Always remember: slavery in what is now the United States actually ended on October 18, 1867, when the United States took possession of Alaska, thus freeing the thousands of slaves (Indian, White, Black, and Hispanic) held by the Tlingit tribe.
The Tlingit used to run slave raiding expeditions against other tribes as far south as California, and were notorious for enslaving European mariners as well. ONT Greetings, Horde. Very thankful to be safely in my olde recliner this evening.
Just drove through about sixty miles of some of the heaviest rain and intense, strobing lightning that I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. How heavy was the rain? Dense enough to render nearby lightning as to being a veiled, indistinct flash, with no bolt visible, even when it clearly hit only a quarter mile away, based on the instant report of thunder from the flash. 20mph on I-45 South, and that was dancing on the edge. Got a family of four safely to their destination. This here bourbon? I earned it. Cheers! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 15, 2021 09:13 PM (QzJWU) 52

Tony Snow was about my age ... "only the good die young" perhaps. Or maybe the good that are effective get the heart attack gun (or whatever removal tactic they prefer) from the DeepState?
I know nothing of Tony's death, but so many patriots have died young, as they became effective advocates for (?) justice/truth. I would not be surprised to find at some future revealing, that many were victims of DeepState, operating the same way they have long operated in foreign countries. I recently heard an old "Bible classmate" of mine had died ... I did not know her that well, but it kinda hit me like a brick ... why are these good people dying so "young"? idk ... just the way life is? Many good people die passively .. some die more actively, for a "real cause" ... "these are the times that try men's souls." Posted by: illiniwek at June 15, 2021 09:23 PM (Cus5s) 95

Greenfield Village still is awesome. Worth a 2 day trip for the Americana. Posted by: clutch at June 15, 2021 09:16 PM (9UmRs) Years ago, when I still lived in Dearborn and was in the Bar Association we would have a Law Day lunch at the Eagle Tavern in the Village. Now, there were two parts to the tavern - the historic old 1840's tavern that faced on the village green, and in the back a couple of dining rooms that you could drive around back to and have group lunches or dinners with 1840's style food (pickled tomatoes, anyone?) After lunch we would go across the green to the courthouse which was from Illinois and one of those Lincoln would visit as an attorney as the cases and judges went from county to county on their circuit. Interesting to hear remarks from a state supreme court justice in such a venue. Afterwards, since I sensibly took the day off, I would go wander the village, and once I encountered one of my old teachers escorting a class. So I had to drop in, say hi, and walk along for a bit with these eighth graders. That was fun. Posted by: Mikey NTH - White Man: Threat or Menace? Chrome tapes were absolutely better than the iron-based ones. Not just on a scope, but audibly better. But the tape machine had to support it. > there was a special notch in the cassette casing for those and you supposedly had to have "high-end" equipment to actually utilize the special properties of the tape.
The base signal strength (the "bias") had to be higher to get any advantage with those tapes, because they were harder to magnetize. Which also meant that it was harder to DE-magnetize, which meant that the tapes lasted longer without getting fuzzed up. Easily-magnetized material would get bleed-through from previous layers of tape, especially noticeable if the music was loud. Generally though, the problem just manifested itself as fuzziness. One example where it was clearly audible was in the recording for Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". The part where the echoes occur *before* Plant sings? Tape bleedthrough. It was an accident, but they decided it was cool-sounding and kept it. Posted by: Just the Punchline at June 15, 2021 09:44 PM (XGAZE) 163

Some people claim to be able to hear that, but others think it's a load of bunk. I tend to go with "load of bunk", myself. But then I went to a whole lot of metal shows back in the days before they had Rules about sound levels that permanently impair your hearing, and also fired a lot of guns back before people routinely wore ear protection, so I might not be the best judge. I certainly can't hear a difference. But the difference between ferrite and metal/chrome tape was readily apparent to anyone. The CrO2 tapes were markedly better. They'd capture an accurate, wide WIDE range of analog frequencies, and with the right equipment, render those signals onto the tape with a minimum of hiss and a maximum dynamic range, reproduction and longevity.
It was about as close as analog tape got to the clean clarity of a CD, and the tape for a while, still out performed the CD in terms of warmth, tone and a full, open sound being sent to the amp(s). Took CDs quite a while to not sound like a squirrel in a vice, compression-wise. CrO2 never suffered that lack. It usually sounded just as good as your LP, if you did the LP to tape recording on your own, mid-fi or Hi-Fi gear. Lo-fi wasn't fit to play in the game. I never heard that, but they wouldn't sound very good unless played on equipment that had the special circuitry to handle them. Besides the bias, the equalization was different. You could probably have faked it if you had an external EQ, but those weren't all that common back then. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at June 15, 2021 09:54 PM (XGAZE) 183

@159: "I have heard it said that one of the problems with digital formats is that they narrow the band of audible sound- like a telephone does. Is that what is meant by 'better'?"
MP3 encoders have configurable high and low pass filters that do remove ultra low and high frequencies for the sake of better compression. Some people argue the highest frequencies are redundant given most people over twenty can't hear those tones, but others argue that even unheard, they help shape the overall sound that comes outta your speakers. Anyways, I'd only add that analog technologies like the cassette and vinyl records have something that digitial replacements do not: random number generation on playback. I suspect it's the subtle imperfections that change over time on every playback that some people truly prefer. Posted by: Walter Freeman at June 15, 2021 09:57 PM (+WWsf) 187

Yep. SOP for us back then was to buy an LP, dub the virgin copy onto a chrome tape, and put the LP away, only taking it back out when the tape got worn out/lost/stolen/borrowed and never returned. But the tape deck had to support it. It didn't do much good to dub onto a spendy high-bias tape and then play it back on a crappy boom box that didn't have the proper settings to deal with the bias and EQ. Shooting, construction, engines and loud noises all my life. My tinnitus sounds like cicadas, 24/7. And yet, I can also hear those wee, fine distinctions in sound, and hear what's going on outside on the street, no matter how muted or subtle. I can't do anything about the tinnitus. But I can work on the knobs and sliders on the soundboard in my brain-studio, amp up the good and filter out the bad. That's how I describe it, anyway. Initial exposure date in the US also affects data modeling of transmission rates. I'd guess most folks were off by three or six months, and that makes huge difference in exponential spread rates. You've gotta dial up transmissibility numbers to make projections line up with early real world data. I was pretty heavy into cassettes in the 80's because the Walkman changed everything. Oh, I couldn't afford those but cheap knockoffs came along pretty quick. My parents bought a nice stereo around that time that could record LP to cassettes. It had little left and right gauges, "de-hissing" technology and everything. Looked very cool. The tapes they recorded off those old albums were noticeably better than the originals with their patina of ancient scratches. Later I couldn't afford CD so I stuck with tape well into the 90's.

You should hear the lengths some lunatics go for "high fidelity", they don't really listen to music, they listen to their sound system, if that makes sense. Long discussions about which 12AX7 sounds best, Mullard (Great Britain) or Telefunken (Germany) or Sylvania (America) etc. Different internal construction techniques like "smooth plate" or "ribbed" can command a premium. Since vacuum tubes wear out, particularly output tubes or preamp tubes certain types, they command a premium. Maybe $150 a pop.
I do believe vacuum tube stereo equipment sounds "better" - not more accurate, but it sounds more like live music does in a club, from the standpoint of "wooly" bass and the way that solid state outputs distort. Odd order versus even order distortion. I can't prove it but I know what my ears like. The midrange 3D effects of a good tube tuner is absolutely amazing, which I thought not possible. Needs to be setup right with a good alignment, and the FM station be high quality. Not worth the trouble anymore, though. Posted by: Common Tater at June 15, 2021 10:43 PM (hYB//) 332

was shopping today at a local thrift store that requires unvaccinated employees to wear masks. A woman was talking with an employee that she apparently knows, and she asked the guy if he had gotten his shot yet. He said no, he really didn't want it. The woman was shocked and asked him if he wanted to wear the mask for the rest of his life. Then she proceeded to harangue him about getting the shot. He said no, his wife got her two shots and was really sick each time, so he decided it was not for him. The woman kept insisting he should get it, after all, she and her husband got theirs with no problem. Finally, though I normally do not insert myself into other peoples' conversations, I said to the guy, listen to your gut. Do what's right for you. You cannot UN-get this shot, so if you don't want it, don't get it. The woman huffed at me and left.

My experience with the modern reproduction vacuum tubes made in Yugoslavia, Russia, or China, is they sound great, but, they don't last worth a damn even if they don't meltdown. The NOS or good used American or European tubes are the only way to go, especially or particularly with rectifiers or audio outputs. They last way, way longer. Basically a glorified light bulb. Most curious to me as a non-medico type is the lack of any discussion on naturally conferred immunity. That is, having been exposed to the virus and recovered.
Initially, last year about this time I assumed that was the plan, with the "2 weeks to flatten the curve"; the tacit admission that a lot of people are going to die, simply because there is in fact no way to stop a virus. Figures I heard, essentially EVERYBODY would be exposed to it (sooner or later) and about half the country would contract it. And then a curious change seemed to happen. People started believing they could avoid the virus. Forever. Not only that, they believed that if they DID happen to catch it, that it was an automatic death sentence, or near enough. Then they started the "everybody stay in your basement till a vaccine is found." Completely bug nuts insane. Posted by: Common Tater at June 15, 2021 11:15 PM (hYB//) 441

Common Tater, pretty much summed it up there.
The only slight change is that the "15 days to flatten the curve" was only about trying to avoid exceeding medical (ICU) capacity. That it is, it was case-flow manipulation, only change in final score (benefit) would be fewer deaths attributable to insufficient medical capacity. Of course the entire idea/concept was notional, untested - that spread of acute cases of a highly infectious, already prevalent virus could be manipulated. Not aware of any evidence that it worked. Any of it. At any level, in any location. Which is the only, and obvious, legit focus of analysis now. Is it happening? Any reckoning for the CDC, or all the other "public health" outfits, globally (Sweden, Florida, you are dismissed early, you can watch this one)? And I think it is telling that no medical professionals are talking about an accurate test for the presence of antibodies, or natural immunity. In other words, if you want to exclude people, those who've had the experimental Covid and survived are fully equal in immunity as those who've been jabbed with the experimental vaccine.
Right? Or is there something they aren't telling us? No discussion on vulnerable groups for that matter. It may be that certain ethnic groups or blood types are hit harder. Well no, that's my point. I thought everybody knew that. "You're gonna get exposed to this particular virus. Repeatedly. No way around it. Governments can't stop a virus. You have maybe a 50/50 chance of actually contracting it, and there is unfortunately a small chance it will kill you." In recognition of this, the "two weeks to flatten the curve" made sense. At the time anyway, it sounded reasonable. Nothing since that time has sounded reasonable, particularly. Shutting down everything, was reminiscent, in a way, of the way the Obie administration shut down the WWII memorial and national parks during one of the perennial "budget" snits congress goes through. Just pure spite. I think. Posted by: Common Tater at June 15, 2021 11:34 PM (hYB//) 473

The answer was, we are not addressing that scenario. LOL!! Yeah, now there's a prescription for confidence! This is like a really bad science fiction movie. The Pod People meets Rosemary's Baby. The goal of vaccination is herd immunity. If we're at herd immunity per se, if you've had the 'Rona and survived, that's what we want. It could be, an exoerimental virus coupled with an experimental vaccine is bad shit. It could be either by itself is bad shit. It ain't my fault there is no trust in out "leaders" or institutions. They squandered it many, many moons ago. Now they plead "Trust Us!" just a little bit too much. I still don't understand how this is still a thing. I'm a recurve/longbow guy and even *I* know that cheaterbows (xbows) are superior. More poundage = flatter trajectory = smaller margin of error As far as Boobs go, a well-endowed woman would be more effective with an xbow because recurve/longbows require her to pull the string INTO the boobage instead of around it, thus shortening her draw length and turning a 50# bow into a 35#. She'll have an even harder time if her arrows are spined for a 50# draw. Posted by: Hoyt's Paid Turkish Provocateur at June 15, 2021 11:49 PM (83lwH) 488

For all Jim Morrison's and early (27) death, he accomplished everything he wanted to do and pretty spectacularly. Listen to some of their live stuff of his better performances. The whole Laurel Canyon scene was completely wacked, and has been since the earliest days of Hollywood. If you dig around the intertubes, there's an excellent book by Dave McGowan "Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine, The Strange But Mostly True Story of the Hippies in Laurel Canyon" (something like that) Center for Informed America website has it archived. He talks about all the 60s bands and Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wasn't some sort of outlier. Many of them were like that to some degree or another, or had bizarre ... beliefs. He struck me from what i've read and heard (i have his post-doors solo stuff on vinyl) and saw, that he was a man very much at peace with himself. Krieger played/plays a few doors songs with BOC. BOC started out as west coast psychedelic (on the east coast) but changed their sound to be more like Black Sabbath from England. However, they are the direct progeny of the doors. The Doors could've played 7 Screaming Diz Busters and the interplay between Ray and Robbie would've been mindblowing, and Densmore would've been in heaven. Jim would nail it.

A blessing and a curse. In Southern CA, the ground cover tends towards "pickleweed", aka "iceplant". A succulent, it looks nice n' green as you drive down the freeway. Under the green though, is a tough, viney dried plant structure that's cover for every manner of vermin under the sun. Homeless need apply. And getting rid of the stuff? Edward Snowden is now with Substack. His first piece was today. He writes about what has happened with the internet: This is the reality of the fully commercialized mainstream internet: our exposure to an indigestible mass of shortest-form opinions that are purposefully selected by algorithms to agitate us on platforms that are designed to record and memorialize our most agitated, reflexive responses. These responses are, in turn, elevated in proportion to their controversy to the attention --and prejudice --of the crowd. In the resulting zero-sum blood sport that public reputation requires, combatants are incentivized to occupy the most conventionally defensible positions, which reduces all politics to ideology and splinters the polis into squabbling tribes. The products of the irreconcilable differences this process produces are nothing more than well-divided "audiences," made available to the influence of advertisers, and all that it cost us was the very foundation of civil society: tolerance. "My Old Papa said that given the choice, he would go with Korea in December over Ft. Jackson in August any day."
JFC, that's insane. Korea should be renamed to Freeze-Bake. I was there in 1990-1991 at Camp Casey. I was on the returning leg of a 2 mile run for time in December when I realized that despite wearing my PT outfit under my sweats under a nomex running suit with knit cap and gloves on, my fucking arms and legs were getting cold. Not to mention the layer of frost on my knit cap from my breath. As my old man used to say, "When it's too hot, I just want to lay down. When it's too cold, I hurt." I found Army basic in 1989 at FLW in Missouri to be mostly boring, utterly fucking boring. Painfully boring at times. I spent the first half of it in sneakers because of tendinitis I suffered because the uniform supplying people insisted I wore a size 6.5W boot when the reserve unit I'd been with the previous year gave me wonderfully-fitting 8R (I'm mostly a 7.5W but certainly not a 6.5). They finally relented and gave me 7.5Ws. No problem. A few of us made chess sets and that helped relieve the boredom. I was the only guy out of 5 or 6 dudes late for formation one Sunday afternoon NOT to get company commander punishment. He declined because I established to his satisfaction that I was not late. I did, however, get KP twice in the final week of training, July 6 to 13. That was actually awesome since the dining hall was air-conditioned, and once everything was cleared, we could eat the leftovers they had cooked and hang out. Yay for civilian-run dining halls! The night field practical exercise with live fire, explosives, barbed wire, etc. That was a lot of fun. Intense too.

I was 21, in shape, familiar with how to fire a rifle (albeit a single shot, bolt action .22), knew what reveille and taps were, knew the ranks, had been in a reserve unit for a year, and wasn't worth the drill sergeants spending any time on (they never had enough), it was boring. The actual training was fun; the sitting around which there was more than enough of, was tedious. I didn't even have to spend any effort polishing my inspection boots -- they were the 8Rs I'd brought with me from my reserve unit. I kept them polished as my inspection boots.

Noam Chomsky became rich (through DoD contracts) for
restating the ancient truism that "who determines the words, wins the argument". Posted by: Cunning Miklosian Liguistics at June 16, 2021 01:39 AM (QzkSJ) Chomsky got famous by claiming that no one could understand how thinking was done, then by telling people they could control the masses by the power of voice alone. For the first he is known for developing the initial argument that allowed all the other researchers to have a common point on which they all agreed was wrong, and for the second, Chomsky didn't understand people or how they think, nix one word that is useful and your subjects will find a substitute. If you want to control thinking and behaviour you want to use Skinner's theories. Click training works for people as well. Especially when put in positions where they are not allowed mental time to think and reflect. Posted by: Kindltot at June 16, 2021 02:29 AM (ySM85) 679
