O For ONT

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me...Veirddave

Shocking Statistic

Study: 97.8% of Mass Shootings Since 1950 Occurred in ‘Gun-Free Zones’

I mean, I'm not sure which is most shocking, the fact that someone who has decided on mass murder would chose to go to a place where his victims could least effectively resist or the fact that someone who has decided on mass murder wasn't deterred by the possibility of being charged with the crime of carrying a weapon in a gun free zone. It's a real head scratcher, yessiree Bob.

Brave New World

Why I'm Leaving Education

I’m leaving education. I don’t recognize the history being taught. I don’t recognize my home state. I barely recognize the country in which I live. I hope this cultural revolution recedes, but in the meantime I will spend the rest of my life fighting it so that my descendants don’t have to.

I understand the inclination, believe me I do, but I wonder if we wouldn't be better served if more teachers were like the one Ace posted earlier today, standing up to the board of education in her county. I'm blessed to have the resources to send Little to Catholic school so he's managed to avoid most of the CRT indoctrination crap, but not everybody is in a position to do so. Where does this end? Are we finally seeing push back, and will it be enough to reverse this?

How Your Brain Works

Whichever phrase you're reading, that's what you'll start to hear. Neat!

Hard Times

A Penis Drawing That Can Be Seen From Space Has Popped Up in Australia

They don't know who er, erected it. Still, geoglyphs are as old as mankind, and it's the ancient ones that fascinate me. What possessed people to create are that can only be seen from above before they had the ability to go up in the air to look at it?

Cute, Until It's Not

This woman made a really cute post on social media about a trip to New Orleans:

performer.jpg

That's pretty neat, right? I wonder how she felt when she found out (or if she even did find out) that the street performer in the picture was arrested for murder.

Burn The Whole Rotten Thing Down

UNICEF Report Says Pornography Not Always Harmful to Children

UNICEF says any efforts to block children from accessing pornography online might infringe on their human rights. UNICEF bases this claim on an expansive interpretation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

UNICEF also claims that asking for age-verification to access pornography online may deny children access to what it calls “vital sexuality education."

I'm at the point where I don't know if what we're seeing is the inevitable result of stripping the traditional Judeo-Christian foundation of western civilization away or if structures of power in this world are just one giant grooming operation. Or both, I guess. Anyhow, you'll be relieved to know that the US gives almost $1 billion of your tax money to UNICEF each year. Yay!

I Guess They Were Out Of Yellow Stars

Indian police stick skull banners on unvaccinated people

those who haven't got vaccinated being made to wear a poster carrying a message, "Stay away from me as I am not vaccinated yet”

“Ungeimpft raus!”

Gun Pron

I want one of these:

Whitney.jpg

That's a Whitney Wolverine, a .22 cal semi-automatic pistol from the 1950s. I don't want it because it's a great gun or anything like that, although other than a reported finickiness over what brand of ammo you run through it it's a fine gun, I want one because I just love the way it looks. It's got a 1950s, George Jetson, Space age aesthetic that I love. That's not an accident, it was designed to look that way, but buying one probably isn't in the cards. They're kind of rare and one in good shape will set you back 3-4 grand. You can buy a Wilson CQB 1911 for that kind of money. It's not as sleek, but it's probably a hell of a lot more useful.

How The World Sees The US

Assumptions About America That Were Spot On

The list calls these “questionable”, but honestly I don't think that word fits. These are simply things that people from around the world found when they visited America. If someone visited France and found out that it was actually full of cheese-eating surrender monkeys, would that be questionable? (FTR, the people of France were quite nice when I visited, and that was in Paris to boot).

Not All Heroes Wear Capes

A Smart Military Blog

Related: I was watching a show on the History channel about warfare in the middle ages. There was one instance when a castle was under siege, and the attackers launched the head of a dead peasant from a trebuchet. It knocked the oldest son of the castle's duke off the battlements, killing him instantly. They said it was the first recorded example of a serf-face-to-heir missile in history.

But, I have had a few moments where students have seen through the SJW bullsh*t, and I think I bear some responsibility for that. If nothing else, I know they wouldn't have heard the same thing from someone else that they did hear from me. If we don't do this, who will?

That's exactly what they did, used calories instead of kcal. Gasoline is about 31 kcal per gallon. Sometime a capital 'C' is used for kcal, ie Calories, but it's confusing.

So, no gasoline does not have enough energy content to provide for the rest of a human life by a long shot.

Incidentally, considering how much energy it takes to walk, a human could walk about 900 miles.

So, 900 miles per gallon, if you could burn gas in your body.

That's a deeper dive into the metallurgy and chemistry than I'm qualified on which to opine. Belching out an opinion, regardless, I'd think it'd be fine for most pistol type chamberings. Higher end bottleneck rifle cartridges cross into a whole 'nuther world of steel elasticity, resonance, resistance to galling, flame-erosion and such.

163 One of the better instructors or professors at university was, as I recall a Jesuit priest. Or priestette I suppose. Whether she quit or whatever, I dunno. Seemed nice enough. Taught quite a bit about logical fallacies and formal debate, and how to spot BS.

One of the more useful classes in life. If you have kids, make sure they learn how to spot authentic frontier gibberish. A finely calibrated Bullshit Detector.

Politicians, and the Media, are among the worst offenders.

Fauci exhibits many of them. Most recently, he deployed the logical fallacy in argumentation known as "Appeal To Authority". This is the idea that "experts" should always be deferred to, and listened to. You, on the other hand, are just an idiot, having no degree from Deah Old Hahvahd.

The fallacy isn't that we should never listen to experts, or that experts don't exist - but beware especially of people who deploy the "Do You Know Who I Am!?" card.

There's also the question of whether Fauci even is an "expert". He may just be a con artist.

184 Has anyone ever seen an estimate of how much of the animal mass in the world consists of humans? I would guess less than 1 percent. So take 6 billion times that number of kilocalories times 100, and the animal kingdom is consuming a whole lot of energy every day. Now, a lot of it is animals consuming each other, but in the end it all comes from plants. So that's a f*ckton of energy that the plant kingdom has to produce every day, just in food for the animal kingdom. The source of all that energy? The sun.

It's little known, but at one time there was a program called ACOTA (Africa Contingency Operations Training and Assistance) where we trained and equipped African units for deployment to peacekeeping missions to try to fix the problem you describe. I worked with the Senegalese, and I can honestly say the soldiers were as good as the average National Guard unit (with whom I also worked a lot). Less well-trained and less well-equipped, but good, trainable young men. Senegal has a proud martial tradition in the French military universe.

That's not quite what I'm saying. I don't get in front of the class and say, "Reagan and Trump were two of our greatest presidents, and if you don't believe that, you can go to hell." That's never going to be productive.

What I do is present the facts, present competing opinions while clarifying that they are only opinions, and telling them to reach their own conclusions. That's what builds rapport with the students, and I think a fact-driven approach works out pretty well for our side. I have always made it clear that Communism is not the natural enemy of Nazism, and that the Founding Fathers had a lot more going on than slavery and crap.

Got a question for you: would torsion bar steel be a good blank for making a a gun barrel? I scrapped out an old Nissan 4X4 chassis last week, and I saved the torsion bars. About 3/4" diameter by 24 inches long.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 10, 2021 09:29 PM (H4KU1)

Torsion bar: spring steel, Rockwell Hardness north of 45
Ordnance steel: RH 25-30 or so
Rifling by hand with a button will not be fun at all, I expect.
I'd wonder if boring a torsion bar results in a straight bore. Kinda doubt it would have been heat treated to relieve internal stresses and that might result in a bore that's not straight. So, I'd think about heat treating the stock.
Like Jim said, pistol cal (or rimfire). Not enough steel to make a centerfire rifle cartridge chamber. Lots of barrel profiles taper *down* to 3/4 inch or more. Chamber end of a blank (unthreaded for a receiver) usually 1.25 inches or so.
No clue about longevity/barrel erosion near the throat.

The penis on Google Earth thing isn't actually there, if you click the link in the article. It's either simply not there, or Google digitally removed it, or the link in the article is the wrong location. I found a supposed picture of it at a newspaper also linked in the article, but that's it. I've never spent so much time looking for a giant penis, only to have my hopes dashed so thoroughly.

Also, that Buck Rogers pistol is gorgeous, and makes me wonder if someone could design an AR to look that pretty, so nobody could say it's scary-looking.

347 Nothing wrong with a .22 for self defense. Other calibers might be better, in many ways, but a .22 will still get the job done.

There are 100,000s of thousands of folks in the grave as testament to the .22's abilities. Now, granted, there are some .22 shooters who are also in their graves, 'cause the wee round didn't cause a bleed enough fast enough equation, but I'd still not curse the having of but a .22, when shootin' is required, and nothing else is to hand. Just shoot quickly enough, accurately enough and repeatedly enough, and your odds are better than naught.

Nobody wants to get stabbed with a knitting needle, jammed in to the hilt. Which is more or less the wound channel of a .22LR when fired into standard gelatin media. And when fired into a human torso, with various bones, cartilage and differing tissue densities? Internal bullet deflections and ricochets are a brass plated, bloodletting bitch.

I spent two days taking lake sediment samples in Northern Saskatchewan, riding in the rear seat of a Hiller 1100. I had a map and a notebook, and did my best to keep an accurate record of where each sample was collected, while my partner was throwing the bomb-shaped corer out the open door, and reeling it back in after it hit bottom, and embedded itself in loon shit. Then the pilot would zoom off, as fast as the machine would go, and do high-G turns to get us to the next site. It was a hoot.

440 OK maybe smart economic morons can see if my thinking is off but wouldn't a smart way to profit from both the huge markup of used cars and hyperinflation would be to buy multiple new cars on a long pay out loan and just garage them? You could resell those cars with low mileage later, and with a fixed loan their initial price would be virtual pennies. Plus they would be low mileage gas powered cars which will be increasingly rare in some states.

> Didn't Admiral Nelson marry Jeannie? ;-)

Major Nelson. Admiral Nelson wound up dumping his wife and living with a party girl who was married to an elderly rich nobleman. Apparently the old dude was cool with it.

Lady Emma Hamilton was her name. She was a working class girl who, by dint of extreme hotness, worked her way up through being the mistress of successively more powerful men until she wound up with a zillionaire as a husband and one of England's greatest heroes as a boyfriend.

Sadly, she blew through all the money after Hamilton (and later Nelson) died, and died impoverished.

Nelson famous last signal to the fleet before the Battle of Trafalgar, as they closed with the enemy was supposed to be "England confides every man will do his duty". But "confides" was not in the dictionary, and would've had to be spelled out, so Nelson's signal officer, a Lt. Pasco, suggested he change it to "expects", which was in the dictionary.

Nelson, according to account, said, "Very well, Mr. Pasco. Make it so."

Yep, Admiral Nelson talked like that, make it so.

Note the change sort of altered the tone to modern ears. Admiral Nelson was telling his men that England is certain, quite confident, they will serve her well. That meaning was understood by the fleet.

If you get a chance, do watch "Highway Patrol" with ol' Broderick Crawford. It's a hoot. Hell, most of the full episodes are on Youtube now. Show is probably public domain now.

The shootout scenes are hilarious. Crook jerk their guns and start shooting wild, and the Broderick and the boys jerk theirs and start shooting equally wild. Broderick like to shoot his little sub-nose from the hip.

Daily Mail has more info on the CDC emergency meeting and mRNA myocarditis in young people. There have been 226 cases that meet their guidelines as possible effects of the shots.

Of those, 3 are in ICU, 15 are still in the hospital, 41 have ongoing symptoms, and the rest have recovered.

624 >> Out of how many in the age cohort?

Don't know myself. It appears to the Pfizer and Modern mRNA versions that do this, and within a 2 -4 day window of the second shot. Preliminary look at those ratios show about a 40x increase in baseline rate of myocarditis amongst this age cohort.

But this appears to affect men more than women by a long shot, so if you take that into account, the baseline risk ratio will be even higher for men.

Israel has been vaccinating their young people a lot longer than we have, and it's essentially mandatory. And now the Israeli health ministry has confirmed the myocarditis risk for young men. Good news. It's not 40x, it's only 25x baseline for the young men cohort.

Of course, there can be differences in our population vs. theirs.

But anyway, Israel has enough data to say, yep, these here mRNA vaccines increase the risk of myocarditis by 25 times in the 16 - 24 yr. old male cohort.

The corresponds to an absolute risk for this vaccinated cohort of 1/3000 to 1/6000. There are about 22 million in this cohort of the US population. Thus if they all got vaccinated with mRNA shots, we could expect between 3000 to 7000 cases of myocarditis among them.

Those are much greater than the number of severe Covid cases in the same cohort.

95% is a relative efficacy number. Tell her to look at how that translates to absolute risk reductions. Also, any claims as to risk are idiocy. There isn't enough data to make any claim as to risk. It takes years for this sort of thing to be determined.

I've seen the claims as to efficacy ripped apart by detailed analysis of the limited (Pharma sponsored) clinical trials so far.

The most important one is in my name field.

Best-selling NYT non-fiction author and six-time Pulitzer nominee who couldn't get this incredibly well researched and well written article published anywhere, so it finally was released in a little podunk local rag because his wife is the editor. That emphasizes the problem with where we are as a society right now. We have data. We have knowledge. It is not being provided to us and we are being told to "trust Science" and "listen to credentials" instead.

What's the immunity rate? What are the blood types that have more problems? Even setting aside the mask flip-flops, Fauci accidentally said in an interview that he takes a bunch of over the counter medicines during the winter time to stave off cold viruses, but why was something like that never really pushed into the public discussion? Why do we have one-way aisles and mask requirements when the CDC *still* states that you can only possibly maybe get it if you're within 6' of someone for 15+ minutes?

But the most important of any of that is the article in my name field.

700 I'd also be interested in knowing why she will happily prescribe gabapentin and other medicines off-label to treat things they weren't tested on but rejects the same approach with a ten cent pill that has been proven safe for literally everyone over the last 40 odd years.
