The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"There was a lot of confusion because there were so many people in the group," "They were all checking their bags and putting their own bags on the conveyors, so it took a second for them to realize he was missing — but as soon as they did people sprang into action and the police were able to find him quickly.Airport spokesperson Pat Hogan

No word if the little bastard's name was Kevin. Or Anthony.

Quote II

"He made Belgium bigger and France smaller, it's not a good idea," David Lavaux, mayor of the Belgian village of Erquelinnes

Quote III

“I am proud of our engineers at Jamnagar who have worked tirelessly, with a great sense of patriotic urgency, to meet this new challenge… [They’ve] risen to the occasion and delivered when India needs it the most,” Mukesh Ambani

Quote IV

“It’s unfortunate that the powers that be at N Magazine are spineless jellyfish who are held hostage by the whims of the vocal minority" Dave Portnoy

When a crisis hits, sometimes it's better to do nothing than to rush out and put bad policy into practice. The CDC had no business controlling Landlord/Tenant relationships.

Federal Judge Overturns CDC's Eviction Moratorium

Update (1300ET): White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed at today's briefing that Biden's Justice Department is reviewing the federal judge's decision, and "should have something to say later today."

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge also reacted to the ruling at a Wednesday press conference, saying the Biden administration is already taking steps to protect renters under threat of eviction.

“We know we have put enough money in the system through the rescue plan that people should come out of this June 30th, at least currently, and so that in itself is going to allow us hopefully to keep people in their homes, as well as those people who actually have homes through FHA or through the federal government,” she said.

Of course, no one is surprised that the Biden admin would appeal the decision, favoring socialized central control. Additionally, this could be a major roadblock to Biden’s efforts to conjoin the expiration of the moratorium with the distribution of $50 billion in rental assistance.

A month ago, The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board stated yet another true but unpopular fact: "Continuing government bans on eviction and foreclosure are doing more harm than good."

The CDC invoked the 1944 Public Health Service Act, which allows the agency to take measures to prevent the spread of communicable diseases between states. People who get evicted might move in with family or friends and spread the disease, the CDC explained. What diktat couldn’t the CDC justify under this expansive rationale?

...

In short, the government is bludgeoning private businesses to fix a problem it created.

Suspension of rent and mortgage payments was justifiable last spring when states locked down and some 22 million workers lost jobs. But the jobless rate has dropped to 6% from 14.8%, and employers are desperate to hire.

If I were a betting man. I would wager that all she get's is a slap on the wrist. St. Louis Circuit Attorney faces disciplinary hearings.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is facing a disciplinary hearing that could result in the loss of her law license.

An investigation launched in 2019 by the office of Alan Pratzel, the chief disciplinary counsel appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court, has found probable cause that Gardner committed professional misconduct during her past attempts to prosecute former Republican Gov. Eric Greitens, KMOV reported.

She's a black woman. Disbarred? Not hardly.

Earlier today Ace covered the disastrous Liz Cheney and her re-election to House Leadership. We will see how much sway President Trump has. Trump endorses Rep. Elise Sefanik to replace the Wyoming bitch.

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as the House Republican Conference chair.

How far will an EV travel on one charge? In my humble opinion, not far enough that I would want to replace my truck.

Based on miles traveled per charge and 2021 electric car pricing:

Ford Mustang Mach-E tops the list as the most expensive electric car at $42,895 but falls to the bottom half of car rankings in terms of miles traveled per charge (230 miles).
The second most expensive electric car at $40,000, the Nissan Ariya, offers the most distance traveled per charge (300 miles).
Chevrolet Bolt EV presents itself as a very affordable electric car option at $31,995 with a very modest amount of miles traveled per charge (259 miles).
Mini Cooper SE presents itself as the cheapest option on the list at $29,900 and perhaps unsurprisingly travels the shortest distance per charge (110 miles).
The average distance that most electric cars travel per charge is around 220 miles, with the majority of the cars that travel the average distance costing in between $34,000 to $40,000.
For our data presented, we gathered information from Business Insider. The most affordable EVs or electric cars were defined as most affordable if their official Manufacturer's Recommended Sale Price (or MSRP) listed below, at, or slightly above $35,000. It is important to note that since most cars are eligible for the $7,500 tax credit, some cars shared in our data have an MSRP higher than $35,000. As a result of the tax credit these higher-priced options can still offset buyer costs with total costs at or below $35,000 in the long run.

JERE WOKE UP on the morning of October 24, 2020, expecting what Finnish college students call normi päivä, an ordinary day. It was a Saturday, and he’d slept in. The night before, he had gone drinking by the beach with some friends. They’d sipped cheap apple liqueur, listened to Billie Eilish on his boom box. Now Jere (pronounced “yeh-reh” needed to clear his head. He was supposed to spend this gray fall day on campus, finishing a group physics project about solar energy. The 22-year-old took a walk around the lake near his apartment outside Helsinki. Then, feeling somewhat refreshed, he jumped on the bus.

Colleges & universities have cut 650,000 jobs, a 13% workforce reduction, since February 2020.

Let that sink in: 650,000 of our former colleagues have lost their jobs. This number tracks the estimated average 14% decline in institutional revenue.

I suppose this Bull Shit has nothing to do with it.

MILLVILLE – When a seafood processor tried to replace human clam shuckers with a mechanical system the result was melted ceiling tiles and light fixtures.

Now, Cape May Foods is suing two local firms hired to design, manufacture, and install a ventilation system meant to remove heat generated by the infrared-based shucking system.

Cape May Foods, off Gorton Road, has relied on human shuckers for more than 60 years. Last year, the firm sought to switch to Infrashucker, an infrared system that "mechanically opens the clam shell and efficiently detaches clam meat from its shell," according to a lawsuit filed in February.

OK Horde, help me out here. Is this Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day? Or a Genius Award Winner? Or both?

Lavinia "Lavi" Mounga of Orem, Utah, was traveling from Salt Lake City to Hawaii on April 28 for a family vacation when she gave birth to her son, Raymond, at just 29 weeks gestation.

Mounga said she had no idea she was even pregnant.

She said she felt the "weirdest pain" so she went to the bathroom and passed out, only to wake up to see a baby in her arms.

I have my thoughts............

A good start but now let's see if we can increase that percentage by 77 percentage points more.
------------The dirty little secret in this number is that they are NOT cutting professors or administrative bloat at the top. They are cutting the lower wage workers such as custodians, admin assistants, and IT folks who keep things running. They have reached the point where they literally can't cut any more of these people and still keep the lights on. We've lost 1/3 of our staff at my institution in the past couple of years. Professors are down as well, but not nearly to that degree.

74 I then shared a wonderful story from my rock-n-roll youth in Detroit (live in person on 'Bob Tom' radio to tens of millions on my new DVD) when my band THE LOURDES won the Michigan Battle of the Bands in 1963, and was rewarded with the privilege of performing on the same Cobo Hall stage with the gods of RB, the mighty FUNK BROTHERS of Motown. In one of the most moving experiences in my musical career, the biggest, baddest Funk Brother of all, sashayed over to me and my band, put his strong black, genius hand on my trembling white shoulder, looked down upon me, and stated, 'Boy, you keeps playin guitar like dat, youz gonna be a n****r when youz grows up.' I shook in awe and reverence, and stuttered, 'Thank you sir.' I meant that, too. For these amazingly simple statements of humor, respect and honesty, I have been attacked as a racist.

Miley got to missing our little kitten "Corn Pop" who went missing the day we moved into the new house here. She found some local ads for kittens, and we found one very cute over near Anderson.

When we got there, well we ended up taking two home, of course, boy and a girl. I remembered a joke name for a cat (may have been Gutfeld), "Purry Mason".

So they are dubbed Purry and Della. As I type, Purry is asleep on my left shoulder and Della is on my right. Purry ran Della off the left and made her move to the right.

Seriously, diesel-electric can be damned efficient at least on large scales, locomotives do it, and I think some big ship and sub drives do it as well.

Your diesel (or other big-ass powerplant) turns a generator, which drives motors connected directly to the wheels (or propellers).

This can be very efficient -- there's no drive train losses. In the older days, they used series-field DC motors, which could have enormous starting torque and be started smoothly. Lots of advantages.

I wonder if anyone has ever looked at scaling that down to say big rig truck sizes. I doubt it would be practical for small vehicles.

151 golf carts are great, for getting around golf courses. I know some people that use them to get around their little burb. But other than that, I think they could be a real problem. Anyone who has worked in the golf world and had to turn around carts quickly on a very busy day, realizes the electric ones can bow out pretty quickly.

I have had to leave a cart on the course and hoof it more than a few times. The gas ones are better, but they usually have regulators on them so you can't go very fast. Also, those things have no safety features whatsoever.

Some years ago, some "amateur" inventors (who were likely very smart mechanics) had built a low horsepower turbo diesel engine and put it in car, that did just that.

It is always amazing how a couple of very smart mechanical guys can accomplish something that is beyond GM, Chrysler or Ford.

The spike proteins that coat the CV-19 virons are the part that is responsible for the blood clotting. And the mRNA vaccines train your body to make the damned spike protein so that your immune system (hopefully) develops antibodies against it. But those in-house spike proteins can fuck with your blood just as the virus ones do.

Yeah...diesel-electric is great for things like trains and super heavy work vehicles where you need to put out a more or less constant amount of power for a long time. Not so great in a car type situation.

I do know a guy who once got a Prius going over 100 once. Got pulled over, cop was sufficiently impressed to let him off with a warning.

Posted by: CppThis at May 05, 2021 09:58 PM (zcf1k)

211 Electric provides plenty of torque as I understand it. In big trucks torque and range, most carry 200 gallons of diesel, are what is important. Hauling around ~80,000lbs any distance needs both. Cost counts as well naturally.

233 I have no prob with Cinco De Mayo. Sure most have no idea what it is about, but what is new about that? President's Day is my pet peeve, because it is a made up holiday, a holiday that doesn't exist. At least that is true on the national level and the same with half of the states.

That, plus a scam to force the landlords into foreclosure so Dopey Joe's owner banks and/or the gummint can snap up the properties. That's the real motivation here, I think.

It's not so much the range as the recharge time, location of chargers, and wait-in-line for a charge time that makes or breaks EVs as vehicles for trips outside of and between urban areas. If I had to stop every 200 miles for a charge but didn't have to wait for a charger hookup and I could full-charge in 5 minutes, it would be a pain but not intolerable. Those if's are not going to come into reality, though.

The country and the world were dealt a gigantic blow when Trump was removed, not a single one of the many important great things his policies created or enabled will now happen or return, not one, for years, at a minimum. And some have no do-overs, damage is more/less permanent (e.g. there's not a chance any of the millions of illegal aliens who will be added to the US in the next 4 years will ever be removed or dealt with in any way).

Constant speed is one of the big advantages. The electric motor drive system provides a (near) perfect "infinitely variable" ratio transmission. For acceleration, you run the diesel at full speed, at its rated speed (with the generator tuned to match, of course).

You can then get enormous starting torque to the wheels and accelerate it smoothly to speed with the engine turning at constant speed the whole time.

In the old days, this meant DC motors. But now, with the electronics revolution that has made high current, high power solid state components available and reasonably priced, you can do all sort of fancy shit. Consider the variable speed (frequency) induction motor drive. It's a rectifier --> DC bus --> variable frequency inverter in some compact package. (Your brushless cordless power tool motor drives are something very similar. It's essentially an AC synchronous motor, albeit with a permanent magnet field)

You could use those for your drives, or more likely something even better optimized for the application. I imagine you could make something relatively lightweight and compact.

Electric motors can blow away IC in the torque dept. You wanna drag race, you want high acceleration, you can do it with electric motors.

I don't know how practical it would be, but the IC-electric drive could be tuned and souped up to make one hell of drag racer, where acceleration, not speed is what you're after.

I imagine you could rig some of those super-capacitor devices that can dump enormous current in a short time and develop some whoop-ass electric motor torque to go along with the generator.

One slightly misleading bit: it was always legal to carry a rifle,
shotgun, or pistol openly in Alaska, even before the trend of
legalizing concealed carry became a thing.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at May 05, 2021 10:27 PM (JZT2F)
same with Virginia. Open carry was always legal, because it was never illegal. Other states had to put it into law in the 90s and 2000s because it was banned. But Virginia has fallen. The game now is the Complete Dem take over of all branches of government and all state positions, allows them to get rid of "preemption:" The thing that kept VA normal was preemption didn't allow radical cities to make their own gun laws and other laws. Now that the Dems swept everything in 2018, all bets are off.

316 They even ban CCW in libraries. Again, these are state and county
issued permits. My guess is there have been very few Old West gunfights
in libraries. The Dems did it because they could. The gov banned carry
in ABC stores years ago simply because he could. I want to make an
analogy here but i will let it be. It has to do with the idea that some
groups are only limited not by design, but what they are capable of
doing. The idea or thought and reason has no place in the discussion.

Not too fast. At our county Republican meeting on Monday night, we were told that passing an amended version and sending it to conference committee would be a stalling tactic by the Senate to kill the bill. We passed a resolution to send to our senators to pass the House bill without amendment to prevent that from occurring. Let's see what happens.

I'm not a car guy, so please feel free to poke holes in this, but this is my observation: CA car rules, in the long-term, probably made it possible for today's trucks to get comparable mileage than sedans. CA forced auto companies to make more fuel-efficient and less-polluting motors. Detroit hated it at first, but then found out that they can use these same engines in trucks, where the profit margins ended up being much bigger than those old sedans they don't make anymore.

I remember "Alaska Carry" I think they had the same in Vermont, or was it New Hampshire? I think it was Vermont. I remember when the shall issue thing gained steam., For sure FL was the first major state to make a change. VA was a bid deal because of the VCDL. Not just the cost of the individual current for a single car, but the complete cost of the infrastructure required to actually generate and deliver that current to consumers, in the quantity they are talking about.

It's because, at the core of their plans, it is impossible to deliver.

It's a huge lie.

I used to think the same way. It is easy to have predjucdices. I always thought CCW was better, for many reasons. But now the state and local governments are scaling those rights back. I used to think that some who open carried, particularly in suburban areas, were showing off. But it is not for me to question the rights of law abiding citizens. The reality is the left is against all 2a rights. They will ban at any chance they get, and not once will they think twice.

389 I personally prefer ccw for the discretion. But
certainly there are times when people should open carry. What about the
law abiding citizen, who has the legal right, but doesn't want to jump
through hoops and pay a tax to the government?
All issues with law abiding open carry, not weirdos, stem from two civilizations that have grown apart.

The driver "out front" development was derived from his push to get the driver out of the slaughterhouse behind and atop the serious rotational & reciprocating shrapnel zone. His design was mostly derided in the sport until. It began winning many races, and; Other drivers using it survived engine ka-booms what would've otherwise been career-enders.

464 > How is moose? Gamey?

It is delicious if it is well handled, like most wild game.

If you get some knob who doesn't gut it right away and chop it up so it can cool off, and then leaves it in a filthy game bag in the sun in the back of the pickup for a day or two, it can be pretty foul. "Gamey" is almost always "piss-poor meat handling", in my experience.

Well-handled, I prefer it to beef.

The hunters who really care about the meat quality sometimes bring along a dedicated small chainsaw, so the animal can be butchered and cooled rapidly. They use a new bar and chain, and lubricate the chain with cooking oil.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've seen a video of an Alaska Native elder turn a whole caribou into cuts of meat in about 15 minutes, using nothing but a large Buck knife. Damned impressive. I could have lived without watching him eat the live bot fly maggots off the animal's hide, though. Those are considered a delicacy, and are one of the hunter's perqs.

478 I can't speak for moose. My guess is there is a reason you don't see moose sold at many grocery stores. I am not putting it down mind you. The reality of cuisine is much of it is regional. People enjoy the things they grew up with. I know many who think White Tail deer is no good. The reality is they never h ad it slaughtered well, and prepared well. Even then it is ok if they don't like it, not everyone likes everything. But White Tail Deer can bee amazing. There is a reason in the commercial market it is so expensive.

I recall an episode with of an early show with Anthony Bourdain. The Maine duck hunters loved to hunt duck. It was their heritage. But they didn't like the taste of duck that much. The reality is none of them could cook it properly. Bourdain showed them am easy recipe and they were amazed by it.

500 The first deer I even got. I was a teen and very much all alone. I made the mistake of hiking way too far into the backwoods because I didn't think it out. The real issue was I hadn't seen a deer in years, it was another time. This was not the Llano Estacado in in Texas, where you can pick the deer you want.

So i got my first deer. Some random guy comes upon me and offers to help me drag the deer and butcher it. All he wanted was the backstrap. I didn't know what a backstrap was at the time. Some say the guy took me. But I don't see it that way. the guy helped me. I don't need the best cut, it was my first deer. I still have the mount.

511 Javelina is properly a Collared Peccary, and is more closely related to the skunk (similar glands) than to any pig.

But tasty, when properly butchered, prepared and cooked. No challenge there. But "pig" it is not. One of my longer game shots was 340 yards on a Javelina, with the ranch owner's .264 Win Mag. Laser Beam, no sighting correction, the grubber fell to the crosshairs like it was lightning struck, with nary a twitch between shot and dead.

His ranch foreman knew how to prep and cook 'em, and wow, was it GOOD!

520 So happens I had lots of experience observing Soviet diplomatic personnel - lower-end types, horse-holders - shopping at the Safeway on Wisconsin Avenue just north of Georgetown in DC. Many moons ago.

Men, only - women didn't do the shopping (reverse of Soviet norms). The guys standing there, seemingly befuddled, before an aisle of wild diverse riches.

Now. Language barrier - I'm guessing their English wasn't great (I never attempted to speak with them - they'd instantly/reasonably/absurdly think you're FBI, so fuggedaboutit). And they're guys. Russian guys. Probably have never seen the inside of a kitchen except to fetch the next bottle.

Plus, I kind of sympathize. This was a ways back. Even then, a bewildering array of options confronted the shopper, in some sections (much "worse" today, of course). Anyway.

548 Caesar - this was early post-Soviet, so a very distinctively odd mix of situations (very highly educated people, suddenly with no economy or social structure of any kind).

But a joke among NGO Americans in these countries was, for example, that a particular truck driver "only had a masters, not a PhD". Driver/assistant at one UN office I worked with was a serious world-level *astrophysicist*. The UN program director joked that the guy "got more email" than he did.

And he found $ and helped with visas for the guy to attend a conference in London, by the Royal Society. I think he presented a paper on black holes.

Back home - he was quite happy to be a general go-fer and driver for a prestigious foreign/int'l organization.

(note: while in some areas obviously there were discrepancies with western degrees, in the USSR there were no "feminist studies" graduates, or "intersectionality" specialists)

For my mother's birthday, we're all going to the one of her choice, "The Open Hearth", which is another older steak house-ish place out on Wade Hampton Blvd (that name will trigger the Woke, of course), which is Hwy 29 and would take you into Spartanburg and then to the Giant Ass in Gaffney and on to the NC line.

That's another older one that started around 1960 or so.

Della just jumped up on my shoulder again and went to sleep. Purry may be hungry, or just needing some attention, I don't know...

638 My current project is to strip down the rust-riddled body of a Suzuki Sidekick, alla samey as Geo Tracker, I think. Little thing runs well; but body was shot. It has a full frame under it, solid axles front and rear, and coil springs all round. Part-time 4WD. As of the moment, end gate, doors, rear body, and windshield frame are in the scrap pile. My plan is to leave the cowl, front floor, and transmission tunnel in place, and construct a Jeep-style tub body around them. Flat, fold-down windshield, of course. And a roll bar, which I happen to have one.

640 duck ala orange is ok. Peking duck is the greatest presentation of the bird. If you look at the old school ways, it is pretty astonishing the steps they would go through to make a dish.

I recall the duck press made famous by L'academie de cuisine. That seems to be the ultimate unitasker. Real Peking Duck, done in the old school style, is about as elaborate a dish as possible. And the thing is, it is one of the finest dishes you will ever have. On the low down, I call them Chinese Fajitas.

There is a restaurant in north Phoenix, called Chino Banditos, that offers Chinese/Mexican fusion cuisine, also Jamaican jerk chicken. It's not at all pretentious; you walk in, order at the counter, and a server brings you a tray with your order on it. Very good eats, and quite inexpensive.

702 The Chinese Fajita is Peking Duck. The Turkish version is Schwarma. The Chinese do another one called moo shu, but it doesn't come close. There are other versions I can't think of at the moment. There is a Vietnamese version, it entails wrapping crispy pork and other great things in lettuce leaves. The Koreans do something similar with grilled beef strips.

AS far as burritos go, I have some pretty strong opinions there. I have very old school cook books that describe burritos. They were a play on the term for a little burro. The word had very little meaning, but the food was supposed to be a snack. Back in the day the chance people would put rice in a burrito was nil. They were small tortilla wraps with beans cheese and maybe beef.
I recall when a restaurant decided a burrito was supposed to resemble a pillow. It was long before Chipotle came around and was no where near So Cal. It was interesting, but not a burrito.

good on ya there. It might seem lame but it is true. People react better to someone who thinks positively. I know people have their reasons to be negative, but in the end, it gets really old. People gravitate to happy people. and sometimes the happy people have all the reasons in the world to be negative. The key is they don't go for them. I personally and still working on that. 718 it would be a stretch to say some French crepes are like burritos. But I have always had a view on that subject. I never made it unlcear that I love Peking Duck. I also love Fajitas. I go back to the times they made them on the Mexican border, long before any chain glombed on. And yes, ?I think I make them better than most lol. Most chain stuff is Godawful, that is the truth. I doubt many would say I don't claim what I believe to be accurate.

Another international version is well made falafel. If that is done fresh and well, you are in for a treat.

722 Couple years ago for grins tracked top 10 each week and tallied for end of year. Was going to do it last year but it's a lot of searching with a tablet, and no place to keep the lists, had to do it on 2 note pads. Did post it New Years eve but it blew the margins. It wouldn't get past the Pixy band now.
TJM had top if I remember right, Insome was up there.

that is a style of food and i don't demean it. I have heard of the So Cal Burrito that contains french fries. If I am going to defend Tex Mex as a stand alone cuisine, I can't exactly call out other cuisines that go another way. Chipotle proves that the pillow burrito is a major factor. What I wonder about there is where is the chipotle part?
Again, burritos were tiny snacks in Mexico and on the border. The term itself is diminutive. The idea of putting rice into a flour tortilla decades ago, would have seemed odd.

725 In tracking a top ten week after week and months is interesting, many make list for months then totally drop off it ( not they leave just don't post as much, and others jump on it out of nowhere but a short time. Many make list just once, some say 5 times. That's why it gets extensive and you need some way to list all.

Posted by: Skip at May 06, 2021 04:02 AM (Cxk7w)

726 Don't think I will make the top 10 list. But someday it would be fun to try. As a kid, my brother would pay me to be quiet. Back then I ever could make any money that way. Lol

you are known for popping in at a certain time, saying few words, and moving on. I think that is the best way to be. It is better than going on and on when you are out of stuff. So much better to hang back. I haven't learned that lesson, I mostly spout off and then run out of steam.

that looks really good. I will check back on that to try to get the recipe. Did you ever try out my guy? He used to call his channel Cooking in Russia. I guess now it is called Cooking in Finland. The guy is legit, a real chef. I tried his restaurant style Borscht a few years ago and it was the greatest stew I ever made, and I don't like beets. I just checked it on YT and it didn't come up easily. I guess he changed his name. Too bad, because the guy is legit.

754 Today is the National Day of Prayer-
an event encouraged by Billy Graham and supported by Presidents for 70 years. People of all faiths pray for our nation. This year's theme is "love, life and liberty" Some events may be in your community or at the State House. Pray for the safety of all involved, and if can't- or would prefer not to go to a larger event or watching events on T.V.- and you're a person of faith consider praying at home

Here is a website for it:

Today's theme comes from 2nd Corinthians 3:17-"Now the Lord is a Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom."

760 I used to like Burritos for a quick snack, too. I still do, but I used to too. I noticed "shrinkflation" is a serious problem now. The "XXL" version the grocery sells looks like a small size frozen burrito to me. They always use something called TVP, or "textured vegetable protein", I don't know why. Tastes strange.

It really cheered me up. Life is good.
