Portland Tourism Companies Take Out Full-Page Ad in NYT, Praising the City for the "Edge" Its Constant Riots Give It

Riot Tourism.

Which is, of course, Portland's chief export -- sending seasoned, pampered violent revolutionaries to other towns to riot and burn.

Tourism bosses in Portland have taken out a full-page advert in the New York Times admitting the riot-hit city has an 'edge' - but urging visitors to come anyway.

Travel Portland - a nonprofit which oversees the Oregon city's tourism marketing - referenced reports of far-left violence in the city in the ad.

It admits that much of what has been said about Portland - whose 50-strong riot squad resigned last week - was true, and that the city, which endures nightly riots, has an 'edge.'

'You've heard a lot about us lately,’ the NYT ad begins. 'It's been a while since you've heard from us.'

'Some of what you've heard about Portland is true. Some is not. What’s most important is that we’re true to ourselves.'

...

The advert goes on to highlight Portland's problems - and implies that locals don't mind the out-of-control behavior that has made much of the city's downtown area a no-go zone after dark

It says: 'We're a place of dualities that are never polarities. Two sides of the same coin that keeps landing right on its edge. Anything can happen. We like it this way.

'This is the kind of place where new ideas are welcome - whether they're creative, cutting-edge or curious at first glance. You can speak up here. You could be yourself here.'

'We have some of the loudest voices on the West Coast. And yes, passion pushes the volume all the way up. We've always been like this. We wouldn't have it any other way.'

'We have faith in the future. We're building it every day the only way we know how, by being Portland. Come see for yourself.'

There's a video version of the ad. Strangely, the video does not feature images of the riotous "edge" the print ad alludes to.

It does briefly show street protests-- emphasis on the "protests." Not riots. One clip is of a... candlelight vigil.

I don't think candlelight vigils are what Portland is known for.

The video only shows orderly streets and bustling commercial venues. Even the protests are orderly.

Almost as if they think that people don't want to visit a civil war zone.

The video also showcases more sexual diversity than a CIA recruitment ad.

Below, a more accurate video about Portland. Well, okay, it's from Oregon City, 28 minutes from Portland. But this goes on all the time. This is from June 18.

The Proud Boys legally reserved the park, and antifa, illegally, showed up to brawl with them. Of course all the headlines suggest that the Proud Boys started the fight, by... being in a park they reserved.

Another more honest video: the entire Portland riot squad resigning en masse.

Thanks to Tim Pool, who pointed out both the main story and the antifa brawl story.

BTW, Pool says that while the fifty members of the riot squad resigned from that squad, they did not resign from the police. I guess the riot squad is a special detail you volunteer for, and now they've de-volunteered. But they're still Portland cops.

Here's a good reason to visit Portland: the homicide rate is up 533%.

No, that wasn't a typo.

I remember when Reginald Dennying people was a thing. Someone tried that in Theodore Alabama and the victim drove to the police station and told them that someone had attacked him and tried to drag him out of his pickup truck at the stop light. The police asked where the perp was and the driver told them that as far as he knew he was still laying in the intersection with a couple of bullets in his chest.

We'll see. Let's hope this isn't the beginning of major inflation and that things will stabilize at some point.

But the "this is just a covid hang over" talk is starting to seem less ... believable. Other than lumber. That one I believe, since NAFTA shut down much of our domestic lumber market and basically gave it to Canada to the point where trees are cut down in Maine, shipped to mills in Canada, then the finished lumber is shipped back to the US. As I understand it, Trumps new NAFTA ended that, but due to covid and a bunch of other factors, those mills didn't magically re-open. Canada is still somewhat locked down right now.

Yeah, I don't see deflation on the horizon, although I suppose anything is possible. As for stagflation? That's not supposed to ever happen according to economic models, although clearly it has happened at least once before. I suppose that is also possible.

But the big concern for consumers / normal people is, of course, inflation. Which is definitely going on now, but the Fed is saying it's due to, basically, a covid hangover and will level off. We'll see.

So why bother reporting a mugging for $200 when nothing will happen. Its just a lot harder to cover up bodies dropping in the streets, unless you're China.

we can devalue or default. The usual act is to do both: drive into hyperinflation, then reset the currency unit as "new" or even give it a catchy name like the "Austral" or "Cruzeiro" and then hyperinflate that because changing the name of a fiat currency doesn't stop the bad policies, then renounce all unpleasant debts and peg the currency to something.

I suspect we will see one of the following: massive inflation, a haircut or negative interest rates, or possibly denial of treasuries held by foreign governments we think can't hurt us. Though "fed-crypto" may fit in there somewhere.

279 no. that's not how deflation works at all. a 400% increase in lumber prices is the opposite of deflation.

See, that is Old Wall thinking. We exist in a profoundly dysfunctional world with amazingly incompetent "leadership".

You need to ask yourself why lumber is 4x yet no one is interested in building or expanding mills and the junta is doubling the tariffs to increase scarcity. I'm seeing more of a Cantillion Effect - Helicopter money combined with velocity. Investors, rather than wage earners benefit.

Assets inflation, cash hoarding, no increase in productivity, all due to uncertainty. Government flooding the economy with money when there are highly complex markets does not mean inflation.

It could happen. Unless the Fed is on this right away, you could swing from stagflation to deflation quickly as businesses use up cash just to survive...or be forced to settle old debts.

I've never been homeless, but I've been broke. So I get it. It's my little way of giving back. And honestly, it's been reciprocal. Dude who hangs out at the local gas station saw me on the side of the road with a flat tire, emptying out my trunk, and he recognized me and came over and stood in the road to watch the traffic / move people over so they didn't hit me (no shoulder there) while I changed my tire. Which is a nice thing to do.

347 Every city or town council thinks of this as 'gentrification' - the holy grail of any town. You know, art boutiques and great restaurants and rising property values....what usually happens is liberals descend, drive up property values and taxes, and business start supporting vagrants and homeless people....while all the actual tax payers start to vanish...ask the city council of Venice Beach how that "gentrification" worked out.

Portland has always been a bit weird. My theory is that these cities (Portland, Austin, Columbus, etc.) tend to attract the aging hippies, weirdos, and misfits from the region, most of whom can't afford to live in SF or NYC. So the congregate in these smaller cities and make them "quirky" which quickly attracts others of their type.

Those three are all college towns where, before the Fe'ral government made attending university a running UBI experiment, the local economy dealt with people on very limited income yet an abundance of energy and desire to get out and do things.

That environment attracts ne're do wells and nightcrawlers. Many of the graduates, not sure what they want to do next took a very long time to leave the town that gave them the best four to eight years of life.

They have stealth-edited it, not. Too much blow back from the Oligarch industrial complex:

This is how it reads now:

Children and adolescents tend to have milder disease compared to adults, so unless they are part of a group at higher risk of severe COVID-19, it is less urgent to vaccinate them than older people, those with chronic health conditions and health workers.

More evidence is needed on the use of the different COVID-19 vaccines in children to be able to make general recommendations on vaccinating children against COVID-19.

WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) has concluded that the Pfizer/BionTech vaccine is suitable for use by people aged 12 years and above. Children aged between 12 and 15 who are at high risk may be offered this vaccine alongside other priority groups for vaccination. Vaccine trials for children are ongoing and WHO will update its recommendations when the evidence or epidemiological situation warrants a change in policy.

But given the context here at the moment, I think I can guess.

426 I used to like 70s NYC. Not because it was unsafe, but because the rents were low enough that communities stayed intact to some extent. There were shops which had existed for decades, and that gave some permanence and history in an uncertain world.

There was one appliance repair shop I used to go to and buy antique appliance that had been dropped off for repair decades earlier and never picked up. Or book stores. I remember going into the flatiron building before it became gentrified to an old encyclopedia dealer looking for a 1919? Encyclopedia Americana. The building was like stepping back in time.

I miss that stuff. I think change is good, but history and community is good too.

Back in '88, was a beach party with the hubs and some Aussie troop which were training with his unit.

I was addressed as an attractive negress which I found amusing at the time.

Now...I don't find it as amusing.

437 >> Yep, that's what I was finding; suitable for use for 12 and above.

Note how slippery that statement is. "More evidence is needed to make general recommendations..." But then, their "expert advisory group" says the mRNA shot are safe for 12 and above.

The WHO itself isn't sayin that, but it's expert advisors are. See? The vaccine fanatics will point to the expert statement.

Hell, that statement is so slippery. The expert statement is a blanket "safe for 12 and above", but the full statement says only *high risk children* 12 and above.

They didn't change the actual meaning, that children under 18 shouldn't be vaccinated unless they are high risk. They just said in a very Clintonian way, now.

455 While San Francisco seems to be further along on its trip to BarterTown status, my most fervent wish is that Portland gets there first.

San Francisco is an absolute gem of a location and I wish, even at this later date, that the city could turn itself around (it can't). On the other hand, I absolutely loath Portland. California with all its nuttiness has produced brilliance over the last century, and they have largely gone hand in hand since the 50s or 60s.

Portland only attracts the talentless assholes who still want that California nuttiness. Their lack of talent makes them even crazier and that's why there's been months of 250lb purple-haired "gender fluid" cows violently LARPing against imaginary nazis with their 125 lb trans "females" with bad facial hair compadres.
