+++++ Over 100, so I am going to recall this from my post on the morning report. In Pixy's thread (the tech news) today, he or she has a link out to what might be the most important thing I've read in a year, and the scariest thing I've read in several years. It is an academic paper written by MIT researchers on the topic of public (amateur) science and data visualization work. I am still kind of shell-shocked from reading it, and I have only had time to skim through it on a quick first pass. Please, I implore you, go read it. Download the PDF and put it in your queue to read. It is absolutely terrifying, and they're telegraphing what's going to come next. It's not going to be more data, it's going to be less. They're not going to publish evidence, they're going to publish conclusions. They're actively calling for restricting inputs and publishing correct conclusions while suppressing data and they're doing so in stark, black-and-white terms that leave no room to maneuver. It's absolutely horrifying. While previous literature in visualization and science communication has emphasized the need for data and media literacy as a way to combat misinformation [43, 47, 89], this study finds that anti-mask groups practice a form of data literacy in spades. Within this constituency, unorthodox viewpoints do not result from a deficiency of data literacy; sophisticated practices of data literacy are a means of consolidating and promulgating views that fly in the face of scientific orthodoxy. This is mind-blowing. The problem isn't illiteracy, it's people drawing different conclusions from the same data - conclusions that are opposed to their conclusions... I view this MIT paper as something of a progression that I first saw in the soft sciences (history) when I was in college, courtesy of a professor of German history. She was discussing a binary set of works. They were "Ordinary Men" by Christopher Browning and "Hitler's Willing Executioners" by Daniel Goldhagen.
These two books deal with the same subject (the subversion of German forces under Nazi rule to slaughter vilified groups). They use largely the same primary source material. Both authors, however, draw essentially opposite conclusions. Browning argues that there is nothing special about the Germans. Goldhagen argues that the Germans were particularly susceptible to these developments and willing, even eager to adjust to the new normal of Nazi Germany. Goldhagen's book is a response to Browning's book, and came later. Goldhagen disagreed with Browning's conclusions, went to mostly the same source material and drew different conclusions based on the same evidence. This is actually good, and how the process is supposed to work. This professor was anti-Goldhagen and was furious that he used the same bibliography to present a countering view. This was a settled matter. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 11, 2021 09:19 AM (Jsjd7) 283

Indeed, anti-maskers often reveal themselves to be more sophisticated in their understanding of how scientific knowledge is socially constructed than their ideological adversaries, who espouse naive realism about the "objective" truth of public health data. Quantitative data is culturally and historically situated; the manner in which it is collected, analyzed, and interpreted reflects a deeper narrative that is bolstered by the collective effervescence found within social media communities. Put differently, there is no such thing as dispassionate or objective data analysis. Instead, there are stories: stories shaped by cultural logics, animated by personal experience, and entrenched by collective action. This story is about how a public health crisis - refracted through seemingly objective numbers and data visualizations - is part of a broader battleground about scientific epistemology and democracy in modern American life.

Goldhagen is best known for his demonstration that the abuse of Jews and others in Nazi Germany was well known to most Germans. Later work showed the extent to which "ordinary" Germans had their own slave labor as house or farm servants. The research that came later not only confirmed Goldhagen's initial findings, but showed that he had tremendously underestimated the number of Germans who were assigned slave labor.
Posted by: Miklos at May 11, 2021 09:26 AM (QzkSJ) ++++ That's sort of beside the point. The issue I am driving at here isn't whether Goldhagen was right or wrong, but the *reaction* to Goldhagen using equivalent source material to draw different conclusions. This just isn't done against the current of academic preferences. My professor's actual unbridled rage at Goldhagen for having the temerity to question an issue that was appropriately and adequately settled really stood out to me. It is an attitude that is insanely dangerous and I recognized it as such, though I didn't have the ability to fully synthesize the thought at that point (to my lasting chagrin - I lament not knowing how to call her on it). That insanity is now becoming the norm everywhere. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 11, 2021 09:29 AM (Jsjd7) 327

As David Buckingham ... has noted, calls for increased literacy have often become a form of wrong-headed solutionism that posits education as the fix to all media-related problems. danah boyd ... has documented, too, that calling for increased media literacy can often backfire: the instruction to "question more" can lead to a weaponization of critical thinking and increased distrust of media and government institutions. She argues that calls for media literacy can often frame problems like fake news as ones of personal responsibility rather than a crisis of collective action. Shut up, prole. Don't worry about "literacy" or "critical thinking." Don't question, accept. To resist, obey. Who are you to question the establishment? What is one man in the context of the collective? Anti-Corona panic posters understand the data better and create better visualizations then their opponents. But since their superior data analysis is used to defend wrong think - namely that the government overreacted to COVID - they are a threat to the public. This is indeed amazing. Traditionally the way science worked is that theories are put to the test..and if found to be wrong, as the COVID panic chorus was shown to be - those theories get discarded no matter how much nominal experts want them to be true. Like data feminists, anti-mask groups similarly identify problems of political power within datasets that are released (or otherwise withheld) by the US government. Indeed, they contend that the way COVID data is currently being collected is non-neutral, and they seek liberation from what they see as an increasingly authoritarian state that weaponizes science to exacerbate persistent and asymmetric power relations. This paper shows that more critical approaches to visualization are necessary, and that the frameworks used by these researchers (e.g., critical race theory, gender analysis, and social studies of science) are crucial to disentangling how antimask groups mobilize visualizations politically to achieve powerful and often horrifying ends.
Emphasis mine. You see that? The problem is unsolvable by their own standards - provide data, withhold data, it doesn't matter. They are simply and bluntly calling for an *absence* of data in public discourse, leaving only conclusions handed down to avoid "powerful and horrifying ends" that oppose their orthodoxy. I could by 5-6 junkyard LS motors and have them ready to roll for the price of a single VW motor.. Which was my point... they are everywhere, and being a staple in fleet vehicles for a couple decades parts are cheap and plentiful. Posted by: Inogame at May 11, 2021 10:00 AM (53oGX) 485
427 I've been looking at long term food storage supplies. Anyone have
suggestions. So far Emergency Essentials seems to have the best costs and ratings. talk to your local mormons. we've been obsessed with this issue for ages and have infrastructure to make food storage. i'm pretty certain that the church-run food storage stores are willing to sell to heathen non-mormons (a heathen non-mormon is just a mormon waiting to happen, you see). That's sort of beside the point. The issue I am driving at here
isn't whether Goldhagen was right or wrong, but the *reaction* to Goldhagen using equivalent source material to draw different conclusions. That insanity is now becoming the norm everywhere.Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 11, 2021 09:29 AM (Jsjd7) Hmm . . . thesis, antithesis, . . . . he argued that Germans had a genetic predisposition to kill Jews.
- That's an exaggeration. His argument was that German culture, even prior to Hitler, was "eliminationist"; i.e., that little to no thought was given to assimilation or coexistence. The pre-final solutions included conversion, emigration etc. but always that we will get rid of them. There was no suggestion that Germans had an evil gene. (That exists only in Clintons.) Pertinent to the SCIENCE discussion on this thread, Rand Paul was just grilling Fauci on NAIAD funding research in the Wuhan lab. You tend to forget that Rand Paul is a doctor. Saint Fauci was parsing his words that gain-of-function research on the SARS virus was not funded by NAIAD in Wuhan, but Paul was noting that a spike protein was being put into a virus, and it's just semantics to not call that gain-of-function. I don't know how to judge who's right there, but it's good to get this out in the open.
