The Biden administration ended an inquiry into a possible connection between the origins of the novel coronavirus and a lab in Wuhan, a CNN report published Tuesday claims. Well, this is a cynical way to look at it, and we resent it very much.
Our friends on the other side of the aisle got involved with China for political purposes and to help consolidate power. This is indeed contemptible, but it is all water over the dam and there's little point in continuing to go on about it.
We, however, are nothing like that. We got involved with China for the purposes of economic development. We have improved China's standard of living while leveraging unrestricted free trade to improve domestic economic efficiency and reduce prices for American consumers. Our pursuits with China have been win/win, and the kind of characterization quoted here helps no one.

My thesis is that "compelling proof" is not needed, and the lack of it is actually harmful for the Democrats.
The continual doubts about what really happened, with many many proven examples of low level cheating (e.g. in Michigan), and the suspicious attempts by the Democrats and Never Trump to stop the AZ audit only cements the belief in the voter's minds that the election is illegitimate.
As is often the case, voter actions and opinions are based on limited data and a general sense of what is going on, not on hard proof.
So the COVID cheat election won the battle, but we don't know if they won the war. And they clearly didn't succeed in subjugating the population. I'm seeing a lot of Trump 2024 bumper stickers.

There is a *very* illuminating difference to be found along these lines.
In 2000, there was a lot of talk (outside of FL) about the accuracy and legitimacy of the Diebold voting machines. In response to those concerns and claims of fraud, Diebold was actively involved in investigations, cooperated with the authorities, held their own press conferences, opened up a lot of the system for inspection, etc. Some flaws *were* identified, which they very publicly worked to correct.
In 2020, there was a lot of talk about the accuracy and legitimacy of the Dominion voting machines. In response to those concerns and claims of fraud, Dominion pulled up stakes, closed their headquarters, launched scores of billion-dollar lawsuits, issued a canned press release and opposes any auditing.
It's literally a study in opposites.

The law is clear that the kind of research going on in Wuhan was illegal if it occurred in the United States. Using your position to funnel money to external proxy that engages in activity that is illegal for you to pursue is not performing your "duty" and *not* doing those things is not dereliction of duty.
Indeed, doing that has many names, and none of them are good. It's fraud. It's also criminal conspiracy. But it isn't duty.

I'm a bit concerned that this "public debate" is going to boil down to who can PROVE where the virus started.
I think this is proveable, but the issue in context should be linked to the demonstrable deception and evasiveness of the Chinese early in the epidemic, that allowed it to become a pandemic.
Just as Trump was right that they're not after him so much as after us, with him in the way, we need to show that our legitimate beef with China goes beyond a single , contested issue of the virus' origin.

The Wuhan lab's website used to have all sorts of information on it about how it was connected to the CCP. That stuff has since been purged from the site, but it's no secret that the CCP controlled and used the research going on in that lab, and there is no damn excuse in the world why U.S. tax dollars should have been supporting any of it.

My understanding - which may well be wrong - is that "gain of function" research is always dangerous but not always nefarious because one of (the primary) justification for it is to pursue vaccine and antiviral pharmaceutical research.

Perhaps. I don't know. I'm not a virologist or a pharma researcher and can't really say. I know from some of what I've read that the big focus was figuring out how to battle something specific - SARS - which can mutate easily and so having a lot of similar things to check for efficacy would be helpful.
But I don't even play one on TV.

Here's one method of calming down:
empty your mind through this. Or just focus on breathing. That stops the brain from buzzing. draw in a breath smoothly and continuously for a count of six, making sure to fully fill the lungs (letting the belly get full and round -- the bottom of the lungs are there)
then exhale that same breath for a count of six, again, smoothly. tighten your abdomen to force the last of the air out at the end.
now, HOLD on the empty belly for a count of 4 (or 6, if you've been doing it a while)
now inhale again for a count of six, etc.

The theory here is that by holding on the empty lungs, you are reducing the oxygen levels in your blood, which the body associates with restfulness/sleepiness/torpor. When you're energized and active, you breath harder and get more oxygen in the blood. when you're inactive, you have less.
so the idea here is to hack this system and work backwards. rather than calmness leading to lower oxygen levels, you'll use lower oxygen levels to trick the body into calmness

For the guys joking about shaving with "K-Bars" and whatnot in the previous thread there are companies out there that make medieval looking straight razors that resemble swords and knives. I entertained getting a straight shaving blade that was an axe. Cost $$$ for custom stuff like that though and a pain in the ass to maintain the blades if you actually use them(stones/strops). Something to look into if you are interested.
The Japanese razor company I mentioned, Feather makes a "straight-razor" and Kamisori style(basically a straight) that uses their disposable blades.
A caveat to my recommendation in the previous thread for the Occam OREN razor that uses the Feather Razors should anyone be interested. DO NOT USE the Feather Super Professional blade as a beginner. It is literally shaving with a scalpel as it is scalpel sharp! Feather Pro Guard is the way to go.
Many forums are full of Feather Super Professional horror stories from noobs that didn't know better.

Holding your breath won't increase O2 in your blood. It's largely governed by the partial pressure of O2. As O2 is absorbed the partial pressure decreases, so O2 stops entering your blood. You then need a new breath with higher partial pressure O2 to get more.

The key is it feels incredibly stupid to do but after about 30 seconds or so of doing this with high concentration, it calms you.
I personally think the reason it works so well is it's a "hack" that taps into the feature of prayer that God built in to us. What I mean is, I pretty much get the same feeling from prayer.

In my very liberal town (we've had just one republican mayor for only 2 years in the entire 30 years I have lived here) - every single liberal school board member was just tossed out on their keisters in a local election two weeks ago...that type of thing just doesn't happen in a town the local press suggests is so super woke!

For that matter, how reproducible are any poll results? I've never seen replicate determinations of any of them.

I know I read early on somewhere (Jim Hoft, I think) that State Dept personnel sounded the alarm about inadequacies at the Wuhan lab, then the Obama administration told Fauci to stop funding the gain of function research, then Fauci did an end-around by letting two contracts with third parties to continue the funding.

After the pandemic started Peter Daszak got involved in the WHO probe, and worked diligently to suppress the lab leak theory at the onset of the pandemic. He was on the radio, and quoted by the papers as "debunking" the theory. Everyone forgot to mention - he was culpable for the research that led to the lab leak, and could be ultimately held accountable for his poor decisions.
