Pro tip: put the teleprompter close to the camera, so at least kinda looks like he's looking at the camera. Putting the teleprompter at waist level makes it obvious he's reading.

Plus, compare the first clip with the second. In the second he has to speak extemporaneously, and he's hopeless.

As I said the media only calling him doctor and his status as a bureaucrat exposes how worthless he is. If he had anything else like "top of his class" they would talk it up. Even Ben Carson would get acknowledged by them as a brilliant surgeon. Fauci has the perfect role for himself. An administrator at a post people think you need to be a doctor for. If he actually had to practice medicine, he wouldn't be.

I laugh at the libs who love it.

So empowering. So strong. So brave. Etc.

What is Wakanda? It's an absolute monarchy with an impervious border, no immigration, no dissent, full control and feats of strength (fight to the death) to resolve political disagreements and causes changes in the ruling class.

It's basically an atavistic hermit kingdom with a God-King.

ABout what one would expect from a BLM activist-turned-Congresswoman.

Like Michelle Obama, you hear these stories and wonder: has it ever occurred to them that this might happen to white women? Like, do you seriously think when a white woman goes to the doctor she is automatically taken seriously and attentively ever dang time, by every dang doctor?! How about: you had a crappy or distracted doctor?

I know that as an activist, reality does not matter, race is every -- the only -- angle through which any issue is driven. But still. Trust us, white skin holds no magical power such as that. We've all had at least one crappy doctor, one bad hospital experience.

That one drives me wild. When was Africa colonized? Starting in 1870. 1870! What was the holdup on creating this cross-cultural paradise in the previous N millennia?

When was Africa de-colonized? Starting in 1960. The entire history of colonization was just a bit more than a human lifetime.

Attributing Africa's backwardness and current problems to colonization is outrageous. Colonization was a blink of the eye in historical terms, but a convenient excuse for lousy performance before and after it.

I agree to an extent. Whether the virus, which is slightly worse than the flu, was accidentally or intentionally released is the only question I have. There is NO doubt the usual suspects were ready to roll the first time a new virus emerged so they could get their Global Warming dreams through the back door.

We need to bang them about the head about vaccinating illegals prior to release into the country. It would be awesome to watch Psaki's face if (I know) she were asked this question. Obviously, even if they believe the vaccine is effective, they do not want word out that illegals will be forcibly vaccinated because it might slow the Great Replacement.

294 That one drives me wild. When was Africa colonized? Starting in 1870. 1870!
Well, there were several discrete waves of conquest. The Portuguese started in the 1400s. They set up small trading posts to acquire slaves from the locals. In some places they formally took over control of significant tracts of land by playing smart politics. Later the British, French and Dutch came, mostly as you note after 1870.

In parallel though Arab Muslims were conquering from North Africa and so large parts of North Sub-Saharan Africa were forced to convert to Islam.
But the take away to all this is that sub-Sarahan Africa was primitive when it was contacted by the rest of the world.

So use the "light" option.

He didn't like when I told him if he wanted true quality sound, chuck all his high dollar shit and go buy a used tube amp and a record player with the ceramic cartridge.

It depends. Better CD players have better circuitry and that can result in lower noise. That said, it primarily depends on how you get the signal to your speakers. If you're analog-in (using RCA cables, for example) on your receiver, then the quality of the CD player matters a *lot* because it's *that* device's digital-to-analaogue converter (DAC) that is generating the signal you're listening to.

If you're digital-in (using optical, digital coax or HDMI) on your receiver, then it matters a *lot* less because it's the DAC in your receiver that's going to be doing the work. Receiver and amplifier quality matters a lot more.

I am digital-in on my stereo and I bought a receiver with a really good DAC. I'd like to get a CD player with digital outs and just shunt the work off to my other hardware that's already good.

If there's any difference to be heard it will be in the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) and the components used in the analog circuits.

Now, remember, all of these things are built to a price point. So unless you want to spend time researching which is the "best" they're all going to be pretty similar. IE, as cheap as the manufacturer could get away with and not have massive numbers of returns.

I'm with you. It's why I have a CD collection. But hardware really does count, too. If you have limitless money, about the best you can do in terms of sound quality is extremely good - and extremely expensive, to the point of remanufactured-by-hand $30k decks - reel-to-reel tape running at high speed with two channels produced off of masters.

You can do it, and it will sound better than basically anything, but a stereo system that has what is in essence a starting price in the six figures is completely baffling to me. There are limits, and they're not very high. I spent years talking myself into buying my current stereo, and it costs less than some audiophile HiFi setups' wiring...

361 True, but those were just little coastal enclaves, as you point out. The vast majority of Africa was not only not colonized, it wasn't even explored.
------------------
Take a read on Barrow's Boys. Following the defeat of Napolean the British Navy needed a new funding hook and Barrow, 2nd Secretary of the Navy, decided to explore all the parts of the globe that were blank on the British Navy's maps. Those Brits exploring Africa lasted around an average of 2-3 months before dropping dead of disease. Some dropped dead in less than 30 days. The Artic Explorers all were hired by Barrow. Whites did not really penetrate Africa until the very last of the 19th C and early 20th C.

Yeah, because of the lack of background noise, needle drag, etc, you get only pure sound which allows amazing lows and brilliant highs. When the sound mix and production are compressed to hell with no dynamic range (like post "loudness wars" popular tracks usually are), it almost doesn't matter what you play them on - CDs, low bitrate MP3, whatever. You get differences in noise but there's no dynamic range anyway and almost none of it is going to pin highs or lows.

Production counts. Production always counts, and it transcends the playback format. A shitty mix or a badly mastered product sucks on any format.

469 No sleeves, liners, artifacts...nothing. Just cold, cold music.

This is where we agree. CDs killed the album cover art industry. I have a poster on my wall from the album cover of Dark Side of the Moon: the green pyramids. It used to be like opening a present to buy an album, that huge beautiful cover, all the stuff on the back, even the goodies that came in some albums, the double albums with the books, etc.

That little CD booklet isn't even remotely close.

And when you come to digital downloads, you don't even get that.

473 At work we have to use a smart phone app to fill out a quiz if we are healthy enough to be allowed in the office that day. Amazing how in the last year not a single person has had even a sore throat.

They just added a question to the quiz about vaccination "for statistical purposes only". To be fair, the quiz includes a "decline" button that lets you not answer the question and never be asked again.

I'd love to know how many of us hit "decline" on the first day.

Posted by: Puddin Head at May 06, 2021 01:28 PM (/MaDp)

IIRC, Pujols was not over the hill when he went to the Angels (I believe he was ~32) but he was at his apogee, and starting to go down bubble. The Cardinals were wise to let him go on free agency, because he doubtless was insisting on a long-term contract. Nine years ago the Angels signed him (I just read) to a ten-year, $253 million contract, which was kinda like buying bananas that are just starting to turn.

I too love physical artifacts, but the convenience of having access to nearly unlimited, high-quality music from your phone is undeniable. I can't lug a turntable and rack of vinyl albums when I'm on a solo walk and want to listen to music.

Also, I find arguments of "coldness" and "warmness" to be fuzzy at best, and in the area of de gustibus. I also am extremely skeptical of the "audiophile" phenomena, just so you know where I'm coming from. Seems like arguments about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, after a certain point.

In a nnut, it's Imaging.

If the playback can place the musicians properly on the soundstage, you have achieved 98% of what folks are referring to as Audiophile Playback.

It doesn't have to cost a lot of money to get there. That's just Marketing doing what it does.

498 That's how they get around any reductions: they remove people from the direct gov payroll and bring them back as contractors. Go to any military base and see how many cooks are actually working in the mess hall. . .but the branches can tell the Idiot Pit, I mean, Congress how they reduced manpower by eliminating non-critical jobs.
Posted by: Bert G at May 06, 2021 01:28 PM (sAW0o)

Amen - you want to reduce government, you need to disallow contractors and mandate everyone into a government spot. Then, you actually have the "baseline" unhidden manpower number to work on.

Yes, yes, they say they switch to contractors b/c they are easier to get rid of, but the cold hard truth is that no one gets rid of them, and they actually usually cost more money b/c they add on more contractor spots than the government ones they eliminate...at least after a year or so, as "contract creep" kicks in...

Posted by: Puddin Head at May 06, 2021 01:36 PM (/MaDp)

502 @Bert and Nova, you are correct. Budgets need to go down commensurate with the lower headcount, so they can't just be rehired as contractors. I honestly think it will take consolidating and eliminating some sub-cabinet agencies and offices. You could probably do a 2 percent headcount reduction annually with hiring freezes and through natural churn, but to go to 5 percent means eliminating something that is being done now, which is the point.
