The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity, or registering wrongs.
Charlotte Bronte

Quote II

“I know free college is a left-wing thing, but is it really liberal for someone who doesn’t go to college and makes less money to pay for people who do go and make more? Especially since colleges have turned into giant luxury daycare centers with overpaid babysitters anxious to indulge every student whim.”Bill Maher

*

Quote III

“The bottom line is the left is not intellectually honest about racism. They use it when they can for political gain, and when it serves no purpose it’s totally ignored. It’s a shame that they take something so serious so lightly and in essence make a mockery of all those afflicted.” Donald Trump, Jr.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Quote IV

"They can’t control us out here. I’m tired of being controlled and I’m tired of people trying to tell me what to do." Nurse Jennifer Bridges

Just hold on a second here. I thought criminal defense attorneys were open minded individuals.

In a fatal case of “bait and switch” or “false advertising,” a Virginia Tech football player told police he punched a sexual partner five times in the face and stomped on him after discovering the person he thought was a woman was actually a man, according to arguments presented Wednesday in a Montgomery County courtroom.

During an emotional bond hearing, Etute’s attorney, Jimmy Turk, told the court, “I’m not saying what happened was acceptable, but this was more than someone just showing up to an apartment and punching someone.”

“Nobody deserves to die, but I don’t mind saying, don’t pretend you are something that you are not,” he said. “Don’t target or lure anyone under that perception. That’s just wrong.”

Call me Misanthropic. I thought private enterprise was to produce a product/service that the customer wanted. The owner(s) risk and are either rewarded or fail. But, I don't believe private business has a civic dutyto reopen after the great Chinese Kung Flu debacle. The civic duty was for the various state, local and federal governments not to become the authoritarian Stasi.

On a walk outside his office in downtown Washington, D.C., Greg Meyer stops to peer in through the glass windows of a fast-casual lunch spot called Leon. The exposed brick interior gives it a cozy coffeehouse vibe. But the lunch crowd is nowhere to be seen. The whole place is dark.

"The pandemic put them out of business," says Meyer, region head for Brookfield Properties, which owns almost all the buildings on this block and hundreds more around the country.

Now with vaccines available on demand and infection rates falling, Meyer believes businesses have a civic duty to bring workers back.

"It's time now," he says. "We've got to do everything we can do to get people back as quickly as possible."

Fifteen months into the pandemic, Brookfield's office buildings in Washington are only at about 14% occupancy, down from 80% in normal times. Companies that ordered their employees to work from home in March 2020 are only now starting to bring them back into the office. Some are waiting until fall to bring back workers in significant numbers, while others have no plans to return to pre-pandemic work arrangements at all.

I have your civic duty right here Greggy, Keystone XL project terminated due to Anti-American resident of the White House Uncle Paste Eater Joe.

Environmentalists secured a win on Wednesday when Canada's TC Energy Corp and the Albertan provincial government announced they would cancel the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, more than a decade after it was first proposed.

The 1,200-mile line was an effort to carry more Canadian crude through the US, including Montana, South Dakota, to Steele City, Nebraska. The pipeline would have moved 35 million gallons of crude each day, connecting to other pipelines that feed refineries along the Gulf Coast, according to The Associated Press.

A Dem. Gov. ruling unconstitutionally? Color me shocked. Shocked I am.

It took 15 months for a judge to finally apply the Constitution against the most severe and arbitrary violations of our most basic civil liberties, but it's better late than never.

On Tuesday, Boone County, Kentucky, Circuit Judge Richard A. Brueggemann issued a permanent injunction against all of Gov. Andy Beshear's COVID restrictions, including the mask mandate. Unlike the few judicial victories for civil liberties over the past year, this one was broad and sweeping, as it declared these mandates unconstitutional. In granting declaratory relief to a store owner who didn't want to enforce masks on customers, Judge Brueggemann ruled that "all emergency orders imposed by said Defendants, or that are being continued by said Defendants, are unconstitutional, void and without any legal effect."

Although Gov. Beshear planned to let the mask mandate expire on Friday

"A person who represents himself has a fool for a client."

Wall is filing the lawsuit after the Transportation Security Administration refused to let him board a flight out of OIA last week for not wearing a mask even though he says he has a qualifying disability, court records show. Wall said he has general anxiety disorder and previous attempts of wearing a mask have instigated symptoms of a panic attack, including hyperventilating and other breathing trouble. He carries a special card to evade mask-wearing during the pandemic, the lawsuit reads.

“I am currently stranded at my mother’s house in The Villages,” Wall, who is representing himself, writes in the suit.

He is essentially seeking to do away with airport mask mandates and mandatory coronavirus testing for international travel, records show.

The Villages? Isn't that the place full of GILFS?

YOLO! Genius Award Winners.

JUNE 8--Responding to a 9:10 AM tip about a couple trysting in a Florida park, a patrolman discovered a man performing a sex act on his girlfriend within the “children’s crawling tunnel” at Pocahontas Park in Vero Beach, according to an arrest affidavit.

When the cop arrived at the park Friday morning, he reported observing Sharon Finlay, 52, “laying on her back face up, with her jean shorts pulled around her ankles (nude) with her legs spread apart and vagina exposed.”

Finlay’s companion, Germain Jackson, 44, was atop Finlay “with his face within [her] crotch area.”

Asked what they were doing, Finlay told the cop the couple was “making out.” Jackson was more direct. “I was eating some pussy,” he said.

Adjacent to the playground's crawling tunnel (seen below) was a bottle of Gulf Crest vodka and two cans of Four Loko. Finlay reportedly explained that, “We were both drinking the Four Loko and the vodka, you only live once.”

What must have been an acrimonious divorce turns into Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

One Richmond family got a shocking delivery last month when 80,000 pennies were dumped on their front lawn. Now, they're using the money to help those in need.

"I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer," Avery Sanford, a Deep Run High School senior, said. "He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, 'What are you dumping in my yard?' She didn't know who it was until he shouted, 'It's your final child support payment."

The act had an impact on the teenager.

27 I get Maher's objection to having everyone foot the bill for luxury daycare aka "College".

But it is a lot worse than that. Because those who seek multiple graduate degrees will whine that only the well heeled will be able to afford that third doctorate - so there should be no limit to how much education is paid for by others.

Then there is the issue of if its free, why am I stuck with a community college when so-n-so gets a free ride at an Ivy?

Is a degree required for working a fast food gig? Will people late in life be able to join in on the grift? With Open Borders, does this mean anyone and everyone who can squeeze on in? Won't they have to dummy down "education" even more to guarantee their Diversity Inclusion and Equity goals to even the most severely retarded?

What especially galls me about "free college" is that it isn't really for everyone, either. You're only welcome on a college campus today if you're some kind of minority.

So I was constantly roling and then falling out of bed. My mom had to set pillows and blankets by the bed to catch my fall. That's what the last picture makes me think of.

Walter Freeman, oh man. In the mid 1980s, the city of Long Beach tried opening up a mall right smack in the middle of their then-dilapidated and ugly downtown full of abandoned old brick buildings. They even deleted some streets for it.

Opened about 1986 and by 1992 the place was abandoned and rusting. It had one, maybe two good years before becoming a disaster. City fathers didn't get that malls were mostly a suburban thing, and you need people with actual money nearby to buy stuff.

Today it's been partitioned away into stores on the street, parking and a few other uses.

With them threatening even now to recycle the tyranny this fall.

This also clobbers the supply chain industry. You make ketchup, do you return to pre-Covid production distribution of packets, restaurant and home packaging? How much inventory and variety do you want to potentially lose in your freezers? For every step in the chain.

You are a sales weasel for any number of vendors, how sure are you that the restaurants will be back long enough to lure you into staying rather than trying to find another industry for your commissions? This lock-down crap wrecked their client lists.

You are an insurer, or banker, what makes you think that your client will be solvent or have conditions that make risk assessment even close to plausible?

Local mall has 2 anchor stores empty, though Sears own the space on one of those. And of the other anchor stores? Macy' and JC Penneys are half the remaining tenants. I'd guess no one is giving the management company loans based on that collateral. 163 Re restaurants:

For the first time since before the pandemic, I went back to my fave cajun place in Santa Ana, Ritter's, for lunch.

They were closed. Turns out that nowadays, post-pandemic, they're only open 4pm to 10pm on weekdays. Only open all day on Sat and Sun.

Pre-pan, they were open all day every day.

Anyway, good news: I was only a half hour early so waited 'til 4. Also, once they opened, although they had fewer tables, every one was occupied by the time I left.

(Also they had to trim down their menu and got rid of my favorite dish, the seafood bouillebaise. I ended up having crab pan roast instead, with a calamari appetizer. Still pretty good.)

Anyway, I'm just glad they survived.

Walsh argued that lackluster job growth was actually due to fears of contracting COVID-19 and a lack of child care.

"I do not feel that the $300 bonus is keeping people out of work," he said, later adding: "If there are reasons people aren't going back to work, it's lack of childcare, it's school still being hybrid, it's people who haven't been vaccinated, people are taking care of their loved ones."

I have had the pleasure of seeing multiple videos where the stupid parents of these students are whining about how government school is failing at their core mission and is replacing it with metric-less curriculum of CRT, sodomy and other forms of sexual deviancy.

Instead of acting like loving parents and removing their spawn from the clutches of the evil government sadists, they fruitlessly bitch and moan as if these feckless assholes running the school system care.

One thing is definitely in common and quite manifest concerning the education cartel - they are all, no exceptions, narcissistic sociopathic sadists.

This my friend is the Austrian Business Cycle in real life.
There is so much cheap money out there to be borrowed that the builder will risk building out more on the hope that the money will keep coming and that the potential buyers can get the same loans and the tenants can get the same loans to start those new businesses that sell to people who borrow money.

Once the interest rate looks like it is going to go up, or the money runs out, the whole thing collapses and all the bad debts get liquidated. Can't stop it now.

Andrew Jackson and his wife had a technical problem with their marriage. Because of a clerical error, he married her while she was still married to another man.

They thought she was divorced, she wasn't. He ended up having to marry her a second time.

John Qunicy Adams used this as a campaign smear in the 1828 election, accusing Jackson of being an immoral adulterer. The scandal ended up being a contributor to Jackson's wife's death immediately after the election.

Jackson blamed Adams for his wife's death for the rest of his life.

400 > In Argentina and Chile during their economic troubles, that happened a lot and there was a lot of squatting going on.

During the oil price crash here in Alaska back in the '80s, a lot of rental properties built during the pipeline boom went into foreclosure.

The banks were desperate (and a bunch of them went bust). I'm talking "Free eight-plex if you open a Christmas Club account" desperate. They'd give mortgages to anyone with a pulse and a signature, just to get the property off their hands.

One scam artist managed to quickly acquire a thousand or so apartments that way. Then he just started pocketing all the rent money for the six months or so it took the banks to foreclose again and left for Parts Unknown. I don't believe he was ever caught.

Will Rogers said once that all the Okies going to California would make both states smarter, which has caused a lot of "ah-ha-ha. . . eh?" since then.

What most people forget is that when the Okies were being starved out of Oklahoma in the dustbowl and the depression, Upton Sinclair had started running for Governor of California on the platform of EPIC, "End Poverty In California" where he was proposing to give every resident a job in a state run cooperative, without being able to tell anyone what the jobs were, who would pay, or even how it would be run. So "idiots leave Oklahoma, and California learns why EPIC is a really bad idea"
Will Rogers was pretty savvy.

There was a song written about it, by Woodie Guthrie, who of course being some flavor of socialisti couldn't understand that. The tune was called "Do Re Mi", meaning money. "Well believe it or not, you won't find it so hot, if you ain't a got that do re mi"

490 There is a caffeine and kola nut infused dark chocolate available called Scho-ka-kola; it was an energy chocolate in Germany since the 1930s, the story goes, the troops enjoyed it, but they also were apprehensive, knew they were totally fooked when it was issued, because some big battle was iminent. It's just the ticket for a road trip, it isn't bad chocolate. I bought some for a hiking trip before the 'Rona, which was cancelled. So naturally I ate that stuff. Zing!!

Very. Part of it of course was the "you're marketing to teenagers" bull shit. And then there's the "mixing a stimulant and depressant health risk!" stuff It just reminds me of in the 2000's and one of the few times I looked at my college newspaper and they were whining about the risks of mixing alcohol and caffeine like in jaeger bombs. You can still buy red bull and Jaeger though. And I bet plenty of college kids wind up in the hospital every weekend from drinking too many of those.

585 I had one of those electric aerogarden kits and ended up with cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, etc. The basil was absolutely fantastic stuff in spaghetti sauce. But I had mint, didn't know what to do with that. Somebody suggested Mint Juleps.

So I made a simple syrup out of cane sugar, and infused and muddled the mint into that. Crushed ice, and Bourbon.

Hot Damn, those are tasty! I can see why they are popular on a hot day.

602 Bill Maher got it half right. Yes, "free college" redistributes wealth from non-college graduates, who presumably have less of it, to college graduates (or more accurately, mostly to their parents). But even worse, poor kids generally don't pay for college, or at least not nearly as much. The people who pay full price are from upper-middle class and rich families. So "free college" is actually, in most cases, redistributing wealth from non-college graduates to parents who make a very nice income.

604 Yeah, I sniffed that site out a while back, Jean. Thought about buying more. They sell it at a decent price, a sleeve of 10 tims, about $3 per tin, 100g which is in line with a regular chocolate bar.

The one thing, it's not a good idea to order it this time of year, it can arrive completely melted and fused together due to heat. It's supposed to have the equivalent of a cup of strong coffee per 50 grams. I suppose that's about right. They make a milk chicolate version too, which would really be prone to melting.

Hershey had "Tropical Chocolate" which wasn't supposed to melt, but was like eating candles. The US Army had Hershey make the "D Ration" bar, of which they made millions, and were also said not to be very good. Aka "Hitler's Secret Weapon", the Army specified that it should not taste much better than a boiled potato, and I guess they did a pretty good job.

You know, I don't believe anything the govt. says anymore. This "Russian hacker" narrative is falling apart. Reading the story of how the FBI recovered the bitcoin ransom, it went like this.

There are bitcoin (and other crypto currency) exchanges set up. The "wallets" they set up to "hold" bitcoin are *custodial*. Think of it as just like a bank. They hold your money (well, not exactly all of it), and you have ownership of it.

Same way with the exchanges. They hold the actual bitcoin. They just give you ownership. And this is how the FBI was able to confiscate it. The private keys are held by the exchanges, not the owners.

So, what these hackers did was the equivalent of say a kidnapper, accepting ransom payment by check and depositing into a bank account.

The exchange was most likely Coinbase, physically located in California. So, we're to believe that sophisticated state sponsored, or state "allowed" hackers would be so stupid as to use custodial exchange servers in the United States.

Not very likely. They were smart enough to make penetrate and cripple US fuel supply and food supply infrastructure, but this stupid when it came to handling the ransom payment?

703 You know, I have resisted trying to learn what bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are and how they work. MEGLO. Just wasn't that interested. But this business with the FBI recovering the ransom motivated me to look into it.

What is a bitcoin, or a unit of some cryptocurrency? Good question. It's an abstract mathematical object of sorts. It has no physical existence. It's an idea, so to speak. It exists only in a public "ledger" concerned with transactions involving it.

If your mind is trained in abstract mathematical thought, you can get it. If not, you won't. It won't make any sense.

Anyway, bitcoins exist in this abstract space of this public ledger. The system is designed to require it to be public. Don't want anyone faking things and thus counterfeiting it. It uses strong cryptographic principles to ensure this.

All bitcoin transactions are public and part of this public ledger.

706
So, how is it so private, then, if all bitcoin and transactions are public? Ownership. Bitcoins are owned by an "address". An address is generated by a private key. The function is one-way. It is easy to get an address from a key, but impossible to compute a private key from an address (practically impossible, age of the universe to solve, etc).

Mainting these private keys and working with them is very hard, as anyone familiar with crypto systems knows. It's very tedious and non-intuitive. Paper "wallets", which is basically a slip of paper printed out with the private key have been used, but those things are notoriusly dangerous. About 20% of bitcoin has been "lost". The ownership keys have been loss. They're there, but nobody can claim ownership.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 10, 2021 02:46 AM (Mzdiz)

707
That complexity of key management is why these exchanges are so popular. They do the work.

However, no hacker or anyone doing anything illegal would dare use these public exchanges. They would have a private "wallet". And a hardware one, which can be a thumb drive (again, you don't want paper wallets, too easy to fuck up and lose).

So any hacker worth two cents, not to mention sophisticated Putin henchmen hackers would use a public exchange. They would've directed the payment to be made to a certain address. That address would be to a private key they held privately, physically, and not on any public exchange server.

This process would take about 5 minutes.

708 I have made a few posts lately that I guess come off as bitching, or moaning about the state of the country. After this one, I am going to try to let up. I don't want to be angry all the time, that is no way to live. But It is not I who has changed, it is the country, or at least parts of it.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think US Flags have been at half staff more often then they have in 2021. I swear, every time I look, the flags are at half staff. I missed out on some former president dying, or some other extreme reason. I recall it was normally done when a former president passed, or something comparable, that involved the entire nation.

I am sure for each time, someone has a good reason. But is that the way it was meant to be? There is always a good reason, but that doesn't mean you do it. To me, there is something deflating about seeing your nation's colors at half staff all the time. It represents mourning, and trouble. If it is a regular thing, it can be a deflating thing to see.

Posted by: Quint at June 10, 2021 02:54 AM (gJfTA)

709
The FBI and other world law enforcement has gotten pretty good over the years at tracing bitcoin transactions. The ledger is public. It's a distributed network thing. To do a bitcon transaction involves communication with lots of the components of this network.

To initiate it, you've got to be connected, and some IP addresses involved will be exposed. LEOs have gotten good at zeroing in on the IP addresses initiating the transactions.

But only if they're sloopy. Any sophisticated hackers would be using the dark web to bounce it all over the place.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 10, 2021 02:55 AM (Mzdiz)

710 There is a pot office near me. They fly the US flag and the pow mia flag. Their flag has been at half staff for ten days or so. I kept wondering what the reason was and when it would end. Is it for D Day? No, that doesn't make sense. They did it long before June the 6th and still have it that way today. Around town I see some flags at half staff and others in the normal position. That alone is disconcerting.

There has to be a site that keeps records on this stuff. I would bet a lot that the first half of 2021 is setting a record for Old Glory at half staff. What I am trying to figure out is why. I have my suspicions. Sure, some politicos don't know the meaning of the gesture. And also some like the idea of America in constant mourning.

Finally, obfuscation of transactions. Physical currency analogy. Say the kidnap ransom has been paid to a bagman. Now, since bitcoin transactions are all public in this massive ledger, it's like all the currency in the bag has know serial numbers. Marked bills.

Say the cops are following the bag man. The bagman goes into a big money exchange. He pulls out all the bills and starts making thousands of exchanges. He changes the $100 bills into $20s, then changes those into smaller, even into coins, nickels and quarters. He then consolidates those back.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 10, 2021 03:04 AM (Mzdiz)

713 post office, not pot office.

Posted by: Quint at June 10, 2021 03:04 AM (gJfTA)

714
After all that obfuscation, the single bagman has converted his original cash into several bags of cash, all of different bills than the original. Those multiple bag men now exit the money exchange.

You can do that with bitcoin and crypto in general, and it's all automated and fast.

Any real sophisticated hackers would've immediately done that with their ransom. Obfuscated the hell of it and put the final loot into mulitiple physical hardware wallets. And those devices would not be in the United State, but in some remote part of Russia.

725 every time it is warranted, I support it of course. But if it is done every fourth day, and no one knows as to why, it makes the gesture lose relevance imo. Did we lower the flag after every set back in WW2? I don't think it was meant to be done every time something unfortunate happens and every anniversary of every unfortunate event. I just find something odd about it. For sure it is being done more often than ever for some reason.
