113 Part of the appeal for me with these classic age painters is the use of light whether exterior or interior. It always seems appropriate for the scene. Add to that the scenes themselves: often playful like this one, composed and calm, celebratory. No nihilism, no sourness, just enjoyment of life. Steen is so effective. You can hear the delighted laughter of the children, the barking dog, the girl's recorder just by looking at it. Then add the highlights like the sheen on the older girl's skirt against the mild earth tones and silver of the utensils. Wonderfully effective and a delight to view.

It was a few centuries later but I wonder if art like this was an influence on those late 1800s Scandi painters with their family and pleasant scenes.

161 So, after a month and a half, two false starts, a week in customs and finally good performance by my local USPS, the prints I accidentally bought from China arrived yesterday and have been unpacked.

To say it wasn't worth the wait, money or aggravation would be an understatement. The canvas stock isn't great. The stretcher bars are of poor quality and it isn't put together splendidly well, though it is okay. The frames seriously suck, though look okay from a decent distance. Let this be a lesson: watch the warning signs and don't order from abroad because it looks okay at first blush.

On the plus side, though, they are all here finally and I have two of them up. Miranda (https://is.gd/IAshnc) is up over my stereo in the living room. Helga (https://is.gd/g8h0oD) is above my desk. The Water Carrier (https://is.gd/IZ80EN) doesn't have a home yet.

Inflation is good for debtors and homeowners, as it makes debts more manageable and financing is easier, along with a greater carrying capacity for debt. It's all good and since employment is totally great, comrade, all is well. The only ones harmed by inflation are the hoarders and wreckers who refuse to invest because they'd rather sit on their gold like Scrooge McDuck.

I generally like Wyeth. I love that particular piece. It hit me like a ton of bricks. It's also the reason I ended up on Night Flyer Art Prints, LLC. They had it available as a print when my regular venues didn't.

I found the reason for that a few weeks ago, long after I had placed the order when it was far too late to reverse course. That piece is fairly recent, and likely copyrighted. China's glorious and perfect IP protection being what it is, however, made that not matter on that particular site, which I didn't realize - and they didn't exactly go out of their way to indicate that they were Chinese.

Lesson learned. Shitty, pain-in-the-ass lesson learned.

That's the natural backlash resulting from the unnatural state in which you confine the animal. Animals aren't property to be owned. Animals enslaved by humans lash out, as is their nature. They are imprisoned by the billions and held as slaves, yet few sound the alarm.

We as a species dominate animals in unconscionable ways. We enslave them. We breed them for our own purposes. We slaughter them en masse so we can feast upon their corpses and wear their skins. It's appalling. A cat scratching you is a fairly minor consequence of what you're doing by arrogating to yourself the right to own a living being.

The same people that look back with horror on the disasters of the past - from genocide to slavery to general oppression - often engage in those exact same behavior against the modern world's chattels. Those same people never call for total animal liberation. It's ironic.

238 Biometric data is also just ultimately 1s and 0s that can be hacked. Passwords can at least change. Your fingerprint can't.
Since the number of passwords you need just keeps climbing the ability to change passwords and keep them secure goes down. And obviously as a very practical way to view this passwords don't work, at all any more, to truly keep anything secure.

It isn't unusual now to see someone having the same password for RandomForumDOTcom and their bank - the password requirement for the former makes the latter MUCH less secure.

On the enforcement side, I am serious we should be executing hackers publicly.

Three forms for authentication. There's something you know (a password), something you have (a token), and something you are (biometrics).

You can change what you know. You can replace what you have. What you *are,* however, is immutable. Biometrics make sense in that they are guaranteed if assessed properly, but the risk with it is that if the biometric gets leaked, you can be impersonated *forever* because that one cannot change.

Yup. It is easy to go too far on password requirements. I used to work on a government system and their rules were absolutely insane. IIRC, they were: exactly ten characters, at least two symbols, two numerics could not be side-by-side, no characters could repeat anywhere in the password, password expires every 45 days, current password cannot have any character in the same position as any of the 10 prior passwords, passwords can never be reused.

That is an impossible standard, and writing them down wasn't an option, either, because we had no writing implements in our workspace for security reasons. I ended up using an entirely bad, predictable and insecure method for my passwords: keyboard patterns that I shifted to the right or left on each reset. The security standard was so restrictive that it was totally ineffective.

Fun fact: "Thing" was played by Ted "Lurch" Cassidy. In the very few scenes where Lurch and Thing are together, the show used either split screen or an anonymous grip's (as it were) grip.

And in the episode "Morticia Meets Royalty," Thing's female counterpart, Lady Fingers, was played by Carolyn Jones.

Ambassador to Ghana, Czechoslovakia and Chief of the Office of Protocol. Jean Kirkpatrick was the first female U.N. Ambassador.

Temple-Black was an excellent ambassador and lovely person, Jean Kirkpatrick is why I wanted to be a diplomat. No wonder I didn't fit in.

Which, to my mind, raises the obvious solution - if the people who hate Special Ed and Speed Bump's posts would simply not comment, the lack of attention might drive those two nickelfuckers away.

It was a combination of audiences not wanting her to grow up, a lack of decent scripts and, as well, simply time. She had been on the screen for nearly ten years and her later pictures had a cheap look to them. She seemed to have been burned out and disillusioned with Hollywood by then.

Bearing in mind the caveat that very little rumor you hear about the sins of Tinseltown can be proven, there is a persistent story that the exclusive brothel "Mae's" (the real-life counterpart to the club of lookalikes in Mulholland Drive) had as its most-requested call girl a barely-legal "acrtress" who was a dead ringer for the young Temple.

Somewhere in my collection of books I have a reminiscence of a writer who was brought to Mae's for a night, though I do not recall which "star" he slept with. I'll look for it this weekend.

374 . . . there is a persistent story that the exclusive brothel "Mae's" (the real-life counterpart to the club of lookalikes in Mulholland Drive) had as its most-requested call girl a barely-legal "actress" who was a dead ringer for the young Temple.

Is that the place that, when Carole Lombard, who was married to Clark Gable at the time, heard there was a ringer for her, she immediately laughed and said, "Don't tell Clark -- he'll want to go!"?

=========

To be completely fair, a brothel of movie star lookalikes would have fit in perfectly with Mulholland Drive, and if it had become a television show instead of morphing into a movie, I imagine one such place would have eventually appeared. It's about the land of broken dreams rather explicitly, and that would fit perfectly.

Yes. And there's a persistent rumor that Joan Crawford would "fill in" for her double on occasion, particularly enjoying it when her paramours would marvel over her plastic surgeon and tell her she was a dead ringer for the real Crawford.

IIRC, the place had a Claudette Colbert double, as well, and it was nicknamed "Mae's" because the madam passed herself off as West.

I wanted to include a scene like that in The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, but 1917 is a little too early for that. If I ever get to book 3, set in 1922, I might be able to write a scene in a proto-Mae's.

We need a place like that now. I can think of a LOT of modern and fairly recent actresses, and vintage ones too, whose doubles would be very popular. . . .

Eromero, I have no idea how much demand I will have for my camper kitchen capabilities or my propane, but if I have a free burner, I am happy to share. I have a two-burner cooktop inside the rig and a Mr. Heater free-standing cooking thingy that attaches to my outdoor propane spigot doodad. (I don't know what these things are called.) I still need to get a length of hose for the outdoor spigot to connect the Mr. Heater.
