Biden Considers Evading Limits on Surveilling Citizens By Farming Spying Operations Out to Third Parties Who Are Less Regulated

Say, weren't all the NeverTrumpers endlessly screeching about the "authoritarian" tendencies of Trump?

Suggesting that that was a bad thing?

And yet they continue to be silent about Biden's full weaponization of government against the citizenry.

The Biden administration is considering using outside firms to track extremist chatter by Americans online, an effort that would expand the government's ability to gather intelligence but could draw criticism over surveillance of US citizens.

The Department of Homeland Security is limited in how it can monitor citizens online without justification and is banned from activities like assuming false identities to gain access to private messaging apps used by extremist groups such as the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers.

Instead, federal authorities can only browse through unprotected information on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook and other open online platforms.

The plan being discussed inside DHS, according to multiple sources, would, in effect, allow the department to circumvent those limits. A source familiar with the effort said it is not about decrypting data but rather using outside entities who can legally access these private groups to gather large amounts of information that could help DHS identify key narratives as they emerge.

By partnering with research firms who have more visibility in this space, the DHS could produce information that would likely be beneficial to both it and the FBI, which can't monitor US citizens in this way without first getting a warrant or having the pretext of an ongoing investigation. The CIA and NSA are also limited on collecting intelligence domestically.

It would, however, involve empowering a unit at DHS that is already under fierce scrutiny for its bungled handling of the Portland riots last summer, an episode that included collecting intelligence reports on journalists and unmasking private citizens, according to a source familiar with a recent internal report on the matter.

...

Outsourcing some information gathering to outside firms would give DHS the benefit of tactics that it isn't legally able to do in-house, such as using false personas to gain access to private groups used by suspected extremists, sources say.

I'm speculating here, but I would imagine that what's happened is that the left sued about these tactics being used against them, so the government signed a consent decree confessing these tactics are illegal.

But now the left's victory hurts Biden's ability to get The Real Terrorists, and they can't have that -- the left should be protected from surveillance, they think. The right should not be.

So here we go, keeping the ban in place for the left but seeking to evade it when it comes to spying in the right.

This is straight up a political oppression operation -- they admit they're not looking for crimes, but for "narratives of concern."

If they find someone pushing a "narrative of concern," they will then throw millions of dollars of investigation at that person, searching for a crime:

FBI director Christopher Wray has been emphatic during recent public testimony that the bureau does not investigate ideologies or even conspiracy theories in and of themselves, but restricts its social media monitoring to cases where they believe a crime, or potential crime, was committed.

But if the DHS could help provide a broad picture of who was perpetuating the "narratives" of concern, the FBI could theoretically use that pool of information to focus on specific individuals if there is enough evidence of a potential crime to legally do so, the source added, noting the two agencies are working closely with one another in this area.

Okay, serious question on this. How is this materially different from using a CI? When the cops use an informant, they're using someone on the inside who gives them information. They rarely ask a CI to infiltrate, but I think they're allowed to do so.

This is philosophically very different in that it is an untargeted information dragnet used to build persistent dossiers on everyone by proxying the activity through third parties, but this strikes me as essentially the corporatization of the CI system to scale it up.

The major differences I see between something like and using an informant are that this is essentially untargeted and it is not in association with an active investigation. Those are big differences indeed, but I see parallels between this and informant networks.

Is this the wrong read?

Spreading inconvenient truths (e.g. facts about the election fraud) is a "Potential Crime" ... a thought crime. Exposing the leftist mafiosa is a "Key Narrative" for which they can drag you out of your home and hold you in DC indefinitely. (soon it will be Gitmo for reprogramming?).

I read it differently. I read it as "we're going to contract with a third party to have people (or bots) join private groups that aren't normally indexed in order to index them and feed data back to us." Big Tech could definitely do that now (they own the platforms and thus have the access to index them), but just using them to get the data isn't something I read out of this. It could be what they mean, though (big tech, however, might be reticent to do so without explicit indemnification, since those actions would probably be a technical violation of the terms of service).

Either approach amounts to largely the same thing, though.

86 I read it differently.

Either approach amounts to largely the same thing, though.

true ... I like to call it "Communism" which also has a specific (Utopian) definition. But We the People have a history of disdain for (real world) communism. they can use illegal info from constant NSA surveillance on everything, and then (per Bill Binney, who created much of that spy ability) they have to do a parallel reconstruction to find evidence of those "facts" by means they can use in court. ...

Supposedly that would mean they actually have to have real evidence ... BUT, as with Flynn and others, trhey can use the illegal surveillance to frame someone (as with Flynn, Trump, others). And since they can imprison or sideline or bankrupt someone with faked crimes, they don't need to actually have a crime ... the process alone destroys the person. (so now all they need is to find the real rebels by illegal means, any one successful at counter narratives gets attacked (True the Vote woman attacked by five agencies for the crime of trying to "true the vote")

Because the government actually functions on bonds, and taxation makes the bond issues legitimate. In the absence of taxation, everyone buying a bond would have to acknowledge that the money isn't real - transfer their real capital for synthetic chits in the future. That would remove liquidity - all of it, all at once - from the bond market and everything tied to the treasury bills and bonds (which is, basically, everything). The printed money is laundered through the bond market. Eliminating that laundromat would tank everything all at once.

170 Biden Considers Evading Limits on Surveilling Citizens By Farming Spying Operations Out to Third Parties Who Are Less Regulated

This is just saying out loud what they've been doing since spy agencies demanded private telegraph companies provide them a copy of every telegraph sent.

See also the "Five Eyes" agreement (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States) all spying on each other's people and handing over the product of that spying. NSA can't legally spy on us directly, but it's totes cool for Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK spy agencies to spy on us and hand over that spy product to NSA. LEGALISM!

But since we know the government are all liars and thieves and cheats, and violate the Constitution at the drop of a hat ...
Why go to the trouble of interposing a third party? Or do they intend to create so many layers and empty shell entities that it becomes too hard to track back to them?
But the media is in their pocket, so why would they care if it gets tracked back? The story will be buried and memory-holed in short order.
Face it, they are going to do whatever they want. Whenever they want. Wherever they want.

The philosophical concept of the United States as a representative democracy (republic) run by the voters lives only in the minds of a few citizens. For any practical interaction with our government, it's DOA.

Reminder: they are not monitoring you, individual, they are monitoring narrative trends and networks. They may not be interested in silencing you in particular, Fen, but they may decide that AoSHQ is perpetuating narratives that have reach. https://tinyurl.com/4y3rjfzy

For those who don't know what this means, it means that the administration is able to draw a graph (like a network chart) of who is talking to whom. It is able to say what are the key nodes through which any business passes, find all its Internet 'friends' and interlocutors and potentially drill down into the comms themselves -- in time series. . .

The fact that you belong to a large group, for example the 50% of the US population that is conservative or Republican, does not give you safety in numbers. Within this large group of millions are a much smaller number of key leadership nodes. They are the nodes that matter, the top of the hierarchy mandated by Dunbar's Number.

If you can control, corrupt or even bait those nodes you can reduce the entire group to impotence. You can effectively decapitate it. . .

And what's funny about that (though not "ha-ha funny") is how fiercely protective California is of its agriculture. It's the only state I've ever driven into that has a border checkpoint and border guards to quiz you about foreign (out of state) produce. I got into a fight about it and drove through - it's flatly illegal - but they have that system in place.

That's why it's so important to keep ratcheting up the fear of white supremacy, boogaloo boys, three percenters, the "insurrection" on the 6th, etc.

For anyone who's not champing at the bit to kill Republicans, the hard left wants to convince the normies that it may not be nice, but it's NECESSARY to do X horrible thing to the right, because they're a bunch of secret klansmen who want to put you in chains or worse.

320 I've been thinking of buying a couple 330 gallon IBCs to collect
rainwater. I'm in WA, so water is plentiful, but I think it might be
wise to be able to provide at least a bit of the old H2O for myself.
Thoughts?
...
I bought two early last year, gave one away actually. I got them used (food grade) for $75 each. For my family it was by far the most practical and least expensive way to have enough water storage for more than just a couple days worth. Mine are the 275 gal variety.

343 > there are places where collecting rainwater is illegal because it is considered to be state property (my tired old brain cells say "Colorado"). might want to check.

Thanks, I'll check on legality first. If I remember right, a lot of those laws are because of very early "water rights" agreements and the laughable argument that if you collect the bit of rain that hits your roof, you're stealing from someone downstream of you that has a legal right to that water.

I say that argument is laughable because most of that water would end up evaporating anyway, and if someone is actively using the water (for crops, drinking, cooking, bathing, etc) it all ends up in the ground eventually.

347 News is way down.
Primtime network TV is down modestly (about 5%).
Sports are way down.
Movies are way down.
Streaming is unknown because no one reports reliably.

Where is the audience going? It's possible they've shifted to streaming, but based on the financial reports, that is likely not true. There's been some shift to it, but not enough to make up for the bone-crunching declines observed in every known dimension.

I suspect that actual total time spent consuming media products is in the process of collapsing. The audience isn't shifting somewhere else, it's disappearing.

Now, on the other hand, Our Betters and Biden seem determined to destroy the middle and working classes toot sweet, so they may actually stumble into causing the M&WCs into being woke to their assholery in threatening their lives, livelihoods and family, friends, and neighbors.

354 AND - the "American Families Plan" will be snooping on your bank accounts without a warrant to make sure you are reporting all of your income. Under the bill, financial institutions will be required to report all of your inflows and outflows (checking, savings, Paypal, Venmo, Western Union, etc.) to the IRS so the IRS can determine if you are reporting all of your income.

Sounds like a warrantless search to me.
