Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. I appreciate Mr. Sefton filling in last week. Your humble Cob was on vacation and no where near a computer.

So kick back and relax and let us jump into the world of animals.

So proud of her prowess, now rethinking.
I think Olive will not be hunting butterflies ever again.
Great photo courtesy of my daughter who saw the whole adventure! - Keena

The look on Olive's face is priceless. She seems very proud yet shy of her great prowess. Thanks for your contribution today.

Dear Ace of Spades Pet Thread,

Longtime Ace of Spades HQ lurker and once in a blue moon commenter (ptleahy) and I have supplied you with a photograph of our Standard Poodle, Big Poodle in the past; however, I need to share a photo of Lowbacca, our Chi-Weenie. She is the queen of the empire and she bosses everyone around. She enjoys sleeping late, peeing in the house when it is too cold outside, and lounging in the sunlight when it is warm outside. We didn't name her and yes the name is from the cousin of the Chewbacca. We call her Lowbi. Thanks for what you do each week and I always look forward to the World Famous Pet Thread.

Well ptleahy thank you so much for your submission and kind words today. Lowbacca certainly does have the appearance of royalty about her. She certainly seems loved. Thanks.

Merlin at Home.jpg

Hello Ms Hum. We lost our old guy, KJ, April 7th, have been missing him like crazy and just could not handle the silence of a dogless home. We thought we'd wait until end of Summer to look for another dog but a friend has 2 English Labs that had a big litter. So yesterday, we brought home Merlin. He's adapting really fast and is a hoot. Haven't had a little pup for a while, so interesting times ahead. - Russkilitlover.

First, condolences on your loss of KJ. It is never easy to lose a pet. Secondly congrats on the new addition. It looks like before he matures Merlin will give you a run for your money. Thanks for sharing.

Hello,

Love your blog.

Last year, the smaller dog Mudd, eight years old, decided she wanted her bed back. Slush, two years old, was sitting in the sun, resting comfortably. Well, as comfortable as a 70 lb dog can be in the bed made for an 18 lb dog. Mutt basically honed in, tricked him to get out of the bed, then took over and refused to leave in spite of Slush’s efforts. Hope you enjoy, feel free to use as desired. - JML

I bet those two are quite entertaining together. I get the feeling that Mudd is quite the leader of the pack. Thanks for the love and sharing your puppehs with us.

Hello,
This is Shadow, our newly adopted 4yr old German Shepherd. He was too much for his original family with small children whom he would knock down accidentally when playing. My wife and I lost our Shepherd to cancer late last year, and missed our 4 legged family member! He fell in the pool the first half hour at his new home, and since then he barks at anyone getting near the pool edge. He appears to have adjusted to his new home and life, my wife and I are much calmer than his previous home. We always enjoy the Saturday Pet feature, and Thanks for all you do for the blog! - K J

Looks like Shadow is at home next to the "cement pond". Nice looking pooch and so happy to hear that he landed at your home. It's nice to have a 4 legged family member! We appreciate your contribution today.

Hi Mis Hum, these pics loaded with a mind of their own, not in the order I was aiming for. First up is Sarah, a 6 year old Black Lab/ Pit Bull mix. She wandered up to our house in the wilds of Western Oklahoma when she was about a year old, and stayed. Always happy, born snuggle buddy. #2 is Clara, a 10 year old Australian Shepherd/Black Lab mix. Sweetest dog that ever lived, and uber-enthusiastic about bacon. She’s had both knees rebuilt, so she has slowed down quite a bit. #3 is a pic is of our Schnauzers, Callie and Maggie. Believe it or not, they were half sisters. Callie was 15 last year. She had a bad mitral valve and collapsing trachea, which we medicated for years. When she stopped eating right before the Covid hysteria kicked off, we let her go. It nearly killed me. Maggie is fifteen this year, and but for some arthritis, still going strong. My constant companion. Loves to eat June bugs and grasshoppers. Last but not least is Emma, our 8 year old Boxer and my wife’s personal bodyguard. LOVES the grandkids, is obsessed with cats. Hates electrical storms. The dogs sleep in the bed with us at night, so we don’t get cold in winter. - Pete & Susie

My goodness what a large crew you have there! Really sorry to hear about the loss of your Callie. Schnauzers have a special place in my heart. Good luck with the crew and thanks for sharing with us.

It's kitten time in East Texas...hubs and I moved back to Texas last May and have been busy settling into a new house way out in East Texas where we are happily surrounded by cattle and horse ranches and more trees than you can stir with a stick.

It is the perfect place for two rescued little girls to make their kingdom and reign over peasant field mice and churly lizards. All Hail the Princesses Thelma and Louise, just barely 8 weeks old...They are pictured just 36 hours after settling into their temporary crate while the next month or so will see them socialized, chubbed up, vaccinated and ready for their coronation.

Pretty cute, eh? (Photo 1)

After just 3 days of settling in, they look a bit more confident. I have it on good authority they come from serious mouser stock.(Photo 2) - Susan

Darn right they are cute!!! Congrats on your new home and your new kittehs. They certainly are cute and sound like they will have a great life in East Texas.

Zander-2 (1).jpg

We lost Zander, our senior dog, on Thursday after a few months of fairly steady decline. He was 16, which is quite old for a Brittany I'm told, but he'd been starting to show signs of dementia toward the end. Our vet prescribed a drug that seemed to help him -- I called them his "dried frog pills" -- so he was still able to join the girls on the occasional squirrel or rabbit chase in our backyard, although he'd often lose the trail quickly.

He suffered a major stroke yesterday morning and was unable to get up. We got him to the vet as soon as the office opened and the vet gave him a quick exam and told us he probably only had a few hours left. She euthanized him on the front lawn and he died in my son's arms peacefully. - NR

Condolences to you and your family on the loss of Zander. He was a handsome fellow and lived a wonderful life with your family. Once again, so sorry for your loss.

Bogie got a bee sting on Thursday evening walk. I had to call my husband to drive us home as he was in such a state. I removed the stinger and gave him some Benadryl. The swelling is gone and he's himself again, but what a wild thing he was. Poor baby. It's pavement walking for him.

Ah, the memories of when our fourth Lab got sprayed. She also got revenge and killed the skunk although it took about an hour (and probably more sprays in the process). Spent some extended bonding time in the shower with her as she endured a baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mixture to strip the awful smell from her coat. She was fine after that and luckily no more skunk encounters.

43 We babysat a good friend's dog while he went out of town for a week. We were a bit concerned about how our two cats would take to him.

One day we caught Guest Dog dragging his butt across the NEW carpet. Ugh. Minor problem, easily fixed. Right? Oh no, he taught the cats to drag their butts across the new carpet too.

Yay.

44 Sorry for those of you that recently lost pets. I hope sometime, you can welcome a new one.

I took the dogs on a long road trip last weekend. Had great fun and am ready to do an overnighter somewhere. Old dog actually did pretty well.

Monday Young Dog was in some pain and I wasn't sure of the cause. My vet managed to work him in to check. He has a very enlarged prostate gland. So Tuesday, I had him neutered. Wanted to let him heal a little before the extreme heat hit this weekend. He seems to be healing really well.

45 "So proud of her prowess, now rethinking."

Our fav cat's days were numbered and she wouldn't eat anything (she lived a long live, so it was okay). But I didn't want her to starve.

On night out on the deck, completely by accident, I discovered that she enjoyed eating grasshoppers (the big green ones) and would keep them down. I figured grasshoppers gave her some source of nutrition too, so every night for the next 6 months I was walking around the outsides of my neighbors townhomes, collecting grasshoppers. Usually managed about 3-4 grasshoppers per night.

This is that part in the movie where I bump into Julia Roberts and tell her my story, and she finds it SO endearing that she invites me in to share a bottle of wine with her naked in her hot tub.

But that never happened. I was just lucky someone didn't shoot me. Which I'll take as a win.

46 Oh no, he taught the cats to drag their butts across the new carpet too.

LMAO!! Usually if a dog drags their butt across the carpet they need their anal glands expressed. Daughter has to take Moose at least once a month. She won't do it herself lol.

47 "Usually if a dog drags their butt across the carpet they need their anal glands expressed"

Yah, my wife's father's sister(?) is a vet, and we moved up here she let me work as a vet tech (and trained me). Learned a lot about cats and dogs. Expressing their anal glands for them was not fun, as you would imagine.

It was really hard though when dogs you had gotten attached to over the year were brought in to be euthanized. I couldn't be a vet.

Posted by: Infidel at June 26, 2021 03:19 PM (dYrVA)

49 When I was a kid we had a German Shepherd that would run around and around the pool when we were in it and sometimes fall in. He'd make a lap or two and get out and start running around the pool again.

Posted by: f'd at June 26, 2021 03:19 PM (Tnijr)

50 Jewells,
Not necessarily. I thought that was the problem with the young dog but it was the prostate. Can set it when an unneutered dog is between 6-8 years. Untreated, it can lead to problems peeing and pooping. Jake was sitting hunched up and yelped when he tried to jump up on the couch. That's when I knew something was wrong.

Posted by: Notsothoreau - look forward at June 26, 2021 03:20 PM (YynYJ)

You see, it wasn't easy breeding a poodle with a rooster but now, even you, if you fork over enough $$$ can own a...

cockadoodle.

74 64 Whomever suggested that I add a bit of beef broth to my dog's urinary care diet food, it worked like a charm. She hasn't missed a meal since.

They are somewhat catlike in my experience. They love to preen, lie belly up, and rub against you. We liked to call them "self-petting dogs" as they'd walk back and forth across your legs or if you put a hand out for them.
My first one was a great bird and mouse hunter. My neighbor, who loved large dogs, called them "cats with a bark"

Posted by: CN at June 26, 2021 03:45 PM (ONvIw)

79 Sometimes he'd call them "foxines", because of their color and pointy ears.

Posted by: CN at June 26, 2021 03:48 PM (ONvIw)

80 So, some dogs are hunters, some are retrievers, some are herders...

What does a
cockadoodle do?

82 Pet sitting neihbor kitty, 'Penny'. Petite little 5 pounder grey striped bush dwelling ambush predator. She goes out in the mornings, eats her breakfast on the front step while getting a ration of lovin', then spends the day biting heads from off of hapless rodents. Squirrel, chipmunk, mice. All are to be hunted and killed.

Afternoons, she naps on our porch, substitutes her diet with MegaRoy's leftovers, and then plunders throuh the woodes behind our house. She's taken to boinding up to me, squeaking for attention, when she sees me outside lately.

I'll see if i can get a photo of the step-kitry and post it for a future pet thread.

89 German Klein Spitz!

A dog that barks in German, and doesn't spit. I could see why you'd want one.

Funneh story. When Dad was going throuh Milsap's for his masters in theology, german was one of the languages he had to pass a proficiency test on. He used to command my GSD, Smokey, in Hoch Deutsch. Remember, early 60's, germans were still bad guys.

One day, dog followed me to church, dad had to take him back home. Opened the tailgate of the truck and commanded, 'inns vagon'. Dog jumps in the truck. Blue haired church lady "preacher, i didn't know your dog spoke german". Dad, without missing a beat, "he is a German Shepard, won't speak a word of English just to spite us".

Blue hair, knew that dog came from the kennel pens at Angola State Penitentury, the master dog handler was a church member and gave me Smokey for my 2nd birthday. Still funneh to this day and also a key indicator of why we had to move to a new church every three or four years.

Posted by: BifBewalski - at June 26, 2021 04:02 PM (VcFUs)

90 Heh, BifBewalski. And did not know Angola had or has kennel pens.

91 A friend did obtain doggie from Prison Pals, a program wherein apparently convicts are trained to train dogs. His is a very mellow, sweet and large hound.

Posted by: LadyS at June 26, 2021 04:07 PM (b88US)

92 Hi LadyS, way way back they did. Late 50s early 60s. Of course, I was like 2 then and am only repeating what i was told about Smokey's origins, so you may well be correct. I do know we were too poor to seek out a full blood dog like he was back then though.

Posted by: BifBewalski - at June 26, 2021 04:17 PM (VcFUs)

93 Just came back from the beach.
So nice to see so many faces again. Still a mask here and there.
So many doggos! And they are such big dopes playing fetch in the salt water. And it's a natural flea repellent!

Love, peace and comfort to all those who have lost fur friends.

Smooches.

Was your dad a minister or did he teach theology?
Did the church members care that the dog came from a prison training program?

All except one of the lady preachers I have met have the normal color of hair, (My hair is mostly grey. I don't even color it the share it used to be) but maybe I should dye it blue if I ever get to a moron meet up so I can meet the expectations of some of those gathered.

Fenelon, my hair came back WHITE after chemo. I was 47. Still don't want to color it. The chemicals used don't excite me. So, I look like I'm 70 when I'm 54. Oh well.

Hi Fen,

He was a minister in the united methodist church, as was his father before him, until the church fired him for being olde school and not toeing the line of lefty bs. His last church in Beouf Prairie, LA, ( Dropped pin
https://maps.app.goo.gl/ Hbs5HEH5Phqc4hHk8 ) still has him preaching to them after they split out from the lefty bs as well.

Chemo does weird stuff.

Friend of mine had hip-length light/medium blonde hair before chemo. Had to cut inches off several times a year to keep it "that short".

After? It turned medium brown and grew only couple of inches per year.

108 LadyS - One of the reasons James Lee Burke's novels are so authentic is because he lived what he writes about for many decades. I'm from the same area as he is and it's always a kick for me to instantly recognize the place he's describing .....like the visitors center at Whiskey Bay off of I-10 where the good guys and the bad guys have a wild-west type shootout.

He was writer in residence at ULL in Lafayette way back when (go Ragin Cajuns!) and has recently built a very nice home on the banks of the Bayou Teche in Jeanerette LA. He also has, from what I hear, a spread in the Bitterroot Mountains outside of Missoula Montana.

It has been a few years, but last I heard from the locals he still spends time in the Lafayette/New Iberia area, at that same cafe on Main St/New Iberia he mentions often. He's been known to pop into Books on the Teche, the little mom and pop bookstore on Main St. in New Iberia right down from the cafe, to do book signings.

I've had a few of my books signed there and the first time I met him I was taken aback. He had huge burly guards standing behind him and was quite brusque to his fans. Nevertheless, I enjoy his books immensely. Glad you do too!

109 Hi, Biff

I am glad that your father is still able to preach. The Global Methodist Church has been formed. I expect there will be split as of the next Conference as the GMC is more conservative, traditional and wants to be spirit led.
