Saturday Morning Coffee Break

Coffee1 (1).jpg

(H/T Hoplite Housewife)

***

The price of coffee around the world.

***

Somethings are just wrong!

Coffee: it helps the world go round. From gamers to truck drivers to mechanics to surgeons, this caffeine-rich drink gives us humans the quick boost in energy we need to get on with our day. The U.S. military also relies on this humble hot drink to keep its troops going, along with a few cans of energy drinks, but that might be changing.

It may not be long until you give this habit up though, as a NASA-funded study by the Air Force Research Lab has investigated whether caffeine drinks can be replaced with an electric shock to the brain.

The study used brain stimulation instead of coffee
The study was carried out on 40 active-duty military personnel from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The goal was to test and examine the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Cervical Vagus Nerve Stimulation in helping to treat powerful migraines and the impacts of sleeplessness.

***

Hopefully you are enjoying a long weekend.

10 Gonna buy me one of those body cam gizmos. Almost got killed by a crazy a$$ bitch this morning when we were walking the dogs. Saw her coming up the road and we got off the road (no side walks here) and stopped until she went by. As she got closer to us she veered right at us and I thought she was going to hit us. I started reaching for my gun to dump the magazine into her face but she straightened up and drove past us. The wife said she was waving at us but to me it looked like she was giving us the finger.

Stimulation of the Vagus nerve is used now to reduce symptoms of clinical depression. The use is limited because the stimulation can also affect ability to swallow and speak, and possibly affect breathing.
A biomedical researcher mentioned in a podcast recently that the vagus nerve stimulation might have been a rational choice, but most likely tried because it was possible.

I wonder at the ethics of biomedical research at times.

******

In my hometown, with a healthy representation of over 29-year-olds, a 4-way stop goes like this:

All four drivers stop. All four gesture for the person on their left to "go ahead". All four start to proceed at the same time, then stomp on the brakes. All four get out of their vehicles and meet in the center of the intersection and do a double elimination round robin series of "Rock-Paper-Scissors" to determine who will proceed first. They then exchange pictures of the grandkids before returning to their vehicles where all four start to proceed at the same time...

152 Story time:
I was discharged from June 16 after six weeks on job for reasons unknown. Before then, had been unemployed for a year. Obviously I'm thinking, "Will it take another year?"

Demoralizing. Debilitating. Depressing.

All my friends: "Trust the Lord. We're praying for you." One even went so far as to invoke "the God of Abraham," and I quip, "feels like the God of Job."

Years ago, when I was contemplating finishing my undergrad, I happened upon a tiny, private university that had an interesting course catalog. I took a tour. Met the admissions / recruiter and was told all about the summer internships at places that matter in the field. I was told, virtually guaranteed, that could and would be me. So I made a goal for myself that would be me and worked my proverbial ass off (3.85 GPA. I'd transferred in with a 2.20).

Well, I didn't get the cool job at the company in question and over the years, I'd forgotten about that goal. Until one day....

He included some people I loved like Don Williams. He also through in some guys like the guy that did Copper Head Road.

The funny thing is that tape is over 25 years old and still sounds like glass. My buddy was from Alpine, about the most Texas place someone could be from. He passed away too early. I wish he was back so we could listen to some Jerry Jeff Walker. When he gave me that tape I had pretty much never thought of London. Since then, i have spend more time there than any other place that was not my legit home. Whenever I think of that song, I think of that guy. A good friend lost too soon.

Terrible!

A few weeks ago in early afternoon, driving back from a nearby open space wher I walked the dog , street was stopped in both directions for what I assumed was road work. Noe, when I got up to the trouble spot, saw that it was a father and tween daughter who had been herding a yuge snapping turtle across the street.

We also get turkeys in the road all the time, and people always stop.
