First-World Problems...Lockness Monster And Customer Service Edition

Lockblown.jpg

I am reasonably mechanically inclined, but I have no idea what the hell happened to this lock. I even had visions of repairing it, until I saw the number of pins and tiny springs strewn over the floor.

lockshrapnel.jpg

On the other hand, the Baldwin company was very helpful, and promptly sent me a replacement lock; except it was the wrong one. And while that was partially my fault for not explaining exactly what kind of lock it was (two-sided deadbolt), the customer service agent immediately told me that she would send out the re-keyed lock the next day, so I assumed (wow...I should know better by now) that she knew which one it was.

And of course the parts arrived at 6:01pm, just after their offices closed for the day. To be fair, it could have worked had there been less damage to the external locking mechanism, but the little tab that connects it to the deadbolt had sheared, so I needed both, or a locksmith. And as you know, I am a cheap bastard, so no locksmith for me thank you very much!

But the next morning I called them up, and they were efficient and apologetic (not necessary at all) and sent me the correct lockset, and even tossed in early delivery, which was much appreciated.

Installation was not obvious, and the amount of tightening of the screws holding the two locks together is definitely not intuitive. My first instinct was to tighten them a lot. But that introduced far too much friction in the system and it didn't function. Great! How about a simple torque value so it isn't a guess?

I am sure I could have called Baldwin and they would have told me exactly how to install the locks, but damn it! I'll do this myself.

I was pleased with their customer service...not everything works perfectly, and they were more than willing to make it right, and didn't even ask for the return of the first lock. They were also very pleasant, which makes everything very nice. The first agent even pretended to laugh at one of my jokes, which I think is wonderful training on Baldwin's part.

Anyway...what positive experiences have you had with companies that obviously want to do the right thing for their customers? We all have stories of the opposite, but let us set those aside and talk about the good ones.

[Well, unless you have a great "lousy customer service" experience]

13 Ah, I had a similar experience with a front door lock when I took the hardware off to polish the brass.

One unfortunate slip, and it was like explosion in the pin, driver, and spring factory. I tried to reassemble the damned thing, but have all the requisite parts/tools, so I finally gave up and took it to a locksmith. She replaced the pins, drivers, and springs. Cost: $10.

And I was VERY careful in how I handled the damned thing on the way home.

14 I was opening a custodial brokerage account with Schwab for one of my kids (they each get one when they start making money) and discovered they had changed the process since the first time; they now required you to print the page you sign, sign it, scan it, and upload it.
I had a hard time figuring out how to implement the new process, plus we'd just changed our internet service for the first time in 9 years *the day before*, and the printer didn't want to talk to the new Wi-Fi signal, anyway.
So I open a chat window with Schwab to find out how to get that signed page uploaded after I eventually got the printer to cooperate, and the nice man explained the process to me. I thanked him and told him that it all sounded simple now, other than the fact that the printer was sulking which was now holding up three different things I needed to do, and I couldn't even say any swears about it because I've got all these kids in the vicinity and *there isn't enough coffee in this house to deal with this*, followed by a lot of asterisks and ampersands and "Feel my pain, dammit.*

He responded, "That may be the best message I've ever read here." (To be continued)

18 Bought a Stanley 1/4 inch deep socket kit several years ago and the ratchet finally gave up the ghost, unlike its Craftsman predecessors which never lasted through one use.

Bought a new kit at Wally's - the kit was only a couple of dollars more than an individual ratchet so this time I bought short sockets.

Reading, I discovered they have a lifetime warranty.
I called the number on the box and was quickly diverted to human who very politely said that I would receive a replacement ratchet via USPS within two weeks.

Very helpful Stanley and now I have two complete 1/4 inch sets, one shallow and one deep.
Thank you, Stanley

Anyway, so right when I was about to screen so this hilarious conversation and say goodbye, the laptop battery died. I thought, "I'll never find that guy again to thank him." and went on trying to fix the printer situation.
Got it fixed, the page signed and sent, and thought little else about it. A couple days later, I get a notification about a package about to be delivered.

27 I was visiting relatives out of town some years ago. While out driving, I noticed that the temperature gauge on my car was way over on the "Hot" side. I checked the radiator and it was bone dry.

I took it to the local Valvoline oil place for a refill, and they told me that there was some kind of octopus-looking set of tubes that was cracked. They showed me how, when the engine was turned on, it just spat out radiator fluid.

They called the local Ford dealership to see if they had the part (they did), filled up the radiator again, gave me the directions to the dealership, and would not take a dime from me.

I've been going to Valvoline ever since.

28 1986. Bought new 1984 BMW motorcycle engine blew up. Logbook proved maintenance. First local dealer warranty "repair" a joke, parts left out or installed wrong. 2nd dealership took pity, inspected motor and laughed, at 1st repair botch then the fact that this motor left factory unfinished. Got me a brand new 650cc, new from the factory on a pallet, and installed it. Somehow warranty policy changed right after...

29 I make a point out of being polite to the phone agents, they are underpaid, unsupported, and have these insane time on call/time to document/calls worked metrics they are kept at like galley slaves.
On top of that, for them every call is potentially a screamer or a bastard, or worse someone who won't take yes for an answer.

In a call center every call is a drop into another pot that is inching up to the boiling point that may have pissed off piranhas in it.

31 My limited (due to few problems) experience with trouble with reloading equipment, or guns, has been the best customer service I've ever encountered.

Pretty much "A brand new one's on the way tonight, no charge" or close to it. I was taken aback the first few times.

First reloading equipment buy - used, like half of my set-up, acquired patiently via private sales - included a beam scale, a classic, an RCBS 505 (formerly Ohaus). First time I used it, couldn't get consistent performance (could well have been *me*, and not the scale). Called RCBS (up in Oroville, CA). They said send it in.

A week later, a brand new 505 arrives. Wow. So I had a brand new $90 scale that cost me $25. Was an auspicious start to my acquisition of gear.

34 I got back on the Schwab feedback page and wrote a humorous little paean of praise about the guy who helped me, telling them that he was a jewel beyond price and should be given a bonus, a raise, some vacation time, promotion...whatever they had handy. And if he ever leaves them I wish to be notified to so that I may mourn properly.

I figured they might be able to find him by name.
The next day, I got a response...from the guy's supervisor. Turns out that whole department works together in an office in Austin. He agreed with my assessment of their jewel of an employee and said he'd pass on my suggestions.

Door hardware is surprisingly complicated. When I took our front door hardware apart to clean and polish the brass, it looked simple enough.

44 Outrageously good customer service - NFCU. I had my cell phone number hacked (not the phone itself) while I was on vacation. Big mess. There were no NFCU branches within easy driving distance so all transactions were generally by phone/mobile app or web. Called them immediately on my wife's phone and they immediately put me in touch with a dedicated fraud service rep. After a series of authentication Qs, locked portions of my access to my accounts, but not all, and gave me a dedicated # to call anytime to use until all was well with the phone number. Couldn't ask for more.

45 Don't laugh but I had a very positive experience with Starbucks customer service. I had many hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards loaded on my phone app (school teachers get a lot of gift cards as Christmas presents). However, when I bought a new phone, I had to log in to the app with a password I couldn't remember linked to an email I no longer use, so I couldn't reset the password. I dug around on their website and actually found a customer service number. A real person answered my call and very politely helped me recover my old password and change my email address. They are a bunch of whack doodles when it comes to politics but I appreciated the help.

53 Promise you this. Industrial security door locks, handles, latches and bolts, can be even more maddening.

They're made to resist intrusion by pros, and the better brands and models are quite effective in this role. And I won't try to even do so much as a simple replacement of one, but just call the locksmith, first thing.

I'm pretty good at re-fitting, polishing and tuning the internals of a S&W revolver. But locksmithery requires witches cauldrons, evil brews and incantations. (best friend of over 40 years is a retired San Antonio P.D. officer, now locksmith. But not a gnome.)

While they despair and laugh at companies and hope they go bankrupt, I do not notice many of them designing a perfect lock that is both indestructible as well as unpickable. If it is so obvious and easy, why not do it themselves and make a mint?

77 We have a large Hustler brand mower, and we put it through it's paces. About a year ago we were having an issue with the safety switches and sent it for a full inspection. Afterwards it was running fine until about 2 weeks ago and it would start but not run or engage the mowing blades. After some work we determined the pressure switch on the seat was failing and we kind off bypassed it until we got a new one ordered (from India). Then we discovered a second switch was failing. Worked around that, and got the 8 to 10 acers mowed. Now mower will not start. It will start if we bypass all three or four of the safety switches, but will not run so mechanically the machine works. To get it looked at is a 3 week wait. Or you can pay 100 extra and have it moved to the front of the line.

So can you have too many Safety's on a device? Yes, yes you can.

91 44 Tonypete,
I have installed systems for my elderly parents and inlaws as well as myself. You can use Simply Safe as local or monitored. The monitoring service is excellent, calls to customer service are relatively smooth to fix any technical issues, and the system works by and large without false alarms. Also, because it is component based, it is relatively easy to service including the switch in their cellular modems necessitated by FCC and carrier changes (3g going away). Have not messed with the video monitoring option.

ADT experience was totally different.

92 CBD. Kicking in the door is a standard practice amongst the cruder, criminal set, ain't it.

Which is why my exterior door frames are built up with multiple layers of steel bracing, 6" long lag screws spaced six inches apart all around the jambs & headers, brass reinforcement plate under locksets and around both sides of the door.

One of those APC mounted battering rams affixed to what used to be a Main Gun barrel would defeat it. But I do think my door assembly will otherwise break a thief's ankle should he try his kick-fu here.

99 I occasionally watch videos from the lock picking lawyer and as always reading comments makes you despair for both the intelligence as well as the tact and courtesy of the general public on the internet.

I installed a rain sensor for our sprinkler system. Instructions included: not to place it indoors (good tip), nor to place it under the eaves outdoors (another good tip), and place it with the open end up, not down, so as to catch the rain (a third good tip).

They really don't give us much credit. Are people really stupid enough to think a rain sensor would function indoors, under the eaves, or upside down?

Nothing too sophisticated, just tune-ups and light repairs. Tires, brakes, filters, ignition service, charging system etc. Do good work and charge a fair but reasonable price, and you'd have all the business you can handle.

It's all buggered now, because it doesn't really pencil out, and cars need to be disassembled sometimes to a frightening degree to get at basic wear items. The labor costs are gonna be ridiculous no matter what.

128 Tony Pete,

Simply Safe runs some pretty decent sales and the newer system is easy to install with user replaceable and widely available commercially lithium coin type batteries. They have two levels of monitoring with different price points and you can simply use it as an unmonitored stand alone alarm. Easy to backup system settings and the system is redundant in being able to use a landline (not sure about VOIP type) in addition to cellular service. Complete setup including water, individual window and door sensors, glass break, panic buttons, key fobs, and motion detectors, and fire alarms with auxiliary alarm units and keypads was under five hundred and install took about one afternoon.

Motion detectors work okay with small pets if installed per instructions.

Old ADT system was hardwired and a pain in the butt including false alarms galore. I found the company itself difficult to work with.

Later Bangor Punta era Smiths are to be avoided unless you like working and fixing them. The early MIM Smith revolvers are to be likewise avoided. After the GCA of 1968, Smith and Wesson executives apparently believed that civilian handgun ownership was soon to end and as a result, used the businesses as a cash cow. Colt placed too much emphasis on defense contracts. That left an opening for a guy named Bill Ruger to make good. For seventies era revolvers, Ruger Six series of revolvers are tough as heck and the later Ruger GP series likewise. Blackhawks have always been tougher than its Colt competitor single actions due to its more modern materials and lockwork.

Operator's manuals used to be fairly thin, compact affairs, maybe 25 or 35 pages. Now, most if not all of the useful info is gone, or difficult to find - technical info like what's the hot valve lash or something is "see your dealer", the font has been reduced to needing a microscope, printed with onionskin paper, and full of BS like "Do Not Ingest Contents Of Battery "

Thanks, guys.

But between those two points, they are truly wonderful. Every day, they work very hard to make a rotten situation as un-unpleasant as possible. They smile, they joke, they pick things up, they bring meds, they are alert to everything around them at all times. They work very hard to keep my dialysis access (fistula) functional.

My clinic is part of a non-profit organization. I had a friend who went to a for profit clinic. There is no comparison between her experience and mine. She gave up and died after 3 1/2 years because she was so discouraged and unhappy. I have also talked with some of my fellow clients who had transferred in from a for profit and they are much happier now.

166 134 Common Tater, the answer is that you have an external 'screen' door that serves that function either in steel or something like the Larson Secure Elegance series with tri locking (EMCO has a similar model) and security glass. Those make it very difficult to do a smash in the door attack.

But, if windows are not hardened, then that is the likely entry point. Security plans and devices really need to be comprehensive and configured on your personal security risk/benefit calculations.

In troubled countries, note the use of nasty security fencing and walls, architecture (inner courtyard for light and air with few external entry points), dogs, and now tech stuff like video, controlled gateways, functional shutters and barred windows, and alarms. Houses can be quite elaborate inside but outside are plain and nondescript.

178 Driving through Idaho on a road trip late in the evening, my car started making a strange noise. I was near Boise and was happy to make it to the city without problems. I got a hotel room for the night and in the morning, I found a mechanic willing to see me that same morning.

Turned out it was just a metal protective plate that had come loose. The mechanic called a shop down the street to have them weld the plate to its mount. Took about 15 minutes.

Neither the mechanic or the shop charged me a penny for their time. I was so impressed, I had to write the Chamber of Commerce a note telling them of the customer service I got as an out-of-state traveler.

181 I've had a few. My best one recently was with Sprint, believe it or not. Someone masquerading as me had run up a big bill with Sprint, which I first learned about when I got a call from a bill collector. I phoned Sprint, and, after an interminable wait, was connected to their fraud unit. The person there - a middle-aged woman to judge from her voice - couldn't have been more helpful. The case was complicated, so we were on the line for nearly 45 minutes, but we got it cleared up. Later that day, I received an email clearing me of any responsibility for the debt, and they even contacted the credit agencies to get that off my record. I was so impressed that I wrote a letter to the president of the company, commending them on their service. And no, I am not a Sprint customer.

By the way, for those commentators who are complaining about the length of user manuals: There's a lawsuit, or fear of a lawsuit, behind every one of those instructions. Because, yes, there is a nitwit out there who tried to drink the battery acid, then sued the manufacturer because they didn't tell him/her/it not to do it. Don't blame the companies: blame the trial lawyers.

I was listening to the most recent Friday Night Tights and they were discussing the comic book industry and so forth and bringing up a similar point about comic books and movies and why the companies do what they do.

One thing that struck me: They said that the companies are often working off both their marketing and creatives (who are clueless moronic woke idiots) as well as using such rock solid data as internet polls to tell them that there is a vast market of Woke women who LOVE comic books and marvel movies, but do not like the toxic masculinity.

I have already mentioned that my opinion of people is already sunk to dangerous lows in the past few years. However, I often am surprised and realize my opinion is too high.

At the time I placed the order, Apple was the only vendor showing as a participating supplier of the product. Minutes later, I received a notice from Apple that the order couldn't be completed because the item was out of stock. WTF? Apple out of its own product? So I called AMEX and talked to a fantastic customer service rep. He helped me order the product from Best Buy for the full price and then adjusted my points balance so that I was only charged the number of points that would have been deducted with the 30% discount. This was just the most recent of my fabulous experiences with AMEX. They're top notch, especially w/r/t fraud surveillance.

I had a shockingly helpful interaction with Verizon. Mom wanted to lower her cable/internet bill ("Tell them I'm elderly & can't afford it & I don't need all these channels."). After the usual interminable wait, the woman was incredibly helpful in getting the bill down significantly & told me when to call back every couple of years to renegotiate. (Mom: "I'm glad the bill is lower, but why aren't I getting channels X, Y, & Z anymore?"). Made sure the rep's supervisors knew how helpful she was.

I figure it will take a few weeks for the refund to show up on my credit card.
Easy, pleasant transaction with no hassles.

We've been doing in person for months now with no masks and no distancing starting 3-4 weeks ago. Heh. Or you can have none at all, save what's between your ears. I just got in from mowing the ditches here. I fired up an old MTD "high-wheeler" walk-behind mower that I had in the shed for years. Had to loosen the screw on the float bowl, and drain some bad gas out, until it ran clear from new gas in the tank. Took a bit of priming, and many pulls, but it did start, and ran better the longer it ran. Did about an hour's worth of mowing on the sidehill where the ditch (swale, really) meets the road. Lot of gravel there.

I had previously welded a steel plate over the rear grass discharge, so any stones get deflected to my left.

It's not quite in the same category but I clean my own pool (and change the pool filter), I dust my own books, etc., and there is NO financial excuse for it given my hourly rates.

The activity of doing these things, however, makes these things =mine= in a way just having them pile up for someone else to handle does not.

FlexRadio gives free tech support for their products, even if not original owner. The techs are knowledgeable too! Mine did such a good job that I offered to pay for the help, but Flex would not accept it.

Aldi is a company that impresses me very much. They deliver amazing value on essential foods and other products, and I hope their model keeps working for them. The difference between them and their competitors is vast. Their competitors either cannot, or don't want to, imitate Aldi's efficiencies.

I called and got Amos (in PA, maybe an Amish operation?) ... He said they were out of Ziram, but could ship the Manzate. (fine, why did they not already do that a week ago?)

Then nothing happened and next week the next guy sounded better, I'd get my tacking number before end of day. I got it late the next day. They were going to drop ship the Manzate, second call informed me they can't do that ... some EPA rules on shipping that. So that should still be coming.

They had the best price, and I want to buy American small business. Ordering through Amazon, I think Amazon demands better performance. But Amazon is part of the terrorist BigTech intent on overthrowing America ... so I can accept some delays and incompetence ... I guess.

279 I've had good luck with insurance companies. One was super helpful and sympathetic with an issue regarding privacy from the policy holder and the other, the CS called doctor's office with us to find one who would take the plan (none did) and then made sure that the actual office visit was covered as in-plan, since none of the specialists in town took the plan (thanks, Obama!).

Back in the day, I hated my insurance, because every year I'd have to fight with them... only to find out that it was the pharmacist that was the problem, not the insurance. She just kept blaming the insurance for her bullshit. For years. Now I use a chain. Shame.

Fast forward a few years and a bit of arthritis set in and gripping the round knob became difficult.

I contacted Schlage thru Twitter DM about purchasing just an egg shaped knob to replace the round ones. Got a reply that they only sell the complete door set but asked when I purchased the originals... many years ago I told them. They asked for my address and sent me four!! new door knob sets with the egg shape! Free!!

Terrific customer service which I was not expecting and is now making me very happy I purchased Schlage for all the interior and exterior doors.
