Gun Thread: Attitude Adjustment Edition! [Weasel]

motivational pic scaled.jpg

Howdy everyone! Are you ready for another wacky installment of the good ol' Gun Thread? Been doing any shooting? I haven't been to the farm in a few weeks so I suspect I'm pretty rusty. Hopefully I will get down there this coming week for a couple of days and remedy that.

I added the top picture just for a laugh, but realized it actually contains a pretty good message, and that's about attitude; specifically attitude when shooting. What in the hell am I talking about? Your guess is as good as mine, so let's see if there are any clues in the thread below, shall we?

I have mentioned this before, and having no better ideas for content today, think I will mention it again. Your attitude influences your shooting, and no, I'm not going all metaphysical on you. WeaselDoctrine teaches us a positive attitude and outlook really does influence performance.

Really! I am not making this up! Ever notice when you feel like crap or do not want to be somewhere doing a specific thing, your performance tends to suffer? When I was coaching, a shooter's attitude played a not insignificant part in my squadding decisions for a match. All things being equal, if a shooter dragged themselves up to the line and appeared to not really want to be there, they very often found themselves on the bench for team matches that day. Why? First, a lackluster attitude can be infectious, and I didn't want anyone spreading a non-winning attitude. Secondly, someone who isn't focused on the job isn't giving their best or living up to their potential. I wanted good shooters who were focused and on top of their game. Plain and simple.

Everyone has bad days and I get that. I had bad days as a coach, too. However, it is imperitive you find a way to shake that off when it happens. If you are properly equipped and have the requisite skills, then any failure in performance is coming from your head. If you are confident in your gear and abilities you will perform well. If you are tentative and unsure, you're probably wasting ammunition. Even if it's just a day of casual plinking, think about what you are doing. Think about the target and imagine the bullet's flight. Form a mental image of the bullet going into the center of what you're shooting. Before you load up, mentally rehearse your stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger squeeze. Concentrate on not flinching or anticipating the shot. For rifle shooters, observe the wind, then double and even triple-check your firing solutions. Finally, you will perform best when rested, alert, and again, focused. If you're hurried or rushed or if your head just isn't into it, perhaps save the range trip for another day.

First up, we have an instructional video sent in by our pal Scuba_Dude. It's over 17 minutes long, but the inportant part is in the first half. It is not graphic, and I encourage you to watch it.

This guy is lucky to be alive. That's not hyperbole, he really is very, very lucky to be alive. Two takeaways from this; always wear eye protection when shooting, and always be certain the gun you are shooting is rated for the ammunition you are using. Do not ever shoot someone else's reloads, or any mystery ammo with an uncertain provenance. That is the mistake this guy made, and he almost paid a very dear price. As it is, I bet he wishes he had a do over.

You do not have to e shooting a 50 caliber rifle to get into trouble. The operating pressures of just about all small arms ammunition is high enough to cause serious and possible fatal injuries in the event of a catastrophic failure. Yes, even a 9mm round can blow up your hand or poke out your eye if the gun fails. It's not worth it people. Especially now with ammunition in short supply, the temptation to shoot whatever you can find is great. Don't do it. Stick with commercially manufactured ammunition that is intended for your gun. If you are unsure, ask someone more experienced, and go home with ten fingers and two eyeballs.

Thanks Scuba-Dude!

Next up we have a great question from our pal One-eyed cat peepin' in the seafood store regarding .357 Magnum ammunition.

I am a new shooter/owner; heeding your recommendation (for non-complex operation for my wife and me), my first (and only, so far) purchase is a 7-shot .357 magnum 4" barrel Ruger GP100 revolver. I recently found some .357 ammo at what seemed a decent price (~ $1.30/round with shipping, etc. included): 110 gr JHP. Doing a little reading, I thought, perhaps, the high muzzle velocity resulting from light weight would deliver a lot of energy (ft-lbs) and good expansion, but have also read that the light round can be problematic.

So, am thinking this would be a round to keep in a couple speed-loaders for home defense, but to avoid using on the range.

First, congratulations on the new gun, and that is an excellent question One-eyed cat!

I recommend not using a steady diet of light, high velocity rounds in .357 Magnum. Using them for self-defense is fine, just practice with something heavier and slower at the range.

POP QUIZ! Now for all of the rest of you, why do I reccommend this?

What's better than a regular MoMe? A Gunshow MoMe! Our pal blaster reports:

Sitrep after a meetup at The Nations Gun Show which is held at Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly VA. First, the cast of characters: sharon(willow's apprentice), Iris, JesseinDC, Hrothgar, myself (blaster), and sra blaster, and a friend of the blog, or at least friend of people on the blog, Rick. I think he has a Cafe Americain or something.

Anyway, we went off to The Nations Gunshow. A bit about that. I recall hearing advertising for this show in the past, over 900 tables! One and half miles of guns, knives, and ammo! Well, not so much in COVID world. Governor Coonman McKlanhood really doesn't want gunshows, so there are...restrictions. In this case, you have to pre-purchase tickets online and provide a significant amount of personal detail presumably for contact tracing. And you have to buy for a particular 2 hour period - and be there 15 minutes early so they can pre-check your tickets. A lot more pre-planning required to go. And as good morons we planned for a time and met up. Well, mostly. We eventually got all in one place in the Expo hall!

Also, the show was smaller. Cause or effect, hard to say. But smaller than in the past. Certainly not 900 tables. But there were some.

Ammo prices were...eh. Boxed ammo was not particularly at special gunshow prices. Pretty much $1 a round for boxes of 50 9mm that weren't Wolf or Tula or RedArmyAmmo. FMJ, $1.50 on up for hollowpoint and defensive ammo. There were some deals to be found - I picked up some loose bagged 9mm FMJ for $35/50 (bought 3 bags - tried to do a bundle 3 for $100 no deal). Not reman so seemed like a good idea to pick some up if it was cheaper than usual.

Gun prices really ranged by the seller. Some had good prices. Some had not so good prices. I used a Heritage Rough Rider 22LR revolver as a gauge - one seller had them for $139 another had the same model for $199. If you wanted a Lewis gun that was emi-automatic there was someone there who could hook you up.

sharon wanted to look at gun cases and they were there for her to look up. She wants a hard case so she can take her 22 rifle to the TXMoMe this year. She found most cases are roughly her same size so a little hard to handle, but the important thing was being able to see things in person. Also a Glock G44 caught her eye seems like one of those may be in her future, too.

I also picked up a long eye relief scope for my Mossberg Scout Rifle. Sent a pic of it all tacced up to Weasel not sure if it will accompany this writeup. Also picked up an IWB holster for sra blaster for her P365. Mother's Day is coming up, and, well, I'm romantic like that.

Afterward we went to dinner and groused about the fraud in the White House and how we should never, ever, talk to the FBI without a lawyer.

A great Moronic Day!

Excellent report blaster, thank you! Sounds like great company and a great time. I went to the Chantilly show a few times back in the day, it just became too crowded, even when going on Friday when the doors opened, and rarely were there deals to be found. On the plus side, the thing was enormous!!

Also from our pal blaster is a pic of his new rifle!

16 All right!! Pew pew thread time!!
As the picture above shows I was at the range on Saturday with CBD. Finally got the rifle zeroed at 100. I started at the top left of the target. The first shot you can see hit off the squares left and in the middle. Adjusted scope, 2nd shot hit right where it says 3R at the top of the target. Adjusted scope one more time and you can see the results.

Shot the target in a clockwise fashion and called it a day after shooting the center of the target.
Was good getting the scope and rifle zeroed but it was even better that I was outside and not working!!!

29 Based on my regular sweeps, ammo prices are falling slightly, supply is increasing.
Gun prices are...volatile. It seems to depend entirely on perceived supply. When the auctions start to disappear, people will pay a lot extra.

One thing that has me scratching my head is the sudden surge in the price of Spanish Ruby pistols. These things were generally cheap and stayed that way. The supply dried up and people started paying three or four times as much.

I guess when you want a Ruby, you want it NOW.

32 My buddy and I were at the range Friday plinking with our Ruger 10/22s. We were shooting at clay pigeon parts lying on a berm at 40 yrds or so. The game was to call your shot. If you missed the other guy cleaned it up with his shot. You got bragging rights for cleaning up. As we went along, the parts kept getting smaller.

When we started, the wind was 10 mph or so. By the time we were taking our last shots the wind was gusting up to 25 mph and almost blowing our rifles off target! Alot of fun just plinking with 22's!

I enjoy the gun thread!

The supply is generally fixed (we do get lend-lease turn-ins from time to time), but demand can vary greatly.

Look at .40 caliber pistols (and ammo). Both once commanded a premium but now, 9mm is king. During the worst of the gun shortage, you could find high-end pistols in .40 at reasonable prices because the demand was so low.

I watched a Military Arms video about .380 being a good carry gun and the commentator wanted to show the difference between (expensive) self defense rounds and (not so expensive) ball ammo. He fired into ballistic gel from about 2 to 4 feet to show the penetration. The self defense ammo only penetrated about 8-10 inches with very small cavitation wounds. The ball ammo penetrated 14-16 inches with a large cavitation wound. He mentioned that the FIB recommends 12 inches. I may have to rethink my carry ammo.

BTW, what's everyone's opinion on Midway USA? They sell lots of gear, AND guns and ammo. I've purchased some gear and some ammo from them. Generally found it to be price competitive. (I picked up colored plastic ammo boxes, and have now color-coded my ammo storage by caliber. Yes, I know, for some of you there aren't enough colors on the palette for you to do that....)

If everyone thinks it's a decent place to buy, maybe add it to Weasel's list of ammo guys up there.

plus they already have my FFL and COE on file, so i know it will ship ASAP.

65 Honest, didn't read the comments so far (SOP for here, right?), so, not cheating.

Weasel's advice on not shooting stout .357 Mag rounds a lot is based mostly on the possible effects on the revolver. Top-strap erosion, primarily. Also, over time, "shjooting it loose" - though that can be fixed.

I'd add a whole different layer of doubts the marginal value of .357 Mag for home defense, but that's a can of differently colored horses, or barrel of different worms, or something like that.

66 The self defense ammo only penetrated about 8-10
inches with very small cavitation wounds. The ball ammo penetrated 14-16
inches with a large cavitation wound. He mentioned that the FIB
recommends 12 inches. I may have to rethink my carry ammo.

Yes, there are some rounds that are hot enough to make hollow point pretty much obligatory. Magnums, for example. But the smaller autoloaders really don't have the juice to benefit from it.

73 Love love love the WWII instructional films on small arms. Have mentioned them before. For many reasons. One thing I've noted is the "literacy" of the narration, vs. what one often sees today. Gee, what a surprise.

There's one WWII instruction film I find very well done, recommend it to anyone seeking a basic explanation/illustration of the different firearm actions (manual, semi-automatic, full automatic).

76 Bwah? .357 may be the most versatile cartridge/platform ever. If I could only choose one, .357 would probably be it. Will handle everything from powder puff .38 loads to take small game, and with full power cartridges out of a rifle will approach .30-30 rifle velocities.

No range report as I have not yet had an opportunity to shoot the new rifle. Did have a productive week though as Iris and I found a place to take the handgun course required before you can buy a handgun in Md. it is at 7:30 am on a Sunday morning but everything done in 4 hours including the shooting part at the end. $60 and a month of free range time or for an extra $110, full year's worth of range time. Only catch is whether they have ammo.

Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at May 02, 2021 06:29 PM (sd8p8)

78 So I put some glass on the scout and a couple of things about that first the scope rings occlude the iron sights which are a rear ghost ring and a fairly tall front fiber optic blade.

There is a channel down the center of the rail that allows you to use the iron sights supposedly. Yeah you can line up the base of the front sight in the ghost ring I don't think that will work. I got some higher rings with cutouts in the base but also no go. Those are too high. It's like I need rings that clamp on the rail but have longer legs if you will.

Took good friends to the range, weather was perfect, and a good flexible RO I am familiar with was running the range I wanted, which was available (during the week it's often rented out to military/police). 50 yds. Hung some steel plates at the mountain (the "berm" is the cut side of a hill), put up various paper targets, and some shoot-n-sees, at different ranges.

Couple is planning to spend a few years doing the round-the-US trailer lifestyle starting in a year or two, and one item is for them to "gun up" for this. They're semi-new to gunz.

Model 60 revolver (357/3, CZ-83 (380ACP), XD9 (9mm), M&P 22 pistol (22LR) for handguns, M1 carbine, and a Mossberg 500 pump (which is the early favorite for their travel gun).

Every revolver I own is 357 Mag, out of which only moderate loads are fired (I use 357 brass for the snubs, just to move the carbon ring a bit forward in the cylinders). As noted by others, 357 Mag revolvers make great platforms for 38 special, due to weight.

I've fired a few "let's see what it's like" 357 Mag rounds out of each revolver. Not so bad in the Model 66 or Colt King Cobra snub, but "no thanks" in the Magnum Carry or Model 60.

Anything wirth shooting, I reckon a .357 would be damn appropriate. I wouldn't look forward to it, but it should most certainly do the job.

138 And also went to the handgun match yesterday. First time in a year or more that I fired the Model 66. Match is revolver-friendly. Did OK. Match was not as good as the one a few weeks ago, but better than those last year that had led me to skip many of them (too low a round count, not interesting enough, not much movement).

Next is a mixed shotgun/centerfire rifle match, will probably take one of the M1s, but been a while since I used a Mosin in that match, that used to be amusing.

And, again, the question becomes "Why?" And the only real reason for banning most of the sorts of knives (and things like 'chuks or knuckles) is they are used by scary people who like to commit illegal violence. So ban them and no more scary people committing illegal violence, right?

People really can be mighty stupid.

146 I heard that unlike the Army, where soldiers are issued a rifle from their assigned unit armsroom and thus will have numerous different weapons in their career, the Marines are assigned a weapon that follows them to their different assignments. Don't know if that's true or not. It sounds good, though.

------------

Wasn't true when I was in the Corps. 85-91

-----------------
You're talking OLD Corps - pre-Great War through the Banana Wars and China Marines. A Marine was issued his '03 in Boot Camp and kept the same one throughout his hitch, or it wore out, or he was promotoed to Staff NCO.

147 Think I watched that Garand loading video years ago. If you look at the WWII training films, it's pretty clear. The bolt only starts forward when you release downward pressure on the clip/follower. Easy and natural to draw thumb up/out of the way in time. Probably every "Garand thumb" in history was the result of a bolt hung up on the follower, not really locked back, moving forward.

159 A cane of proper construction is a pretty dandy weapon, and doesn't alert people or look out of place with those over 29, or scare the womenfolk and horses the way a knife might. I was surprised that open carry of knives is legal in Iowa. I "assumed" they weren't.

For that matter, since no CCW permit for handguns will be necessary shortly, is it safe to conclude that open carry of a handgun is now lawful? Seems to me it must be, by definition, but .. I've no idea.

Open carry seems really misguided, but I like to know what the boundaries are in every event. It's currently lawful on state ground and forests and the like.

Some states have always allowed open carrry since the beginning. Until recently, Vermont had NO laws on handguns as far as I know.

I think Kentucky abolished the permit requirement, but back in the 1999 or so, they were one of the few states with an actual "concealed WEAPONS license."

As in any weapon: knife, sword, blackjack, brass knuckles. I really respected that. Michigan has a "concealed pistol license" but also has open carry. Weirdly, until only a few years ago, pepper spray was illegal, as were "spring-operated knives." You could only lawfully own a switchblade if you had a single hand. No kidding, it was in the law, which has since been repealed.

Michigan had open carry forever but regulated concealed carry in the 1920s because it was felt unfair that you could talk smack and have a hidden pistol if the guy you taunted tried to teach you a lesson.

Later on, it became a political patronage thing, because you had to get the county sheriff and prosecutor to agree to it, so all the politicians had them. There was also no law for revoking them, so corrupt pols with multiple convictions still permits.

When we walk the dogs I always carry a hiking staff. I have had that staff since 1965 when we did the Metro Park walking trails. I call it Thumpy McThump Stick and I have had to use it a time or two on loose dogs that decided they wanted to attack us.

One sharp crack on the body and the problem goes away. I do not understand why so many people here let their dogs roam free. We are literally the rabies capitol of Texas and we do not take chances when we walk our dogs.

Your grip could be too relaxed. For years I had a tendency to shoot a little to the left. It went away when I took a more assertive and balanced grip. I make the other three fingers on the shooting hand tighter, which means the handgun is more stable - less disturbed by the trigger finger.

You should consider one of those spring grip strengtheners, too. Has done wonders for my accuracy.

You might have some luck reaching out to places like Mishaco, Military Arms Channel or Forgotten Weapons.

They have resources not available to regular ham and eggers that can point you in the right direction.

Mishaco especially is a historian by trade and he is a wealth of knowledge and may know how to locate "bring back papers" and the like. Good dude.

Virginia is for now a shall issue state so if you have training (or waivered with dd214 or LEO) and submit the paperwork and they don't have a reason to deny you they shall issue the permit within 50 days I think it is. In Fairfax County it took exactly 50 days. Funny that. VA's ccw is accepted pretty much anywhere west or south. Going north HAH! No soup for you.

You're exactly right. As he mentioned in the video max pressure is around 54,800 psi. API incendiary rounds typically run at higher pressures and velocities. I don't know where that round was manufactured but that was probably the issue. Nonetheless the rifle is NOT engineered for that type of failure.

This is why I have an m82a1. If you get into the .50 game you go big or go home, maybe in a box.

I am a tinkerer by nature and have tried changing many things on both my grip and trigger pull. All to no avail.

I was going to ask about hand strength at the next MoMe, because it felt to me as if that was part of the problem. My hand strength has gone down significantly in the last few years. I also have an essential tremor that further robs some hand strength.

MD resident CCW is for example valid in VA and NC but not in SC, GA, or FL. UT gets you a lot more states with non resident but oddly enough not SC for whatever reason so you can't carry in Myrtle Beach.

Concur. I don't mention hand-strength all that much, because I kinda take it for granted. Working in the trades for a few years, commercial caulking gun(s) in hand, you kind of build up a grip. Basic 25" tube, 2 in. bore, and you'd draw back the operating rod while shoving the forward (uncapped) end of the gun into a 1.5 gal. bucket of freshly mixed caulk. Then clean off the end and screw in the threaded end ring and nozzle. That loaded gun would then be about 8lbs., and you'd go over the parapet of the high rise, with four to six such guns affixed to your Sky Genie. Bit of an unfair advantage, even now.

Conversely, you might check with Masturbatin' Pete.. I'd imagine he has that hand strength thing up into Iron Fist territory? /snrk

Grip strength is quite important, and anything you can do to improve it helps.

That being said, some people just don't have it, and for them the smaller, lighter firearms are the way to go. You don't have to clench it the whole time, just as you are getting ready to fire, tighten the lower three fingers and then you'll eliminate some of the movement caused by trigger pull.

268 Late to thread due to yardwork. Pt. 1
Regarding a .357, the light .357 magnum 110 gr, used to be called the Treasury load as it has less recoil but pretty good terminal effect. The 110 and 125 gr were hard on forcing cones of revolvers and particularly S&W had problems with it in their K Frame .357 line. Part of the adaption (since changed) was that the barrels on K Frames had a notch at the rear to allow the cylinder to close and the K Frame top straps were not that thick so sometimes barrels cracked at the forcing cone. They also went out of time faster but were lighter and easier to carry all day versus the N Frames or the Colt E/I Frames. The N Frames and Colt E/I Frames had much less problems with high speed light bullets in .357 as did the later Ruger Security Six series.

278 Pt. 2,
The GP 100 is built even stronger than the Security Six series and should not have a problem firing whatever load you choose. I have one of the first series of GP 100's which has had countless rounds through it and it has not shot loose, the flame cutting is minimal on the very thick top strap, and the overall insides and frame is built like a tank.

If you have an original Python or trooper, due to the collectibility and the difficulty in finding Colt Smiths, stick to a midrange 140 gr or 158 gr if you are feeding it a steady diet. The newer Smiths with the sleeved barrels including the new K frame and the new Colt Python should be good to go with whatever you choose to feed it. The downside to the 110 and 125 gr .357 are a lot of muzzle flash, a bark that is unique among handguns, and the effects on the firearms noted above. It is also not advisable for the snubbies as controllability requires a lot of practice. The upside is it is a documented excellent self defense round that does not penetrate too much, expands self defense type bullets well, and leaves a really nasty wound.

281 276 The L Frame is S&W's ripoff of the original Python as they will even fit the same holsters with better frame treatment. Otherwise, they are nice revolvers but not as strong as a GP 100 or the even rarer Redhawk in .357.

That being said, it is easier to find a smith to fix a S&W than of the old Colts. Frank Glenn in Phoenix and Cylinder and Slide in NE are probably two that are highly recommended for old Colt D/A.

No experience with it. But watching the video it seems less useful than itargetpro and strikeman that have been reviewed here. It doesn't record shots so you have to remember where you hit. That might work well for your last shot but the last 10?

Whig. The S&W "L" frame was developed specifically to mend that "K" frame weakness, you so adroitly described. The "L" frame is identical to the "K", from the rear-sight, downward through the grip-frame, and forward to the front-edge of the trigger guard. Topstrap is beefier, the frame around the barrel threads is beefier, the diameter of the barrel at the threads is slightly larger, the crane and yoke are stouter, and of course, that sweet, full-length underlugged barrel and straight barrel profile..wow, such superlative balance! Oh, and the cylinder diameter is just a wee bit larger than the "K" frame, but not so much as an "N" frame. Pro-tip. The S&W "L" frame and Ruger GP-100 share speedloader spacings and specs.

If S&W had put a final fit, finish and polish on the 586 to equal a 1960s Model 29, then the 586 would have out Python'd the Python, and half the Python's price.

295 For the guy with the GP 100, the light 110 grains are easy to shoot and have good terminal effect in self defense shootings.

In handguns, sorry to disagree Weasel, it is best to practice with similar ammunition that you have loaded at home for self defense. Some of the other old line .357 makers will have some 110 gr. T load equivalents in cheaper ammo, particularly Remington and maybe Fiocchi.
That being said, .38 +P costs a bit less, has a little less recoil, a lot less muzzle flash, and is pretty effective. Haven't checked on the most recent GP 100's as far as forcing cone angle but Ruger has traditionally used a forcing cone angle that is more conducive to metal jacketed bullets and thus Rugers have been traditionally more likely leave lead in your bore when firing, particularly the soft swaged bullet types.

Colt and S&W are better on their forcing cone angles for lead bullets and less susceptible to leading.

Concur. And tuning the Rugers is best done with an external "lockwork" jig, which lets the 'smithy fit all the parts in their proper alignment, just as they'd be when the trigger/lockwork module is installed into the frame. Or, just lay out for a Wiley Clapp GP-100, and get the $moothne$$ from day one?

Posted by: callsign claymore at May 02, 2021 08:16 PM (q3Fww)

320 301 Weasel,
My take is based on my experience and recommendations from law enforcement trainers like Mas Ayoob. The Newhall incident where the CHP took on some criminals caused a change in training methods because the cops were shooting .38 Special wad cutters in qualifications and then loading up on patrol with .357 magnums in 125 gr self defense loads. They did not do well in the ensuing gunfight at Newhall CA.

If worried about a forcing cone, the 140 gr. XTP from Hornady is a good compromise. The 158 gr in .357 were generally removed from police service because they over penetrated and recoiled a bit too much. Those are much better for hunting purposes in my opinion.

Not mentioning specific loads here, but I have found that Titegroup does a fairly good job at getting the velocity for .357 training round reloads without excessive bark and recoil. I rarely use H110 or other rifle powders because I don't hunt with a .357.

Posted by: whig at May 02, 2021 08:16 PM (pO7gM)

321 blaster, too bad. I got a Single Six because it was the first gun I fired, as a kid, with my older brother (in a location where that would not be advisable, today).

I used to take it to the range (indoor or outdoor) every time - it was my "warm up" gun. I'd shoot 5 or 6 cylinders and focus on breathing, trigger pull, etc. Will remember to bring it next time, revive that habit.

336 A Ruger LCR with full-boogie 357 Mag? Variety makes the world go round, but I find it amazing that that combo could be comfortable to shoot. At the old indoor range handgun rentals were free to members, so once I tried the 38 LCR. One cylinder was enough. Nasty.

I understand the have-it-for-when-needed/not-to-shoot-much concept, and the light weight is terrific for carry purposes. But yikes.

I was at a class a week ago Saturday with an instructor who is an accomplished IDPA shooter and has extensive experience as a security professional. He is a big proponent of SIRT. I am waiting on getting one now.

You can use a SIRT pistol with a software product called LASR (laserapp.com) that will detect, time, record, and evaluate your shots. I purchased that and have been using it with my carry pistol and a 9mm laser cartridge. I expect it to be very helpful. The pistol and the software total will be less than what 1,000 rounds of 9mm brings today. I think they will be very helpful to my improvement as a shooter.

365 Well, "gun" related - just different guns than we (tragically) get to shoot.

The 3 16-inch naval rifles on the Iowa-class battleship main battery turrets were timed to fire in series, not simultaneously (to avoid distortions caused by recoil affecting accuracy). They appear simultaneous because the timing differential was tiny.

Center, then left, then right gun, that order. Also, for reasons. Just heard that during the last activation of those ships they increased the delay before the third gun fired, forget why.

369 Weasel.. you know one thing in particular that makes THIS the best Gun Thread on the 'net?

I read a lot of different sites & commentaries today, as regards that SERBU KaBoom. One can have such opinions as they wish, but here, the manner in which such opinions are offered and yes, even argued, are CIVIL. Respectful. Intelligently stated vs. heatedly hurled. Even the "newbies" here are welcomed with patience, insight, guidance and support. Not with sneering disdain or other hierarchal insults which are the hallmark of so many lesser sites.

You've somehow managed to round up pretty much the best of the gunosphere, all right here in this one thread, every week.

In some guns, the lighter faster rounds stress the forcing cone and can flame cut the top strap. I am a proponent of using bullets in the 158gr range and a slow powder keeping velocities at or under about 1100 FPS (if I recall correctly, not looking at reloading notes). It's not going to hurt anything to occasionally use hotter loads. just my 2 cents.

373 Stumbled across an amusing UToob video (or series) for gun nutz like us. A store in Washington County PA that rents machine guns does a test fire every season - but they do it all at once, with a team, in one take. Just look for "test fire of machine guns - one take" and Washington County and you should find them. Interesting. Beats most days on most jobs, for the guy doing the shooting.

Interesting. So even though the total force exerted on the revolver is less, the speed at which it occurs is damaging...

376 rhomboid, I was surprised too. Noticeable recoil, sure, but the LCR isn't a S&W scandium wheel gun that flogs you with each trigger pull.

The .357 LCR is a great design. It's great in .38 SPL too.

378 Weasel,
I brought up the Newhall incident and .38 special wadcutters.
The reason for not using the heavier 158 gr is simply the point of aim is different enough form the point of impact to throw people off. The recoil and blast profile is different as well.

The 125 in self defense loads recoils more like a .40 S&W in a short sharp shockt manner. The recoil impulse from 158 gr. (have not shot enough 140's to compare) is a bit slower and you get less muzzle blast. The 110 gr which I used to use as self defense ammo was Corbon's PowrBall which was some of the most accurate .357 ammo that I ever fired. The bullet profile was also well suited to speedloaders and the reduced recoil and muzzle blast compared with 125 gr in short 3 inch barrels was better.

Part of the issue that led me to Powrballs was that GP 100's were not the best to shoot FBI 158 gr .38+p soft lead swc hollowpoints. They leaded the barrel after only a few rounds and I had to buy a lewis lead remover kit to delead it. The FBI load expands well, has little recoil in a 4 inch service model, and it is easy to make reloads up to that standard to shoot similar ammo to commercial loads.

I'm sympathetic to the concept of a 'no frills' .50 BMG rifle, but that being the case, the last thing I'd be doing is stress testing the hell out of it.

Even if it turns out that the sabots were leaving residue or something, I would still expect the design to be hardened so that when failure happens (it always happens) the results are more contained.

And it is telling that no one is losing their mind in discussing this here.

382 Seen that video of the guys 50 cal blowing up pop up on Youtube the other day but didn't watch it. Watched it now. Guy is lucky.
I wonder if the guy has taken a peak down the barrel and used a bore scope to check things out. Might not have necessarily been a hot round. I wonder if the sabot didn't fail since the rounds are so old and the penetrator might have dug into the barrel on the way out and caused excessive pressure and the subsequent boom.

Definitely be careful of people passing off military surplus rounds that are really re-loads. Ask them if they're reloads and check out the primers for the primer crimp having been removed and/or the primers not being sealed. Check for the crimp at the bullet too. Thats another tell. Seen stuff like that before at gunshows back in the day.

.50 SLAP was designed to give better armor penetration to the M2HB, John Browning was many things but a crimper on safety margins in receiver strength was never one of them.

Like I said the shooter was blessed to have the resiliency of youth.

Posted by: sven at May 02, 2021 08:51 PM (Lzpvj)

387 Thanks Weasel.
Robert Campbell, whose written work I have appreciated for years, suggests using the 140 gr in Hornady XTP or Winchester Silver Tips in .357, particularly for those firearms that might suffer forcing cone or excessive flame cutting for exactly the reasons that you propose.

In my case, my K Frame Smiths and old E frame Colts get .38 Special plus p, the GP and Security series get .357, think I have 125 gr Ultimate Defense by Remington in those now since Corbon has basically disappeared on shelves even before the great ammo shortage.

Sometimes guns fire different ammo consistently, sometimes they don't. Its important to shoot the various loads side by side and note the difference.

For my (late, lamented) King Cobra, the .38 was less accurate in general, while the .357 was dead on. So it was actually a pretty good setup - work hard to coax performance out of the .38 and then switch to precision rounds that do what you want. The recoil was sharper to be sure, but that's actually part of the thrill.

That makes perfect sense, but like many people I am not tuned into the idea that modern pistols and revolvers (and riffles!) are not infinitely strong. It's pretty amazing that they can be damaged by the combustion of the powder.

One of the (many) advantages of shooting vintage firearms is that all the vulnerabilities are well known. Another is that because ammo was far less consistent in quality the designs tended to be rather robust.

396 382 The sturm and drang is different enough that it can throw you off. I dislike carry of 158 gr as they generally penetrate quite a bit more and do recoil more unless handloaded (see the Lucky Gunner test series of self defense ammo).

Since I reload, I prefer to use practice ammo that resembles my carry loads and in .357 Magnum, it is pretty easy to do. Same in .38 SPC or 9mm. The 125 grs should have about 1400 or so fps in velocity and the 110 grs. about the same if shooting HAP profile bullets or something similar. The 9mms seem standardized on about 1100-1150 for plus p and .38 Special plus p is about 1000 fps in service length barrels.

In rifles, it is much harder to do as ammo manufacturers have ways to exceed performance without raising pressures through some tricks that reloaders use with peril.

413 We're now in over-time, but whig without using a chrony I attempt (and, I think, succeed) in working up "duplicate" self-defense practice ammo that seems to match the recoil of the real stuff. Which satisfies my practice needs. I just load up a ladder of reloads/various charges, based on published data of velocities for the factory stuff and the reload recipes.

That has me start close enough, and then I just adjust til I have trouble distinguishing the recoil of the two, when intermingled in a magazine or a cylinder (the old close your eyes and spin the cylinder trick works here).
