The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“First tings first, I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ, that’s No. 1. “No. 2, I want to dedicate this fight to all the people who’ve been hurt by Marxist ideologies.” UFC fighter Beneil Dariush

Quote II

"In training if a dog is perfect and never misses, and never is recorded to make a mistake, then there are a couple of problems. Either the training is not rigorous or the record keeping is bad."Law enforcement consultant Mary Cablk

Quote III

“The U.S. Constitution does not say you have a right to keep and bear arms as long as you pay what amounts to a gun tax in the form of permit fees. It says you have the right to keep and carry firearms, period.”Shane Stringer, Captain with the Mobile County Sheriffs Department and Alabama State Rep.

Quote IV

"The thought of those kids leaving our museum and having the first thing they see is the undergarments and underwear of this enormous Marilyn sculpture would be highly offensive," Grachos told the council. Louis Grachos, the director of the Palm Springs Art Museum

Quote V

“We are used to the fact that we have clean water coming from our taps we should expect clean, pollutant- and pathogen-free air” from indoor spaces Lidia Morawska, a distinguished professor in the school of earth and atmospheric sciences at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia

Not everyone in Hollywood is a Karen. Actor Ricky Schroder isn't.

Former "Silver Spoons" and "NYPD Blue" actor Ricky Schroder shared a video of a confrontation he had with a California Costco worker who wouldn’t let him enter the store without a mask.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, stores have been requiring patrons to wear a face covering of some kind in order to be allowed to shop. Many are doing it in compliance with their respective state’s mandates on masks and public gathering spaces. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week announced that fully vaccinated Americans can go without masks and social distancing, with some key exceptions.

This was the crux of the argument being made by a visibly upset Schroder as he accosted a Costco employee, who identified himself as front-end supervisor Jason, outside a store located in California.

It's not just the USA. The entire world has gone f*cking nuts.

Francisco José Contreras, deputy to Spain’s far-right Vox Party, was locked out of his Twitter account for 12 hours last week after saying “a man cannot get pregnant” because they have “no uterus or eggs.”

Scientific facts are not hate.

'Sure, you don’t get those grill marks, but have you ever stopped to wonder what’s accumulated on your BBQ over the years? Even with regular maintenance using a grill brush?' Well, my Give-A-Shit meter is broken.

The Future of Grilling Season Is a Levitating Hot Dog Roaster

Looking for a more hygienic way to roast a hot dog that doesn’t involve it rolling around on a rarely cleaned grill? Taking advantage of the Coandă effect, YouTube’s NightHawkInLight has created a bizarre BBQ alternative that instead levitates a wiener inside a red hot coil.

Even if you’re not familiar with the Coandă effect, you’ve probably seen a video or two online of it in action, and have definitely experienced it in real life. Named after Romanian inventor Henri Coandă, it describes an effect where a fluid jet—either a liquid or gas—has the tendency to cling to the contours or a convex surface. If you’ve ever tried to empty a mug into a sink and had the coffee run down the side and drip off the bottom of the mug, that’s the Coandă effect at work. But it can also be used to make objects with curved surfaces float using an air gun by generating lift that counteracts the effects of gravity, like ping pong balls, oranges, screwdrivers, and now grilling season staples.

They run multi-billion dollar deficits, vote to continue never ending wars. But now they don't want to be "in the dark" when it comes to private enterprises being hacked.

A federal government left ‘completely blind’ on cyberattacks looks to force reporting
A bipartisan group of lawmakers wants to make sure the government is never left in the dark about serious hacks again.

The Colonial Pipeline cyberattack, which led to hoarding and fuel shortages across the East Coast, is spurring new efforts in Congress to require critical companies to tell the government when they’ve been hacked.

Even leading Republicans are expressing support for regulations after this week’s chaos — a sharp change from past high-profile efforts that failed due to GOP opposition.

I can envision the Federal Bureau of Incompetence salivating about this law.

If I was looking for a new home.........This would be quite the article. But, since I'm not it's still interesting.

Visiting a ghost town is one of the closest things we have to time travel. If left undisturbed, the town remains suspended in time; perpetually stuck in the year it was abandoned. Fortunately, some ghost towns have been incorporated into state and national parks, which tend to leave them in their state of natural ruin—the most famous example being the former gold mining town of Bodie, California.

But there are at least 3,800 ghost towns located throughout the United States (in a variety of conditions), and on occasion, entire towns are up for sale. While owning your own ghost town may sound great in theory, in practice, it could be a very different story (depending on what you want to do with the abandoned property and structures).

Before even getting to that part, you have to go through the process of purchasing the ghost town—which, it turns out, is a little different than buying your average not-abandoned home. Here’s what to keep in mind if you’re in the market for a ghost town to call your own, courtesy of an article by Joe Pye on Debt.com.

Did you ever think, "Hmmm, I wonder if I should do (fill in the blank)? Perhaps I should seek advice? Dr. Manuela Joannou didn't.

Doctor apologizes for letting a registered sex offender into a retreat for sex assault survivors

'If I had a chance to do it all over again, this would not have happened,' said Dr. Manuela Joannou

The doctor running Project Trauma Support now says she regrets her decision to allow a registered sex offender to peer mentor a group of sexual assault survivors with post traumatic stress disorder under her care.

Seven female first responders and Canadian Forces veterans shared their story publicly with CBC News yesterday. They said their trust was violated by Dr. Manuela Joannou because she failed to tell them their peer mentor recently had been convicted in two separate cases of sexual assault before attending the six-day trauma retreat in July 2018.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame located in Cleveland is a f*cking joke. But, most of us knew this already.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s CEO suggested that fans who are angry about induction choices “need to expand their thinking” about what the genre really is.

Greg Harris was answering another round of queries about the class of 2021, which includes Jay-Z but not Iron Maiden. The metal legends were nominated for the first time this year even though they have been eligible for induction since 2005, but they failed to receive enough support from the 1,000 or so industry people who cast the votes.

It's a good thing she didn't have a frozen beef pie. Genius Award Winner.

MAY 13--Responding to a report of a disturbance in the potato chip aisle of a Walmart in Ohio, police Tuesday arrested a Cleveland woman for allegedly striking a female victim in the face with a 10-pound log of ground beef.

The confrontation at the store in South Euclid, a Cleveland suburb, involved two women--Maneka Garner and Precious Jackson--who once lived in the same duplex, cops say. Jackson, 36, who was battered with the ground beef, previously secured a protection order against the 25-year-old Garner.

According to police, when the pair spotted each other, Garner threatened to beat up Jackson (as well as her seven-year-old daughter, who was with Jackson at Walmart).

Garner, cops say, pulled down Jackson's mask and attempted to spit on her. When she missed the target, Garner reached into Jackson’s shopping cart and removed the prepackaged meat log, which she then used to strike the victim "a couple of times in the face," cops charge.

In the "Weapons Used" section of a South Euclid Police Department report, the ground beef is described as a "blunt object." The meat logs, seen in the above police photo, retail for around $22.

Never too old for love. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

94-Year-Olds Find Love During The Pandemic

A couple in upstate New York, both widowed twice, was determined to hang onto love during the pandemic.

John Shults and his girlfriend, Joy Morrow-Nulton, are both 94 years old.

Despite all the restrictions due to the pandemic, John and Joy were determined to make it work.

"She was worth it. It was a pain in the neck, though," John said of maintaining the relationship through the pandemic.

John's son Pete said the two would call each other every day.

"They'd find a way to get together. They did whatever it took," Pete said.

What it took, they say, was a return to simple pleasures, like long drives to nowhere, batting balloons around the house and a lot of selflessness.

65 Missed some great quality content during the day and I just have to follow up on a few things.

EU and Principled Free Trade(tm) establishmentarianism: Absolutely right on the regulation--the EU charter is something like ten thousand pages and it's all enforced. Great for crooks and cronies pretending to be bidniss-men, not so great for those trying to get stuff done. In a previous life I had to deal with some of that. Company made a very expensive piece of equipment and started selling it over there, but one of our German corporate frenzz wanted to flex its nuts so they got their regulatory frenzz to cut off the whole Eurozone market until a costly redesign was undertaken. But, y'know, like, freedom, maaaan.

That said, I will grudgingly give the EU credit for actually enforcing privacy and consumer-protection laws though. We have a lot of that on the books too but it convienently never seems to show up when it matters.

90 Feminazi dating BSOD: I love how, even within most of the individual points raised she just can't help but Psirkle Back to some flavor of the "women are morally obligated to destroy men" cult programming. Like, you can tell that she's thisclose to the revelation that her entire existence is a huge lie but that last step still escapes her. She's gonna have to take it on her own if she wants it though, because thanks to the proliferation of porn and sex toys, and the (wait for it) loosening of traditional gender roles w.r.t. a guy is obligated to provide for a girl, the days of dudes settling for doormant status with some harpy are over. As with the tranny invasion that's poised to push women out of women's sports, the militant fems did it to themselves...

I feel a little bit of sympathy for the non-crazy females who just got caught in the crossfire, but on the other hand it does come across at least for the older ones as one of those "first they came for the retards and I said nothing..." situations. Maybe there's just not a winning move here.

Their attempt to reinvent themselves and try to be serious was hilariously sad though. Oh look, KISS dropped the makeup and tried to change their sound, maybe we should do the same! Kind of interesting how many groups around that time tried to ho they had range outside the genera that made them famous only to discover the audience did not agree-or at least weren't interested in playing along.

113 Saw Iron Maiden on their first North American tour, opening for Judas Priest at Shea's Buffalo Theater, 7/6/81. We had all *heard* of them (I was in 10th grade), and how they were supposed to be the sickest, heaviest band ever and such, but with no US radio airplay yet, we were excited for Judas Priest but just very curious about this Iron Maiden.

And Maiden came out and G*d. Damn. F*cking KILLED. It was stupendous. It was amazing. It was one of the greatest things I've ever seen live on stage. Judas Priest was good that night but Iron Maiden were a revelation and everyone there knew it.

Never forget the killer climax run of "Transylvania/Phantom of the Opera" and then into their theme song, packed house on their feet in sweaty headbanging ecstasy screaming "Iron Maiden! gonna get ya- wherever you are! Iron Maiden! Gonna get ya - How near or how far!" And most of them had never heard a note by this band before! That's when I knew something very special had just happened.

They went on to bigger and better things with Dickinson, but for me, though he was fired only a few months after the show I saw, Paul D'anno was the MAN and nothing will ever beat early Maiden.

Eh, its a gimmick run for a buck that somehow managed to be "legit" in the eyes of many. I can't think of a single reason to go to Cleveland, and "Here is a picture and guitar from some band you barely remember hearing a song on the radio for" isn't remotely going to change that. The HoF is about as legit as the WWE's non-existent building/website only HoF which is heavily biased by the people in charge as well.

187 Can't really get into Styx and Kansas.

I only have the one Kansas album everyone had. Not just for the song but also the great cover art.

Styx, I enjoy a lot more while realizing it’s not great music. I think the first album I picked up was Lady and probably solely on the cover art (with my finances as a kid, I mostly bought cassettes from the Meijer Thrifty Acres bargain box). Probably it’s just memories as one of my first albums, but I still enjoy it.

Also enjoy the albums The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight (which, come to think of it, was probably the first album of theirs I bought, via the Columbia Record and Tape Club), and Paradise Theatre.

The last album of theirs I bought at the time was Kilroy Was Here, which I played a lot. Loved he whole concept. Individually the songs probably don’t stand up but it was a standout concept album.

I’ve since picked up other albums of theirs, but nothing is as memorable as those five.

260 >> That's a supply and demand issue right?

Yep. However, the lumber mills aren't increasing supply, as they usually would. They're afraid to, for one thing (fearing it's a flash in the pan), and this is the key monetary component, all the stimulus and free govt money is driving a lot of the demand. It's free money being thrown at the lumber industry thanks to Uncle and the Fed keeping rates so low.

Big Lumber is quite happy to keep supply low and rake in that free cash. And that is the classic inflationary condition of too much money chasing too few goods.

281 The thing about Hockney really gets my blood boiling. David Hockney once wrote a book about how no one can really draw or paint, the great artists all used cheats like cameras - or 'camera obscuras' during the middle ages - to do it all - apparently all the way back to Leonardo De Vinci. You see, they were all Hockney really but they had cheats!

Hockney is modern art personified - an arrogant, ignorant, talentless snake oil salesman.

Real art requires craftmanship first, knowing your materials and building a skill, like making a fine cabinet or a table with your hands. Add in a little creativity and thought, and you may, I say may, have a real work of beautiful art. David Hockney is a finger painting child compared to the masters who understood this.

I would assume they do, but, if they have to ship fuel from Houston, probably not nearly enough.

And, last I heard, a new refinery hasn't been built in decades in the US. All that has happened is expansion of existing refineries.

They don't really expect applicants to show evidence that they're trying to find a new job these days, either. It's literally free gubmint money until they stop extending the cutoff date.

There's only one way this ends, it's just a matter of time and how long the world's economic engine can run on fumes.

for the East Coast was shut down...but, no one questions why 1 pipeline
is responsible for that much fuel, and, no one questions why in the
world fuel intended for the East Coast is shipped from refineries
located in Houston.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at May 17, 2021 10:43 PM (2SdPm)

refineries are usually only in certain places. Houston is known, aka Valero. What bothers me is that a computer hack can stop the gas from flowing. I admit I sound stupid but to be honest I don't care. I recall a famous donut shop that shut down because the computer was down. I guess none of them have heard of a pencil. The computer shut down and they acted as useless as tits on a bull. To me it is not an improvement if a software glitch makes you inept in ways people of 200 years ago would not understand. The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.

It really should be tattooed on every bureaucrat.

Look at a refinery map of the US. You'll see a big hole basically in the SE. We are very dependent on those pipelines to get gas in.

One of the Colonial pipelines goes right by me. It's about a mile as the crow flies. And there's an old one that goes right through our property here. It's not used for pumping petroleum anymore. They ran some big fiber optic lines through it for a major trunk or something a while back.

One night back in the late '70s, there was a big boom. Turned out that main pipeline above sprung a leak in a spot about 2 miles away. There was a lake of diesel fuel.

They keep the tracts mowed and inspect them all the time. Back in HS, my friends and I would have a skip school outing. We'd walk the 5 miles or so back home by walking the pipeline. Had great fun and got into "meanness" as my paternal grandmother would say.

459 161 It would be interesting to see how the hell the music industry foisted rap on the population.
You see Karens bopping down the road to songs about pimps smacking their hoes, and middle manager Kyles singing about killing rival drug dealers...

I worked in a mall in about 1996 which was when it happened in my area. Over that summer, the kids who had long hair and wore metal shirts got haircuts, started wearing basketball jerseys and chains and listened to rap. I am pretty convinced the music industry did it on purpose because the grunge leaders all pretty much self imploded and stopped making product. Rap is basically post early rock and pre-Beatles music. Created by producers in a studio and the "artists" are as replaceable as Frankie Avalon. If they stop working, you get another. Product keeps coming.

My mother used to a be rural mail carrier. She retired in the early '90s. She started in the '70s. During that time, UPS was the main big package delivery service. They had drivers then with regular routes and territories.

There was no GPS, no smart phones, no nothing. The UPS drive around here shared much of his route with my mother. The dude had to know his area. Often, he would get some crazy address and/or name that wouldn't make sense.

He knew my mother's router as well as his own, and she knew his. He knew where she would be at any time, and even knew when she would make a stop to move mail around to get right at hand. So, he'd come up, show her the address, and they'd consult and could usually figure out where the package was supposed to go.

We’re talking a very rural area. They lived outside a town of less than a thousand people, about an hour away from Muskegon, Michigan.

I’m watching the tracking on whatever primitive web site UPS had at the time, and the package gets to Muskegon fine, then stops. Marked as delivered. Overseas was always their bread and butter. Their States work...At one point there were people shipping with us as the billing was so screwed up there was a chance they weren't ever going to get billed for it. There was a slip drivers were suppose to turn in for billing as well and since they never explained what it was for more than a few didn't pay it much attention to it. Oops.

My fav was the hub was Ohio (I think Cinci or close) and the pilots who brought stuff to our airport would share stories on how apparently DH would go out at night and find homeless persons to run the sorting lines as they expanded their need for employees faster than their recruitment of same.

Not a shock if you are picking people off the streets that all the obviously pill shipments all arrived at our station having been opened...for safety inspection I am sure.

That UPS driver knew us all well. More than once, to save driving out to our house if he didn't have anything, he'd leave packages when he'd see us out in the field. Say we're planting or something out in a field. We'd have a truck parked there close to the road with seed and chemicals and whatnot.

He'd just leave the package in the cab of the truck, waving at us if he caught our eye. I was on a tractor alone in one field, no truck. He stopped, flagged me down, and asked if I could take it. Small thing, which I just put behind the seat.

497 Taqiy, as I said to Tonypete earlier, Disney was kind of an orphan himself; his mom (I think) died really early in his life, and his father was emotionally distant and abusive.

There's a story that when Disney first bought his animation studio, formerly a hospital, in Burbank (which is still there) in 1928, he showed his father and his then-new wife around, so excited about the future, and all his dad could say was "what if your plans fail? what if this fails?" After a few hours, Walt finally just gave in and said "it can be turned into a hospital."

The funniest story from my mother's mail days was one I think I've told here before. It involved a city carrier, also a female, at the Simpsonville post office. She was not uneasy on the eyes. In fact could cut a fine figure, one might say.

Well, as a town carrier, she drove a little mail jeep, and would get out with a satchel on the little streets and deliver mail to door boxes and door slots. Rural carriers have to provide their own vehicles. Rural and city carriers are two different categories entirely.

Anyway, she was going up this house to put mail in the box and it had an enclosed screen front porch.

She heard something strange. Heard some guy breathing sort of choppy, "Huh, huh, huh".

She didn't pay it much attention, but when it happened the third or fourth time, she looked inside the screen porch good.

Some dude was in there with his pants down, jacking off to her.

Well, she went back and reported it. Long story short, but that got the Postal Inspectors involved. Federal law enforcement, big time. They have SWAT teams now, BTW.

I don't think "jacking off to a federal mail carrier" is a specific federal crime, but they had a number of things to charge him with. They set up a sting. Postal inspectors got telephoto lens and photographed in the act.

They threw the book at him.

Worked with a guy @DHL who claimed he threw some of the packages out at the end of the day cause he didn't want to drive all the way out in the sticks to deliver. Turns out while he might have been doing that as well, he was also swiping high value stuff like computers and pawning them, then going to the local casino and gambling. One day a very well dressed man appeared in the station, approached the guy by his van and they then walked to the office. Dumb ass even had a swiped Blockbuster gift card in his wallet. Oh, and even DHL shipped things count as "crossing State lines for commerce" so felony.

He made bail and skipped town. Last I heard was a few moths later he was jailed in Florida after driving off without paying for gas. Dumb ass judge granted him bail, he somehow posted it, and then was gone.

------------

There's some where that's not the case (and ignoring step-mothers; those are always wicked, of course). Mulan (both versions) and The Aristocats both come to mind. IIRC, Sleeping Beauty's mother is still alive, as well (though the Queen's more background scenery than character; the King, on the other hand, gets a scene or two). There's also Perdita and her owner in 101 Dalmations. Plus the mother of Lady's house in Lady and the Tramp.

There might be more, but I'd have to pull up a full list of Disney's filmography to check.

He could have, maybe not easily but also not hard, have shifted some packages so they never got checked into our station, thus making it seem like they vanished in transit (this was not as uncommon as one would want to have happen) or even take stuff checked in off the belt that was meant to go to someone else for delivery creating an issue for the station, but not pointing at him in particular.

But no, dumbass did this with packages he checked into his own van. Thus making tracking him down junior detective intern level work.

I think dead parent/s is a quick short cut to establishing why a character has it rough without having to do a lot of character building. And given many of the early Disney animated movies (and some modern ones) tend to be on the short side of a theatrical length ave I'd guess this is a story telling shortcut. Well, except for the fable ones where that is part of the story, probably for the same short cut reasons.

Another funny one. My mother's route included our house and the area around it. This was when I was a teenager, in school, maybe middle school. Anyway, my father was in the field, and my mother came by and stopped, upset. She said she thought someone was following her.

Well, that got my father fired up. He had our old '72 pickup in the field, and even had a gun in the glove box. He got in the truck, put the gun in his pocket, and watched. Sure enough, he saw this car coming up, which matched her description of it. He saw the guy slow down to a near stop when she stopped at a box down the road, the start up again when she did.

Well he just dug out in the truck, sort of jumping a little ditch right in the front of the guy, blocking him. He didn't pull the gun, but got out and hollered, "What are you doing following my wife!"

The guy quickly pulled out his badge. He was a postal inspector, doing a random check of the mail carriers, which they do.

That became a legend with the post office locally, and the local postal inspectors.

You can do all the lewd acts you want in your own home, certainly by yourself, and even with others if all are agreeable. I'd even encourage it.

However, theave falls under the category of sort of public indecent exposure and public lewdness.

If I take the ficus out on the front porch and fertilize it in plain view, I think I'd be running afoul of some standards. And if I did it when some sexy mail lady pulled up in plain view of her, I'd be running further afoul, maybe in the assaulty direction.

543 >> It is tricky.

While I hate to sound like Comey, it boils down to intent. If you accidentally happen to let someone see something, that's one thing. But if you're sort of doing on purpose, like someone who get a real thrill from doing naughty things in public, then it's a different thing.

There's the old joke about a cop who responds to some woman claiming a man is exposing himself at his window. He goes over, and looks and says, "I don't see anything". She says here, stand on this stool and look through these binoculars.

Some similar happened here. Older woman who lived in this house up at the crossroads was upset. Long story, but I figured out what it was. Some old boy had lost his car and needed a ride back and forth to work. He had worked something out, where one guy would take him part of the way home, then he'd wait for a half hour or so, and this other guy would pick him up.

He stood right near that corner at an old house place. The woman said she had seen him "exposing himself" and she had binoculars. All the guy was doing was taking a leak, in the brush at the old house place.

Yeah, I looked up the basics of these indecent exposure and similar charges. It's all about willful intent.

If you're not meaning to, it's just an accident, that's not a crime. You've got to intend to expose yourself in public.

One more funny mail story. One afternoon, my father gets a call out in our shop. It's the postmaster, who says, I don't want to upset you, but your wife may have been kidnapped on the route.

Well, hell. Postmaster hadn't called anyone else. Some lady had called and said she saw a strange, suspicious looking man driving my mother's mail vehicle, which at the time was a Jeep Cherokee with dual controls.

This postmaster was sort of a dufus and otherwise infuriating, sort of a pass the buck type who wasn't going to do any more than he absolutely had to.

Anyway, all it was was this nice old lady was the type who jumped to conclusions and would assume the worst. It was a very cold day and my mother was wearing a stocking cap and a big coat. The old lady didn't recognize her and thought it was some suspicious looking strange man driving the Jeep.

On final mama mail story. When she retired, our local podunk newspaper (This was what became of the Tribune Times -- look up Robert Quillen, famous resident of Ft. Inn, SC) did a story on her.

They found several little old lady types on my mother's route who were sad to see her go. And told the stories. I showed Miley that story. It's quite sweet.

Anyway, a rural carrier is supposed to be a "post office on wheels", providing all the services of the post office for rural customers. Said carrier is supposed to provide stamps if needed, do certified and registered mail, and weigh packages and letters and so forth.

My mother took that to heart, and happily did all that for the little old ladies and anyone else on her route. Turns out a lot of the carriers would lie and tell people, "Oh you've got to go the post office in town for that." Not so, at least at the time. I don't know what the rules are now.

At any rate, in the retirement piece, they devoted a paragraph to one of the little old ladies telling how my mother would make sure to get her the "pretty stamps" and not the ugly ones.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at May 18, 2021 01:57 AM (Mzdiz)

563
At the time my mother was carrying the mail, if a rural customer of hers needed to mail something, but didn't have a stamp, the rules and law were she could pay postage right there. My mother did that service more than a few times. So, imagine a woman standing at the mail box, who flags my mother down. She needs to mail a letter. My mother takes her money, and puts the necessary postage on herself.

Or someone needs to send a certified letter. My mother carries all the forms and stickers needed. She calculates the cost, and the person pays. Right there in the road from her Jeep, she does all the necessary things and takes the certified letter.

Again, the law was that was what a rural carrier was supposed to do. (City carriers didn't have to) Provide a full Post Office on wheels for the rural residents. She had scales in her Jeep and could take, weigh, and calculate postage for a package. And she did that more than a few times.

Again, at the time many of her fellow rural carriers would refuse to do that, lie and say they didn't have to.

Again, I don't know if the rules are still the same, but that's the way it used to be.

I just scanned the Postal Service web site. All those rural carrier services are still there, if I read it right. Another one is money orders, which I remember my mother doing now. Priority and Express Mail too, now.

If you're on a rural route, it's still "Post Office on wheels" service. That's the law. City carriers don't have to do this -- if you're in the city, it is go to the Post Office. But for rural customers, you get the post office on wheels.

I remember mail boxes used to have a little change box built in them. This was for paying for postage directly, without a stamp, or buying stamps.

I remember, and my mother did this many times per day. A rural customer would put a note in the box, "Need $X stamps", with payment. My mother would take the money and leave the requisite number of stamps. Some days, she might run out, but that rarely happened. If so, she would take the money, and leave a note, telling them she was sorry, and would have their stamps the next day.

They are still supposed to do that on rural routes.

Speaking of neither rain, nor sleet, etc, etc. I can remember that well. Brakes were quite a thing. My father and I became expert brake men. You wouldn't believe how quickly brakes wear out on mail vehicle.

I can remember a few times, as a kid and teenager, when my mother got stuck in the snow, the few rare snow storms we have. Rules and law was, the mail carrier must make a good faith attempt to deliver the mail, no matter what. My father and I did a lot to ensure my mother could make such a good faith attempt.

One time, her vehicle was pretty stuck, before daddy got her a 4-wheel drive Scout. So, what did they do. He drove her in our old pickup, weighted down with blocks in the back and chains. She didn't have much left on her route, and the rest of the mail fit in the pickup. He drove, she rode and put the mail in the boxes.

That was technically a violation of the rules. No one but an authorized employee of the postal service is supposed to deliver or handle the mail. But let's just say, such was overlooked, as the spirit of the law was to get the mail faithfully delivered. She handled and delivered it, he just drove her.
