The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“This is an unfortunate reminder that we need to stay vigilant and ‘bear aware’ at all times,” Kyle Bond, CPW district wildlife manager

*

Quote II

“So far, the results of the treatment with the drug MesenCure are extremely impressive and an improvement over the results of other treatments,” Dr. Shadi Hamoud

Those pesky Joos.

Quote III

“The price of having a tournament is I have to deny equal opportunity to hundreds of thousands of young girl and women athletes throughout Florida — I am much more willing to stand with the girls and to hell with these events" Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL)

If he runs for POTUS in 2024 he has my support.

What the Republican Party needs are more Rand Pauls and fewer Mitt Romneys (Spits)

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., shared two words in response to news of unearthed emails from Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Thousands of emails obtained by Buzzfeed News and hundreds more reviewed by The Washington Post through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests show Fauci's responses to both critiques and high praise as he worked to communicate the dangers of COVID-19 to the U.S. as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"Told you," Paul wrote in a Tuesday tweet with the hashtag #firefauci.

Near by my home, the wonderfully smart and worldly DOT is installing a roundabout where there the interchange has on and off ramps. Contrary to John Stossel's opinion, roundabouts may be better at times, but not always.

There's a solution: traffic circles, or roundabouts.

Traffic circles terrified me when I first confronted them in Europe. A movie, National Lampoon?s European Vacation, captured my experience when it portrayed Chevy Chase driving in London, unable to exit a rotary all day.

Besides being hard to navigate, I also assumed roundabouts cause problems, but a Freakanomics podcast woke me to their advantages. Roundabouts are a reason Britain?s rate of traffic deaths is less than half the U.S.'s.

We've converted almost all of our traffic lights to roundabouts because we save lives,? says the mayor of Carmel, Indiana, Jim Brainard. His little town now has 133 roundabouts.

Carmel is a suburban city in Indiana immediately north of Indianapolis. With a population of 101,068, the city spans 47 square miles across Clay Township in Hamilton County, Indiana, and is bordered by ... Wikipedia

133 roundabouts. Good grief.

When one says "No". "No" is the answer.

Police in Spain have arrested a bar worker for allegedly slicing off her boss's manhood with a knife while she claimed he was attempting to rape her.

The woman told officers she was trying to resist a sex attack at a bar in Sant Andreu de la Barca, near Barcelona, at around midnight on Tuesday.

The unnamed woman contacted police to admit to her assault and the slice victim was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation so medics could attempt to reattach his penis.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the operation had been a success.

Oops! Paratroopers raid Bulgarian olive oil factory by mistake

Soldiers with the 173rd Airborne Brigade mistakenly seized and secured a working olive oil factory in Bulgaria as part of a large-scale NATO exercise aimed at deterring Russian military aggression in eastern Europe.

“On May 11, soldiers entered and cleared a building next to the airfield that they believed was part of the training area, but that was occupied by Bulgarian civilians operating a private business,” according to a U.S. Army Europe and Africa statement released today. “No weapons were fired at any time during this interaction.”

Officials said that during the exercise, soldiers simulated entering and clearing multiple bunkers and structures across the decommissioned Cheshnegirovo airfield in Bulgaria

Moooo-over Genius Award Winner.

The Barron County, Wisconsin, sheriff's office and police department had assistance from an unexpected group early Tuesday during a chase.

According to a post from the sheriff's office, deputies were assisting police during a 13-mile pursuit between Barron and Cumberland.

The chase ended on a farm when the suspect vehicle was blocked by a group of cattle.

"We would be remiss if we didn't thank the Barron County Bovine Unit for jumping into the fray when the vehicle came into their patrol area," the post stated.

Most Feel Good Stories here on The ONT are pretty straight forward. This one is weird. But still, Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Ten years after their first date, Debby Neal-Strickland put on a cream-colored lace gown and married her longtime sweetheart at their Florida church. Two days later, she put on a hospital gown and donated a kidney to Mylaen Merthe — her new husband’s ex-wife.

An unusual story? Yes. But the tale of Jim Merthe and his two wives is a testament to how love and compassion can triumph over division.

Mylaen, 59, had long struggled with kidney disease. By last year, she was ghostly pale with dark circles under her eyes, dragging herself through the workday with no energy. By the time she was admitted to the hospital in November, her kidneys were only functioning at 8%.

Her brother offered to donate a kidney, but wasn’t a match so Debby volunteered.

Jim and Mylaen have been divorced nearly two decades, but they got along well as they raised their two children, and as Jim fell in love with 56-year-old Debby. The women were friendly at family gatherings, though not especially close.

96 I maintain that it's better for everyone if DeSantis stays in Florida, because an awesome governor who's willing to go to the mattresses is both great for his constituents and a powerful rallying symbol that others can do the same. One of the perennial failings of conservative types is that they tend to focus on who's in the White House to the exclusion of everything else...and then they wonder why they get situations like Trump where the top guy has some good ideas but lacks the political capital to make them stick.

129 Well-designed roundabouts definitely improve the flow of traffic. They out one in at the intersection of Superstition Boulevard and AZ Hwy. 88 in Apache Junction. The two roads meet at a 45 degree angle, and 88 is a 50 mph road. Trying to cross it on Superstition was always a PITA, and it is damned hard to shoulder-check for traffic approaching on your rear quarter. Now that the circle is in, 9 times out of 10, I can just sail right through the intersection, slowing to about 35 mph. Once in a while, I may have to yield to traffic on 88, but at least I can now see it.

Now, two roundabouts in quick succession? Bad planning.

152 I don't mind traffic circles. Where I generally find them they're not heavily trafficked and I just zip through not even slowing down. They would have put a traffic light instead which would slow me. I've gotten to them at the same time as someone else and we both go right through and its perfect. But it takes just one dummy coming to a stop somewhere to make it all breakdown.

Something they're doing a lot in my neighborhood are speedhumps which sounds like an olympic sport but is just a bigger more annoying version of a speedbump. They do this because people just have to drive 50mph through a residential area. So they do these big plastic/rubber ramps in the road. Some streets have tiny liliputian roundabouts, 5ft diameter in the middle of the road to make you slow too.

200 In many localities they've intentionally made traffic on the main routes terrible in an attempt to force people onto public transit.
Unfortunately for the traffic planners cheap and common GPS partially caused this to fail...but now it leads to MUCH more traffic on side roads.

So, because the first intentional problem caused a secondary problem they didn't expect we now need a new solution which causes MORE problems.

Oh and when I'm stuck in traffic in some wealthy blue enclave I love to glare at the wine moms annoyed at all the traffic.

No. It. Does. Not. "forbid both office holders from being from the same state"

XII: The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves

If both Trump and DeSantis are running for Pres/VP and both are still residing in Florida, then the Florida electors would have to vote for someone other than DeSantis as VP. While this would be a major penalty for being residents of Florida, if both were residents of North Dakota, the penalty would be three electoral votes.

Because the penalty here would be large, it makes it unlikely that Trump/DeSantis would be the ticket, but it is not "forbidden".

The problem isn't that people are gay. Who cares? It's having them constantly portrayed as victims, no matter how well their lives are going. And having the issues shoved at you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the media. The gay people I know are financially and professionally successful, and are not having hate crimes committed against them. I don't care if someone's gay. I just want the media, including the entertainment industry to shut the f**k up.

I'd like to know who was/is Fauci's superior. Does he have one? Short of the President? If no, this is a huge problem. Fauci played the media like a violin. He and the media made him the equivalent of the top star on a pro football or basketball team. The pecking order is superstar player, owner, coach or general manager as three or four, depending on the owner.

If no one is effectively Fauci's superior, one he must take and follow orders from, while he rules all US Gov infectious disease personnel and programs with an iron fist, we (The People) are going to suffer from any misjudgments or CYA moves he makes.

Local example of how it's going to hell.
We decided we wanted some KFC tonight, so we drive to town. Pull in the drive-thru and am told "We're outta chicken." Kentucky Fried Chicken is out of chicken.

Chic-Fil-A was close to it, but they were swamped. End up going to our favorite Burger King. They were out of chicken nuggets. Out of onion rings, too. 321 I am tired today. Who knew that being retired was worse than working for a living?

I had dragged out an old Nissan King Cab 4X4 chassis that sat in an out of the way corner with stuff piled on it. Much of the stuff got cut up and flattened to become a load of scrap metal for the scrap dealer. I had planned to strip the Nissan chassis, and weld legs on it to make a rack for storing pieces of steel. I have built several such in the past few years. And they are all full. Shit multiplies, it does.

So, I cut the fuel tank out of the frame. Uh-oh! Frame is rusted out, big-time, behind the fuel tank. No way it would support a load of steel. So I cut in in half, and loaded it on the pickup, along with the stuff that was on it. Then I busted the 4 tires off the rims, and put the rusty rims in the scrap load, too. Then I mounted 4 tires onto Studebaker rims, because I will soon have to go fetch a car that lacks wheels, and I will need "rollers" to winch it on the trailer.

383 >> One of those Fauci emails has Adam Gaertner, in March of 2020, explaining in very specific detail, how the virus "was created".

I saw that earlier today, and was going to post something about. Gaerner is on the forefront of the push-back against the active suppression of effective treatments for Covid disease. Read his stuff.

He sent Fauci this "recipe" for making SARS-CoV-2 starting out with HIV virions. I have no idea if that is remotely credible. Be nice if those who do would look at it and say if it's crap or not.

My own conclusion is the spike protein is the highly engineered bioweapon thing, a component theoreof, something to be highly effective at getting viruses to infect human cells (of the targeted kind).

They were grafting this on to various bat viruses they were playing with to see how well it worked. In creating that spike protein, it's possible they used components from the HIV virus.

I've lost count of the number of friends and acquaintances who've been through it, every one of them in the 58- 60 age range. My sister and sister-in-law both were laid off from the same corporation on the same day last year! It takes time to get past the shock and distress, but it will get better.

Yeah I just don't know because I never had a need to use it. I think I only have gone in that liquor store one time ever. Hell my hometown doesn't have a liquor store. It has the grocery store, and the liquor isn't even in a walled off section or anything. Its just out there in the open and you check out with all your other groceries. And its the full strength, none of this 40 proof diluted stuff.

Gay and tranny are different, IMO. Gay is a preference. There's no disputing preferences (you can believe the preference is wrong, but you can't dispute that it exists). Tranny is a mental illness where you believe you are a sex other than the one that you are. It is closer to the way that some people believe they are Napoleon or Jesus Christ than it is to any kind of sexual preference.

Ammo. They had 9, 40, 22LR, 7.62X25, maybe a few others, didn't do a careful check. 9mm was $33/box. It's down to about $17-20/box online (before shipping).

So looks like we're at about Step 1.5 of Panic Recovery, WRT ammo. There is stock again, at 2-3 times "normal" price. Step 2 will be a lot more stock, variety, followed kind of quickly and intermingled with Step 3, plenty of stock, close-to-normal prices.

And in the fallout she discovered from the ex's dad (who she talks with and who thinks his son is an idiot) that ex was married 4 times before and somehow that never came up before.

Tork was a Greenwich hopeful. Dolenz had recorded at least 1 record release (maybe just a single?)with his own band. Want to lose a little sparkle for Monty Python? Look at some of the other British comedies that predate and run at the same time as them and discover that that style of comedy was, well maybe not exactly in vogue but certainly not unique, we just didn't get those programs in the States. They are still brilliant, but yeah.

And the Monkees was completely a corporate product that was aiming to seem counter culture, but in a safe for the masses way (and also why 3 of the 4 stars got tired of the show even though it was a ticket to stardom as it clashed with their senses). Also not a unique strategy as far as TV/whoreywood goes, that they lasted so long in reruns and as an actual touring band is a tribute that there is something special there in the combination. See also: all the Hanna Barbara cartoons that are a variation of the same formula, but only a few like Scooby doo actual are remembered today.

517 The fact that it was known this was a weaponzied virus explains why Trump went along with a lot of what he did. Aside from the political motives - he was trapped in an election year - there was always little doubt in my mind he "knew" this wasn't just another virus. I mean shit, most of us did, but he *knew*.

When you are dealing with a known unknown like that, the smart method is to try mitigation and fuck to the economic consequences. Because what *if* the long term stuff baked into the virus will itself be crippling? What if the less deadly virus is just Part 1?

The problem is most of the mitigation measures were cooked up by the same people who invented the virus. This is now WWIII but the players are not China vs the world. Not by a longshot.

That is, you play enough of someone's forward speech backwards, and you get suspiciously intelligible words related to what they are saying forwards. Often it seems thoughts they are trying to hide.

Many would argue this is simply an auditory form of pareidolia, but being a language dude, I tested and have heard this effect for myself. It's almost creepy, and it's also almost completely inexplicable given what we currently understand about the mind and language. But it exists.

What's weird about these short words and phrases is that while many instances are akin to listening to "ghost hunter" recordings, and debatable at best, some of them absolutely "jump out" of the backwards speech as if they were purposely inserted.

There's always going to be things to discover that at the time make zero sense. This is one of them.

That came out, and one of Fauci's white whales is HIV, and the CCP has a huge issue with dealing with HIV. I have suspected that what they were doing was trying to develop a version of HIV that they could use to try therapies on in the lab, by taking out specific sections to work with.

The problem with HIV is that it mutates a lot, and even a weakened virus becomes fully modified and infectious which is why there still is no vaccine for it

Posted by: rhomboid at June 03, 2021 12:56 AM (OTzUX)

564 While "let's see what happens!" is indeed part of scientific history and especially scientific-military development, the Castle Bravo miscalculation was based on a very specific misunderstanding of the reaction of lithium-7 to the kinds of energy it would be subjected to when the device exploded, and how it would react. Instead of decaying slowly and thus being irrelevant, it instantly produced more high energy neutrons and thus greatly increased the yield from the fissionable uranium that was part of the device.

Posted by: rhomboid at June 03, 2021 12:59 AM (OTzUX)

565 Though how greater fission efficiency could produce a 250-300% increase in total yield in a fusion device puzzles me, on the face of it.

There was a greater *fusion* cross section of lithium7 that they missed.

Posted by: Chuck C at June 03, 2021 01:11 AM (awtm/)

567 http://nuclearweaponarchive.org/ Usa/Tests/Castle.html

The reason for the unexpectedly high yield was due to the "tritium bonus" provided by the lithium-7 isotope which made up most of the lithium. This isotope was expected to be essentially inert, but in fact it had a substantial reaction cross section with the high energy neutrons produced by tritium-deuterium fusion. When one of these high energy neutrons collided with a lithium-7 atom, it could fragment it into a tritium and a helium atom. Tritium was the most valuable fusion fuel, being both highly reactive and causing extremely energetic fusion, so this extra source of tritium greatly increased the weapon yield

572
Reading up on this. The final fission stage of the U-239 tamper contributes to over 50% of the total yield of your typical thermonuclear device. It can be has high 75% or so.

The Li-7 did both. They had incorrectly assumed it would just absorb a neutron an "sit there" over a much longer time scale than the fusion reaction before decaying.

However it didn't, when hit with a neutron with enough energy. It decayed instantly and produced more tritium and more neutrons than expected. And those extra fast neutrons increased the final fission of the U-238 tamper.
