We know what kind of surgery he is probably going to recommend - one of her classmates had the same surgery last year with excellent results. Unfortunately, Rebecca has "aged out" of the pediatric population, so we couldn't use the doctor that did her surgery. Hip dysplasia is not uncommon in the Down syndrome population, and Rebecca has been in pain for over a year at this point. She NEVER complains about pain, so we know that she must really be hurting if she is talking about it. Recovery is going to be interesting.... Posted by: Martini Farmer at June 05, 2021 09:42 PM (3H9h1) ----------- The problems were all connected. They needed the MCAS (a first for the 737) because the plane was aerodynamically unstable. It was aerodynamically unstable because the engine diameter was huge. The engines were so large that the had to be pushed forward on the wing, which caused the instability. The computer was supposed to mitigate the instability. The original JT9 engines that the 737 was designed around had a diameter of about 50". The MAX engine had a 108" diameter. That's why Boeing should have designed a new airframe instead of Mickey Mousing their current design with a poorly-engineered computer band-aid. Last night I made a comment about music in the last 21 years has been all the same, and completely boring. Evidence is how Sirius XM has only 2 channels that play music published since 2000.
I was reminded today of the Danny Boyle movie, Yesterday. Ed Sheeran (as himself) is a major part of the movie. I wonder if he realized the irony in the movie plot that while he was the hottest pop star in the world, he was completely dwarfed by an average club singer playing Beetles songs. Because that is pretty much where music is today, Ed Sheeran is the best you can get for the last 21 years and is totally inferior to music genres that spanned 5 to 8 years from 30, 40, and 50 years ago. If one looks back at some of the old, defunct stock certificates that were printed in the late 1800's and early 1900's you'll see some serious craftsmanship. Little known issue for Disney is that prior to Covid, the biggest drain on their revenue was the Shanghai park.
They put 100% of the investment into the development for a 49% take on the revenue. They were already cutting back in every department company wide to cover their losses. I dumped my Disney stock when I learned, settled for a nice profit on it, and never looked back. Add in Covid where all 6 parks, plus a profitable cruiseline business gets shut down (while they still have to pay for 2 new ships being build). Then they operate only 1 park at less than half capacity for a year. They are in a very bad position. Arguing with KK about woke movie crap is not a distraction they can afford. 22 They weren't brown MMs, were they? Posted by: Van Halen at June 05, 2021 08:59 PM (uuj1Y) The "no brown MandM's" clause in the Van Halen contracts with concert promoters were true. I thought for ever that it was just another David Lee Roth "eff you" move. Wrong. I read about a year ago that their concert promoters would routinely ignore many different requirements spelled out. Logistics, hotel rooms, etc. Their manager got the idea to put in the "no brown MandM's" clause, with a massive penalty if not followed, so the promoters would actually read and execute on the contract correctly. The problems ceased for the most part after that. And it wasn't a huge amount, only one big bag of MandM's was required. Something a junior assistant would take 5 minutes to finish. The more you know. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at June 05, 2021 11:37 PM (sy5kK) 513

It's kind of sobering to think that sci-fi used to be avant garde. Whether it was Gene Roddenberry's JFK hagiographies or Stanley Kubrick's wild ride through time, space, and the human subconscious, the genre was generally seen as a serious if slightly fringe venue for contemplating real-world issues with some degree of intellectual rigor.

Horus Heresy isn't bad, honestly. That franchise has a reputation for being a mile wide and an inch deep but the Horus books are making a serious attempt to flesh it out in a reasonable way. The Ciaphas Cain (sp?) books have a good reputation too, though I personally haven't read any of them. They're about an Imperial Guard commissar that The Powers That Be are propping up as a glorious hero, but the man himself has some insecurities and just wants a quiet career.
I might queue them up at some point. Not a fan of my new commute and need more than a couple of CDs for the daily drive. Posted by: CppThis at June 06, 2021 12:07 AM (8h1h1) 581

"Newsom may actually provoke violent response"
Nah, conservatives just want to be left alone, to focus on career and family. Violence would risk all of that. I think they're game is now to keep a low profile in hopes their fellow conservatives will be eaten first. The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Jan 6th was the Red Line, and it passed. I was in DC at the march (but not in the buildings) trying to post at Insty, and even they threw cold water on live reports to keep the mark cooled. Nah, Hoyt christened me as a "Paid Turkish Provocateur Troll" based on a Twitter account that's not mine (never been on Twitter) and tried to ban me and failed. Correia joined in with a cowardly shadowban.
Apparently I spent 20 years here and at Insty establishing a deep cover only to be activated now to provoke conservatives into some gotcha quote for MNSBC (or the FBI, that part is confusing) to use to shut conservative sites down. SMH the paranoia has gotten ridiculous. I sent her of ID, my email, my background, including my creation of Fen's Law, etc. to prove who I really was, but I'm not important enough to be treated fairly by her. So I'm owning the nom de plume for the lolz. You gotta have a sense of humor about these things, or you go insane. And I'm pretty sure I'm already there, so... But she saved me a ton of money that I would have spent on her and Correia's books LOL. I'm sure they're good writers, but now it's like when you can't enjoy Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk because without remembering that he called a Deplorable Nazi. I was thinking today. The Epic Rap Battle video of Tolkien vs George RR Martin had me thinking:
-Tolkien was a veteran of WWI, the Somme specifically. He lost most of his friends in the war. -Pirate Martin 'missed' Vietnam. -their fiction worldviews could not be more different. One would think that Tolkien's would be the darker, more nihilist (at least that is what modern culture would have us believe) instead, it merely reinforced his faith and through his writing, he seems to have hope. Martin, it seems from my read, is nothing but a twisted and empty piece of shit. Strange. Adversity seems to breed stronger and better men. Whoda thunk? Posted by: goozer at June 06, 2021 12:59 AM (ra9Xu) Goozer the Goozarian? This is an interesting idea though. To play Devil's advocate, it DID add an element of tragedy to the story and elevated the whole series, to my mind. The rest of the crap added on over time (ewoks, the prequels) cannot dispel that it set up a lot of things that were thought provoking. I try to explain Unicum as-do you know Jagermeister? Yes? Jagermeister is for girls Posted by: Miklos and his Lowland Yucatecan Magyar-Maya Lawyer(s) at June 06, 2021 01:17 AM (QzkSJ) 671
Miklos. My house is a fully paid off mortgage, with title secured by the Nation's largest Title Insurance company.
Ft. Knox doesn't have paper security as strong as this. Bonus? If I were to sell, the "title search" would take about five minutes, flat. Original owner, since construction, no lien, no mortgage, no "balance". Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 06, 2021 01:17 AM (QzJWU) 672
Antipathy towards Jager is definitely a positive. However, it does not make it good.

No, not Gozer--my nick is based on the pronunciation of the first half of my last name.
As to the twist, think back to the scene in the first movie where Obi-Wan is relating the story of Luke's father to him and giving him his lightsaber. "I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did. It's your father's lightsaber." Now think about the reveal in ESB. "From a certain point of view" my behind. Posted by: goozer at June 06, 2021 01:19 AM (ra9Xu) 675
Prior to Empire Strikes Back the 3 main characters were less-serious, and had less rapport and chemistry. Darth Vader had less clout. Empire was not as enjoyable as the others, but it built the characters, and that is everything.

Posted by: goozer at June 06, 2021 01:19 AM (ra9Xu) By the same token, I am pretty sure that the twist was not thought of in Star Wars, but something always struck me on subsequent viewings of Star Wars. It comes from Guiness' performance there. When Luke asks about his father, Obi-Wan looks... uncomfortable, almost guilty. It may just be me, but it jives with what he is saying is not the whole truth. Posted by: Aetius451AD at June 06, 2021 01:22 AM (PNtP0) 681

I had gone down the Peter Cushing - Vincent Price - Christopher Lee rabbit hole on amazon prime.
It occurred to me that Cushing was better as a righteous hero than a villain, even though it was beneath the surface and he was a damn good villain. Not a villain first, and this is why there were versions of Tarkin in the new movies that didn't hit the mark so much. I said I might sculpt a 12" figure of Cushing Van Helsing, but my desk hasn't arrived yet. It was supposed to come today. Blender might be more detailed. I was handy at Z Brush years ago. "I've been away for a few weeks, what have I missed?"
Looks as if Instapundit is now shadowbanning readers critical of the Daily Treacheround. While simultaneously complaining about censorship from the NYTs, Facebook and Twitter. I'm still testing it. I'm beginning to wonder if Libertarians and Conservatives are no different than the Marxist Left. "You're just like me, only smaller" - the Hound, GoT They claim to have "principles" that keep them from fighting dirty, but they sure are flexible when it REALLY serves their interests. What a benchmark. The Godfather sells out. If I was smarter, I would just abandon the Right and use that time and energy on a new hobby, like bird watching. Because it's beginning to feel like the whole thing is a grift. Are there any other places that are True? Posted by: Hoyt's Paid Turkish Provocateur at June 06, 2021 02:32 AM (83lwH) 706
I don't know maybe I'm just wired wrong. I admit my wife hasn't been able to completely deprogram me from being an infantry Marine.
It's just that I try to handle these things like people say: don't resort to violence, deal with it in a civil and respectful manner. But when I try adhering to that principle, they instead play this censorship game. Posted by: Hoyt's Paid Turkish Provacteur at June 06, 2021 02:45 AM (83lwH) 707
