Elise Stefanik Defeats Chip Roy to Replace Liz Cheney as #3 in Republican Congressional Leadership

Via Suhil Kapur:

Stefanik - 134
Roy - 46
Foxx - 1
Jordan - 1
CMR - 1
Present - 9

Trump made his preference clear yesterday:

"Can't imagine Republican House Members would go with Chip Roy--he has not done a great job, and will probably be successfully primaried in his own district," Trump said in a press release. "I support Elise, by far, over Chip!"

So, why did Trump endorse the moderate/liberalish Stefanik over the conservative Chip Roy?

I actually have some original reporting. I am reliably informed that a big obstacle to replacing Liz Cheney the last time they had a vote on this was that no one stepped up to the plate and offered to run to replace her.

You can't beat something with nothing, so Cheney survived the first vote to expel her partly due to simple lack of anyone willing to take the job from her.

Stefanik earned respect for having offered herself up as a replacement for Cheney this time, and in so doing, made it much easier to oust Cheney.

⁨Trump had particular reason to favor Stefanik over Roy because on January 6th, when some voted to object to the electoral college count and some didn't, Stefanik was one of those objecting, and Roy was one of those opposed to the motion to object.

Chip Roy was better on the issues, if you're a conservative. However, he is regarded as being inflexible on his ideology. Which is good in a Congressman, but not necessarily good in a congressional leader, who has to deliver and enforce the consensus caucus opinion, regardless of his personal opinion.

Stefanik is also seen as better at fundraising for other congressmen.

I'm also told that Trump decided to more forcefully endorse Stefanik -- and call Roy weak -- because allies of Roy were talking up the idea that Trump might endorse him over Stefanik. Trump put an end to that chatter.

Despite Stefanik being generally more moderate than Roy, she has shown she can take positions which are extremely unpopular -- toxic even -- to our Ruling Class. Most of the "toxic" positions she's taken have been in support of Trump or his agenda, but that doesn't mean she can't take them in other cases.

She might not be as bad a choice, as far as conservative issues, as people fear. Certainly she has demonstrated repeatedly that she has the one trait that is absolutely necessary in a leader -- the balls to tell the Ruling Class Establishment to go fuck itself blind.

I rate this as glass half full.

Honestly, looking at both of their bios, I'd support Stefanick simply because she doesn't seem quite so much like the smarmy climber as Roy. Both have spent much of their adult lives in politics, but Stefanik at least comes from a background with the family business, whereas Roy seems to have gone the traditional corporatecon route of big business -> law school -> box checking government jobs.

That, combined with his response to Jan 6, makes me wary.

I'm fine with it. Cheney didn't do any fundraising of note for her colleagues, and she baled on Trump at the worst possible times, so I don't care if we might align philosophically. This is Trump's party, as far as I'm concerned.

If Stefanik does what the base wants the GOP to do, I don't care if she's got a painting of Bernie Sanders in her dining room. She's a politician - follow the will of the people you serve, or get out.

The Arkansas Trucking Association on Friday estimated the closure would cost the trucking industry at least $2.4 million a day because of the longer routes to cross the river. The group used data provided by the American Transportation Research Institute.

Arkansas Trucking Association President Shannon Newton said the trip on the I-40 bridge between the two states averaged eight minutes. Since the I-40 bridge closure, trips on the I-55 bridge being used as the closest alternate route have averaged 84 minutes.

"Even if you're looking at 6-8 weeks, that's an incredible expenditure that the industry can't simply absorb," Newton said.

It seems like a problem with these firebrands is that their fundraising efforts are mainly directed at themselves.

If Gaetz and MTG were to get primary opponents over the finish line in other districts and then help them win general elections more than the RCCC, they'd build a real caucus within Congress. That's hard to do, especially when the RCCC will say, "Hey! You won the primary! Here's $3 million!"

I get it. Abandoning the GOP means no party at all, at least for a while and it can be tiresome to hear that drumbeat. My problem, though, is that the GOP is extremely predictable in that they fail outright when they don't lie and prevaricate about trying. Is the Stefanik move a good one? Who knows. They have about nine months, maybe a year, to nut up big time. I am not enthusiastic about the GOP and have largely written them off, but I am more than open to being convinced by actual action.

Cheney was a distraction to the leadership team in terms of fundraising, candidate recruitment, and messaging. The House team did not need the inevitable questions that Roy would have engendered as part of the leadership role is to support the caucus, not hot takes about how pure one's principles are.

I guarantee that media types would have flocked to get Roy on record as dissing Trump and manufactured stories if necessary. With all the current leadership expressing support for Trump, that media gotcha becomes sterile over a long time instead of dissension in the ranks. This also deprives the NT'ers in the media from being able to discuss the fissures among leaders which hurts fundraising and recruiting candidates.

So yeah, the GOP is now in the spot of having blown good will and trust and has to actually earn it back, not just make a few moves (that they had to be forced into making after not doing like with Liz) to show it. If you want to be a battered spouse and all "See, they said they are changing, and this time they really mean it!" you can. I find it really hard to believe that the rhetoric of a party in the minority now has much to do with the governing philosophy of that same part in the majority, especially when they're Republicans.

We got all the awesome ACA repeal votes when they were out of power. We believed in Paul Ryan.

372 Last but not least, voting record analysis is worthless unless you know the composition of the district (safe seat or not), and whether the vote is actually meaningful which in the House, few votes are if you are in the minority. What is more important if you want to get a majority is messaging discipline, fundraising, and candidate recruitment. A person in a seat that is less safe often has to take tough votes to support the leadership and becomes a target for the other party to take out. They demonstrate more courage than the person on the backbench in a safe seat. Roy has not demonstrated that courage yet and perhaps never will; Stefanik for better or worse, has in her support of Trump and in her committee questioning which was more in line with what the caucus wanted than disappearing which would have helped her more in NY politics.

Politics in a legislature is always the art of the possible, not the perfect. You want to change the policy, figure out a way to sell better policies that are effective that split the Dems like school vouchers, etc. and avoid those that split your own caucus.

And most of the horde currently commenting is not falling into that category, and only doing so because that is essentially the topic at hand in this post. "Is this good she is the replacement? This point is one that I get, and it is *the* difference between the Democrats and Republicans.

Look at Trump's appointments (the ones the GOP permitted, anyway). There was little crossover on most of them. Fairly few broke into the mid-60s votes to confirm and only one or two broke 70 votes.

Compare that to Biden's. He is routinely slotting in people with confirmation votes in the 70s or better. Garland is a terrific example of this. He's a monster and everyone knows it and half the caucus voted to confirm him while McConnell had to furiously whip votes to get Kavanaugh seated while he held the majority.

The Democrats are at war and have been my entire life. The Republicans just aren't fighting.

421 Republican establishment let Goldwater hang out to dry in '64. Nixon, who was heavily influenced by FDR as a youth, becomes President, only to establish the Clean Air Act, the EPA, disengage the dollar from gold, and establish wage and price controls. Oh, and open relations with China. Ford was an establishment Republican, but he did what he could to salvage our reputation. Oh, and actively put down the nascent Reagan revolution. Ronaldus Maximus - well, 'nuff said, but he did get snookered by Tip O'Neil on immigration. Oh, and he let in the Bushes, who hated everything Reagan did even though HW rode his coattails. The base saw what was happening under Clinton, then under W, and decided to try to reform the party from the bottom-up, with the TEA Party. We know what happened there. Took our money, and our energy, and retook the House and Senate, only to utterly fold when it counted. SCOTUS - well, we know the story there as well. The base strikes back, yet again, with Trump. Oh, and gives him the House and Senate as well, to finally get it done. Finally.

Well, here we are. I can see why one can be a little jaded. And a little peeved.

Anger at them for continuing the footsy-playing, the go along to get along, the Biden confirmations, the very tepid defense of anything Trump, the complete silence on the Democrats' use of gov't agencies to target their political enemies, as well as their silence on big tech censorship. Now normally you'd expect that Hamas et al (there are other outfits involved here) would have extensive observation capabilities, and be able to easily determine if IDF ground forces were entering in the north and east - so they couldn't be spoofed this way into heading to their "Metro" (underground tunnels and facilities). heads up - you do NOT want the kind that is for surface application. That is dissolved in like oil, so it sticks and stays on. The oil is not meant to be ingested ever. You can use the apple flavored paste. Or you can use the injectable form not by injecting - you drink it. One cc or one ml they are the same think, per 110 pounds. So if you are 220 you get 2ml.

500 Roy is my rep. He is a "good" conservative in principle, but he showed his soft white belly when it counted. Had every ostensibly conservative rep and senator raised bloody hell when this obvious coup occurred we might have had a chance. Now with their consent, if not their active participation, we who know and are willing state the this election was a fraud are being actively, de-platformed and made pariahs.

That is why I will support a primary challenge against Chip Roy, "good " conservative.

502 1) See Conservative Tree House for their coverage of Stefanik. She unearthed major IC shenanigans early in Trump's term.2) Stefanik was the power behind the recruitment of the GOP class of 2020. They won 21 of 21.3) Stefanik ran a PAC dedicated to financially supporting new GOP congressional candidates.
4) Stefanik's district is the home of the 10th Mountain Division. She knows something about the military.

503 Stefanik is young, connects very well with voters and enthusiastically supports Republican candidates, as she has since first being elected to Congress. She will be a big plus for the Republican Party. Donald Trump's support for her is clearly based on these facts.

504 As significant a factor as any is the idea that the vast majority of Republicans and center/right voters won't tolerate a piggish eternal foreign war facilitator that votes to impeach the president of her own party based on bogus partisan nonsense.

Let Liz the Leper enjoy her guest slots on MSDNC and XiNN if they still decide she's worth it. I'm perfectly good with the Democrat base and their appendages being linked to someone they called a war criminal not so long ago.

506 When it came nut cutting time --ie who would support the FNM false 1/6 putsch inspired by Trump BS--Stefanik had nuts. Roy did not. Fcuk Roy et al.
