Okay, this made me laugh. I did lose my keys 2 minutes after walking in the neighborhood pool today. After 5 minutes, I realized that when I dumped the pool ID card box and then put it back together (not my finest moment), I put my keys down while I reorganized it. Lifeguard was clueless when he got back to the entrance table on whose keys they were (since I did this at the change), but I literally did the "retrace" steps b/c how do you lose keys in 20 ft of walking in 2 minutes? At least that's what my kids said b/c they just wanted to swim...

Had an almost panic attack while driving home once as I suddenly freaked about where my keys were.

The answer to that question is in the statement. Also remember a time I walked between living room and bed room (at least) 3 times as I went to get something, forgot what it was, retraced my steps, then forgot by the time I got to the bedroom. Kicker is the finally time I kept repeating what I was going for and found it.

Then got to the living room and couldn't remember why I'd gone to get it.

Mama and Papa Robin dutifully incubated the eggs, and when they hatched out into baby blackbirds, the adult blackbird drove them off.

So the fledgling blackbirds, 4 of them, settled into one of my spruce trees. I got the .22, and nailed 3 of the four chicks, and Mama and Papa. Ma and Pa Robin are avenged!

parasites. They punted the eggs out of a robin's nest, and laid their
own there. Mama and Papa Robin dutifully incubated the eggs, and when
they hatched out into baby blackbirds, the adult blackbird drove them
off.

So the fledgling blackbirds, 4 of them, settled into one of my

Locked female goose in a little shed that is in the barnyard with the chickens. Male goose came back four days later, beat all to hell and bleeding, figured he'd die, but nope, four days of recovery and he's back in business.

In any event, apparently one of the chickens laid an egg in the shed and the female goose hatched it out. Not sure how I should handle it. Really don't want to mess with goose over the chick, because geese are tough mofos, but not sure a goose will raise a chick either. Strange.

If you follow the Koran and Hadiths, Mecca and Medina were really important trading centers in the time of Mohammed.

Oddly though the Romans didn't talk much about them and never tried to conquer them even though they were next door to the Roman Empire at its height. One would presume the Romans (and Persians) would have been a lot more interested in taking the Mecca of Muslim history then all the blood and treasure they spent on Armenia...

Too dry. Popcorn pops because of superheated water inside, sealed in by the hard outer shell. When the pressure gets high enough, it pops.

If there's not enough water inside, it won't build up enough pressure to pop.

656 I believe some past G7s have had sort of "guest" attendees, which would be like South Africa this time. Usually connected to some notable ongoing development, or something. Not sure why South Africa would be there now.

And of course there was the G7+1, when RUSSIA! was invited, part of the (failed) effort to kind of civilize and engage that sad country.

Of course, apart from wealth and technology, there could be reasons to keep the social and political trends in the G7 at arm's length, if you're Russia, or many other places. Now.

732 Dude In MI, you should think of Bitcoin as an elaborate way to back a currency with electricity. "Bitcoin mining" is a lot of complicated math (requiring lots of computing power, hence electricity) intended to cryptographically secure the transactions done with Bitcoin, so that a forger/hacker/thief can't create fraudulent transactions.

Posted by: Locarno at June 15, 2021 12:16 AM (3WLXg)

733 Bitcoin "mining" is kind of like paying a whole fleet of knitting grannies to knit dick cozies for trannies that have no dicks. The fact that you spent "money" to accomplish that feat is supposed to endow the useless knitwork with value. See: marx' labor Theory of Value.

The lyrics are....well, pretty fucking Low T. It might be a cute song, but just not adaptable to metal because of the original beat. 751 The point of currency is to have something that is (1) Hard To Fake and (2) Maintains Value. The actual value of the currency-stuff is immaterial: if God supplied the world with one trillion completely uncounterfeitable plastic ping-pong balls that could not be replicated by any mortal means, they would be an amazing medium of exchange even though the value of ping-pong balls is trash. It would be both Hard To Fake (cannot be made by men, can reliably be assayed as divinely created plastic) and Maintain Value (supply is rock solid stable, never added to).

Gold meets both criteria because gold is rare, huge gold finds are rarer, and it's easy to determine whether something is gold or not. Stable and hard to fake: great! Gold is also valuable in its own right, though, and this tends to confuse people into thinking money necessarily has to have intrinsic value on its own. It doesn't.

Bitcoin is an attempt (so far successful, as a first draft of the idea) of creating something that is stable (supply is rigidly determined by an algorithm to grow more and more slowly as time goes on) and hard to fake (complicated cryptology that grows more complicated as time goes on).

What is a bitcoin? The best way to describe is an abstract mathematical entity defined by cryptographic mathematical operations. If you're schooled in abstract mathematical thinking, it will make sense. If not, it won't.

The motivation came from libertarian (even Austrian) notions of an ideal currency that would be free from manipulation by governments, and not easily counterfeitable.

The definition of a bitcoin lies in the structure used to record transactions and ownership of the entities. Mining is the process of doing all that complex cryptographic number crunching.

The definition was such that only a finite number of bitcoins can be created, and the time it takes to create a new one gets harder and harder, taking longer and longer, as the number of bitcoins created increased. It would take an infinite amount of time to create all bitcoins. One would get only asymptotically close. The last bitcoin (actually fraction thereof) would take forever.

We'd catch their grownup kin. If it was lunch or dinnertime, cleaned and into the skillet in 10 minutes or less. Otherwise? Wrapped and stuffed into a shaded snowbank, even in August. Until dinnertime. Cornmeal breading, deep Crisco in the skillet, and eat until food-drunk, and then some. Worth the three day hike from the trailhead to camp, and then back.

Protagonist is 5 when his father, a captain, is killed in 1915 in WW1. I could make it 1916. Doesn't really matter; I'm just trying to keep the math simple. It's not about WW1. That just sets the background for the story. The story itself arises out of a poem (well, song lyrics) I wrote some years ago to an old Northumbrian tune called "The Collier's Daughter".

I have a Ruger Hawkeye African Rifle, in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. It is a 1 in 250, in that chambering. Wears a Nightforce 2.5x10x40 scope, atop. Ebony fore-end, barrel band sling swivel, ramp and gold bead front sight. The walnut on this rifle is incredible. It was the distributor's SHOT show display rifle for 2016-2017. (Lipsey's Distributors) I bought it unfired, with all the original box, paperwork and accessories.

I modestly suggest sticking close to some real people and events.

Actual history is beyond mere powers of fiction. For example, I just got (have not read) "X Troop-the Secret Jewish Commandos of WWII".

I also met Sir Fitzroy McLean on Korcula. And heard stories. Some shit you just can't make up.

I'm looking to move 150ish miles inland, to deeply wooded rolling country in East Central Texas. I'll miss the coast, the saltwater and salt air with every fiber of my being.

But I've got to escape to a less densely populated, more natural resource survivable locale. 20 ish acres oughta do. I'm ready to close as soon as the title search says "go!"

Just reading. The housing and real estate market in Montana is going nuts. Lots of very wealthy people are bugging out to Montana. We are talking year on year increases of 41%.

They are actually pricing the locals out of their own towns.

One of the first rules is to be the first to panic. Remember the "fire in the crowded theater" thing? It used to be a big problem in the whole days.

If you happened to notice a fire getting started, you just quietly headed for the nearest exit, as fast as you could, but without tipping anyone off. If you yelled "Fire!", you'd be killed in the stampede.

I think that's what a lot of our wealthy elites are doing right now. The crowded theaters are the cities and even the 'burbs nearby.

849 I may confess, however, that I do not feel quite like a fish out of water in a Moron assembly where English is spoken. I am a child of the House of Horde. I was brought up in my father's house to believe in democracy. "Trust the people." That was his message. I used to see myself cheered at meetings and in the streets by crowds of workingmen way back in those aristocratic Miklosian days when as Disraeli said "the world was for the few, and for the very few."
