The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“It would worry me if we were advocating we could hug all of our friends every time we meet them,” Catherine Noakes, a specialist in airborne infections at the University of Leeds

Quote II

Never forget the three powerful resources you always have available to you: love, prayer, and forgiveness. H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Quote III

I'm a Star Bucks barista. Unidentified Star Bucks Barista

Quote IV

“Five little baby girls, all by themselves, hungry crying. One didn’t have any clothes on. Immediately, I called border patrol but they’re snowed under, they don’t have any help either.” Texas Rancher Jimmy Hobbs

Quote V

"While we expect companies to secure their infrastructure, these continued breaches only reinforce the need for a cohesive and cooperative partnership between the government and private companies that operate our nation’s critical infrastructure.” Sen. Mark Warner, who chairs the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (D-VA)

Quote VI

"Remaining silent, and ignoring the lie, emboldens the liar. I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy." Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY)

If the Boss was a kid: He would still be stuck with Kaboom or a reasonable facsimile.

The day we all feared has arrived. The monsters of the cereal aisle, who had been content menacing the breakfasts of children for decades, have finally realized they are stronger together. Count Chocula, Boo Berry, Frankenberry, Frute Brute, and Yummy Mummy have formed the Monster Cereal Avengers and god help us all.

The new General Mills cereal, aptly if unsurprisingly called Monster Mash, has been created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the line of monster-centric cereals, which began with Count Chocula and Frankenberry back in 1971. While the company is being tight-lipped about the product—understandable, since it’s the one who put these monsters in touch with each other, and will be responsible for all who die at the monsters’ hands—the cereal packaging describes the contents as “Artificially Berry Flavored Frosted Cereal With Monster Marshmallows.”

There are a number of reasons why the Republican Party is known as the "Stupid Party". Case in point, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA).

Why is a Republican Stupid senator from Louisiana defending the House of Representative from Wyoming Liz Cheney? With all due respect Senator, you have no business chiming in about House business.

Cassidy’s declaration follows the Louisiana Republican arguing in a Sunday interview with NBC’s Meet the Press that if the GOP wants to win in 2022 and 2024, the party must agree with Cheney’s view that former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden.

“If you look at polls, there’s a whole group of folks that agree with Liz Cheney. And so, for us to win in 2022 and 2024, we need everybody. We need those who feel as Liz, those who feel as Lindsey. Ultimately it’s about the policies. You see that Cheney, Cassidy, support those policies. Those policies are a ticket to victory. Those policies bring us back in 2022,” Cassidy told host Chuck Todd.

You want us to vote Republican? You should have told Ms. Cheney not to vote to impeach President Trump.

You're nothing but self serving, pocket lining, out of touch politician. Go fuck yourself. And while you're at it go hang with OJ.

The results of the Armed Forces social experimenting are in. Not surprising is that there is a difference between males and females. Go figure.

More than seven months after the official launch of the Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, nearly half of female soldiers are still falling short, with enlisted women struggling the most, Military.com has learned. The data again raises questions about whether the Army's attempt to create a fitter force is creating more barriers to success for women.

Internal Army figures from April show 44% of women failed the ACFT, compared to 7% of men since Oct. 1. "Female soldiers continue to lag male soldier scores in all events," according to a United States Army Forces Command briefing obtained by Military.com.

Let me warn you: Please be seated when you read this. The New York Times calls Bull Shit on the CDC and its handling of the Kung Flu.

NYT Calls Out CDC Over Disingenuous COVID Guidance

With Trump out of office and Biden now taking credit for all pandemic-related progress, several new studies - some of them picked up by MSM outlets, have significantly dialed back the fear (asymptomatic spread is less common than previously thought, surfaces are actually pretty safe, etc.).

Now, the New York Times of all outlets is calling out the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for a bullshit claim that "less than 10 percent" of COVID-19 transmission happens outdoors.

In reality, it's more like 1% or less, and the Times nails them on it.

"...the number is almost certainly misleading," writes David Leonhardt. "Saying that less than 10 percent of Covid transmission occurs outdoors is akin to saying that sharks attack fewer than 20,000 swimmers a year. (The actual worldwide number is around 150.) It’s both true and deceiving."

It appears to be based partly on a misclassification of some Covid transmission that actually took place in enclosed spaces (as I explain below). An even bigger issue is the extreme caution of C.D.C. officials, who picked a benchmark — 10 percent — so high that nobody could reasonably dispute it.

That benchmark “seems to be a huge exaggeration,” as Dr. Muge Cevik, a virologist at the University of St. Andrews, said. In truth, the share of transmission that has occurred outdoors seems to be below 1 percent and may be below 0.1 percent, multiple epidemiologists told me. The rare outdoor transmission that has happened almost all seems to have involved crowded places or close conversation. -NYT

Pipelines are bad. Pipelines are good after all.

Apparently it’s a state of emergency in 17 states because there was a ransomware cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline.

Biden’s U.S. Department of Transportation issued the regional emergency declaration according to The Hill.

Excuse me if I chuckle a bit just a bit about the Democrats facing their own planned reality.

I suspect AOC is orgasaming at the sight of this.

And here I thought I was a homebody.

I have lived in the Teifi valley, in west Wales, all my life: 72 years. I’m a farmer and look after 71 sheep. My boyhood was spent helping my family on the farm. I have never wanted to run away from it, even as a young lad. This valley is cut in the shape of my heart. I once visited a farm in England, about 30 years ago; that was the only time I left Wales.

Many of the friends I grew up with left to find work in the big cities. As a young man, I was offered a job in Scotland on the oil rigs, but I could never leave. My heart belongs here with the birds and the trees. I knew, if I left, I’d be thinking about my valley the whole time, so what would be the point? All I want is right here.

I have a routine, just like nature. That extends to what I eat. I’ve had the same supper for 10 years, even on Christmas Day: two pieces of fish, one big onion, an egg, baked beans and a few biscuits at the end. For lunch I have a pear, an orange and four sandwiches with paste. But I allow myself a bit more variety; I’ll sometimes have soup if it’s cold.

Talk about skeletons in your closet. And here I thought cleaning out my parents home was bad.

Family members made a grisly discovery over the weekend when they discovered human skeletal remains while they were cleaning out their father’s residence after he passed away earlier this year.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 8, in Casco, Maine -- approximately 30 miles north of Portland -- when the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 from an individual at 3:26 p.m. saying that they found skeletal remains in an outbuilding while they were clearing out their father’s home, the Department of Public Safety of the Maine State Police said in a press release.

It would have been cheaper to mail Mom a card. Genius Award Winners.

MAY 10--The most shocking Mother’s Day gift this year was the handiwork of a Wisconsin man, records show.

During a disturbance yesterday afternoon, a 43-year-old woman was tased in the neck by her son, who was upset “because he could not find his phone,” according to police.

Investigators say that Andrew Peterson, 22, tased his mother in the victim’s home in Lone Rock, a village about 45 miles west of Madison. After the tasing, Peterson left the residence with his 20-year-old girlfriend and the couple’s young child.

Police subsequently located Peterson, who reportedly “admitted to using an electronic weapon...on his mother on Mother’s Day.” Peterson’s girlfriend, Colleen Parker, was also arrested for allegedly punching Peterson’s mother in the face during a confrontation Thursday.

Nice family, eh?

37 This documentary on the real criminals behind the opioid crisis is incredible.

Basically big Pharma pays the FDA to approve their drug and even hires the FDA approvers later on with cushy salaries.

If the DEA starts putting pressure on big Pharma, the drug companies use their leverage on congressmen (campaign cash) to get laws changed so they can easily peddle the opioids without government trouble.

Chris Dodd personally shut down an investigation into Purdue Pharma in his own state. Dodd was paid ridiculous amounts of money for that.

Now that states are cracking down on pill farm doctors, the cartels are shipping synthetic opioids across the border (fentanyl) either from China or homemade.

And Biden is opening the border wide for them.

It's great - I make it a lot b/c it's easy to drop the dairy/tree nuts (which I can't have), and still have plenty of flavor.

I also make Asian cuisines a lot for the same reason (although my youngest kid still says I can't quite make Indian "butter" chicken as well as the restaurant - but having to make do with vegan butter and Asian coconut milk is limiting to how much fatty mouth feel you can get)...it might also be b/c I add a ton of roasted veg to mine to make it a one pot meal, and he is still on the anti-veg train (although he's finally willing to hop on every now and then)...

243 Around here the biggest Nazis about mask wearing are at a national chain that rhymes with FrostCo.

My idea is to put together a "great unmasking" at their store. I think you'd need 30 or 40 people to form a kind of flash mob. Everyone trickles into the store on a Saturday, wearing masks, about 15 or 20 minutes before noon -- enough time to fill your cart with all your weekly and monthly groceries. Real stuff you intend to buy, and enough of it that your cart is quite full by noon.

Then right at 12:00, everyone gathers in an aisle, removes their masks all at the same time, and then returns to shopping. If an employee tells you to put your mask on say that you'll leave instead, and walk directly toward the door, leaving your loaded cart behind. They would quickly have traffic jams with abandoned carts filled to the brim with product that they will have to restock to the shelves.

Pretty quickly I think they would stop telling people to comply, and would tell you instead to just finish your shopping and then leave the store -- which is exactly what you wanted to do in the first place. And at that moment, they would have lost their ability to mandate masks.

Thoughts?

Yes. I rarely make French, b/c you do lose a lot there without dairy...although my teen girls have perfected a dairy free savory soufflé - of course, it involves a lot of bacon, but it also has green things in it, and no sauce, so for French, my kids probably found the recipe in their diet recipe books (they found it, I didn't - I don't make soufflés b/c they are a pita, but my kids like being better cooks than Food Network contestants).

But we're licensed to foster in Iowa, not a border state, and these kids take forever to be processed or are released to "relatives," who are usually no better than their idiotic parents.

He's going to play for Jacksonville as a TE for his college coach, Urban Meyer, who just became the head coach there. Instead of playing baseball the last 5 years Tebow shoulda been playing TE. He could have made any team playing that position but the 2011 season of miraculous finishes when he helmed the Broncos went to his head.

He also married a South African beauty queen, unlike KrapperDick, whose mind was captured by an ugly commie woman. Which is why Nike is willing to Colon K a yuge amount of money as a spokesasshole.

350 I know conventional holds that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, but I really think a chain is only as strong as the incompetent person you task with chaining things up.

It could be that America's raw materials, its citizens, are as strong and capable as they ever were, but the dumb f*ckers we have placed in charge of educating and governing them are incompetent, insolent, self-aggrandizing assholes that refuse to follow tried and tests methodology because they either believe themselves more intelligent and enlightened than the sum-total of all human knowledge that came before them or they are intentionally sabotaging institutions and individuals because they know to support those institutions and individuals would leave them in their meaningless positions while others excell.

353 My solar panels don't give off any smug. Our place is off-grid, so they are a necessity. We get our smug from the high-speed fiberoptic internet access that Obama gave to modernize the rural hinterlands. The generator runs on LP and is used to augment the solar electrical production. Right-sizing the production (panels) and the storage (batteries) for the comforts of home is the challenge.

Eh... it's a tradeoff.

The seats are way, way better on Amtrak, and you can get up and walk around any time you damned well please, and you can see the scenery (if there's scenery). So better than airlines in that respect.

As far as driving goes, you don't have to drive when you're on Amtrak. You can read, work on your computer, sleep, whatever. So better than driving in that respect.

The downsides are that it's slower than flying, and you can't make side trips as you can with driving.

Bedliner paint is the killer app for painting frame rails when they're exposed, such as you've got there. Nah, not free, but as close to bombproof as you'll find in a can. Goes well on spring shackles, sway bars, panhard rods, etc. Nothing resists road salt quite so well. Oh, yeah. Hoist the bodywork off the frame, and paint the underside of the floor-pans and everything else you can reach with it, too. Highly effective.

Fuck Skull and Bones. I ran 2 miles in 12:34 (needed 12:36 to max), about 87 situps (1 or 2 over the max), and 99 fucking pushups -- 19 over the standard max. Three hundred twenty-two, if it makes you feel better. (My only competitor did a couple more situps than I did, and was considerably faster, but you got 1 extra point every 6 seconds faster you ran and since he exactly maxed out his pushups (80), my cushion was unbeatable. The 2 mile run was last, and so long as I maxed it out (you had to max all 3 events to qualify for >300), I was going to win. Couple of years later, in my MAANG unit, I did 100 pushups. My battalion ops NCO counted mine and he did not let officers skate. I earned every fucking one of those 100.

Electric current would be like that if charge carriers were massive. Electrons have negligible mass. If say, protons were the charge carriers, you would indeed get inertial effects in a wire carrying current. Back in school, for fun, we looked at what that would be like.

What is interesting is there you'd have to add the inertial effects as well as electrical parameters to the equations to get circuit behavior.

Yeah water hammer, or more properly fluid hammer is a big deal in big ass pipes with YUGE flow momentum.

When you close a valve (or open a valve) transient pressure changes bounce back and forth along the end of the pipe. This transient analysis is very critical to understand the limits and dangers of the system. Expansion tanks, surge tanks, and the like are used to compensate.

Surge tanks on big-ass pipes like penstock feeding huge water turbines are huge themselves. Basically, they are tall towers on the end of the pipe. A pressure surge caused by a change in flow is damped by water just flowing up the tower, with gravity providing head pressure.

Imagine a long pipe with a constant flow. You close a valve at the end. That fluid now has to stop on a dime. It slams into the closed valve causing a pressure spike. This pressure spike becomes a wave that travels back up the pipe at the speed of sound of the medium inside. That pressure wave bounces back and forth the length of the pipe, damping out after a few cycles.

521 > Electric current would be like that if charge carriers were massive.

You do get reactance with inductors and capacitors, which, though not mass-based, is similar in some ways (large inrush current until the capacitors charge up, voltage spikes from inductors when the current is cut and the magnetic field collapses, etc.).

Let's see.... specific gravity of gasoline is about 0.75, so about 750 kg/m^3.

A 200 km 1 meter diameter pipe has a volume of about 157,000 m^3, giving a mass of about 118 million kg. Let's say it's moving at 10 mph/16 km/h. So about 4 m/s. Kinetic energy would be 1/2 * 118x10^6 * 4^2 = about 1 gigajoule.

More than enough to cause Very Bad Things to happen if it came to a sudden stop.

538 >> You do get reactance with inductors and capacitors, which, though not mass-based, is similar in some ways

Yes, inductance is similar to mass/inertia, and capacitance is similar to an (inverse) spring constant. See the oscillator equations for an LC circuit vs a mass spring system. Same equations, just one with voltage and current, and the other with speed and force, which becomes flow and pressure in fluid flow systems.

545 >> More than enough to cause Very Bad Things to happen if it came to a sudden stop.

If interested, look up some of the simple fluid hammer equations. The full analysis leads to an set of partial differential equations that look exactly the transmission line equations. With the latter, your variable are v(x, t), and i(x, t). voltage and current over the length of the line with time.

For the fluid in the pipe, you have p(x,t) taking the role of voltage, and q(x, t) which can be either velocity or flow.

The bulk modulus and density play the roles of inductance per length and capacitance per length. Wave speed follows. Pipe friction enters into as well, and that can't be neglected, so it looks like a lossy transmission line.

There's something I want to say to those who think this country is doomed--the bedrock is still there, nothing has magically disappeared, all that made us exceptional yet exists. Problem is that the greatness has been obscured by the filth the prog left smeared on it. If you look back through our past you'll find we've met and prevailed over situations even more serious than the current mess. Sort of a string of unbroken successes, if you will. Because of who and what we are, I have an unbreakable faith this will be no exception.

I would not be shocked if the threatened tactic you mentioned - a break-away GOP faction - actually happened. I'd still be surprised. Running on essentially an implicitly anti-Trump, pro-CoC, pro-GOPe breakaway platform would be dicey for all but established popular incumbents with very strong personal inertial holds on their seats - not many of those.

Some Senate races might be vulnerable to such sabotage.

Given the astounding behavior of most Beltway GOP, the lengths they went to get rid of Trump, nothing can be ruled out. The sane, intelligent, responsible, informed citizens of the country may never have faced such long odds. And mostly just to get policies that are widely, to extremely, popular, enacted.

LOL what I've been waiting for - the call from those who abandoned our party's nominee to hold our nose and support their RINO for the good of the party. Like 2016 and NeverTrump never happened. LOL GFY

596 JT, rode my bike yesterday for 1st ride!

(Not counting Monday when I rode it home the 3 blocks from the bike shop)

It's been a lot of years since I've ridden-maybe 12? But I did just over 10 miles. Hills and straight. Felt great!

599 There are quite a few nice bike trails around here. And I live in a small town, so easy to ride pretty much anywhere.

my Varsity was older than that: i had a "Le Tour" of about that vintage, at least until some asshoe stole it. the "Le Tour II" was a POS in comparison, but it got eaten by wolves when i was away for college.

then there was the one that got it's frame bent when it, and i, were t-boned by a car, resulting my my first concussion. so much for me having the right of way...

you have to understand that i am a fugitive from the law of averages: i already had my forever day 32 years ago, on my birfday, riding in a CA ARNG Huey, holding a trash bag full of urine samples. (long story) and that's just one of them.

611 Skip, those contractors did not leave us an easy bridge to the other end of our store. The back room (and coolers) can only be accessed through an outside employee door. Which means customers cant get to them! UNTIL FRIDAY! Then, next Monday they do the POS end of store.

Serious clusterf**k

Guess what I get to do quickly this morning? Move cases to behind the counter so my customers can at least have an option to purchase their beverages.

Pretty much everything else is inaccessible save for tobacco products.

only because i didn't actually die...

what's that line from a Terminator movie? (best part is: it really happened) spent the night in a Palm Springs hotel as a guest of the chopper pilot, as my broke ass couldn't buy a room, and, the next morning, no windstorm at all, and we flew back to Los Al w/o issues, after dropping off the prison guard reaction team in Chino. haven't been on a chopper since.

615 In fairness, if a propane tank senses a cigarette nearby, it won't explode. They are designed to be near open flame.
