The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

My first experience with Thomas Sowell's work was in college, and I suspected that he was chosen for his color and not his intellect.

Boy was I wrong.

Everything I have read by him has been thought provoking, rational, and based on the real world. In this age of "consensus" and group-think and newspeak, it is refreshing to return to a man who is not so enthralled by his own ideas that he rejects facts and experience that may be at odds with them.

If anyone can lift economics out of the miasma of politics and mushy-headed thinking, and into a discipline that values the Scientific method, It is Thomas Sowell.

The triumph of Thomas Sowell

At first he attended night classes at the historically black Howard University. There, his professors noted his remarkable intellect and capacity for hard work and helped him transfer to Harvard the next year. He thrived there intellectually and graduated at the age of twenty-eight magna cum laude.

But he was less enamored of the social atmosphere in Cambridge. Sowell noted that he “resented attempts by some thoughtless Harvardians to assimilate me, based on the assumption that the supreme honor they could bestow was to allow me to become like them.”

(Read the article...it's a review of a new biography of Sowell, and is filled with interesting little tidbits)

What fascinates me about Sowell's journey from Marxist to free-market conservative is that it was based entirely on reality. As his reality and perception of the world expanded, he changed to accommodate the new data, rather than rejecting it as so many supposed scholars do today. Just look at Global WarmingTM as an example of political expedience destroying rational analysis of the facts.

But as much of an important force he is in economics, Thomas Sowell may be even more valuable as an observer of hilariously irrational social elites, and their curious hold on the media and the popular narrative. His skewering of the conventional wisdom is always on target, and worthy of the great social observers of history.

Some of the biggest cases of mistaken identity are among intellectuals who have trouble remembering that they are not God.

14 I have found that Sowell's writings have aged better than Buckley's. Early Buckley was norm-shattering and provocative, but as he grew older and more respectable, his rodomontade vocabulary carried more heft than his ideas.

Sowell is worth reading and worth reflecting on at any point in his career.

Which is one of the indications that sven's comment is correct. Elites get to break the rules and wet their beaks because they are also generally effective and keep it in check.

Our elites have forgotten that, which is why they're now proceeding to ruin everything. It requires a light touch but their towering entitlement, arrogance (even hubris), contempt and stupidity have caused them to soak their beaks instead to the point where they'll be eating the seed grain and re-instituting slavery before long.

Then they will die, murdered in the tumult they caused. But not before everything blows up.

Back when my husband was getting his PhD, a fellow student turned away from academia and went into business. He got plenty of money from M&A but moved into outsourcing, saying it would improve the "environment" and that the lower prices would compensate Westerners for massive job loss. He was just greedy. Now at about 80, the camel is about to meet the eye of the needle and he's looking for a way out while keeping every cent for "generational wealth". I had no words of comfort.

80 This is a painfully stupid yet clever headline from the NYT:
Attacks on Jews Over Israel Are a Gift to the Right

First, the stupid part. Attacks on Jews aren't wrong. Aren't evil. Aren't an attempt to intimidate a minority out of their Constitutional rights. No...the problem with attacks on Jews is that they're are a "gift" to the right.

Now, the clever part.
If you read the article, the problem is that Progtard/Leftard/Communist/BLM/antiftard support gives the "Right" a talking point and means to engage and turn the Jewish vote.

However, for the casual headline reader - "Attacks on Jews Over Israel Are a Gift to the Right" can mean that those terrible attacks on Jews make the "Right" happy cuz of course they support attacks on Jews.

Thus, the wrongs of the Left become attached to the Right in the minds of the LowIQ flunkies of the Left.

Sad.

Something like this, yes. Which doesn't work in America (well, didn't). We actually had a pretty damn flat society. We had rich and poor, of course, and sometimes vast chasms between them. But the elites didn't get to play that particular card. They were unable to claim that they were inherently, morally superior because of their position. No one would buy that at any price and scale.

That's a problem if you're an aristocrat. What's the point if you can't lord it over the serfs? What good is it being rich when the poor are pretty rich, too? You have a giant house and fancy cars and fine furniture - but the proles have houses and cars and furniture, too. It varies only by degree. There's no point in any of this if your goal is to rule and command and possess at their expense.

This is exactly the attitude that brings about sumptuary laws.

82 The elites want money and don't give a fuck about anyone else.
The egotistical "elites" want to pull the ladder up behind them, abandoning an American Principle of wanting everyone else to become prosperous as well. To me, that's the dividing line between self-interest and greed.

They don't appear capable of putting themselves in someone else's position and don't stop to think how they'd feel if someone did the same thing to them.

No. What will make them happy - or so they think - is to turn us into modern serfs who are wholly dependent on them. They want us renting our homes from them, leasing our appliances from them, buying our food from them, even gaining a chunk (or all) of our monthly income from them (on average, anyway, in the lower classes).

They want us in thrall, and nothing short of that will satisfy them. They laid this out in basically plain language in their "Great Reset" plans and desires. Rulers have no use for free men. They want only subservient dependents who kowtow and kill their feet.

This statement says a lot. Western Civ' is great, but it seems to take a breaking of old systems (old wineskins, broken cisterns) to "progress" into something better. Our founders had experience with Kings and Popes running roughshod over the "free" people, and gave us an exceptional new system that restrained those that would be king.

Sowell's race (maybe) helped him perceive some of the Old blue blood system that tried to make him one of them, after he displayed his own competence. I don't know his specifics, but his clear mind seems to have emerged beyond the old school system restraints, to produce his own (academic) good fruit.

Krugman is just another example of what many here are saying. Back in the day, one could go from the penthouse to the shit-house, and the other way around, relatively quickly. That alone tends to sharpen the mind. That's a meritocracy. What we've got is unending bureaucracy.

Only thing that kept me sane was the inability, back in '90, to afford access to the schools I qualified for - taking an Engineering Technology degree instead - and working on-site with the electricians, fitters, millwrights, and such for the last thirty years. I am not joking in the slightest. I used to be really, really pissed that I couldn't go to the places that I was accepted to. Now ? Fuck, I dodged a bullet and didn't know it.

155 talk about the elites sparked a thought I had about the Entertainment biz, while reading Ace's post about "The Eternals" yesterday. It occurred to me that what the Entertainment biz is doing is analagus to what the Big 3 auto manufacturers did starting in the 70's and through the 80's. In the 50's and 60's, the Big 3 in Detroit put out beautiful designs, fantastic vehicles that everyone wanted, and they completely dominated world auto sales. Starting in the 70's, they began to believe that people would buy whatever they sold no matter what, just because they were so great, and it didn't matter if it looked like crap, ran like crap, and cost way too much. Now only Ford is left in something close to it's old form, and even GM is just a pale shadow of the company that used to dominate the world.

They didn't believe they could be replaced. But they were, and quite easily. It'll happen to the "entertainment" companies like Disney, Marvel, and others much much faster.

O/T, but this reminds me of an interesting linguistic generational marker. You can tell from one expression whether someone is (approximately) a Boomer or older, or not.

It's how an airplane that performs military fighter duties is called. Older folks tend to call them "Jet Fighters" and younger folks tend to call them "Fighter Jets."

What we're seeing is merely a new form of the old conflict between the tendency for power to eventually centralize, and the resistance by established institutions. Note that the resistance isn't necessarily wrong. Distributed power creates resiliency in a society, at the cost of efficiency. Centralized power creates efficiency and ability to handle complex tasks, but at the cost of fragility and corruption.

This is the difference in how one reacts to the statement "Man, that guy has it all!"

In Sowell's case - what used to be the American case - the response to that statement is "I want it all too. How do I get there for myself?"

In the modern case, the response to that statement is "I want it taken from him and given to me."

Many years ago, the Ivies or Seven Sisters wouldn't think of admitting a black student, no matter how well qualified. Those students went to HBCUs like Howard or Clark or Morehouse or Grambling, which were pretty good schools without the social cachet the Ivies had.

Now that the elite schools have siphoned off the best of the pool that would have otherwise attended HBCUs, the latter have been largely ruined without the Ivies gaining much.

I remember a story from long ago about a talented black student who matriculated at Columbia but was so patronized he transferred to Howard in disgust and was much happier.

214 Much like The Golden Path in Dune.

It's always a savior fantasy on the part of the author. Asimov thought his scientific and statistical background would save the world in a certain way, so he wrote a fantasy where that saves the universe. Frank Herbert thought his theories on politics would save the world, so he wrote a fantasy where that saves the universe.

The path that Paul rejects and Leto embraces doesn't so much save the world as spread genetic diversity the old fashioned way: by war and rapine.

Dune (the first and greatest) was just 16th century Italian politics put into a sci-fi setting. Everything after that is a muddle because Herbert was sort of a muddle, intellectually.

Why would a young man from the same small town move to Frozen Ice, North Dakota, or Hotter than Hell, Texas, for an oilfield roughneck job when he could stay home and keep his job fixing flats at the Texaco station?

Real puzzles, that's for sure.

imo that is the important distinction between "We are a capitalist nation" and "We are a nation founded on liberty".

When Liberty is a priority, we rein in monopolies and polluters and various "dangers" to society. We have obviously failed at that as Wall Street took control, so they could profit off slavery in China, along with ignoring all pollution law and even genocide.

Along the way WallStreet (or Goldman Sachs types at least) bought up DC ... congress and POTUS. I think Marvel knows perfectly well that its not going to do as well as they pretend... but are using it as a loss leader to introduce characters that they'll be moving into the Avengers to fill those holes until recasting inevitably occurs for the big names leaving.
