearing strawberry ice cream.

And Tootsie-Roll Pops. I swear when I was a kid, those things were as big as a golf ball, but now they look like a large marble.

And Bidenflation is going to make everything a lot worse really fast.

Yes, I'm a cranky old man. Why do you ask?

Wednesday Who Dis: I thought the connection was going to be tough, but you morons picked up on it pretty quick. BIll Wilder's 1944 drama Double Indemnity starred Barbara Stanwyck and her scheme to dupe some schlub into murdering her husband for the insurance company. The 1981 movie Body Heat stars William Hurt as a schlub who gets duped by a scheming wife into murdering her husband, and it's basically a remake. So Stanwyck and Hurt did not star in the same movie, but pretty close.

If you used the same metric as they used in 1980, our inflation would be 8 POINTS HIGHER than the official government number.

Now, why did they do that? They are trying to minimize the amount of Government debt, by inflating money while NOT giving adequate cost of living increases for those on Soc Sec and such.

38 My WTF inflation moment happened last month. About 5 years ago I bought a bunch of wrought iron fencing. It cost $15 a panel. Nothing super fancy but easy to install and keep dogs out of certain areas of the yard and looks pretty good too.

Fast forward 5 years and I went to Home Depot to buy a few more panels. Cost per panel now is $33. I was like holy fuck seriously? More than 100% price increase in 5 years??!!

I only needed 4 so not a huge deal. But multiply this across everything home cost related and you see quickly why the price of real estate has skyrocketed.

101 Shrinkflation isn't new - consumer packaged goods companies do this all the time.

First, they come out with a product that tastes great and gets everyone hooked. Then, they can go one of two routes to increase profits after they've maxed out on their market share. First, they could keep the same package look and keep the same price, but make the package smaller. My grapefruit juice, for instance, used to be a true half-gallon, but now it's down to 52 oz., at the same price.

The other way is to substitute the original ingredients with cheaper alternatives. Oreos have done this, for instance and I can't stand the texture anymore - it has no firmness, and it melts in your mouth as soon as you put it in. They used to be my favorite cookie. Oh well.

Well, if it's any consolation - and it probably isn't - Doritos are still beating CPI inflation over the same period. Since the late 80s, the cumulative inflation has been closer to 125%.

Inflation is and was happening. What Volker and Reagan were able to arrest is runaway inflation. They got it under control to the point where inflation rates weren't constantly climbing. They sure didn't get it to zero. We never ever can, unless the government stops deficit spending and the Fed stops playing games with preferred actors. That will never happen.

Fair enough. So is the postal service (which is also constitutionally mandated). There are a few in there, but all are costs of doing business of the government. If the government wants to pass and enforce laws, there has to be a skin-in-the-game way of handling that as the cost of doing business under a fair system of governance. But this isn't a right in the same way that the real rights are rights, in that there is a precondition: a crime must be committed, and someone must assert that you did it. There are no preconditions on the true rights (the negative ones).

Status hearing for Oath Keepers case. Judge Mehta presiding. 13 defendants. Thomas Caldwell asking for change of venue out of D.C.
Mehta asking DOJ about progress on 3 Oath Keepers who have been held for months awaiting trial. Watkins, Meggs, Harrelson. Doesn't sound like plea negotiations underway, no trial date set.
Prosecutor says earliest trial date for Oath Keepers conspiracy case is February 2022.
Mehta: Asking lawyers for detained defendants for their view on that schedule since they'll be detained "for quite some time" awaiting trial. No duh
Kelly Meggs lawyer: Says he will file motion related to his detention. Meggs has been in jail since January, faces no violent charges.
In April, Mehta again denied Meggs' release.

326 Tallow is beef fat. Lard is pig fat. Both used to be high in healthy omegas due to the animals being out in sunlight. You can get high quality animal fats now, but they aren't cheap. The lard sold in the stores is hydrogenated, which is not healthy. It's used in Mexican foods which is why you can still buy it in the stores. And coconut oil is healthy. 354 There's another cute one they do where they retain the size of the container so it looks the same but the amount of contents has changed.

A can of tuna costs about 1.89 or so. Still does. Or so. However the original can contained 6 oz of tuna. Filled to the brim. Now you notice it's gone down to as low as 4.5 oz and they use water as a fill liquid whereas they used to use oil for all. Now oil fill is separate and it's a vegetable oil and not fish oil. Most cans I've found now run around 5 to 5.5 if you look around.

They've done that with candy bars. Same ol package but the bar is thinner and/or shorter. A favorite with chips is the bag is about the same size but it's full of air now.

Another one is Toilet Paper. You can see this but still might not notice. The rolls used to be (I think) about 5" across. Some a little wider. Now they're selling them as small as 4" across. You can see this depending on the dispenser you use. This might be more about the low water flush toilets than the price of paper but maybe both.

It's not a huge leap of logic to see how municipal policies in this country are both racist and permissive toward minorities.

The whole thing is of a piece. I can't deny that the justice system where I live is racist. I also can't pretend that it's cracking down on minorities in particular. Or shooting them at a disproportionate rate. Or profiling them. Quite the opposite.

The racism is a problem, but it's a considerably different than the one we all are forced to pretend it is.

It's hurting young men. Perhaps that is the reason behind the requirement; to decimate our armed forces.

Funny how vaccines used to take 10 years to approve, and now, they've cut the red tape! Long-term testing is no long required and Big Pharma can't be sued!

This is a terrible sentence. It's syntactically clumsy, grammatically incorrect, and it expresses a simple idea in a complicated, confusing way.

382 I hate the McRib. It*s spam and bbq sauce. Only not as good. I worked at McDonalds when it first came out. Instead of adding the sauce to sandwich we stored the spam patty in a warmed vat of the sauce until we were ready to make one. That poor excuse for bbq sauce got everywhere and I swear it petrified on contact with any surface.

I have two VERY liberal female friends that are... let's say transitioning out of my sphere of influence that are karens. Both are smart enough, angry at men and pretty unhappy overall.

They both have been vaccinated and are both still wearing masks. Because it's the right thing to do to protect other people. And themselves. I think they will be masking forever. And social distancing. And avoiding everyone who is not in their Family Pod.

400 The price or weight of Doritos aren't an issue for me since I haven't bought Doritos for years. Years ago they stopped selling plain Doritos (no flavorings) just the corn taste. I don't /didn't eat any other kind of Doritos.

But just this week, I glanced at the Dorito sections (something I don't usually do) and to my surprise, plain Doritos were in stock. They were in a retro design bag. I called Frito-Lays and they said they would be for sale only for 2 weeks. It was recommended that I buy as many bags as I could find. They have a use-by date of September. So I will get about 9-12 bags, currently $1.47 if 3 or more are purchased at Krogers.
