Spooky. Very strange. This leaves me feeling uneasy but I can't quite pinpoint why. It might be an aggregate of the whole thing. The red background and earth, the flat colors, the fact that she looks like an alien. The creepy way the stone (egg?) is levitating on her lap. The fact that she's sitting, but not on any discernible furniture and that the invisible furniture is too tall for her. Her gown - up in the bust area - is sexy but off-putting.
Very weird. It almost looks like an acid-tripping Catholic painted an idealized Deja Thoris on her Martian throne. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 25, 2021 08:34 AM (Jsjd7) 25

Salty,
I love reading that from you in the mornings. It really rings true in my life. I smile at the leftists who are so angry and miserable and it makes them crazy. I stopped on the sidewalk on. Saturday as I was walking to the store and offered to take a picture of a man and his daughter. He was trying the selfie thing. He looked at me and gave me a huge grin and handed over his phone and took his daughter in his arms and they both said "cheese!" He thanked me and said he couldn't remember the last time he had a kind, spontaneous interaction with a stranger. Little girl waved at me and I went on my way. Best "can you take our picture" moment I ever had was at Rushmore. I was walking around and a nice Japanese family asked me to take their picture. They didn't speak much English (and I speak no Japanese), so much gesturing was involved.
We worked it out, and they were posing below the monument and I went to take their picture. They had a fancy digital camera that auto-focused on faces. You may see where this is going. The camera was focusing on the giant president heads rather than their smaller human heads. And I couldn't figure out how to turn it off because everything was in Japanese. I gestured for the husband/father to come over and showed him the problem. He burst out laughing - I mean loud and sustained laughter. Then he whizzed through the menus, turned the feature off, rejoined his family and I got a couple of pictures. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 25, 2021 09:00 AM (Jsjd7) 182

On Sunday morning when there was nobody on the highway I felt the need for speed. With radar/laser detector on got up to 120. Car felt like buttah, begging me to go faster. But anything over 50 mph gets you thrown in jail automatically in my area so I decided not to push it.
Also made me want to book a flight to Munich. Driving on the autobahn is a hell of a thrill. You get acclimated pretty fast too. Like 100 is slow and you get pissed off at someone in the left lane in front of you going 120 not getting out of the way fast enough making you brake. And with all that happening the car deathrate is significantly lower there than here. You quickly understand the joke about BMWs and cup holders. For years bmw refused to put in cup holders thinking who the fuck is drinking while driving, not quite understanding the North American driver. When you are driving at the speeds Germans drive, 100% of your attention is on the road, not sipping coffee or eating a breakfast burrito. Posted by: Joe XiDen at May 25, 2021 09:25 AM (YBE1o) 310

The Germans who work at those places all speak perfect English and are happy to do so. Case in point on Norm MacDonald and Conan O'Brien. Both are *extremely* good at what they do. This segment is a prime example. It's very funny and (unlike much of Norm's stuff) fast-paced in the second half. On the surface, it's amusing and good for a chuckle.
Under the surface though, this is absolutely comically brilliant. Norm is directly channeling Rodney Dangerfield - even using a couple Dangerfield's jokes directly. Seamlessly, Conan becomes Johnny Carson and perfectly apes Carson's interjections and asides. If you've ever seen Carson or Dangerfield, this segment becomes wildly funnier at a whole different level. It's astonishingly funny as a result, and it's almost entirely a meta-joke. https://youtu.be/L7K-kaelQEs Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 25, 2021 09:42 AM (Jsjd7) Posted by: TheJamesMadison, in a dangerous profession with a Hawksian woman at my side at May 25, 2021 09:42 AM (LvTSG) 391

F-111A: TF-30P6 engines, intakes with splitter plates, original avionics
F-111B: TF-30P6 engines, intakes with splitter plates, AWG-9 fire control system, blunt nose, and arrester equipment plus AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. And "not all the thrust in Christiandom could make it a fighter." F-111C: same as the F-111A except having FB-111A wings and wheels. RAAF only. F-111D: no splitter plates and the over-complicated Mark II avionics. D crews always tried to sell themselves as fighters by always carrying the M-61 in the bomb bay. F-111E: different TF-30 engine. no splitter plates on the intakes, and almost -A avionics. F-111F: another engine, no splitter plate, and avionics that was a mix of E and D. Configured to carry the Pave Tack pod in the bomb bay so was a self-lasing smart bomber. FB-111A: SAC version of the Earth Pig. Wings six feet longer. Undercarriage strengthened. Nuclear capable. When retired some were sold to Australia as F-111Gs. EF-111A: -A with no offensive weapons and fitted with a modified ALQ-99 jammer system from the EA-6B Prowler. Entry level is around $65K, which isn't too bad for a true American supercar. Seems to be the market Chevy is going for.

The F-14A and F-14B both had TF-30 engines, holdovers from the F-111 program. So there were some flight parameters a Naval Aviator flew only at great risk when honking a Turkey in ACM.
Hultgreen on approach to the boat got a wave off. Banked left per SOP and the left engine stalled. So the plane suddenly started to really bank hard left and into the ocean. Ejection was initiated and the footage IIRC shows the RIO skipping across the waves. By the time the sequencer allowed Hultgreen to eject her GRU-7A seat fired directly into the ocean and she was killed. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 25, 2021 09:59 AM (um4AQ) 477

I often wonder - no sarcasm intended - what is it about a particular piece of art that other people like. What is it that makes them say "good" or "bad" ? To me, the overall sum of the parts makes no sense. Yet, each individual part is really, really good. And the composition - something I didn't even know existed a few years ago - is just how I like it.
I've never bought into the notion that you can learn something about someone by how they golf. But I do believe you can study them - quite well - by how they drive. I'm starting to think studying their tastes in the visual arts, music, and literature works similar - but not exactly. Posted by: Silver Bullet at May 25, 2021 10:04 AM (ILmBq) 501
