I've actually been without heat, outside of emergency, for the past three winters. But then all I had to do was drag a portable radiator between bedroom and office. At least with cold temps I'm not put into a bad mood and it actually helps me sleep better. And aiir-connditioning, let's be honest, is not pleasant in its own right and is just relief from heat and humidity.

Posted by: lizabtha at June 19, 2021 05:32 AM (L3Rsz)
I am far from an expert on it. No, check that, I know little to dick about it. But my understanding was it was when the last hold out areas of the CSA, located in Texas, learned the war was over and slavery was abolished. The celebration was a local Texas thing for many decades. I recall many East Texas relatives who talked about Juneteenth but I never fully caught on what they were talking about. My understanding was everyone celebrated it, it was a happy time to spend with friends, family, and your town.

Posted by: Quint at June 19, 2021 05:42 AM (gJfTA)

83 I know it has become a thing over the years but it didn't come into
national focus until very recently. I hope and kind of doubt the
celebrations will be like those of East Texas. Hell, I doubt there will
be that many celebrations nationally, other than net commentary. I
could be wrong. Freedom should always be celebrated. But history should
also be learned and context should be learned. We don't do too many true
celebrations nationally anymore. It is more about something other than
celebration imo.

104 Look I get it. Technically the Emancipation Proclamation freed nobody It was a war aim, and the writers said it was a war aim. They freed no slaves in loyal union states like Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and MO. But the idea for sure was the catalyst. For sure that is the day that should be celebrated. Almost all slaves were freed before Juneteenth. I guess I can see why some would choose that day, the day all slaves were freed. But why is it just now a thing? And much more importantly, how much history will be learned? How many Americans learned more about their nation last "president's day"?

from what I've read, even though Lincoln signed the Proclamation in 1862, it took the advance and presence of Union troops in formerly Confederate states to make emancipation a real thing

110 eople should remember that the emancipation
proclamation only applied to the Confederate States and then only
enforced after they were overrun by the North. IIANM it was not
eliminated in MD until much later.

Posted by: Vic at June 19, 2021 05:51 AM (mpXpK)

it only applied to areas in rebellion. Areas of the CSA controlled by the USA were not compelled to free slaves. Most Union armies wanted nothing to do with them or anyone else for that matter. They were in a serious situation and the last thing they wanted was a bunch of people following them around.

i am not making light of it mind you. It was all Lincoln could do, it was a war aim and sold as such. He needed Congress to change the laws of the land.

Many don't know that MO was anything but a loyal Union state. It didn't secede, but only because Lincoln's troops reached Jefferson City before the vote. MO had many battles of the War Between the States fought here. I'm not sure the portion of dead in the state, because we don't generally whine about it. It was always taught (outside MO, as I didn't grow up here) as kind of fence-sitting, but I'd bet it wasn't.

125 and Kentucky and Delware had legal slavery after Juneteenth. So the last slave holding states were Union, or USA states as far as I can tell. This is not my wheelhouse but even Wiki has some info. I know a bit about it so they are right about this one. Juneteenth was in 1865. But the 13th Amendment didn't end slavery in Kentucky and Delware, Biden's home state, until December of that year.

So really it is about an event in Galveston Texas that happened in June of 1865. So it wasn't when slavery was declared ended in the CSA. It wasn't when 90 percent of slaves were freed, and it wasn't when the last slaves were freed. But other than that, it was the day slavery ended in the USA.

Even with that said, it is a well known local holiday in parts of Texas. It people want to celebrate it, all power to them. I always support freedom. But can we get a tiny bit of historical learning out of it?

personally I am not a big fan. I know many in MO were pro CSA. The James Younger Gang, Quantrill and many others. I am not demeaning them but that area was pretty sad imo. It was most people attacking their neighbors. I know a lot of history and some good movies have been done about those battles. I am more mainline in the areas of that war I study. But no doubt that area spilled a lot of blood. Hell, Maryland wasn't loyal either until the right people got put away with no due process.

--

It really is an evil like no other. Democrats have utterly destroyed blacks as human beings. And all for political advantage. They've ruined their lives, their families, their very souls with the constant drilling that they're worthless nothings who are being severely mistreated. It's a crime against humanity how the black community has been ruined. Blacks are now so steeped in hatred for so much, so caught up in nothing but their blackness, that they just can't live regular lives like everybody else. And with the hopelessness comes the drugs, the crime, the ignorance. Yes, Democrats have destroyed the black race in America.

230 Legal human chattel slavery ended in the United States on October 18, 1867, when the US government freed the thousands of slaves owned by the Tlingit tribe in the newly-acquired Alaska.

These slaves were of every imaginable ethnicity -- the Tlingit were notorious for enslaving captured mariners. Most of them were members of other Indian tribes, with the occasional Eskimo or Aleut for variety. They ran organized slave-raiding parties as far south as Northern California.

Slaves were treated extremely brutally. One custom, which they had in common with other PNW tribes, was the potlatch, in which wealth would be destroyed or given away to demonstrate how wealthy you were (like lighting cigars with $100 bills). In these ceremonies, large groups of slaves were sometimes murdered.

Let me know when we get a holiday for that.

They'll cower and then they'll learn. How do I know? About 15 years ago, social workers decided that the security guys, the crisis intervention specialists, were too police like and they lobbied to get rid of them. The MSWs started going to the trainings that the CIS people, the doctors and nurses and mental health techs attended. Well they hated that and started showing up with doctor's notes to escape the training ( you had to practice self defense and learn restraint techniques). Anyway, they decided to go for verbal interventions instead, and one got punched...and that was the end of that.

The blacks actively participated in this and joined up willingly.

--

Certainly nobody could argue that. But to get them to actively participate (unknowingly in their own destruction), they were taught to hate. Hate whites. Hate America. Fixate on their blackness to such a psychotic extent that they simply can't function and succeed as all other races who have come to this country have.

You can't reach the brainwashing that's been ingrained in them for the past 60+ years. You see it every day. Just like this dumb bint Macy Gray. Who became famous, likely made a lot of money, lives better than most...and what's she fixated on? Her hate for America, so we have to change our flag. Never understanding or appreciating just what she has, thanks to this country. She's one of millions. No, Democrats have been wildly successful at convincing these people they're victims of white racism. And they believe it. Hence, Democrats have ruined blacks in so many incalculable ways.

that is probably true. The other option is Hispanics. But if that happens they will have to admit Cinco De Mayo was a local event about an obscure battle in an unknown war. Juneteenth has more going for it for many reasons. But everyone knows Cinco De Mayo and few still to this day know anything about Juneteenth.

Posted by: Quint at June 19, 2021 05:54 AM (gJfTA)

Basically, it's 3 things:
1) Democrats had the poo scared out of them by what looked to be before "The Late Night Miracle" 20%+ Black voting for President Trump if that became a thing the Dims would rarely win a legit election for a long time. Fortunately, they had the Reps to help them.
2) The Reps now see the hope of a big sweep in 2022. But, they've thrown away any reason for 90% of their voters to vote for them by helping to dump President Trump. They know Wine Moms won't vote for "racists" so anything the Dims want that they can label opposition to as "racist" will get passed. This is an old Dim pre-ellection trick.
3) Fits in with the current E-E-Evil White People narrative cuz EWPs have been supressing this great and important day thru their E-E-E-evil White Peopleness. It's a Texas thing and the Texas thing was fun and a celebration for all. The national thing run by leftists I'm sure will be all racial hatred and grim sackcloth and ashes

290 It galls me that Juneteenth is being marketed (yes, "marketed") as an explicitly Black holiday.

It's a Texan holiday. As such, it celebrates unity. It celebrates freedom. It celebrates a new future. As a national holiday, if it should exist at all, it should do the same, but that's not why it's there, now, is it?

It's there to perpetuate the myth of White Supremacy and Black Helplessness that pseudo-marxist barbarians have spent the last half of a century carefully nurturing to keep Their Voters on the plantation. "Remember where you came from, Darkie". "Remember thou art Racist, Honky". The Democrat party and the "Woke" monsters who have hijacked it can't let a minute go by without trying to demoralize people.

In fact, someone should ask Biden to dedicate Juneteenth to modern slaves held in captivity today. That is the second great question I have given in this thread. I don' normally judge myself but right is right. The first was about how Deleware, the state he represented for decades, didn't end slavery until long after Juneteenth.

Another possible Feather Day

Fort Michilimackinac is located at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The Fort served as a trading post with access to the St. Lawrence River and the Upper Great Lakes. It was constructed by the French in 1715 and later abandoned in 1783. In 1761, the French garrison left the Mackinac Straits after British troops arrived. The French had encouraged the Ojibwe Tribe to get rid of the English. On June 2nd in 1763 the Native Americans played a game of baaga'adowe (similar to modern day lacrosse) as the British watched. However, the game was staged to divert attention from the attack the fort in what is now known as the Massacre of Michilimackinac.

349 So really it is about an event in Galveston Texas that happened in June of 1865.
_____________

Yep, it was basically just a local event, which is why it's stupid to make it a federal holiday.

But it's been a pet project of the left for many years now. When Obama was running (incompetently) the Annenberg Education Challenge in Chicago, which basically just consisted of him giving away other peoples' money, he used some of the grants to pay for "Juneteenth" parties in Chicago schools. Obama never explained how having black public school kids in Chicago celebrate the fact that over a century ago some TX slaves were freed by Union troops in TX would help improve education in Chicago schools.

I guess it's one of those "black" things that we "white privileged" folks can't understand. Because we're linear thinkers who believe that if your problem is that you are an 8th-grade black kid who hasn't yet mastered 2nd grade math and reading skills, perhaps your time would be better spent learning those skills, rather than partying about something that happened to people long dead, in TX, over a century ago.

351 If lincoln had not sent federal troops into
Baltimore and jailed almost every newspaperman and politician when the
war broke out, Delaware would possibly have joined the South

A large percentage of men from the State fled to Virginia and did fight for the South.

I think it is likely. But no way the Fed Gov would allow itself to be surrounded. Same reason why NOVA was technically a no go zone other than for Mosby and his raiders. Manassas was where the CSA felt capable of a legit defense. There were many logistical reasons for that, and it is no coincidence there were two major battles there.

btw, whoever did the spell checker was not from the South.

Thanks very much, Salty. However, Jessie is still with us, God bless her. Jessie is our organist. This was our pianist/treasurer who died. Jessie would be the age to be Linda's mother. I stopped by the tell her after Linda died because she lives in the town where the hospital and I didn't want to tell people by e-mail.She was naturally quite upset. They were buddy musicians and used to play for each other when the other one is out of town. She said that she would play for Linda's funeral; It must be hard playing for some many years after the death of friends.

354 Neighbor's sewing machine embroiders. She has a program that results in a skeletal hand with an upraised middle finger. I should ask her if she could enlarge it to flag size.

A) Tyler is Juneteenth Central, the original version that meant something to the communities.
B) Very interesting. That area of TX is mostly Southern Baptist. Good the the Catholics are making their claim. The more Christians the better. I would bet that entire region is well over 90 percent Christian.

Oh the Leftists hate it. It is like the Betsy Ross flag but give it a year or so. Funny, I have seen the libs flying the Betsy Ross in their rich neighborhoods they took over in historic districts.

Posted by: sock_rat_eez at June 19, 2021 08:03 AM (wHoql)

pretty much. Bull Run goes through just fine, Manassas is a misspell. Lets see, Antietam works but Sharpsburg doesn't . I was kind of joking before but know I see a legit conspiracy.

365 Saw a photo of Brendan Fraser in the DM. Yikes. He has put on a lot of weight. Says he's doing a movie about the life of a 600 pound man. Is he planning on weighing 600 pounds for the movie? Couldn't they just put him in a fat suit, like they did for Gwynneth Paltrow in that movie where she played a porker? Gaining that much weight, especially at Fraser's age, seems risky. He may not be able to lose it. This may be taking method acting too far.

366 I am just kidding, the checker says Shiloh is ok but Pittsburg Landing is not. That works the other way. I am still keeping an eye out though. It is not like Manassas and Sharpsburg are not legit towns.
