The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out. Vaclav Havel

*

Quote II

“What really is at play here, dear family, is that other shepherds are offended that I simply state the fact that they have abandoned their sheep in a time of need,” Fr. James Altman

*

Quote III

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.Jesus speaking to his disciples Matthew 6:25-28

*

Quote IV

“Jail is the most restrictive condition, depriving the accused of liberty, as well as access to jobs, education, family, and the ability to aid in their defense.” Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans

*

Quote V

“I am thrilled to see the complete reversal of the last discriminatory restrictions against churches in California, knowing this case will act as a precedent, not only in our state but also in our nation,” Harvest Rock’s senior pastor Ché Ahn

No offense. But you are a retarded high school drop out. Frankly my dogs make more sense than you do.

Primarily known for her astounding expertise on climate change and fossil fuels, the 18-year-old Swedish activist has expanded her wealth of knowledge to include medicine, agriculture, and forestry.

"Millions have died from COVID-19, Zika, Ebola, West Nile Fever, SARS, MERS," Saint Great advised.

"Up to 75% of all new diseases come from other animals. Because of the way we farm and treat nature, cutting down forests and destroying habitats, we are creating the perfect conditions for diseases to spill over from one animal to another and to us. The next pandemic could be much, much worse. But we can change."

Not feeling the "Humanitarian" part this evening.

What else has the Kung Flu fouled up? Fireworks.

s we look ahead to our first summer holiday this weekend, it’s the Fourth of July fireworks distributors say you should start shopping for now.

WCCO shares the supply and demand concerns that could play a part in your plans.

The interstate stores are a staple of western Wisconsin. But in Baldwin, some of Fireworks City shelves’ are looking more like the hand sanitizer aisle from months gone by. Cele Rasmussen is Fireworks City’s co-owner.

“Buy early because stock is short,” Rasmussen said.

He has been in the fireworks business for the last 23 years, and he’s never seen anything like this.

“I’d say we’re short by about 30%,” he said.

Doesn't the phrase "Not under my roof" also carry to the backyard?

Fight With Parents Inspires Teen to Dig Underground Cave in His Backyard

A Spanish teenager who started digging a hole in his backyard after an argument with his parents, six years ago, is now the proud owner of an underground cave in his own backyard.

Andres Canto was 14 when he first headed into his backyard in Alicante, Spain, with a pickaxe, following an argument with his parents. They wouldn’t let him go put into town wearing a track suit, so he decided to stay home and let off some steam by digging a hole. The thing he hadn’t planned one was enjoying digging as much as he did. Andres found that he loved coming back to his growing hole every evening, after classes, and just expanding it little by little. He eventually brought a friend to help him with the digging, and together they turned the hole into an impressive cave.

Bubble expert? Here I thought it was the worm.

IN 2015, FLUID PHYSICIST ROBERTO Zenit had a short conversation that turned into a five-year research project. Zenit, who calls himself a “bubble expert, despite how funny it sounds,” was intrigued when a student told him that bubbles play a crucial part in the production of mezcal, a distilled liquor made from agave plants by rural communities in Mexico. The student, whose family had distilled mezcal for generations, told him that producers tested if the liquor had the right amount of alcohol by squirting it into a small container and observing the lifetime of bubbles that form on the surface. If the bubbles, or “pearls,” last about 30 seconds, the mezcal is ready. If they don’t, the mezcal needs more distillation to reach the ideal alcohol content.

Five years later, Zenit and a team of researchers from three different universities proved that the traditional technique not only has sound scientific basis, but that the physics behind it is quite complex. Their findings were published in Scientific Reports.

Cycling and the Power of White Privilege - “ANTI-RACIST EFFORTS WITHIN CYCLING MUST MOVE BEYOND THE EUPHEMISMS OF INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, SENSITIVITY, AND ALLYSHIP, AND BEGIN TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THE DIMENSIONS OF POWER AT PLAY.”

When George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others were killed by the police in 2020, forcing the nation into a racial reckoning, the cycling industry responded with promises to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Fuji announced it was suspending the sale of their bikes to police departments, while various other industry leaders committed themselves to increasing diversity in the sport of cycling.

Yet, looking at the actions of some cyclists at the top of the sport, along with their sponsors, I see how the system of privileges and advantages afforded to white people remains strongly rooted both inside and outside the sport of cycling.

It’s time for cycling to think beyond white fragility, white privilege, implicit bias, and microaggressions, and begin to think about its root cause. Cycling must reject interventions that continue to individualize anti-Black racism, and work to break down the structures that allow whiteness to retain power in the sport.

Would You Buy That Truck or SUV If You Knew It Endangered Pedestrians?

A bill in New York hopes to add pedestrian safety ratings to vehicles. They should be standard nationwide.

It’s no secret that Americans drove less during the first year of the pandemic. But you may have heard that despite fewer people on the road, risky driving behavior increased. Now, the picture has become even bleaker: pedestrian deaths rose almost 5% in 2020 over the year before “in the largest annual increase of the pedestrian fatality rate since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started tabulating such crashes,” as Bloomberg reported. After years of decline, pedestrian deaths have been on the uptick for over a decade.

Florida man. Alcohol. Pizza and ta-da you get: Genius Award Winner.

A Florida Man yesterday struck his daughter in the face with a slice of pizza, resulting in his arrest for battery, police report.

Cops responding to a disturbance call at the victim’s Vero Beach home discovered the 20-year-old with “what looked to be tomato sauce on the left side of her face.” Inside the residence’s front door, the ground was “covered with pizza toppings,” according to an arrest affidavit.

The victim told police that her father, Tyler Worden, 41, came to her home Sunday afternoon to drop pizza off. But when she told Worden that she was not feeling well and asked him to leave, he began arguing with her.

When the woman sought to close the front door, Worden allegedly threw a pizza slice at his daughter, striking her in the face.

After the woman dialed 911, cops arrived at the residence and questioned Worden, who admitted throwing the pizza, but claimed he thought the door was shut at the time. An officer noted that he detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Worden’s breath.

Pictured above, Worden was arrested for battery and booked into the Indian River County jail on the misdemeanor charge. He was released from custody this afternoon upon posting $500 bond, and has been ordered by a judge to have no contact with his daughter.

Worden, who works as a chef, is scheduled to be arraigned on June 15.

Gene Therapy Partially Restores Vision in Blind Patient in First Case of Its Kind

A blind man who lost his sight to a neurodegenerative eye disease decades ago has had his vision partially restored, thanks to a first-of-its-kind experimental gene therapy.

The patient in question, a 58-year-old male, was diagnosed 40 years ago with retinitis pigmentosa: a progressive, inherited group of genetic disorders that leads to loss of vision due to mutations that cause light-sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina to break down.

I took a hiatus two years ago at the end of the paterfamilias life. Caring for him had become a 26/7 affair. I was one promotion away from the BB test. I have to worry about a pile of shit to eat and drink, and how to get more. I can't stop, and not just for me. Putting together my pile is easy. It's just not in my nature to look at the birds or the flowers. And I did not pick this.

What I learned was pretty helpful for me. Maybe it will help you to. God knows you're still going to worry. What He's giving you is a reason to stop.

Whenever I start worrying about things that are out of my control, I remind myself that God is in control. I even had a piece of jewelry made that says 'But God', which is a reminder that right after I worrying about this unfixable, big huge thing, I should say, But God is in control and Sovereign.

Eventually the worry doesn't last more than a minute or two before it's over.

It's in invitation to stop, not a demand.

79 I'll retell this for the ONT crowd...

Friend just did an interview with Meb Keflesighi. For those that don't know, he is one of the greatest American runners the only man to have won an Olympic Medal, the NYC Marathon, and the Boston Marathon.

He emigrated when he was 6, and is a devout Christian.

He told the story about winning Boston in 2014. He was ready to retire from racing the year before, but he was at the finish just before the bombs went off in 2013.

He decided to run one last time in 2014. In training for the race, he memorized the names of every victim and the morning of the race he prayed for every one of them by name.

He said that he doesn't remember the race at all up to mile 15, when he looked at his watch and saw he had run the previous mile at a 4:30 per mile pace. He was in first place, and focused on the crowd chanting "USA" as he ran by. He tried to stay within himself, knowing that the race would be won or lost on Boylston Street. When he got there, he was greeted by 13,000 people screaming "USA USA" as he crossed the line, the first American to win Boston in 39 years.

I think he was touched by God's Grace for the first 15 miles.

Remember when kid's picture books were just for entertainment, maybe with a few carefully-concealed color names and number lessons thrown in? No "woke" preaching. No "David's Third Mommy is a Transgendered Donkey" storylines.

Interesting life. He was born in the U.S. to German immigrants, but they went back to Germany when he was six. His dad was drafted into the Nazi army, and spent time in a Soviet POW camp. Carle himself was drafted to dig trenches at the age of 15.

He got the fuck out and back to the U.S. as soon as he was able. Served in the United States Army during the Korean War, mostly in Germany.

Sold over 150 million books.

I recently saw someone excusing Fauci's lies because he's not doing epidemiology, he's doing public health. For example, if he tells everyone to mask up in February, the N95's would have been all gone and medical personnel would be at much higher risk. It's all for the greater good, you see. Then when he tells people masks will protect them, any mask at all, it's to tamp down panic and help people feel safe.

That kind of stuff makes me want to add an industrial sewing machine motor to the guillotine.

For example, if he tells everyone to mask up in February, the N95's would have been all gone and medical personnel would be at much higher risk. It's all for the greater good, you see. Then when he tells people masks will protect them, any mask at all, it's to tamp down panic and help people feel safe.

Private and parochial schools thrive in large, f**ked up cities. In smaller cities and rural areas, they struggle to survive. What you said has nothing to do with efficacy. You were claiming that if you ever encountered that protein again, you were OMG GONNA DIE!!!!!! Which is, you know, total bullshit.

Literally how your immune system works is by being trained to recognize antigens (proteins among them). That's why you only get mumps or measles once. Because after you've had it, your immune system is trained to recognize that protein, and knocks it down before it can infect you again. But if you get exposed to measles or mumps again, you don't OMG DIE!!! What happens? Nothing.

232 Simple question for those idiots. If masks were effective as Fauci claims (now) then how many people did he put in danger and kill by telling people not to use them for those first several months?
Posted by: buzzion at May 26, 2021 09:42 PM (vMCab)

I've been asking what the numerical standard is for the masks. N95 is for the medical applications, and indicates the size of holes in the weave. I used to work for a safety equipment manufacturer. Everything has a government mandated testable standard, and if Quality Control samples didn't meet the standard, the whole batch was reworked or trashed.

Safety glasses? Impact standards and UV testing, hard hats? impact testing at specific velocity, etc. What is the minimum standard for Fauci's absolutely necessary public everyday use mask? There isn't one. No minimum standard means no expectation of safety. The masks for the public were always a costume, a pacifier.

Posted by: Bilwis Devourer of Innocent Souls, I'm starvin' over here at May 26, 2021 09:56 PM (Wm5SB)

233 A better question: If the masks I can buy at Walgreens for 60 cents each are effective, why do medical personnel need the harder to make and more costly N95 masks?
Posted by: Gref at May 26, 2021 09:52 PM (AMIL/)

I still stun people by mentioning on the box it either say it does not prevent the spread of Covid, or claims it can be used just during emergency orders, like somehow those orders cast a scientifically magic spell and the mask now works when 6 months ago it didn't, and won't once the orders fade.

Seriously had a coworker go buggeyed when I pointed out the whole "Doesn't do what it says it won't do on the tin."

I have a full faceplate respirator. That was for grain dust. Me, I'm quite allergic to grain dust (some types worse than others). In my younger days, I just grinned and bore it. I wake up at night coughin, hacking, and wheezing.

Then one day in my early 30s, unloading a load of oats, I nearly had an asthma like attack. It hit when I was driving the truck back home, and I had to pull over the truck. There for a second, I thought I was going to pass out.

After that, I got the respirator. Filters I used were P100, not n95. The "p" means oil resistant. N is not. And 100 means 99.7% of airborne particles, size range I'm not sure. That was about the only thing -- I could hardly smell it at first, but the smell would eventually get in. But that was what stopped that shit.

There is a branch that has a (now) severely low number of people going to be able to get into Heaven. To the point where you'd have to attend church hoping the person next to you isn't getting in as they are taking away one of the rare slots you could otherwise get.

The low number probably was a thing that didn't bother the early church members, but decades or a century or more late, it might cause on to wonder what they are praying for.

Just saw this and I'm reading and trying to digest the details. The Krauts have apparently figured out the mechanism by which the A-Z vaccine causes the blood clot problems.

It's the spike protein, and something to do with the adenovirus vector they use to get into cells and cause the immune response. They modified a cold virus that is (supposedly) harmless itself and put the Covid spike protein on it.

The Krauts say it's something about the vector virus and the spike protein.

Very observant, you twit, that's purpose of jail; punish the felon and protect the innocent from him. It's secondary purpose is a warning to others of the punishment awaiting misdeeds.
Posted by: Braenyard

Your response is a non-sequitur on several levels. First, felons go to prison, not jail. Second, he's talking about pre-trial (i.e., presumed innocent) detention not post-trial punishment. Being jailed can, indeed, wreak havoc on a person's life -- especially an innocent person who can't post bail or don't get bail (such as our 1/6 political prisoners). Granted, when we're dealing with people accused of murder there's an inherent public safety aspect, but you responded to something different than what was posted.

396 And that would be one of the worst things you can do at this time, IMO, try to remove a priest the congregation has come to love him because he spoke against their decrees, but I do think the hierarchy in the church-any hierarchical church- tends to lose touch with the people. After all the Bishops tend to be the CEO and are surrounded by like minded folks. They're not regularly celebrating the Sacraments and so they think their other colleagues are right about whatever their views on politics are . We have a similar situation in my denomination-the Pastor and the Bishop are at loggerheads

Okay, I've digested enough of that paper (always read the actual paper, never depend on analysis by some reporter about it).

The cause of the blood clots is spike protein fragments getting into general circulation, and possible enhancement of the spike protein via anti-spike antibodies.

They confirmed the mechanism via which these spike fragments get into the bloodstream, which has to do with the way the adenovirus works. It's a DNA virus that gets into the nuclei of cells to do its hijacking of the cell.

Now, as the paper mentions, and I've linked to, it is known that the spike protein itself is pathogenic to endothelial cells, the type that line your blood vessels.

Spike protein getting out in general circulation is bad.

The paper says mRNA vaccines don't have this effect (that they know of), but I remember another recent study that found spike protein fragments in 3 out 13 vaccinated patients. I'm going to read that again and see if that included the mRNA vaccines types as well.

This problem with spike protein was anticipated, and it was one of the potential problems. In a normal process, all of that would've been followed up on. But in this hell-for-leather caution-to-the-wind Covid vaccine effort, all that was put aside.

The house is a split level, 2,067 sq. ft. above grade, 18,150 sq ft. lot (whatever that is in acres). My 2 sibs and I will inherit it and sell it. I can't imagine anyone buying it to live in as-is. It's not in poor condition, though it has a bunch of deferred maintenance, but with the demographics and such of NoVa these days, it's more likely to be torn down in favor of either a McMansion or two houses since it's zoned for 2. I will be kind of sad when it's sold since my parents bought it in 1973 when I was 5 and wherever I've been, I've always been able to return and stay as long as I wanted (or needed).

Don't get me started on the cyclists. I'm not talking about kids and normal people. I'm talking about yuppie type who wear the skin-tight spandex suits and the goofy helmets who are the most entitled bunch I've ever seen.

They will not get over, ride in packs that block the whole lane. Their attitude is we have as much right to the road as cars do. And they've got enough clout that they get local politicians to cater to them. My little town has wasted money putting in dedicated bike lanes in places. Made a mess.

I absolutely despise them.

At some point, like Summer before last, it stopped being political opinion, traveled through the quiet spot of seeking "clapter" and has sped into the realm of demonstrating to your neighbors who might otherwise turn you in (or turn you out) that you hate Emmanuel Goldstein completely and with all your might.

Their politics are performative. Just like their public health, appreciation for art, and taste in tofu. And probably their taste in soccer teams and brands of green tea.

Sure. If you're that kind of cyclist. You can get decent transportation/exercise bikes for $600 or so, I think I paid $800 for my most recent one (a somewhat upright commuter-bike) but I really wanted the hydraulic discs. Once I get rid of 30lb maybe I'll go buy the $2700 road bike.

It is stereotypical language looking for a stereotypical response - possibly to cement relationship within an in group, without thought or analysis.

546 Just occurred to me that the GOF research in Wuhan wouldn't have been impressive if it were easy enough for a corona virus could go from a horseshoe bat to a human. That was the exact "gain" that they were trying to engineer.

Thus the burden of proof that a virus that could affect a flying mammal, when consumed by a more distant species of lizard suddenly morphs into a virus that can infect humans.

Was it that easy? Why wasn't Wuhan trying to propagate it across species?

The "achievement" is getting the horseshoe bat virus to infect a human. How much of an "achievement" could it possibly be if it wanders there naturally?

How was it so critical to fund research when the virus could wander from one mammal to a lizard to another mammal, just by ingestion.

552 I mean have they come close to proving that a lizard eating a bat infected with a virus creates a strain that can infect humans?

I see a lot of (last year) "We think it's natural". But it doesn't sound like they even tried to get understand the vector.

To me, this new line of thinking for me makes the "wet market theory" *less* likely than a simple leak from a lab.

A guy on Gutfeld had a good point, which I'm expressing in my own way. Any country with a laboratory can have a lab leak. He said that the "wet market theory" is actually more racist, which I agreed with because it's more specific to the particular people, we're supposedly being "racist" against.

567 When Moses said "Let my people go.", who were his people? Why couldn't Moses' people just go on their own? Who did Moses tell to let his people go? What continent were they on? Were Moses' people "People-of-color"? Were the people who wouldn't let Moses' people go "People-of-Color"? Were the rulers who held Moses' people white Americans? Did white people even know about America in the time of Moses' people? So if Moses' people were held by the rulers of the continent they were on a few thousand years before Columbus, did Americans invent slavery, or did it already exist, created on the continent Moses lived on? Have those inventors ever apologized for creating the very concept of slavery? Do the descendants of those original slavers owe reparations to the descendants of those they enslaved? Let's have that discussion with The NY Times.

576 >> But it doesn't sound like they even tried to get understand the vector.

They've been looking for it for over a year and have found nothing. The original SARS did indeed naturally go from bat to human through a process with intermediate hosts. The details of all this, I don't know, but they can find evidence of this process and sort of see genetic evidence of the jumping and morphing.

The claimed benefit of this GOF shit is to understand that process better by trying to speed it up in the lab, and seeing what happens and learning enough to know how to handle it when does really happen in nature.

To me, the risks greatly outweigh any benefits.

What the Chicoms did in the Wuhan lab with this coronvirus, from what I understand was take these bat viruses they collected and then modify them by putting the furin cleavage thing in the spike protein. This is a well known technique to make a virus be able to enter and infect human cells.

That's an interesting position, barring execution (as some have previously mentioned). Maybe the judges in DC should listen to this guy regarding the so-called insurectionists being denied bail and allowed to rot in jail while they lose their homes and jobs, being denied that most basic of rights: a speedy trial. I believe the election was stolen; should I be put in jail to rot if I'm pulled over for a speeding citation based on my beliefs? But we now live in the United States of China, based upon who's running things, so I don't expect things to get any better.

In the case of the political prisoners of the Biden admin, they have been denied their right to a speedy trial; they have been denied bail by flawed reasoning (if you believe the election might have been stolen, you can't be trusted to show up for trial). They have been denied potentially excupatory evidence by the goverment (not allowed unredacted videos). The government prosecutors PROVABLY LIED about charges and admitted to such. They are held in a very, VERY liberal area, so will not be able to get a fair trial. And that's the tip of the iceberg.

Hypothesis: Raimondo was once a virologist who became obsessed with fecal bateriophage virii. He did serial passage gain of function techniques by various sodomy and ass-to-mouth passages with various barnyard animals and himself.

He then grafted on a spike protein allowing it to infect the brain. While jacking off to video of the serial passage experiments, at climax he knocked over a sample vial and infected himself.

Our Raimondo was thus born.

Now, the vaccine makers were sure the spike protein wouldn't leak into your bloddstream. This was a big concern. Now, with millions vaccinated, we know this isn't true. The spike protein, or at least fragments of it, do leak into the bloodstream.

So far, this has only produced serious blood clotting (and probably the heart inflammation seen in young adults and some other reactions) in only a few people. And also deaths in a small number of people.

But we're very early into the experiment with millions of people as test subjects. What longer term problems may these spike protein fragments, or something else not yet evident, cause?

This folks, is why it take years to get a vaccine approved for general use.

654 OK lets be honest about bicycling. Around here deep south rural if you ride a bike it's because Your car is broken down or you got a DUI.
I rode for years a road bike until it just got to dangerous to ride, some people hate bike riders with a murderous passion.
So when My truck went out of service I was able to do local trips easy by bicycle.
BUT, the majority of bicycle riders, White, Black, Asian, Latino I met were riding because they lost their licenses with DUI's.

That is the sad facts of biking reality.
