The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"We'll take those miles. Are they transferable?"Spacecraft commander Col. Mike Hopkins

Quote II

“The way we fight the next major war is going to look very different from the way we fought the last ones,”United States Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin

You mean we kill people, break things and let the chips fall where they may? No more nation building?

Quote III

It’s time that the bureaucrats who control our lives stop being nameless and faceless. And it’s time that the Republicans who think Frank Luntz speaks for the rest of us should stop being nameless too.Andrea Widburg

Quote IV

“St. Louis City has a ‘right now problem’ relative to violent crime, so any measure that does not include adequate police staffing is misguided,” The Ethical Society of Police

Quote V

"The notion that somehow the state government gets the right to cram its version of virtue down the throats of every citizen in this state is and ought to be offensive to every Connecticut resident," Norm Pattis, Esq.

Granted I'm not an Ivy League Prof or some professional in the health business, but I do have some thoughts on this. Oh Hell No! ADDICTION RESEARCHER SAYS IT’S OKAY TO DO A LITTLE HEROIN, AS A TREAT - PSYCHOLOGIST CARL HART USES HEROIN RECREATIONALLY — AND BELIEVES YOU CAN TOO.

A tenured Ivy League professor and addiction researcher says he believes that using drugs like heroin and crack can be no more harmful than drinking alcohol.

Carl Hart, a psychologist at Columbia and author of the book High Price, argues that destigmatizing and decriminalizing “hard” drugs is key to harm reduction, according to The New Yorker.

He argues that using drugs like heroin recreationally can be completely safe. In fact, he believes it can be a part of a healthy lifestyle.

“As we now know from experience with alcohol, drinking itself isn’t a problem for most people who do it,” Hart wrote in his book. “The same is true of illegal drugs, even those we have learned to fear, like heroin and crack cocaine.”

Journalism can still be a dangerous occupation if you aren't swilling in democratic propaganda.

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Two Spanish journalists and the Irish director of a wildlife foundation were killed Monday in an ambush in eastern Burkina Faso, the Spanish government and officials in the African country said Tuesday.

The two journalists were working with the wildlife campaigner on a documentary about poachers in a national park bordering Benin when they were attacked by gunmen, Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya said Tuesday in a press conference in Madrid.

The Spanish journalists were David Beriáin, 44, and Roberto Fraile, 47, both from northern Spain, said members of the Reporters Without Borders organization representing the two reporters’ families.

The old saying is 'When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do' . I'm not to sure what the saying in Sicily is.

A US man has been detained after arriving in Sicily on a private jet from Florida in possession of weapons and drugs, Italian media report.

Patrick Joseph Horan, 64, told police he was visiting relatives on the Italian island when he landed on Friday, according to news agency Ansa.

But a check carried out on the aircraft was said to have uncovered guns, bows and arrows and 1kg (35oz) of marijuana.

The items were reportedly seized and Mr Horan was taken away for questioning.

The private jet was searched by police and customs officers shortly after arriving at Sicily's Trapani Birgi airport.

They said weapons - including two pistols, a rifle and ammunition - had been placed in boxes while the drugs were sealed in plastic bags and water bottles, Italy's La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Our GOP betters. 'They' just don't get it.

Attention Surrounding Mitt Romney Makes for a Rowdy Saturday at Utah GOP Convention

The Utah GOP convention was thrust into the spotlight on Saturday where Mitt Romney, now a sitting senator representing the state, took to the stage earlier today to make remarks. Boy was he met with boos, and heckling for it. A vote also later took place whether or not to censure Sen. Romney for his vote to convict former President Donald Trump during both of his impeachment trials. While it failed, at least the boos during his speech were still fun to watch.

(Later in the story, this gem)

As for the "upset leadership election," Carson Jorgensen, a sheep rancher by profession, was elected as chairman. The Utah GOP spelled his name wrong, but congratulations to him all the same.

Nothing says "Unity" like canceling Independence Day festivities. Biden's Pentagon Denies Veterans Biker Group a Parking Permit for Memorial Day Event - First Time in 32 Years

ABC-7 News in Washington reports the Biden administration has found yet another use for the COVID pandemic.

In South Dakota, Biden’s unity-branded administration is using the pandemic to cancel 4th of July fireworks at Mt. Rushmore. The fact that the pandemic was worse last year, Mt. Rushmore fireworks went forward, and there wasn’t a single case of COVID linked to that event is immaterial.

In the nation’s constitutional capital, which Biden wants to turn into its own state on a par with Texas despite the fact it has fewer people than Austin, Biden’s woke Pentagon has denied AMVETS a parking permit for their Memorial Day ride through the city they put their lives on the line to defend.

I guess this has something to do with Quote II and the Super-Duper Military Leadership we now have in place. Lovely, just fucking lovely.

The world continues to spin out of control. The Institution of Marriage is now under attack by the next swarm of retards. Opinionated? Ha. From Best Friends to Platonic Spouses - Some people are taking their friendships to the next level by saying “I do” to marriages without sex.

First came blood brothers, best friends who would solidify their bond by cutting themselves and swapping a bit of blood. Then came the tiny house besties, friends moving into adjoining tiny homes. (“Bestie Row” in Texas, for example.)

Today some people are taking their friendships a giant step further: They are platonically marrying each other, vowing to never leave each other’s side for better or for worse.

On Nov. 14, 2020 at Greenwood Hall in East Islip, N.Y., Jay Guercio and Krystle Purificato donned wedding gowns, walked down the aisle, exchanged rings and shared their first and only kiss. Ms. Purificato is in the process of changing her last name to Guercio.

“I want her to continue to be my best friend and my life partner,” said Ms. Guercio, a 23-year-old student studying professional communications at Farmingdale State College.

The besties, both queer and open to dating anyone but each other, met in 2011, and decided to get married in September. They sleep in the same bed but their relationship remains platonic.

Any menthol ban will take years to implement and will likely face legal challenges from tobacco companies.

Thursday's announcement is the result of a lawsuit filed by anti-smoking and medical groups last summer to force the FDA to finally make a decision on menthol, alleging that regulators had "unreasonably delayed" responding to a 2013 petition seeking to ban the flavor.

201 I went to my favorite mom and pop burger joint in Oroville and it was busy inside. Nobody wears a mask. Liberation

In finally found my first store that refused to allow me in because the mask is far more important than sales!

Not exactly an impulse purchase but my running shoes should be retired, so stopped off at an area store that specializes in fitting proper high-end running shoes to dedicated athletes - you know, those with really good metabolic health.

Zero customers, three employees. Step in, "You need to wear a mask". "I don't have one", "There are some on the table there." "That's OK, don't need one". "We won't let you in here without one". "Fine, I was going to drop a couple hundred on two sets of shoes to spend my money in the local community... but Bezos will take my money. "Good bye".

Their game of Simon Says - Humiliation Version was more important than sales.

I found an on-line retailer who had the same item on sale and didn't attach sales-tax - $80 savings, shows up in a couple days.

256 Richard Thomas, the guy who played John Boy, is apparently not gay.

I just saw a very strange movie a few nights ago on broadcast television, “Battle Beyond the Stars”, which featured Richard Thomas. Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, George Peppard, John Saxon. Watched it mainly for the cast. It was quite enjoyable as a bad movie, and not always as predictable as might be expected.

Roger Corman film. I bought the blu ray as it is a film I watched *mumble mumble* years ago. I still like it, just not quite as much as when I was *mumble mumble* years old. Many people who have seen his Fantastic Four film which was made to keep rights and never to be released have said it is better (though not FX wise) than the ones Fox made. Corman knows how to maximize a small budget, which is kind of what Blumhouse is now trying to copy with horror at his studio.

300 > Corman knows how to maximize a small budget

At one point he was writing movies from scratch to make use of the sets from other movies.

Say one of the major studios would be making a movie set in ancient Rome.

Corman would crank out the scripts for four or five ancient Rome and shoot them on the already-built set, on nights, weekends...holidays. Sometimes he'd have formal permission, sometimes he'd just bribe the guards to let him in.

A real swashbuckler, he was.

And he'd hire anyone willing to work cheap, even people without any previous credits. A surprising number of Big Name directors and actors got their break working on Corman movies.

Turned the key, and it cranked a second or two, and then just chattered. Twisted the terminals around on the battery posts to seat them better, reached in from the passenger door, turned the key, and it fired right up. Yes. I checked to make sure it was in neutral! I stayed running, so I strolled around to the driver's side, got in, backed it out, and did an orbit of the yard.

339 People who are able to use whatever drugs they want (including refined sugar, alcohol, and nicotine) if they are able to without becoming a problem should be allowed to. Those who can't handle themselves should be denied their vices (and suffer appropriate civil and criminal penalties). Millions of people abuse alcohol (myriad problems, including vehicular manslaughter), nicotine (cancer, emphysema, COPD - killed BOC founder Allen Lanier), and refined sugar (diabetes, metabolic syndrome, etc.), yet I doubt anyone here wants to be denied access to *their* drug(s) because too many other people can't handle them. If someone can earn a Phd in neuroscience and hold down a professorship, why should he be denied his vice when we allow unemployed, destructive alcoholics theirs?

We once had that standard for alcohol - it could not be made harmless for everyone so it was verboten to all. Repeal was one of FDR's biggest campaign promises. Perhaps we can trace the leftwing takeover of this country to December 5, 1933 when we re-legalized this drug. Should we re-prohibit what is essentially a poisonous solvent? The savings in money and lives not ruined would certainly be worth it.

342 Do any of you know that throughout most of the 19th century, these drugs were not illegal? He's also NOT saying that heroin is peachy-keen for everyone, anymore than alcohol is peachy-keen for everyone. The problem is that people who can't handle it are using it. The main problem with opiate addiction is being able to get a regular, clean supply. The use of opiates, per se, is actually less harmful to the body than is alcohol. A guy like Hart isn't going to manifest all the problems that have made opiate use a public scourge. He undoubtedly has a reliable source -- and may even make his own -- and his life is manageable in a way that his vice doesn't control him.

Posted by: SFGoth at May 03, 2021 12:01 AM (KAi1n)

343 Thanks for the ONT.

It may be true that you could use heroin for pain relief (that is essentially what you are doing when taking pain killers for some sort of condition.) Hell, the Dilaudid and Fentanyl they gave me for a kidney stone once was essentially synthetic heroin and whatever an analogue for fentanyl would be.

On the other hand, while that stuff was great and it certainly zeroed out the pain (Pain? What pain?) It is not something I would want to have too much control over. Personally, I would be worried about using them too much. On the other hand, when I have had a supply of narcotics for the stones, I have treated them more preciously than diamonds.

I dunno. It has never been an easy argument. Personal freedom and responsibility vs a potential abuse and harm.

345 Occasional drugs are a natural thing for humans.
They are a respite for the pressures of the days, whether it's gathering up enough grub worms for supper or making sure one doesn't run cross ways with the taxman.

On a metabolic level. We have receptors for those drugs. Why are they there if not to be exercised?

I'm not pissed about that. Why should I be? I can easily get it delivered to me should I so desire. However, the hypocrisy from those who don't want their lives governed by standards that shouldn't be applied to them is astounding. In any event, that our federal government considers marijuana to be a drug so pernicious it should be illegal is an obvious clue that our federal government is fvcked up. Funny how we had much, much less federal control over every aspect of our lives before the F.G. began to regulate what we could put in them -- with, frankly, no biological or pharmacological sense. Sorry to rankle your prudish sensibilities, Eleanor.

350 Never have seen a relative risk assessment of the various drugs, do not know if it could be done. Etoh is fairly well understood; some people, ethnic groups and families have a predeliction for addiction, but rarely is there a first time catastrophic result. Opiates, marijuana and other drugs of choice are somewhat different in the unpredictable effects of administration, whether it be unexpected death, addiction, induced schizophrenia, etc. No resolution to the controversy of whether one is "safer" than others, but I prefer alcohol and have not tried others.

My 2 times doing powder cocaine were exactly the same: my nose and throat went numb; my sinuses emptied down my throat; I got cold; I got wired; I felt like I constantly had to pee; and I kept asking when the fun would kick in. Honestly, I enjoyed snorting No-Doz more (freshman year nerd thing). I know it was at least decent stuff since the first time was from a dealer I knew offering me a first-timer and the second was with a relative who enjoyed it. Neurologically I have no idea why there wasn't an iota of pleasure from it.

"Whitesnake". Poseur.

The 80's was really a marketplace of musical styles (and drug choices). There was alternative and the associated genres ("college radio", goth, post-punk, etc.), metal (hair metal, hard rock, heavy metal and its genres (particularly speed and thrash metal), run-of-the-mill MTV pop and pap, psychedelic made a comeback -- whatever you wanted you could get. Drugwise, there was a lot of coke, but also acid made a revival, opiates, shrooms, speed, weed, whatever you wanted. If you could handle yourself, the 80's were a fine time, especially since answering machines made communication easier. LOL

Posted by: SFGoth at May 03, 2021 12:43 AM (KAi1n)

385 Whitesnake? Was that the one that was the Led Zep knockoff? Or was that the one that admitted they stole Sex Pistols riffs cause no one in America really knew them in the 80s? Exactly. If vocal sound could be copyrighted, Plant could have shut him down. Read a funny line the other day about the vocal tone often used in hardcore metal..called it the Cookie Monster voice. Plant had a huge, huge influence on hard rock in the 70s..the most macho of music usually had a very high pitched male singer for years. His stage style was quite femmy, too, which is odd when you think about it as there was never any question about what Robert liked.

It was much more FREE than today. Lots of Genres. Lots of Styles. Everything from late Disco, to Southern Rock, to Punk, to CW....

And there were some cross genre hits.... not like now, when everything is categorized and homogenized with auto tune.

Allow me a rant about Duracell batteries. Last year, I bought a fairly expensive flashlight from Lowe's for Miley. Nice LED job, pretty bright, and heavy. Batteries ran down about a month ago, and I replaced them with some Duracell AAs from big pack I picked up.

This thing looks like a D diameter cylinder, but has this cartridge pack inside that takes 6 AAs. Now, put them again, nice and bright again. The we noticed something funny. When you turn it off, the LED glows dimly.

I take it apart. One or two of those brand new Duracells had leaked. Semi-liquid electrolyte shit all over the cartridge, which had shorted out some of the internal connections.

When I first got that big pack of Duracells, I noticed something looked slightly different, but didn't pay it much attention. Now, I got to looking closely.

The ends look much cheaper. They were real Duracells, near as I can tell. Now, I'm wondering. Has Duracell gone cheap Chicom shit, now? Have they contracted out with some el-cheapo place to make batteries, onto which they stamp their name?

396 Romeo13 - I think we're saying the same thing. By "marketplace", I didn't mean an extant record store. You couldn't pigeonhole the 80's with one or two genres. I think a lot of that goes to the cultural diversity of Gen X.

399 Ironically, one genre where you find a lot of baritone and higher bass is goth. Maybe it's because Bela Lugosi's dead, dunno. However, I've read (and it does make sense) that in rock/metal, with the way the guitars are recorded, a lower vocal can't push through as well. Buck Dharma specifically says this is why he sings "Don't Fear the Reaper" live in B whereas he recorded it in A.

I'm looking at these batteries. I've seen reports of counterfeit Duracells being sold in stores. These don't have a lot number on them where they should be, and there are some other identifying distinctions.

These batteries have lot numbers on them, but have two different "assembled in" places on them. USA and EU, each on one side. I found some AAA Duracells here, which say made in China, but have the same on both sides.

I am taking these batteries out of everything I put them in. I'm not gonna risk ruining something else.
