Sunday Morning Book Thread 07-04-2021

Vatican Apostolic Library 01 1600.jpg
Vatican Apostolic Library, Vatican City

Good morning to all you 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers, and lurkettes, wine moms, frat bros, crétins sans pantalon (who are technically breaking the rules). Welcome once again to the stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, a weekly compendium of reviews, observations, snark, witty repartee, hilarious bon mots, and a continuing conversation on books, reading, spending way too much money on books, writing books, and publishing books by escaped oafs and oafettes who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read. Unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these pants, and I'd totally take this little shaver to a barbecue at Gwen Berry's house just to see her lose her sh*.

Pic Note:

The Vatican Library has been around for awhile:

The Vatican Apostolic Library, better known simply as “VAT,” was officially established in 1475, although it is actually much older. Historians explain the Vatican Apostolic Library finds its origins in the earliest days of Christianity itself. In fact, some manuscripts from the first centuries of Christianity are (naturally) here preserved...

Nowadays, the Vatican Library treasures around 75000 codices, 85000 incunabula (i.e., editions made between the invention of the printing press and the 16th century), for a grand total of more than a million books.

The good news is that VAT is getting a digital facelift:

It was back in 2018 when Archbishop Jean-Louis Brugučs, then Prefect of the Vatican Library, announced the opening of the DigiVatLib, a shortening of digital Vatican Library. The Archbishop explained that around 2013 the Vatican Library began a vast undertaking to digitize the manuscripts belonging to its catalogue. Since then, the fruits of their labors can be enjoyed by anyone with internet access, at no charge.

You can search the library and download its archives just by clicking here.

Once the painstaking and minute process of scanning all the individual pages of each manuscript is complete, the work is compiled and uploaded to the DigiVatLib website. If the project is able to upload 3000 pieces per year, 80000 manuscripts should be fully scanned by 2041.

These things take time.

It Pays To Increase Your Word Power®

20210704 book pic 01.jpg

For a long time I have been looking for a word that would adequately describe this weird sense of unreality I have been feeling for the past several years. Like I am now living in clown world and everything I'm seeing, particularly from Washington DC, is being staged. The problem is, there's no way I can pelt the performers with rotting vegetables and eggs, like I could do at a bad play if I lived in the old days.

The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775 by John Trumbull

Independence

Ned Ryun is a conservative activist and author whose columns are posted on the American Greatness. And, according to his web page, Ned

...is the founder and CEO of American Majority, a non-partisan political training institute whose mission is to identify and mold the next wave of liberty-minded candidates, grassroots activists and community leaders...

Prior to launching American Majority, Ryun founded and directed Generation Joshua, a civics education program for middle and high school students that reached a membership of nearly 10,000.

So it's nice to know he's actually done stuff and not just suck up the grift. As an author, he's written a couple of books that are appropriate for today, meaning, Independence Day.

His first book is Restoring Our Republic: The Making of the Republic and How We Reclaim It Before It's Too Late. From the blurb, Ryan appears to know his Civics. The book

...examines the genesis for the ideas which inspired our constitutional republic, from the ancient Hebrews, Greeks and Romans to the English and their common law. Ryun also discusses the machinery of the republic built by the Founders meant to protect the rights of the American people and how that machinery has been dismantled by Progressives.

He traces the history of our country's founding and how the Founding Fathers studied the course of human history in crafting a form of government that would constrain the powers of the government and protect our God-given rights. Ned Ryun covers everything from the Birth of American Society, Rights Enumerated, to the necessary Civil Involvement to restore our great country. This book gave me a much greater appreciation for what we as Americans have been given. In the face of aggressive socialism, we must respond by returning to the values and principles our country was founded upon.

The Kindle edition of his book is $9.99.

Mr. Ryun has published his second book, a novel, a couple of weeks ago. The Adversaries: A Story of Boston and Bunker Hill. Ryun says it's about "principled defiance in the face of overpowering & arbitrary authoritarianism, which makes it a story for all time",

...a compelling reminder of what occurs when leaders abandon eternal principles and the rule of law for avarice and power, and a free people tells its government it will not allow its freedoms to be abused any longer. The Adversaries is the story of Dr. Joseph Warren and his American comrades who with inspiring courage and heartbreaking sacrifice spark the greatest endeavor in human history: the founding of the free American Republic.

I had forgotten who Dr. Warren was and his role in the Revolutionary War, so I betook myself to his wiki page:

Joseph Warren (June 11, 1741 – June 17, 1775) was an American physician who played a leading role in Patriot organizations in Boston during the early days of the American Revolution, eventually serving as President of the revolutionary Massachusetts Provincial Congress...Warren participated in the Battles of Lexington and Concord the following day, which are commonly considered to be the opening engagements of the American Revolutionary War.

Warren had been commissioned a major general in the colony's militia shortly before the June 17, 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill. Rather than exercising his rank, Warren chose to serve in the battle as a private soldier, and was killed in combat when British troops stormed the redoubt atop Breed's Hill. His death, immortalized in John Trumbull's painting, The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775, galvanized the rebel forces. He has been memorialized in the naming of many towns, counties, streets, and other locations in the United States, by statues, and in numerous other ways.

You have to admire these men who were willing to fight and die for what they believed in.

Who Dis:

who dis 20210704.jpg

(Last week's 'who dis' was Clark Gable and Marion Davies hiding out in a library in a publicity still from their 1936 movie Cain and Mabel.

It's About Time

I have been hoping for a long time that someone would do a film adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. And now it looks like I'm going to get my wish:

I read the books back when I was a teenager. We're talking ( *counts on fingers* ) 50 years ago, more or less. I guess Dr. A. came back a number of years later and wrote some more Foundation novels, but I haven't read those, just the original trilogy.

Is this adaptation going to be any good? The trailer certainly looks impressive, but who knows? It is being advertised as an "Apple Original" series. For what this is worth, Mrs. Muse and I are watching another Apple Original series, The Mosquito Coast, and we think it's quite good. So perhaps that's a good sign.

We'll just have to wait until the last week in September to find out for sure.

Moron Recommendations

Q: What did one progressive say to the other as they stood in the freezing snow in a Joe Biden holiday camp in Montana?

A: "Hey, remember when we used to laugh at the John Birchers?"

I am currently reading Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies.

The short version of this 663 page doorstop is: McCarthy was right. The FDR and Truman administrations were infested with Reds. McCarthy may well have underestimated the problem. Eleanor was sleeping with the communist Joe Lash and wheelchair-bound cuck Franklin was at least commie-curious. The mainstream media, led by the New York Times, were shameless communist propagandists, as bad as Pravda, Izvestia or TASS. They led the attacks on McCarthy to try to keep him from exposing the extent of the infiltration. The State Department was riddled with communists, but so were many other Federal agencies. The OSS, predecessor to the CIA, may have been even worse.

Posted by: cool breeze at April 11, 2021 09:45 AM (UGKMd)

The Amazon blurb for Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies is too long to reproduce here, so I'll cut to the chase: everything you know about Senator Joe McCarthy is wrong. Or, at least, everything you've been told about him is wrong. Or, even more pithily: McCarthy was right.

Evans’s revelations completely overturn our understanding of McCarthy, McCarthyism, and the Cold War. Drawing on primary sources—including never-before-published government records and FBI files, as well as recent research gleaned from Soviet archives and intercepted transmissions between Moscow spymasters and their agents in the United States—Evans presents irrefutable evidence of a relentless Communist drive to penetrate our government, influence its policies, and steal its secrets. Most shocking of all, he shows that U.S. officials supposedly guarding against this danger not only let it happen but actively covered up the penetration. All of this was precisely as Joe McCarthy contended.

Just like today, when pretty much everybody in politics turns out to be either a pervert or sex pest, back then, everybody was either an outright commie spy, lending the commies a helping hand, or cheering them on.

If you really want to get depressed, read the Evans book back-to-back with Diana West's book American Betrayal, which paints an even more dismal picture, if that is possible, of the commie rot in the federal government.

And it never stops. West's latest book, The Red Thread: A Search for Ideological Drivers Inside the Anti-Trump Conspiracy, a book which is

The first investigation into why a ring of senior Washington officials went rogue to derail the election and the presidency of Donald Trump. There was nothing normal about the 2016 presidential election, not when senior U.S. officials were turning the surveillance powers of the federal government—designed to stop terrorist attacks—against the Republican presidential team. These were the ruthless tactics of a Soviet-style police state, not a democratic republic. The Red Thread asks the simple question: Why? What is it that motivated these anti-Trump conspirators from inside and around the Obama administration and Clinton networks to depart so drastically from “politics as usual” to participate in a seditious effort to overturn an election?

Profiled: James Comey, Christopher Steele, Nellie Ohr, the rest of the Fusion GPS team; John Brennan, numerous Clintonistas and Obamistas. Verdict: Multi-generational, inter-connecting commie scum, every last one of them. The "Red Thread" is indeed very long.

The Kindle edition, by the way, is only $3.99.

Books By Morons

Bob Zimmerman, the blogger/author whom J.J. Sefton utilizes daily as his "intrepid science reporter" (also links daily to his latest installment of "Today's blacklisted American") in his Morning Report has written a new ebook on a very au courant topic, slavery.

Bob tells me:

I am sure Ace readers will find it illuminating. It definitely puts the lie to the NY Times 1619 Project.

The book is Conscious Choice: The origins of slavery in America and why it matters today and for our future in outer space. Space travel is Bob's specialty, so his history looks to the future as well as the past:

The human race is about to go to the stars. Big rockets are being built, and nations and private citizens worldwide are planning the first permanent settlements in space.

When we get there, will we know what to do to make those first colonies just and prosperous places for all humans?

Conscious Choice answers this question, by telling a riveting and accurate history of the first century of British settlement in North America. That was when those settlers were building their own new colonies, and had to decide whether to include slaves from Africa.

In New England slavery was vigorously rejected. The Puritans wanted nothing to do with this institution, desiring instead to form a society of free religious families, a society that became the foundation of the United States of American, dedicated to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

In Virginia however slavery was gladly embraced, resulting in a corrupt social order built on power, rule, and oppression.

Why the New England citizens were able to reject slavery, and Virginians were not, is the story that Conscious Choice tells, a story with direct implications for all human societies, whether they are here on Earth or on the farflung planets across the universe.

Available everywhere for $3.99 at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all ebook vendors. Or, if you do not want to give your money to the high-tech big box stores, you can can purchase it directly from Bob's ebook publisher here.

15 Thanks to OM for mentioning Us Against Them, the sequel to Bearstown, by Fredrick Backman. The book begins about two months after the conclusion of Bearstown, a small town in Sweden situated on a lake and surrounded by forest. The story is about the rebuilding of the town's hockey team. I like how Backman weaves in insights into his characters and captures small-town life. In the end a fortunate few will escape Bearstown. Some will leave and go on to promising careers; others only escape by death.

16 This week's reading selection is Tanith Lee's "The Secret Book of Paradys." It's a gothic version of Paris, with demons stalking the streets and the inhabitants suffering from madness and delusions. It's also strangely appropriate for Canadian PRIDE season because several of the characters are quite gender-fluid. In some cases they literally transition from male to female and vice-versa. In other instances, it's a cosmetic transition with strategic use of makeup and padding. But there is little to admire in her characters (other than they are excellently written). Their circumstances are often tragic and the characters engage in very morally questionable activities. Great stuff.

26 I have kind of a bad attitude about most of my friends, relatives and acquaintances who will suffer under the American Communists. "You asked for it.", or "Ya happy now?". Due to their "Trump says mean things.", or "I just don't know who to vote for." , or "I just don't want to sully my pure hands with dirty politics, so I'm just not going to vote at all." attitudes. They will reap what they have sown. But I'm mad that my family will suffer also. Probably before them because I can see most of them reporting us because of our wrong think. They'll get theirs. But I probably won't be around to enjoy it. Lord, forgive me for my unforgiveness.

So, to the future settlers of worlds beyond, I say:

Build your future civilizations with families, aimed at raising children. Provide your citizens the right to private property while favoring at the beginning relatively small holdings. Encourage individual responsibility, liberty of conscience, and freedom. And above all, infuse your colonies with moral commitment, the insistence that truth, justice, and the protection of individual human rights are essential components of any new social order.

58 The Foundation trailer looks interesting. Jared Harris as Hari Seldon should be excellent. But I don't know how you can really do a series based on an epic like Foundation. The scope of the world is simply so vast as to be nearly incomprehensible. That's kind of the point of the series. It's an attempt to mitigate the collapse of an Empire from 30,000 years to 1,000 years. How do you capture that in a TV show?

Nothing particularly fascinating.

Morrison's father, an admiral in the USN, was the commander in charge at the Gulf of Tonkin incident that deepened our involvement in Vietnam. Today it is widely believed that the incident was greatly exaggerated.

79 I keeping with the theme of the Vatican Library, I'll mention some Catholic books I've read since the last time I posted on the Book Thread:
1) God So Loved the World by Fr Robert Spitzer. Published in 2016. This is the 3rd book in his "Quartet" and explains Jesus Christ's revelations of God's plan for Mankind. Very good explanations of the the concept of agape' (unconditional love) and the Kingdom of God. Highly recommended: rating = 5.0/5. (Has imprimatur)

2) Saints and Sinners by Msgr James Murphy. Published in 2019, it is a brief telling of the Cristero War in Mexico in the 1920s. Not a strict chronological record, he explains the personalities of some of the most important participants in that war. He quotes some of the old books that are pretty obscure now. Very informative and fairly even-handed (he criticizes some of the Mexican bishops besides the Mexican politicians) attempt of the socialist government to eliminate religion. Rating = 4.5/5

80 RE: Foundation as a TV show...Although I admire the ambition of the showrunners, I suspect it will probably fall short of the mark for the same reason a complete Dune cycle series would. Epic science fiction (Foundation, Lensman, Dune, Ender Saga, etc.) tends to take place over vast time spans, often thousands of years. It simply doesn't lend itself well to a visual medium like movies or television as the scope of the story extends well beyond what movies and television are suited for.

93 As I'm finishing up my book on Guy Burgess and the Cambridge spy ring, I came across a quotation from a Spectator article written by Henry Fairlie in 1955 that the author included to explain why the security authorities missed so many clues. Seems so relevant to today, nearly 70 years later:

"What I call the 'Establishment' in this country is today more powerful than ever before. By the 'Establishment' I do not mean only the centres of official power- though they are certainly part of it- but rather the whole matrix of official and social relations within which power is exercised...No one whose job it was to be interested in the Burgess-McLean affair from the very beginning will forget the subtle but powerful pressures which were brought to bear by those who belonged to the same stratum as the two missing men."

The author aptly summarizes the quote: "In short, how Britain's elite were still interconnected and protecting their own."

Many of his works can be seen as taking place at different times within the same 'Verse. It's a pretty interesting exercise in consistent world building. I think R. Daneel Olivaw is an attempt to canon-weld the Foundation Series to his Robot Series and other works, to give an over-arching connection between all of these stories.

98 They say beware of the expert in more than one field and Asimov was certainly that. In addition to all his fiction, he wrote numerous books on science, history, and everything else under the sun. His Shakespeare book really changed my understanding of Hamlet. His book on the Bible may be blasphemous and infuriating (he says Jesus was the most successful paranoid schizophrenic in history) but he does put biblical times in historical context. His books on biology, astronomy etc. are outdated now (turns out, get this, the science wasn't settled) but all are informative and fun to read in part because of his sarcastic wit.

99 I've said before, the first book of Warhammer Horus Heresy does what Foundation did, but better.

Foundation (I've only read the first one) is very good.

Is it woke? It shows the empire as being fascist (OH NO scary muscular statue) but maybe that's the trailer. The empire, like the Roman empire, is neither cruel nor kind. It hugely raised the standard of living for everyone in it and provided opportunities for many to be more than just farmers.

Woke stories are full of characters without an ounce of admirable qualities. There are more elements that I admire about a human disaster like Walter White than the entire cast of non-80s Star Wars. If the character is well written, politics won't come up.

All they needed to do was to show the trial of Gaal Dornick and Hari Seldon as written. Other than displaying Trantor, there need not be any great visuals, no explosions. Then the next episode moves to Terminus with the Encyclodedia Galactica and Salvor Hardin.

The book is MADE to be serialized, yet they totally screwed it up and completely missed the point. Psychohistory is the star. What a disappointment.

Caves of Steel is a great novel: starts out as a detective story and then sort of goes into a different track discussing what it is that makes us human.

126 Strangely, a Foundation series is somewhat appropriate given the times we are living in now. Foundation was written as a science fiction version of Edward Gibbons' "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire." We are currently witnessing the decline and fall of the American Empire (not that America was a true empire in the classic sense).

127 So I can't do that to the Horde. Maybe no one cares, it is no big thing. But in the last thread I asked about a video of an Irish American singer who did a salute to the military. I asked people to watch it and tell me what stood out. I used to see the guy in pubs, he was pretty well known. I asked what about this video was clear to you. or what about it was unlike the rest? I said it was easy, as in, if you watch it, the answer would stand out.
So this guy ripped the Marines for ten minutes, he made fun of them for fun and nothing else. His set was respect for all the services, that was his thing. "He was very pro military and that worked damn well anywhere you have an Irish pub.
But if you watch the set, while he respects everyone for sure, that is the entire point. He only plays one hymn straight. It is the Marines's Hymn. If you ever see him live it stands out. The Marines and former Marines in the audience snap to attention, to them is is the same as saluting the flag. Anyway, that was my big trivia question. No biggie there. Salute to all services.

His hat by the open flame is about to catch fire. When he realizes this he will flail backwards with his left arm, knocking over the candle. The hot candle wax will spill down the back of his pants. Leaping to his feet he will scatter the children across the room and as he dances in pain from the melted paraffin he will step squarely on not just one, but both of the toy houses in his stocking feet. The ensuing blood-curdling scream and the house fire will haunt his children's dreams if they ever do manage to have a good night's sleep again. Happily ever after, yada yada.

Yes. I'm generally an optimistic sort, why do you ask?

agreed. they have spread graffiti all over Pere Lachaise for decades. I liked the fist album but never understood why they did that. Much more famous people, and regular people have had their stones vandalized for no good reason. Not that there can ever be a good reason. But the Doors were kids, they didn't know a thing. Some good music yes, but deep truths?, the opposite is the case.

Curious that a century ago, socialists were attempting to sexualize children even back then (or not, since I've come to the conclusion that Collectivism as a governmental form is Satanically-inspired).

Posted by: Huck Follywood at July 04, 2021 08:47 AM (OOwtX)

-------------------------

Absolutely. One of the key aspects of psychohistory is that the people being studied are unaware of the analysis being done on them. So the hundred thousand members of the Encyclopedia Foundation who are sent to Terminus cannot be aware of Seldon's analysis and there is only one psychologist sent to the planet, and he carefully never trains a successor. So you can't have a massive number of revolutionary followers. The establishment of the Foundation is totally peaceful in the book, with merely a hint of underlying tension among the members of the Committee of Public Safety. By the way, at the time of the establishment of the Foundation, the Emperor is a weak figurehead!

An additional annoying snippet is the claim that the Emperor is from a long and continuous genetic line. This is nonsense given the many statements in the book about generals often succeeding to the imperial purple, just like in the Roman Empire. I think this is a sop to Dune and to Clarke's Imperial Earth. It has absolutely nothing to do with Foundation. Yuck.

In the concert I saw, The Doors played a short set, with no encores. I thought JM seemed angry, for some unknown reason.

179 I've been reading The Eagle and the Dragon by Lewis F McIntyre, a novel about an ancient Roman diplomatic mission to China during the reign of the Emperor Trajan. They set out from Alexandria and visit many of the famous sites including the Library and the Lighthouse at Pharos.

In the X-Box game Assassin's Creed: Origins, there is a Discovery option that allows you to freely wander about the map with historical tours available so you understand what you're seeing. I was able to take the characters' journey from along the coast road into the city to the Library and out to Pharos. The AC team admit that their Library is based on one in Ephesus rather than Alexandria's because of a lack of a detailed description of Alexandria's Library. Also the book describes quays for the Roman Navy out on Pharos while AC places them to the south of the great harbor. Still, the book is set a century or more after the game so maybe they were built later. Anyway, I thought it was immersive and cool.

215 Am about a third of the way through Abigail, an earlier book by Magda Szabo. This is a very different book from The Door in that it takes place when the protagonist is a young girl in Hungary during WW2 who is kind of bratty to everyone around her because she's upset at her father for sending her away to boarding school against her wishes. Unknown to her he's urging dissension by all as the only way to counteract rhe disastrous progress of the war. Since this is told from the istandpoint of a young girl, it's difficult for the reader to know anything in detail as far as the big picture. With that as a caveat it's a pretty interesting, albeit confusing, read.

Unfortunately for that theory, there is now a mountain of evidence for major European engineering work on the island from as early as the 13th century up to the mid 18th century, long before the "hoax". I don't abandon them but it has been a while. The one thing I have learned is they are generally as dense as fence posts. They are hired for their speaking voices and nothing else. You would think they would take a moment to learn a few things as these audios go into posterity. But they do not. i have listened to too many stock market books discussing Warren "bufaye" to take them seriously.

I have listened to too many Gettsyburg history books that mention General "Heth" when it is pronounced Heeth. It is about the 49th time it is said that it starts to grate. Look, I am not out to bash others like most do. But if someone ever gave me the honor of narrating a non fiction book, I would hope I would at least try to get the names right.

242 post 175 redux:

I read a short bio of Jim Morrison once. Took maybe an hour and a half. Here's some interesting trivia:

1) Jim's father was an Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Jim was related to Samuel Eliot Morrison.

2) Jim had a perfectly good cinematography degree from UCLA, which he never used, much to his parents' frustration. Prior to The Doors, Jim never sang in his life. His parents were extremely skeptical that he could ever support himself singing.

3) Jim died intestate. (surprised?) His wife Patti Courson inherited the rights to publish Jim's poetry, as well as his future music royalties. Patti died of a heroin OD a few months after Jim died. She also died intestate. (surprised?) So everything Jim Morrison had went to Patti's parents-- whom Jim always disliked.

244 As with all "epic" productions, this upcoming Apple evisceration of 'Foundation' will be epic in and of itself. Sure, they have familiar names stapled to unrecognizable characters, Oh-so-subtle casting choices (insert sound of piano crashing to earth *here*), profoundly stupid writers bloating up the tight outline that Asimov left them with useless and goofy things that matter not one whit to the original tale, and design and layout choices that ignore the vast scope of what was originally portrayed. It will be a dumb mess, with the important elements lost in the mess sloshing about the unrecognizable characters feet.

In short, it's gonna suck donkey balls. If you read the books, and enjoyed them, you'd be better off going out to your workshop and hitting your fingers with a hammer for two hours than watching what will be shoveled out at you.

289 Eh, people oughta know by now that movies aren't books.

Movies are a purely visual medium, so they're going to show you the collapse - ie. 'splodey stuff and panicky crowds and zoom zoom zoom pew pew pew!!!

It's like with David Lynch's "DUNE". It's a remarkable shoehorning of a complex novel into a standard movie format. I think it's pretty great. Most fans of the novel hate it cuz it's not exactly the novel. Well, duh.

Same same with "Foundation".

The really important thing here is will Apple's "Foundation" have lots of sex and quality boobage and follow the "Game of Thrones" guidebook with lots of random murders of major characters. That's success, baby!

291 RE: Morrison as "irresponsible nihilistic hedonist who lived a suicidal lifestyle":

Incomplete; oversimplified; not the full picture. Whoever posted that must've seen the cartoonish Oliver Stone film, I suspect.

Ray Manzerak, who knew Morrison better than probably anyone, said he disliked Stone's film because it ignored Jim's prodigious talents and sense of humor.

Without Ray Manzerak on keyboards, there would've been no Doors, no Light My Fire.

302 Jumping into the who dis discussion; Jim Morrison was the most overrated member of the group. Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore were all great but Morrison was a self-important drunk, mediocre singer, third rate poet and (with a few exceptions) third rate lyricist. IMHO. I must be truly getting settled into my new digs because I had the time yesterday to dip back into The Portable Faulkner. He certainly earned his spot in the pantheon.

313 Slowly working my way through Book 4 of the Buried Goddess Saga. (Slowly, because I'm only reading it at the park, and I can only get to the park every couple of days.) Its a fairly standard fantasy epic, with each chapter switching to a new character's perspective. Mostly good. But the problem with book 4 is that they've introduced a new character who I really don't like, and I'm rooting for her (and her side) to fail. Its very easy to close the book and go home whenever I get to another of her chapters...

----------------------

I've got to disagree. At least Lynch's Dune got the major themes right. He only screwed up of the technology in the 2nd half and increased the Sting character a bit out of proportion. That and the occasional unintended hysterical line (e.g., I am the Shadout Mapes, the housekeeper; Because he IS the Kwisatz Hadderach!). Dune's visual, almost steampunk, art design was perfect. The first half of the movie was terrific, the second half only so so. Overall, it was a good effort.

This trailer shows that the miniseries might be called Foundation, but will have absolutely no resemblance to the Asimov trilogy.

they are actually pretty smart if not morbid. I recall anyone who dies in Paris can be buried there. But it is a very old city and the cemetaries are cramped. I recall for hundreds of years you had to have someone visit your grave or it was put on a clock. If no one visited it for a certain amount of years, it could be dug up and replaced by someone else. Wealthy people, would pay to have a mourner come by now and then. Yes it is morbid, but it is a very old city.

360 I read War & Peace last year. It's not a "hard book." The story is pretty simple, Tolstoy comes out and tells you what everyone is thinking and what their motivations are. The only tricky bit is the names, but if you pay attention that's not a huge problem. The plot, such as it is, is mostly an excuse to put Pierre or some other viewpoint character into the main battles of Napoleon's invasion of Russia.

Old Town Alexandria in VA is uber lefty. It is uber rich too but also uber lefty. These rich people not from Virginia parade these old homes, these historic homes put on the historic register. Go there any time, not just on holidays, but any time. Almost every home has an American flag, and many use the Betsy Ross Flag or the Colonial American flag. To be honest, as someone who knows the place, I think it is kind of an in joke. Not everything is what it looks like.

378 The whole "throwing rotten fruits and vegetables" thing has always left me scratching my head. What happened if it was a *good* play? They just said, "Oh well, guess we'll just toss these rotten fruits and vegetables out on the way home?"

Getting ready for a night at the theater: "OK honey, the babysitter's here, we're all dressed up...oh, drat, where are the rotten fruits and vegetables? We're all out? Better go borrow some from the neighbors!"

A whole theater full of people holding bags of rotten fruits and vegetables must have smelled wonderful.

387 The "pelting with rotten fruit" was part of the institution of the "clacque." Basically they were tough guys who would run a protection racket on the theater managers and/or performers. Bribe them well and you get cheers, standing ovations, and beating up critics. Fail to bribe them and you get catcalls, whistles, and thrown fruit. Inevitably, rival actors or theater companies would start counter-bribing them.

Posted by: Trimegistus at July 04, 2021 10:32 AM (QZxDR)

388 I've used the kayfabe metaphor a lot over the years. I think it's even better than the Globetrotters one. The Globetrotters/Generals rivalry is sort of a one-off thing, done over and over again the same way. But kayfabe is broader - it's the way a whole industry works, with thousands of players and a whole, big fat book of theatrical legerdemain and parlor tricks. Moreover, in pro-Wrestling the whole kayfabe thing is part of the relationship between the actors, who a lot of times are really best buds behind the camera.

Kayfabe is really the best comparison for the US' elected government... But in the WWE, the writing and acting is much more believable.

there were some pretty big celebrations in East Texas. They were community get togethers. What it is now is something very different. I think it has become less Texan over the years and now for sure it is not a Texan event.

Who knows what will be next. My guess for several years has been The Alamo. I would watch that one and try like Hell to at least preserve what it used to be. Even that is too late, no way it was like it was in the 70s and 80s. I don't think the same people curate the place, and that is no accident. My suggestion is to try to keep it at least where it is today, historically.

And we're on the punitive side of reception, and for nothing more than wanting what's best freedom and economically and security wise for our fellow Americans that we love.

We're headed nowhere good.

This is a loaded question. Forgiveness is not a blanket amnesty. If you forgive someone for hitting you in the face and they continue to hit you, are you obligated to continue forgiving? Maybe part of the act of forgiveness includes calling out the transgression and putting an end to it (either through the contrition of the transgressor or the concerted action of the transgressed). I forgive you for stealing my silverware and I'm putting a lock on the dining room hutch.

My point about serialization was that the Trilogy is episodic in nature and would be easy to serialize. Yes I understand that it is a serial. They have no excuse for screwing it up to this degree.

There are enough tells in the trailer that make it obvious that it will be a mess. They invent some goofy genetic story for the Emperor. Seldon has a legion of "followers" when the book suggests only a handful of people "in the know". There's a revolution planned and the visuals suggest it's on Trantor, but the only "revolt" mentioned is Anacreon (no nuclear power). The original Encyclopedists knew nothing about their manifest destiny. Need I go on?

Sure. But for me, the idea greatly stimulated my already significant interest in mathematics. It's sad that the social sciences haven't progressed much in terms of rigor since the late 40's when Asimov started the Trilogy. Nothing like the Seldon Functions have been invented, I'm afraid. Maybe that's a good thing. Otherwise ... wait a minute, I just noticed a glitch in the Matrix.

And I'd say that you are distinctly in the minority in terms of the fan base. It's clear that Star Wars was heavily influenced by Foundation, although the former is about the fall of the Roman Republic, and the latter the fall of the Roman Empire.

I did. Not to be argumentative, I thought the movie was excellent for cinema but not "better." Serling made excisions and compressions and changes that made sense from a cinematic point of view. But that just made it a different thing. The book had its own complexity and integrity I fully enjoyed.

That would tough to prove because the speech the quote is lifted from was given in the 2008-2009 time frame, before Antifa and BLM existed.

Also, he specifically mentions the Peace Corps and something called the USA Freedom Corps, which may be one of his projects that never got implemented. It's a dumb speech about replacing 'hard' power with the 'soft' power of social assistance, not replacing the existing hard power with a more brutal hard power.

The good news is I am past caring, the bad news is so is almost everyone else.

Posted by: sven at July 04, 2021 04:42 PM (Lzpvj)

502 Not only is the Foundation trilogy a series, the books were first written as a series of stories (8 according to the wiki, that's probably correct and I can't independently check as I don't presently have access to my copies of the magazines) written to order (sort of) and published by John Campbell in Astounding Science Fiction in the 1940s.

As for psychohistory; science fiction for a long time (and perhaps today; I don't know as I read very little of what passes as science fiction nowadays) was very trendy-it would go though cycles of writers writing about similar ideas and concepts (for a long time John Campbell partly drove this)-inasmuch as very many of the writers in the 1930s through the 60s or 70s knew each other quite well, it's not too surprising they were reading many of there same books and following the same intellectual and scientific fads. The idea of developing a more scientific social "science" was a popular one for quite a while. I suspect it was due in part to the popularity of Korzybski's theory of general semantics-Bob Heinlein was both a fan and a proselytizer for the theory.
