62 From the Tennyson poem. She's cursed with having to stay in a tower, she can never look out her window lest she dies, and she spends all her time weaving a tapestry that contains images of the part of the world she sees through a reflection in her mirror.

Then one day the heartthrob Lancelot comes by her window, and boom it's over for her.

Posted by: banana Dream at May 21, 2021 08:44 AM (yh2er)

72 I like the way the mirror is actually reflecting the embroidery in the room as well as the scene beyond the window (which we can't see). But what exactly is she weaving? It doesn't look anything like the landscape that's reflected in the mirror, which is what she's supposed to be weaving.

Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at May 21, 2021 08:44 AM (+HI7g)

73 Damn! I love paintings like this. The dramatic pose, her wild hair, the huge variety of shapes (look at the differing supports of the ring around her), and the use of brilliant, jewel-like colors, make for a magical powerful scene. I can't even begin to go through all the symbols used but it would be worth the study.

Like yesterday's example, this one appeals to the magic in our lives. Moments and situations, superbly expressed, that are special and worthy of wonder and contemplation, away from the swill of corruption that infests so much these days.

Thanks, as always, to CBD for these daily excursions. They really help.

115 I think the poem is contemplating the choice between Life and Art. The Lady of Shalott is an artist, weaving her fantastic tapestry which is filtered to her via the magic mirror. When she tries to experience Life directly (and to do it, she turns her back on her mirror to look out the window) she dies as an artist.

Also, Lancelot is physically described in great detail - 3.5 whole stanzas devoted to him! Yet in the end he's a superficial prick. Even the people who don't know what's happened to her are awed and spooked by the Lady when they see her corpse floating past, but he just makes a flippant remark about how pretty she is and moves on.

My name is in doomsday, we were kicked out of what became the UK because we sided with Cromwell.

My disdain for the French is not 600 years old it is a constant thing given France has been ratf*cking America literally my whole life.

I was -6 when they f*cked NATO and demanded US forces leave Fwance.

I remember their antics on denying us overflight when we bombed Libya.

They are barely a better ally to America than Russia, which is not an ally.

She's just an elderly woman who wears way too much make-up. It makes her look even older than she is. It also makes her look like she's trying much too hard to look younger than she is. I'll take the opposite position. Kids have but one childhood, and I don't see a problem supporting their interests if it is as keen as one that takes them to a national competition, especially in the arts, sciences, or even sports. Especially, when the other side is indoctrinating their kids to chop off their dangly bits and march in the streets in protest of whatever the oligarchs are calling for in the moment.

Sentence Cornyn to have to work a month with a trucker, especially a flatbed driver. Wrasslin' tarp in howling wind and pouring rain, and then dragging his bone-soaked carcass up into the cab to try to dry off a bit, before setting out for another Logbook Maximum Day. Then, either doing Driver's Rest in the sleeper, or checking into some NoTellMoTel, and hoping to bag enough zzz's to make the logbook legal again before the next road segment.

You'd go to nationals if you won everything local. I was in music. I won solo #1 for my city, then state, then tri-state. I don't think there was anything after that. Band, debate, sports were the same. I was in the poor kid section of town and we had to sell stuff and do private shows for rich people like the Koch brothers or Pepsico execs to travel. But we did it.

436 Is this close? And if so, is it a real knee-slapper (or just to Coast Guard folks)?

Posted by: 496 at May 21, 2021 10:01 AM (U1eOr)

See inter-service rivalry and ribbing explanation above. It is a joke to a receptive crowd, one which a Coastie would appreciate, but you wouldn't tell to a USN Academy graduating class.

437 Regionals, nationals... my favourite is in 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' where the beauty pageant mom is obsessed with going to State - the level she never made it to in her day because she suddenly got pregnant.

NO worries.

I can adjust accordingly.

440 Somebody tell me how the first 3 posts are "On topic" and I got 100-commented a month or so back just for making an ironic comment on a painting as it related to a current event?

Probably Gov as in Government. Not Governor.

443 When some dipshits in Dutch land tried some taxing the farmers bullshit, the farmers blocked up the highways with their tractors until they relented.

I'd love to see major arteries of the US lined for miles with 80,000 lb roadblocks.

Hell, i'd cater the damn thing.

OK - Thanks. Pretty much what I figured. And yes, that should have been a receptive crowd. Someone famous once warned us to never underestimate Biden's ability to fuck something up.

445 I think marching band for us is more about the experience and comradarie. I don't want to let loose an awkward 9th grader in a high school of 3000+ without a rudder. I've heard the marching band is tight knit and the parents are pretty involved so it helps to keep the kids from drifting into stuff they shouldn't. It also builds real teamwork when the tuba players have to load and unload the semi...lol!

446 Grammie, if it hasn't been mentioned already, search for

America's Frontline Doctors

You pay the $90, talk to an actual doctor, and figure out if you need ivermectin, hcq, etc, and they mail you the medicine.

447 Ask the dipshits where are all the plans are for the new power plants that they will require. Easements, property acquisition, fighting all the NIMBY people, etc.

Fun fact - 746 Watts is one horsepower. In a perfect electric car and charging system - running a 100 HP car for one hour would require about 75 kWh of juice. If you did this at night over eight hours, with your 240VAC home service ? Just short of 40A - all night long. That'll be expensive as Hell - and we do not have that capacity.

448 303 John Cornyn has lost his fucking mind. He is proposing a 25cent per mile TAX on truckers.
Posted by: Ben Had at May 21, 2021 09:40 AM (j4PhG)

LOLOLOLOL...

It's Freaky Friday, and Cornyn leads off with a strong take.

25 cents a mile...wow!

449 I like how no one talks about the $5000 fast charger you'd need to pay to have installed in your garage.

Oh, and also the $30k garage.

so 2.5 decidollars per meter?
Posted by: Warai-otoko at May 21, 2021 09:55 AM (6FeV1)

Or, effectively 25 cents per minute while working.
