The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The mayor has absolutely, absolutely got it reversed. Safety produces activity, activity is not going to produce safety, we have to make the place so safe people want to come and visit and enjoy it.” Professor Mitchell Moss of NYU

*

Quote II

“As we reflect on the significance of what this day symbolizes, let’s keep fighting to address the lasting consequences of slavery. Next step: reparations,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MNSomalia

*

Quote III

"You know, I've had a great life, oh my goodness. I loved what I did. Never worked a day in my life, really. The hard parts were sleeping in hotels, having rotten food." Bob Seger

*

Quote IV

“People aren’t getting it and they’re still bringing food and clothing and resources directly to folks that are out there right now. They’re only making themselves feel good,”Charlotte City councilmember Tariq Bohari

*

Quote V

Why get vaccinated against the Chinese Kung Flu if you have to wear a face diaper?

Monmouth University has released their new COVID-19 guidelines for the upcoming semester, which requires all students to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

The June 14 guidelines state that all students and faculty are required to be fully vaccinated for the fall semester, with few religious or medical exemptions permitted. Students and faculty will also be required to submit proof or documentation of their vaccination by August 1 through the school’s health portal.

On May 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People:

“Risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection is minimal for fully vaccinated people. The risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from fully vaccinated people to unvaccinated people is also reduced. Therefore, fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required…”

Despite the CDC’s guidance, Monmouth University, located in New Jersey, will still be requiring masks in all classrooms, labs, and libraries even for fully vaccinated students.

I enjoy fish, but commercial tuna sammiches are something I avoid. If you enjoy Subway tuna subs, here's an interesting story.

After a lawsuit claimed that the gigantic sandwich chain Subway was lying about using real tuna in its food, a reporter from The New York Times decided to investigate.

After buying up tuna sandwiches from a few different Subway locations, freezing the mystery meat, and sending it to a fish testing lab, the NYT investigation found that there was absolutely zero trace of any DNA from the tuna species Subway claims to offer — a surprise finding that could show nefarious sourcing by the fast food brand, but more likely illustrates the limitations of genetic analysis.

Caviar Caveats
Subway has, understandably, insisted to the NYT that it does in fact serve tuna in its tuna sandwiches, and multiple experts and employees of the chain told the NYT that they can’t imagine why Subway would so scandalously attempt to cut corners on an already low-cost meat. But the investigation does reveal how hard it can be to determine what we’re actually eating — and how little it seems to matter to many consumers.

Score 1 for the good guy. Thanks to our worthless judicial system.

According to authorities, 22-year old Josiah Bryant shot at the clerk, who fired back with a gun of his own. The clerk was unharmed in the exchange of gunfire, but Bryant was struck and killed.

While the investigation continues, it’s not likely that the employee will face criminal charges given the circumstances of the shooting. As for the would-be robber, it turns out that this wasn’t his first time trying to rob someone, though it appears he got off with a light sentence for his previous offense.

Court records indicate Bryant pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in 2018, and received a 20-year sentence with four years to serve.

He was brought up on probation revocation charges earlier this year. In April, a judge did not revoke his probation but extended it through 2024.

Oh the irony! Gays discriminating against white people.

The woke LGBT folk in Seattle are charging whites a ‘reparations fee’ to attend a gay pride event at the city park, and they have the backing of the city to do this.

From Jason Rantz:

MYNORTHWEST – Organizers for a Seattle gay pride event say they’re charging white people a “reparations fee” to attend. They have the support of Seattle City Council president and mayoral candidate Lorena Gonzalez and the Seattle Human Rights Commission.

TAKING B(L)ACK PRIDE organizers say all are welcome to attend. However, “white allies and accomplices” must pay the reparations fee. It will be charged on a sliding scale of $10 to $50 depending on one’s ability to pay. The event location is Jimi Hendrix Park, owned by the city of Seattle. This raises questions about the legality of a reparations fee.

$50 to prance and lisp seems a little steep to a casual observer.

As a casual observer: This might be a fun family reunion to watch from a safe distance.

A man has shared his heartbreak over discovering the boy he has raised as his son is technically his uncle, after his girlfriend had a long-running affair with his grandfather

I like my "Dumb" appliances and life in general. Texas power companies automatically raised the temperature of customers' smart thermostats in the middle of a heatwave

Some residents in the state, which is facing a heat wave that's straining its power grid, told KHOU 11 that they had awoken sweating and shocked that their homes had gotten as hot as 78 degrees without them changing the temperature.

It turns out that they had unknowingly enrolled their thermostats in an energy conservation promotion called "Smart Savers Texas," run by a company called EnergyHub, in partnership with power companies. The program gives EnergyHub permission to adjust participants' smart thermostats remotely during times of peak energy demand, in exchange for entry into a sweepstakes.

This ought to make progtards everywhere piss their pants.

On June 17, 2021, Breitbart News noted Mark and Patricia pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and forfeited the guns they held in a viral video outside of their home. For Mark, that meant forfeiting an AR-15, for Patricia, that meant forfeiting a pistol.

On June 19, 2021, Mark tweeted a photo of himself holding a new AR-15. Mark’s wife, Patricia, is standing behind him in the photo giving a thumbs up:

A baby girl born at just 23 weeks’ gestation was so small that her tiny foot was half the size as her mom’s forefinger, and her entire leg fitted into her sock.

Mom Mirva Rontti, 28, a primary school teacher from Rovaniemi, Finland, was in a classroom when her contractions began. She was rushed to a local hospital where she delivered her tiny daughter, Helmi Elina, in just two pushes.

Oooooooooh, my favorite source of trusted journalism.

That said, a previous study of the Teh New Hotness in foodie restaurants, blackened redfish, found that DNA testing proved that 90% of the 'redfish' served actually had no redfish in the dish.

Because the federal limits on harvesting redfish makes it damn near impossible to get real redfish. One fish per day, per person, no commercial exemptions.

Barreling happens because mistakes can be made with tag closing, and use to happen pre-character limit cause someone missed they copied the whole thread.

You can get banned for changing socks, and a CoB is cleaning up a particular thread and you post something that mean seem like a troll and you get swept up in the process.

And then there are the regs that have a night, the wrong topic, and kind of go off the rails and forget it's Ace's House and Ace's rules, which is thankfully rare.

Anyone who really wants to know already does, so no you didn't as it isn't like someone can just stumble into it even if they were given the clue it isn't some magical process. And it isn't like Yakuza have any sort of moral reservations about smuggling them in if they want/need them.

At my old favorite pub, one of the denizens was an old, retired French armorer. He served in one or more of the colonies and was very familiar with the locals who fabricated their own arms.

We had interesting conversations about specifics. I recall asking him, and receiving a nice short lecture on the manual tools/means of producing rifling. The guy knew his stuff.

I found the mixture of pub tobacco smoke, Guinness Stout, congenial surroundings, and a thickly accented Frenchman speaking of firearms fabrication was very agreeable.

You spend some time in gold country, you begin to get a feel for where the gold can be found, and where it cannot be found. Chemistry, gravity, and geography all come into play. I know one spot in B.C. that I would love to get onto with a reverse-circulation drilling rig, and punch a hole down to bedrock. Looks like an abandoned channel of a major river; one that has a history of carrying gold.

445 Well, my "project" for today was to rehab a "start cart". A small hand truck that contains a large automotive battery, some jumper cables, a ten-amp battery charger, and a small air compressor. The sort of thing that would be very useful on a car lot to start cars with dead batteries, and to air up flat tires.

The battery in it was gerfukt. And the "proper" way to access it didn't seem to work. So the reciprocating saw came out, and cut a doorway in the case. New used battery in place; the air compressor works.

Voltmeter was unreadable; plastic window all oxidized by weathering. Took meter out, sanded face until yellow dust replaced by white, sprayed with "instant clear coat". Now it's readable. Added meter switch so voltmeter does not cause (tiny) drain on battery.

Ammeter on charger was similarly obscured. Took "clear" plastic cover off meter movement, cemented piece of clear plexiglass over recess in panel where meter lives. Perfecto!

Began reassembly of case. Cut strips of aluminum, pop-riveted to case, then pop-riveted loose panels to strips. Works OK, about half done there.

Cut through axle, removed old wheels with seized bearings and flat tires.

464 The fever seems to have broken, a bit, on firearms, even a bit less but still somewhat, on ammo. Reloading components, nah. Still very little out there.

Asked two shooters today at the range, both of whom were talking about brass and their equipment, if they had primers or powder. Nope.

This too shall pass, though the timing is anyone's guess. Some vendors seem to think that there's an expanded baseline demand from new gun owners/reloaders, but I'm skeptical. Some, sure. But very few new gun owners will be reloading, or even thinking about it.

I don't know what the market research shows, but I'd guess less than 5% of gun owners, who shoot more than 4 times a year (more than just hunting, for example), reload.

483 Still seems like you ought to be able to fill ip tunnels with CO provides you have the exhaust. People manage to off themselves with grills and generators indoors with some regularity. Same principle. Just a math problem, unless maybe there are elevated exits or air shafts.

We are overlooking the obvious: if you find a tunnel entrance, simply start pumping huge volumes of water into it. When it finds an exit, stop up the exit, and keep pumping. VC drown.

486 Imperial Japan used gas in China for many years, regularly.

Of course Japan was not held in high regard almost anywhere for its behavior in China, but the chemical weapons part was not a particular point of outrage.

It has received little mention in most histories. The barbaric experiments of Unit 731 up at Ping Fan outside Harbin, sure, somewhat well known. But even that unit's field trials, such as with plague in Nanking, are less well known. And the regular use of chemical weapons is mostly unknown.

Not so random. Lakes in temperate climates "turn over" every year. Lakes in the tropics don't turn over until there is a dangerous overbalance of dissolved CO2 in the bottom waters.

One book, I think "Unit 731: Japan's Secret Biological Warfare in WWII" by Peter Williams, pretty sure that's the book I read about it, and subsequently lost along with lots of other stuff in a move. Carriers provided the "range" over the Pacific, that even P-38s and P-51s couldn't match. There was a VERY good reason we stuck to the Sherman tank, even though we had MUCH better Tanks in development.

Why? Logistics. 50,000 Sherman... 26,000 TOTAL German Tanks in WW2.

Add in our tanks ran off of gas instead of diesel, which further made it MUCH easier to supply them?

Professionals study logistics... which won us WW2... a lesson we have lost.

530 I've been reading threads here after the comment time is passed to the newer thread.
Oregon Muse had a great statement earlier today:

"This is a reminder that there are two types of progressives: the evil progressive and the naive progressive. What's the difference? Simply put, they're distinguished between those that don't believe their own bullshit and those who do. The former group are just fighting for power, and the latter group, comprised of wimpy soy boy schoolteachers, dumb high school students, stinky, dope-smoking hippies, little old ladies in tennis shoes, and Adlai Stevenson, are true-believers who earnestly believe in the good intentions of those who wish them dead. Of course, this dates back at least to the Cold War, where the naive progressives thought that the USSR actually wanted peace. Why? Because the USSR's thug dictators said they did, that's why. And if you can't trust a bunch of thug dictators sitting on a bloody mound of skulls of their own people, who can you trust?

Look, I said they were naive.

I would also point out that telling the difference between an evil leftist and a naive leftist can be extremely difficult."

533 Nothing was ready by 1943. In any case, nukes prior to about the period when they were used - at least until the fall of the Tojo govt. in June '44 - would likely not have produced surrender. The "peace party", within and outside the palace, lacked political mojo until it was clear - even with info withheld by the military - that the war was lost.

And we had one more implosion (Fat Man) bomb ready for use soon after Nagasaki, and Groves had said 3/month starting in October was doable, IIRC.

Marshall/Army had requested 9 for Operation Olympic, 3 for each major landing area, I think. Slated for November 1, 1945.

535 Romeo. Eight to nine months for the next Uranium bomb, but with it's insanely more complex engineering, who knows? But that was the lead time for the isotope.

Plutonium bomb? A year or more, but as a gun-fired bomb, the engineering was a duck fart on the ocean. Give 'em the sphere halves, (hemispheres), and the bomb could be assembled in hours.

Regardless. Those two were THE Grand Strategy for Japan. And it took audacious courage on the part of the Emperor and his Staff to get that recording of his Surrender speech played, on air. THAT is what really ended the war. The nukes simply brought that speech about.

547 Depending on weapon (though really we're talking about Fat Man design, there wouldn't have been any big changes by March 1946, unless I'm forgetting something), height of burst, and the weather at the time, the hazard to US forces from radiation is difficult to estimate.

Some of the crew, including the commander Sweeney, of Bock's Car, visited Nagasaki on their own completely unauthorized mission just a few weeks after the bombing (amazing story in itself). Before the scientists etc in ships off-shore were cleared to land. None of them suffered any ill effects.

I really can't get into Adlai II's positions. It's interesting, didn't the Dems nominate him twice against Ike?

They were an IL dynasty for a bit. Adlai I was VP under cleveland, son Lewis Green Stevenson was IL Sec of State, then Adlai II was gov and pres cand, then Adlai III was senator.

Bloomington based, after college I lied a couple of blocks from the historic family home.

550 Context. My Old Man was aboard the USS Valley Forge, when it did it's storied U-Turn mid-Pacific, hauling ass to become the first responding ship to the Korean War.

At the end of his enlistment, he returned to S.C., got his GED, and not only reenlisted, but got into Submarine School. WWII Fleet Class boats, Guppies, earned his Dolphins and became a Plank Owner on the USS Scamp. Several Fast Attack boats, then retired (medically) from the USS John Quincy Adams, the 2nd in class Polaris behind the George Washington. Fully bubblehead, Rickover School nuke qualified.

He had opinions about nuking Japan, and only regretted that we hadn't done so above the Yalu, when the time was ripe.

Sorry, but the worst people are those who will do something for 'your own good'. They cannot be reasoned with because you don't KNOW what is good for you.... otherwise you would be doing what they want you to do in the first place.

The second-guessing in recent years about the decision to drop the bomb, to me anyway, is mind-numbing.
What was the estimated Allied casualties estimate? 2.6 million troops and a couple of years tacked on to the War? It's like those in universities who teach this stuff didn't study history or then-current events.

564 LCD. Three times, I've looked across the sights at another human being, yet all three survived.

The obeyed commands in the milliseconds remaining to them, and hence extended their miserable lives.

One, was my brother, back in '86. I disarmed him and ran him out of my house, only to learn years later, that the "my" gun that he held, was used in his first bank robbery, for which he was convicted and served time.

And now, just in May, he earned another Forty Months, State time in MN, for Felony Armed Assault and following litany of charges. He turned 65 in jail, last September. He'll be nearly 70, when or if, he gets out. Pity. Forty months ought to have been fifteen years. I also got him convicted on an Electronic Harassment charge for blowing up texts (from his jail) to my cel, with extortion and physical threats. Thing I remember about holding subjects at arms, including my brother? Rock solid sight picture, firm hold, even breath, and HUGE RELIEF when things unwound.

Adrenaline let down is a hell of a let down though. Alone time and quiet was my friend.

568 Dad is being evaluated for hospice, and things are going apace. Meanwhile, that means dealing with loonie sisters, mom who is long gone mentally but fit enough to abuse him when she can, arguments, malarkey, and horseshit. God saw fit to burden me with family, and tell me to honor them, so here I am, putting up with drama, texts all day and night, opinions that make no sense, and misery to go.

----

Interesting choice of words about obeying commands in milliseconds.
I think you hit on the problem in many urban areas - example upthread was that Oakland mob attacking an ambulance while the EMT's are trying to help someone, in fact a black person in a black neighborhood.

People are en masse just ignoring commands, thinking they are impervious to being corrected or managed by law enforcement. I see it in Seattle and Portland, as well as other urban centers of dis-merit.
With this ability gone, the next logical step is mobs. Uncontrolled mobs. Mobs are cancer to a civilized society, and there is only one way to get rid of cancer.
