And a pinnace, like a flutter'd bird, came flying from far away;
"Spanish ships of war at sea! we have sighted fifty-three!"
Then sware Lord Thomas Howard: "'Fore God I am no coward;
But I cannot meet them here, for my ships are out of gear,
And the half my men are sick. I must fly, but follow quick.
We are six ships of the line; can we fight with fifty-three?"

What the Spaniards have done in professional golf it truly amazing. Over the last 30 years, if you had a team competition and you went three on three, Spain would easily be as much as a favorite as any other nation.

When studying the Depression, Galbraith created a concept he called "The Bezzle." The Bezzle is the quantity and scope of undiscovered embezzlement. During the good times, when everyone's making money, a lot gets stolen and it doesn't really matter because everyone is still making progress. The theft - whether actual embezzlement and nest-feathering, or huge waste, or malinvestment, or whatever - goes unnoticed.

Once those good times peter out, it all gets discovered quickly. As he put it:
But even though money is plentiful, there are always many people who need more. Under these circumstances the rate of embezzlement grows, the rate of discovery falls off, and the bezzle increases rapidly. In depression all this is reversed.

I have been thinking recently that nepotism (really, cronyism) is the political equivalent of The Bezzle, It accumulates on the ascent and comes into the fore all at once as a crippling overhang once we cross the apogee/zenith.

Increasing capacity is a long and difficult process. You spend years fighting environmentalists who want no additional generation, NIMBYs who want it built anywhere but here, politicians who want it built over there where they need votes, contractors who want it built by their people, endless debates about every detail of construction, incompetent bureaucrats, and at the end the risk that you'll finish construction only to have the government policies change and suddenly you're stuck with an asset that no longer pays for itself.

Far easier to simply tell everyone to turn off their ACs.

Maybe so. But the Irish and the Scots hated England anyhow, so "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," etc., props the idea up. And the Spanish sailors would have had the additional attraction to the local women of being rather exotic and Other.

No, I really don't. You keep adding hyperbole whatever I said to make it sound more provocative. Dishonest of you.

"What exactly do you expect in the way of constructive replies that won't be fodder for LEOs?"

No, is a valid reply. Yes but we don't discuss that in open comms, is also a valid reply. Burn the witch! is not a valid reply. It's way out of proportion to what was asked.

And when you falsely accuse a guy of being a witch and he goes out of his way to provide any info necessary to clear his name, and you just ignore that and continue to bear false witness?... not a valid reply.

It's a good Mutt and Jeff technique though - they guy calling everyone else a snitch usually turns out to be the snitch.

Thanks, but I can't take full credit. Colorado Alex in Exile has been making an analogy where society/political life is now suffering from MBA syndrome of consuming its accumulated capital. That analogy got me to thinking quite a bit, which is when I remembered Galbraith's concept of "The Bezzle." I don't think it's a direct fit, but I think it is thematically similar enough to what's happening institutionally that it merits some further thought.

I found some good articles on the subject years ago. I am not saying they were definitive but they made some good points at least on the Spanish Armada idea. If you search Google, you pretty much come up with Ireland sites made by who knows. And they pretty much link to the same article. I am not saying I know it to be untrue, but long ago I looked into it and at least to my level, I decided it was mostly folklore.

One thing for sure, the historical community has had little desire to go into this publicly. And this was way before the modern times where everyone is offended for any reason. Also, that is an American term. That alone makes it interesting really. The Irish don't use it for their own reasons.

394 The various Wokeish pushes in energy - smart thermostats where things can be adjusted to smooth demand, smart electric meters to drive time-based billing, electric cars, ad naseum - is very much like Just In Time industrial supply. It increases efficiency at the cost of robustness.

In energy, however, there are different processes and incentives in play. Without JIT-type demand control, utilities *must* become extremely robust. With JIT-type demand control, they can get away with slacking off a lot more. This is efficient - less plant, less infrastructure, fewer people, etc. - but it also means that the system is no longer tolerant to aberrant demand. Even without ill intent (and I think there is also a lot of that going on), a lot of this capability will result in more operational and strategic sloppiness.

The states involved are fully prepared to hoist the federal government by their own petard. They will not enforce those laws they deem unconstitutional, especially with respect to the 2A. You are going to see some of this with ATF, if they try to enforce their pistol brace subversion. There is nothing in the constitution or law which gives them legislative power, and the states are about to remind them of that.

That concept cannot scale up very well and is an outright disaster when applied to a global economy. There's no allowance at all for simple things like weather. You need a buffer of some sort to allow for interruptions, as there will be some unexpectedly.

I think that Kris may need to weigh in on the provenance of this painting. I'm reading that it was actually painted by Cornelius Claesz van Wieringen, who was a student of Vroom's.

In 1621, the Admiralty of Amsterdam commissioned Vroom to produce the painting, but when they saw how much he wanted to do it, they balked and asked one of his students, van Wieringen, to make it instead.
