A while back a commenter led me to Mark Schweizer's St. Germaine mysteries. I decided, what the heck, I'll buy all 15. (I had a question and the publisher's office was delighted to hear about the AOS Book thread.) I've been saving them for a long holiday/vacation - this week! Now I'm diving into the first one, The Alto Wore Tweed. I know from other commenters here I will enjoy these.

On the literary front I am currently reading "The Real German War Plan" by Terence Zuber.
Zuber dives into the available archival data to argue that Schlieffen's "Perfect Plan" not only never existed but that Von Moltke the younger's eventual plan was not even related to it.
Something I did not know was no Schlieffen war game ran to even 50 days let alone 90. Also the hypothesis behind the 1905 plan was a single front French war whereas conventional wisdom largely generated initially to sell German "war guilt" was largely fabricated independent of any investigation. The book is not particularly well crafted, but it was well thought out.

Choose entertainment over intellectual stimulation last week. Read Schlichter's 5th book Crisis. Enjoyed it enough that I started the series over. Started book 3, Wildfire, last night. Going to head across the road to the timber company property this afternoon and have a little range time in the 100 yard to 300 yard range. Wondering if there is a correlation between what I've read and my current attitude?

And 400 pages into William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, finishing the despicable giveaway by the allies of Czechoslovakia

I do not use one, but rely on memory to keep track of them, but I only have around two hundred books, tops. Those of greatest interest (and mostly read) are shelved.

To whichever Moron recommended News of the World by Paulette Jiles, thank you. Can't recall a book in recent memory I enjoyed as much as this one. I checked out her other books by reviews on Amazon. This appears to be her best work so far. Anyone read any of her other books? I don't always trust the Amazon reviews.

Went to Avenu Victor Hugo Books in Lee NH yesterday. Got a book on DaVinci's inventions (translated from the French), one called Why the Holocaust? and Rebecca West's 1900. That last is the one I am going to be reading today, since it is cold and dreary outside and I need to rest my queasy self.

which seems kinda bogus... so I'm wondering if it's just kicking out low-traffic associiates or maybe a conservative purge
or both
anyway, I take it as a good thing - God telling me to quit supporting the Bezos demon and find another way to engage readers with conservative books

I read that, sven. I've never heard Horan speak, but IMO he makes a very convincing case for there being no "Zodiac" and that Robert Graysmith is a lifelong, unrepentant liar who railroaded the police into thinking Arthur Leigh Allen was the killer. I'll be interested in your opinion.

Anyone read The Mystery of the Aleph: Mathematics, the Kabbalah, and the Search for Infinity by Amir D. Aczel? I picked if up on a whim because I like books about math concepts although Gödel, Escher, Bach mostly irritated me with the way it was narrated particularly dwelling at excessive length on Zeno's paradoxes which are demonstrably not true. This is narrated much more straightforwardly plus I recently completed a Hilldsale course on Euclid and mathematics so hopefully this will be more fulfilling.

Kinda sorta O/T - I'm doing research into producing audio books here at stately Casa Backwardio. Amazon has an entire division that does nothing but manage the people who do that. Lots of good advice from long-time pros who've been doing that for years. I'll start with technical books since that's the area I'm most familiar with. Have everything I need here: mic, recording software and what will become the isolation booth (the closet, DON'T GO THERE!).

Any plan that depended on advancing in a wheeling maneuver was going to put great strain on troops and supply for those on the outer end of the wheel. It brings to mind the scene in Slap Shot where the Charlestown Chiefs watch an ice show and are greatly amused by the efforts of a young lady at one end of the wheel trying to get back into the end position as the wheel turned.

My reading this past week has been a bit sporadic. Still grinding my way through _The Magic Mountain_ by Thomas Mann. It's a slog, no question. It is a "novel of ideas" which apparently means it's a book about people talking about stuff. Kind of like some of Heinlein's most self-indulgent novels. In obeisance to the Sunk Cost Fallacy I'm going to finish this sonofabitch, but then it's going into the discard box.
For lighter fare I've been looking at the Collected Letters of EB White, which also sort of functions as a biography of him.
E.B. White seems like a fairly nice guy, a bit shy. A classic New Deal liberal unaware of the bubble he lived in. Kind of a hypochondriac, continually bitching about his health when he wasn't camping, sailing, doing manual farm work, and traveling. (He lived to be 85.) Loved animals the way people who actually live in the country do, so points to him there. Good writer who cared about standards. His childrens' books are his best work because he wasn't straining to be clever (as he was in the New Yorker) or profound (as he was in Harpers).

I recommend Douglas Tallamy's Bringing Nature Home for any other gardeners out there. Not only did the book provide a theory of terraforming for my own personal (albeit imaginary) alien invasion plans, he made me rethink my gardening philosophy. Tallamy is a professor of entomology and makes the point that 90 percent of insects are specialists, thus agreeing with Robert Heinlein, which makes him immediately credible. Ninety percent of insects, including caterpillars and butterflies, eat only one plant, what they evolved with. With all the alien plants we put in our gardens, not to mention what gets bequeathed to us by bird poop, we deprive insects of food. This in turn deprives birds of the insects they eat, squirrels of nuts, breaking all sorts of links int he food chain.
What I like is how the second half of the book talks about what individual homeowners can do to help restore things simply by planting natives. I've already put in three oak seedlings a friend gave me, but I'm going to do more in the fall after Brood X retires from the scene.

I read A Writer's Life, a biography of Janice Holt Giles. She's primarily known for her historical fiction about Kentucky. And also did some non-fiction about her husband's WWII experiences and their life together in Appalachia. She's been one of my favorite authors for a long time. Her book on the Shakers, The Believers, is a good way to understand how that religion came into being and what their daily lives were like.
She said an interesting thing about Willa Cather, in an interview. She said that Cather would have been a stronger writer if she'd been married. Said the interactions with men and women didn't ring true because she'd never really experienced it herself. Anyway, good biography.

I've been wending my way through C.J. Box's Joe Pickett mysteries, which are uniformly excellent. "Cold Wind" (2011) pulls no punches in slamming an administration that funnels billions to alternative energy (in this case, wind farms) that cost more than they produce and are built mainly to suck up subsidies and provide tax credits. And the land on which they sit is filled with oil and minerals that can't be tapped.

I've started rereading "Facial Justice" by L P Hartley, a dystopian novel considered one of the 99 Greatest Novels of the 20th Century by Anthony Burgess.
Its premise is a low key, English gentlemanly sort of oppression where people must wear masks(!), so that everyone isequally beautiful the same and there are no hurt feelings. It is grey land where there are no highs nor lows.
If that sounds like today's America, welp, here's another novel which should be considered a warning and not a blueprint.

Still reading LT CDR Hohmeier's "Irresistible Revolution: Marxism's Goal of Conquest and the Unmaking of the American Military". It's a pithy introduction to the fundamentals of the American Experiment, and I hope it becomes part of the underground curriculum for junior enlisted (or heck, anybody). Swearing to uphold and defend the Constitution isn't about fealty to a piece of parchment, but recognizing it is protecting the natural rights of the citizenry (which are God-given, not government-granted).

Do you recall the dozens upon dozens of nuclear war gaming scenarios in the 1983 movie WarGames? Their names and origin points became increasingly bizarre the further into the stack Joshua / W.O.P.R. proceeded and there were a metric shit-ton of them.

I finally got a copy of Sanderson's The Way of Kings. I was 56th on the wait list for the book so it took a while. They sent me a paperback trade edition. The book is a daunting 1000 pages long. This may take awhile.

I saw the trailer for M. Night Shamwow's new movie, "Old", and got curious, so I got the graphic novel comic book it is based upon.
"Sandcastle"
The gimmick here is that a family and others are trapped on a beach where they are growing old very fast and most will be dead by the next morning unless a solution or escape is found.
The duo who made it are European, so-o-o-o-o you can guess the sort of non-ending which this is headed for.
Another problem is that a large part of it is taken up with Racist White Priovilege Euro-style ie. read Frenchies and Algerians for White and Blacks).
And mostly all they can think of is that everyone wants to have sex with everyone else as they grow older (as in 3 year old to adult.
MNS has his work cut out for him ignoring the crap and sticking with the interesting parts.

I miss the cheesy color glass window panes randomly placed in the windowwall of our elementary school library, constructed in the late 50s. The building is still there and owned by the regional school district, but that windowwall is long gone now.

I read the first Raylan Givens book by Elmore Leonard "Pronto" this week. Its not really his book, its about a bookie named Harry who runs from the mob and the feds to Italy and Raylan is a sort of side character, but is important.
This Raylan is a bit different from the one in Justified; he's in his 40s, has two kids, and speaks with a country accent. Otherwise he's basically the same guy and its fun to read about him.
But the book is called Pronto, and its anything but. Its meandering and takes a long time to get a small amount done, and even the dialog doesn't have much sparkle. Plus the Harry character is really unlikable and uninteresting. Not Leonard's finest work even if there is enough there to make it interesting.
I've started the next Raylan book "Ride the Rap" but it looks to be mostly about Harry again :/

I listened to the Foote audio books when I was doing the hour and a half commute to work. I'd like to actually read them, as I don't learn as well from audio. I have the Rockefeller book, i found the early part interesting. But like the Grant book, it got misplaced. I'll tackle them again, when I have more time to read.

One of the things I find intriguing about Rockefeller is his combination of ruthless capitalist and pious Baptist who gave a lot of money to charity.

Oh, so what you are saying is that a vast majority of voters did not commit fraud. And there weren't 12,000 fraudulent votes in that town, so it would not change the outcome anyway. Further, one one of the extra ballots was a Trump vote, so "both sides".

This week I read Chasing Freedom by Marina Fontaine. This is a dystopian novel set in the US in the near future, like 2040. The US government has stripped away most of Americans' freedoms and relocated everyone into the cities. A small group of young people starts a rebellion that grows over the next decade or so. It's a tightly written story that follows several main characters. Fontaine's setting is, unlike most dystopian novels, not only plausible but likely.

I know its very hard to come up with great, interesting book covers but the "a couple of attractive people" or "one really pretty girl" in front of a vague background is my least favorite. Not only are the people usually not really like the characters in the book, but it doesn't tell me anything about the story.
I mean, its better than the abstract shapes covers in the 60s and 70s but only marginally.

130 I finally got a copy of Sanderson's The Way of Kings. I was 56th on the wait list for the book so it took a while. They sent me a paperback trade edition. The book is a daunting 1000 pages long. This may take awhile.

Finished P.G. Wodehouse's "Cocktail Time" on audiobook. This stars Uncle Fred, whom I like a shade better than Wooster and Jeeves.
A Wodehouse novel is like a strangely arranged conveyer belt; it twists this way and that but delivers you to where you wanted to go, and afterward you realize that you thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

About Elmore Leonard...I think I read his stuff before he started writing Raylan books. I did not recognize the titles mentioned so went and looked it up. I think I read the Carlos books that the Raylan character was based on.

This will be easier soon! Dynamite comics is releasing a reboot of the comic series this summer.
They have had some okay stuff, but I was really disappointed in their golden age reboots, because they went super gritty and iron age, kind of spoiling the characters in my opinion

At the cigar shop yesterday, we were talking about the sudden Kung Flu revelations and Fauci being set up as a fall guy. I predicted that within two years one or several high-ranking Dems will come out and openly admit they stole the election from Trump. A couple of the guys said that would be the final straw to break the camel's back, but I said no. I also predicted that nobody - from the gutless GOP to the mythical "70 million piised off Trump voters" - will do anything more than mutter and shrug their shoulders.

It may have been my dissatisfaction with the reader, but I grew more and more interested in having Sam Spade simply pop a few slugs into Brigid O'Shaughnessy and then drop her corpse onto the rocks near the Presidio.
The funny thing is, I have "watched" the film several times and, because I was doung something else, heard only its dialogue and enjoyed that immensely. No such luck with the audiobook and the actual source story, however.

Reading '1776' by David McCullough and currently at the Christmas raid on Trenton, their first hail-mary successful attack on the Brits. Amazing what those guys went through. We'll not see their like again soon. Except...
What struck me was the similarity to the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in the beginning of WW2. Before each of them, the US was very close to being beaten. Each of those raids was audacious, against all odds, and a well-needed morale boost that helped turn the tides in each of the wars.

I have had Dominion by Tom Holland checked out of the library for several weeks, but cannot get interested. I'll have to return it and get it again later when I'm in a better mood for thoughtful reading.
So, instead, I've been reading the first Nero Wolfe novel, Fer-De-Lance.
And I listened to the latest Longmire, Next to Last Stand. I get the feeling Craig Johnson is about to wrap this series up. Which is fine, but I hope he keeps writing, because I really enjoy his books.

To whichever Moron recommended News of the World by Paulette Jiles, thank you. Can't recall a book in recent memory I enjoyed as much as this one. I checked out her other books by reviews on Amazon. It follows one of the most interesting female characters, Adair Colley, from small Ozark Farm, to prison in St. Louis, and back. It relies on "Inside War" about the insane Civil War (1) inside of Missouri. Also, there are some fascinating comments from the author, about character development. She started and stopped writing this book several times. She said her initial heroine bored her; so she moved her into a side part and created Adair. Highly recommend this to your daughters and female friends.

First Heinlein I ever read was THE PUPPET MASTERS. I was 13 years old and ran across it in a pharmacy paperback rack.
A Signet reprint in 1963, a nice new copy that I read into the ground and later replaced. I read almost nothing but sf for pleasure for a decade after that (which probably made it harder for me to read the classroom stuff -- I wanted stuff that grabbed me by the throat on the first page). And that 2 paragraph narrative hook that begins THE PUPPET MASTERS is still one of the best I've ever seen anywhere ever.

I tried getting into godel beck escher, on captains recommendation, based on in search of klingsor, that must be where they based the pain box in dune on, the reich political officer for scientific matters was conrad stark, who was a decent particle physicists, I wouldn't have known if not for klingsor, there is surprisingly little references I think I saw one in le carre's brothers tome, knowing him he probably got it wrong, hes the one that forced einstein fermi et al from the academy,

Ah, Mystery Science Theater 3000. To this day, I still enjoy watching that show...
Still reading Airlords of the Han while at the park. While indoors back at home, I am reading some Uncanny X-men. The 250's and 260's, deep into the Chris Claremont run. The stories are wild and random, of course. The transitions between stories are brief, the consequences of stories are almost glossed over. Plot lines are left dangling for seemingly years. (Oh, you want to know what's going on with Storm or Wolverine? Too bad! Here's three issues of Forge! Yeah, he wasn't even mentioned in the previous twelves issues, but he's still around!) And yet, somehow, its still a compelling read. I can understand how the book dominated the comics world back in the day.

I agree, Old Time Radio ads are as interesting as the shows. There is SO MUCH out there to listen to as well, years of listening. And some of it is truly fantastic, just great stuff like Gunsmoke and Dragnet. They're way better than the TV shows.

One of my favorite OTR shows is "Information Please" which is like a quiz show, but for an extremely learned and intelligent as well as talented regular cast of experts. Its kind of like those Brit shows but not goofy and idiotic. Its amazing and fun and grown up and I learn stuff every episode.

Now all movies about writers suffer from the same problem: you can't make someone sitting and typing, or sitting and dictating, visually interesting and dramatic.
So they padded it out with dramatic flashbacks of what turned Mank against his prior friendship with Hearst and Marion Davies. You'll never guess: it seems that Hearst didn't want Upton Sinclair to be governor of California. Shocking, right? And he actually made some campaign ads supporting Sinclair's opponent. And -- sit down for this -- those campaign ads may not have been rigorously factual in all their statements!
Has anyone ever tried to describe what Upton Sinclair would have been like as governor? His admin would have been, at the best case, an ineffectual trainwreck. At worst he could have destroyed California's economy completely, slowing recovery from the Depression by a few years and possibly extending World War II.

Some clocks (I have one that automatic and one that there's a button for) provide for an automatic setting. Sometimes a switch or button so you don't have to go thru the whole rigamarole to reset it.
I don't bother changing them anymore cause being retired the only times I have to be somewhere is a doctors appointment.

Well the census people are saying that 67% or registered voters voted in 2020. A record sure, but my math says the US population over 18 is 328 million and 70% of them are registered to vote which leaves us with 229 million of which 67% actually voted which gives us a total of 153 million votes cast.
Problem is they claim that almost 156 million votes were cast in November 2020.

Rockwell is a beloved but underrated painter, the man had immense talent. He just turned his talent into modern earnings. I mean he was doing no different than DaVinci and Rembrandt and Cezanne, he just did it with the modern market rather than the renaissance one. Back then, all the money was with rich donors and royalty, so that's who you painted for. In the 20th century, all the money was with businesses, so you painted for them, if you were smart.

I've never understood the appeal of Upton Sinclair.
He's one of a host of early 20th century people who is vastly overrated because they were popular with the hard left academics and elites. Objectively viewed, most of them were hacks but were promoting the "correct" position on things, so were beloved far beyond their ability and quality. Like Hemingway and Picasso

The election of '20 reminds me when I ran for the treasurer of a communal house I lived in in New Haven. Chock full of Yalies and UNH and others.
I had told people that we'd have to crack down on dues cause the house needed the money for infrastructure/repairs.
The day of the ballot count there were 24 more votes than the total of people who could vote. The President of the House figures that at least 3 people stuffed the ballot box (a jar with a screw on lid) because of the differences in penmanship.
I told them all to F*** themselves cause I wasn't going to pay for the stuff that needed to be done if they weren't going to. (the current treasurer was a druggy and drug seller who let everyone slide on their dues payment and let some others that weren't members stay.
Sort of an economy vision of the future. (not equating myself with Trump just the abhorrence of the voters for not wanting to face the truth. That there were a lot of ivy leaguers and future leaders or at least middle management I should've taken a hint back then and started looking for a place in the woods to live.

I understand the point you're making but this is wrong.
Art history is fascinating, people get the feeling that somehow these ancient artists were sitting around a studio painting what the muses moved them to. Almost all of their work was on commission: "I want a painting of x, here are some florins" They made the work their own, but it was work for hire, making what they were hired to do.
The Mona Lisa wasn't a side project of inspiration, it was a portrait.
Rockwell did the same thing: he painted for hire from people who had money and wanted a specific image. But he made it his own and showed tremendous talent and inspiration in the process.

Its like classical music, almost all of it was done on commission: "I want a symphony, here are some Ducats." This was a job, its not like they were given money to just survive and create whatever they wanted except in some extremely rare (and short-term) examples. The concept of welfare paying artists to just do art is extremely modern and new and stupid. All art requires pressure because otherwise artists will just screw around doing nothing for as long as possible.

Most writing advice is terrible because it either assumes something that they stumbled on to (like CJ Box) or never analyzed enough to understand or pass on. Being able to write does not mean you have a shred of skill in teaching people HOW to write.
Loren D Estleman has some good advice on it, but the problem is that with even the good advice, its almost all is contingent on being like that author.
For example, Louis L'Amour was famously unfazed by anything, he could write during an earthquake in a house that's on fire. Very few writers can do that. Teaching people who to write depends a lot on their style and personality.

No. There's virtually no similarities whatsoever between the radio show and Dashiell Hammett's writing. They substituted cute wordplay for his brilliant dialog, and the plots are pretty weak. Dash had almost nothing to do with the radio show beyond collecting checks so he could drink more.

And that's not even mentioning the "march through the institutions" and now the blatant destruction of the only non-violent way to fight back: Free and fair elections.

All Hail Eris, "The Way of the House-Husband" is indeed hilarious. The yakuza filter on discount sales, cleaning methods, etc. is great. I think at one point he develops an apprentice to the Way too.
There's also "Oju to Banken-kun" (A girl and her guard dog) which isn't as over-the-top but also funny, with the granddaughter of a yakuza desperate for a normal high-school life and her bodyguard disguising himself as a high school student and getting caught up in the usual Japanese school tropes (and not being able to shoot anybody, which chafes him mightily). Could be considered cozy yakuza

The Marlowe show is a bit better in terms of tone and writing, but still not really like the books. Again, Chandler had almost nothing to do with the show other than picking up a check to drink himself to death.
There's a pretty fun audioplay of Chandler working with Billy Wilder trying to rewrite Double Indemnity into a better story for the screenplay. Wilder is both amazed at Chandler's stunning ability with words and plotting and infuriated at his attitude and pretending he wasn't drinking constantly.

It was significantly more complex and a lot more was happening for a lot longer which led to the revolution. That's like saying WW2 started because Pearl Harbor was bombed. Technically, but there was like a decade of stuff leading up to that and a lot more going on around the world.

I understand that artists had patrons who dictated what they did. DaVinci travelled throughout Europe (I think all the chateaus in the Loire valley have examples of what he did on site) and was a lot more than just an artist.

I actually did that very deliberately my first book: I tried to write a fantasy as Louis L'Amour would have done it. But after a few chapters it was really just me. I still think its an interesting exercise, though.

Not to sound like an arrogant snob but I've never understood the appeal of Rockwell as anything more than the Charles Schultz of magazine illustrators.
Putting aside the fact that he did it with a brush rather than a camera, I think if you saw his work in person your mind would change significantly. Quite a few artists are like that (especially impressionists). Seeing their work for real rather than a print changes everything.

I believe that to be a writer you must have a need to write. The rest; style, pacing, background etc. can all come later after you've got that need out. Sometimes folks only have one book in them. Most have none but think they do.
Very few have a infinite string of writings to put on paper.
It also helps that what you have to say resonates with a lot of people or entertains them.

I think everyone has a limited number of books in them, but some keep going anyway because it pays. CS Lewis just reached a point where he couldn't write any more, there was nothing left in the tank. Which was tragic, but understandable. Better to stop when you're out than keep going like some.
I mean, for some that tank is freaking huge: Mary Faulkner, Louis L'Amour, Barbara Cartland, Isaac Asimov, Agatha Christie, Alexandre Dumas, etc. But even they kinda ran out of gas and kept going.

The odd thing is that some of L'Amour's best books came out at the end of his life, when he shifted gears and started really bearing down on a story. Most of his cowboy stuff, while fun, is pretty much a template. He'll start with a really interesting concept and then many of them end up bumping into the same ruts and rolling into the sunset just like 10 other books.

I wanted fantasy stories that were not gigantic doorstops in 18 parts. Stories about people rather than vast events, small stories about life instead of gigantic epics over centuries of time. A little of that is okay, but all fantasy now seems to be that kind of thing.

One needs to look closely at the conditions and perceptions that were relevant and predominant at the time of any of these uprisings.
Most of those that stood up felt that they had no choice. That they knew they were next on the list for arrest, imprisonment and/or death.
We also live at a time of plenty and lots of entertainment to distract and release ones emotions.
That allows one to decide that they're not ready to throw it all away for only the possibility of oppressive actions to them personally.
And defensive actions don't work because that's one on one; you against the oppressor. No one knows about it so they can't join you.
A grouping must be the target of imminent threat and action for members of that group to decide to take action. For one thing they need to know when and where so they can be there prepared. I doubt the government will give us fair warning. One of the downsides to relying on socializing on social media. No one knows their further neighbors just the closer ones.

I've also noted that back in the old unenlightened Twentieth Century people could distinguish between the Nazi Party and the nation of Germany. Now it seems like every pop historian talks about "Nazi planes" in the Battle of Britain or "Nazi soldiers" in the Normandy campaign. The sophisticated moderns are much more simplistic than the people actually writing wartime propaganda.

A grouping must be the target of imminent threat and action for members of that group to decide to take action. For one thing they need to know when and where so they can be there prepared. I doubt the government will give us fair warning. One of the downsides to relying on socializing on social media. No one knows their further neighbors just the closer ones.

I'm a big believer in the premise the individual freedom will be defended by individual action. Only after that becomes prevalent will groups form.

Pooky got me "The Testament" by John Grisham at a library book sale. ($0.25!) It started off with Grisham's usual interesting premise and legal quandary, but then it veered off into the Pantanal swamp and... Christian mission work. I found myself fascinated by how Grisham demonstrated the need for the main character to be redeemed and how he eventually filled his God-shaped hole. Highly recommended for a weekend read.

When I was a kid, growing up in Canada, the CBC used to play a lot of old-time radio shows from the BBC. I loved the comedy shows: The Goon Show, Hancock's Half Hour, and Lines From My Grandfather's forehead. But there were also some really fun quiz shows, specifically My Music, and My Word. They're available on YouTube, and they are so urbane, so effortlessly erudite yet entertaining, I recommend you check them out.

I just got a 10" Fire HD, the version that came out last week. It comes with Alexa WHICH I DO NOT WANT but it can be turned off. That's what I did. And I check now and then to be sure it is still turned off.

Now, we're reading Ronald Clark's biography of Einstein. The book is 50 years old, but Clark had the advantage of being able to interview many people who knew Einstein, and who since have passed on. Also, he writes very, very well: the book is very well organized, and his prose is a model of elegance and clarity. Well worth reading.
